Chairman’s Annual Report 2017 Another year has gone and boy, we have had a busy time. We've had a lot of very successful rallies and events over the past twelve months. Every one of them that I went on was great and I can't put any one ahead of another, although two events that do come to mind are the Festival Rally and the Swap Meet. Both of these events were run in a professional manner and were unparalleled successes. We have to thank those members who carry out the ongoing maintenance around the clubrooms and grounds and all of those who organised or helped in any way with Branch activities. It gave me great pleasure during this year to present hard working member Gerry Kennedy with a certificate of appreciation of his work for the Branch over the many years of his membership. A pleasing aspect of our Branch is the number of veteran and vintage cars that came out for the Frank Robson Memorial Rally this year. We have to remember that these are the foundation vehicles of our Branch and Club, and we don't want them to just sit in storage. It's also pleasing to continue to see quite large numbers of members and their vehicles participating in all of the other events available throughout the year. We have lost several of our members over the past year and we extend our sympathies to their families. We have also gained some new members and I would like to welcome all of you to our Club. I genuinely feel that our Branch is in a sound condition and that with your help we will continue to grow and perform well in the coming year. Murray Proctor 4
Club Captain’s Report June 2017 Winter has arrived with one run left for the year. Thanks to Bill Sheddan for organising the Night Trial which was won by Des Brewster. A very interesting run enjoyed by all. End of Season Run will be run by Greg Elder. AGM coming up so please help fill positions in club as it is your club. Get nomination forms filled in. G’day – a Sad Reality This morning I was sitting on a bench next to a homeless man, I asked him how he ended up this way. He said: Up until last week, I still had it all!! A cook cooked my meals, my room was cleaned, my clothes were washed, pressed, I had a roof over my head, I had TV, internet, I went to the gym, the pool, the library, I could still go to school. I asked him, "What happened? Drugs? Alcohol? Divorce...? Oh No, nothing like that he said. No, no ... I got out of prison. Evan Henderson 21

April Tuesday Wednesday Ramble Yes, we held April’s Tuesday Ramble on Wednesday due to the Tuesday being Anzac Day. We departed the clubrooms and picked up Tuesday Ramblers on our way, the rest meeting us in Winton, 32 in all. There we were booked into the Central Southland Lodge, better known as the Middle Pub, for lunch. They promised us roast beef and all the trimmings, plus dessert, for $20. Boy! Did I see a few eyes popping when they served our lunch! Man, what a fantastic meal, and, yes, we will be going back. After we waddled out, we made a visit to Olly Olsson, just a couple of blocks away, to view his collection of goodies. The first garage housed a 1930 Chrysler 77 Roadster, beautifully restored and has been on many rallies. Unfortunately this vehicle is undergoing a bit of heart surgery. I believe a cracked head and possibly a cracked block.

The large shed at the back of the section housed a 1979 Morris Marina van in lovely condition, parked alongside a 1929 Pontiac Sedan rallied over many years. Waiting for restoration beside the Ponty was a 1938 British Bedford pick-up which has lived most of its life in the Winton area. Beside these were four motor scooters: a Crescent Saxoped, two Suzukis and a Yamaha. I think the Yamaha was from Thailand (?) and was used by a Postie.

But wait! The walls of this garage were covered in more goodies. At the east end was a collection of Holden hub caps and Holden memorabilia. On the south wall was one of the best collections of number plates you’re likely to see. Also on shelving were all sorts of bits and pieces Olly has collected over the years. On the west wall was a collection of old screw-on type hub caps, many that I think most people have not heard of. I should have taken notes as I am sure I have missed a lot!

The Annual Night Trial Hours of photography, editing, printing, scheming and just plain hard work and perseverance made for a very interesting and challenging night trial for 2017. Bill, you did an amazing job and kept us all guessing. Unfortunately there were only ten cars taking part, but I guess that that was better than nine! These events are organised with the expectation that more of the members will take the opportunity to participate. However, Dad and I, along with Starr McDougall did join in and had a most entertaining evening. At the club rooms we were given 62 small coloured photographs of business logos and we had to try and identify each one. For each one we got correct we received two points. We were then given the opportunity to drive around town and try and identify the ones we had missed, but wait! There's more, we had to measure our mileage. So here we were driving around Gore with me hanging out the window shining a torch at several buildings. It's a wonder we weren't arrested. Sometimes I had to get out of the car and shine the torch up closer to see what the signs read. I wonder how many times I was seen on a surveillance camera? Dad, Starr and I thought we had done a pretty good job of it, back at the club rooms we were given another one point for each extra logo we had found. This however was not quite good enough, as Des and Janet Brewster scored 106 points!! to win! Congratulations to you both. Cyril, David and Helen McFadzien took second place with 95 points which proved to me that you didn't need to be a townie to know your Gore business logos. But wait, there's more, we won a chocolate bar for our mileage of nine miles, as did Bill and Annette Ainge. All credit to Bill, it was a great Night Trial and if you were not there you missed an experience of stealth and detective work.

We all enjoyed supper and a drink and Bill had another quiz for us. Very, very difficult it was too. For example, do you know where on the human body you would find your Pollex? Or what is a uruwhenua aotearoa? And guess who won the quiz, Des and Janet! It was their night! Fay Graves 27

New Members This month it gives me great pleasure to welcome one new member and one re-joining member: Alexander Geary of Wyndham owns a 1929 Essex and we look forward to seeing him at our meetings and with his car on runs and rallies. Fay Graves, who will be well known to many of you and is a frequent participant in branch events, has rejoined. I would like to extend a particularly warm welcome to her, especially as we have a contribution from her in this issue of The Wiper!

What’s In Your Shed? 2017 Fiat Abarth 124 Spider by David North Yes, I know it’s not a “Vintage” car, but there is (some) “Vintage” content, honest! Some of you (is that you, Noel?!) may remember the original Fiat 124 Sport Spider (1966-1980) and the Abarth Rally derivative (introduced in 1972). The new Fiat 124 Spider harks back to its predecessor in the shape of the headlights, the bonnet profile and the rear lights. The publicity photos of it showed it with matt black bonnet and boot lid, evoking memories of the rallying version’s colour scheme. I first saw pictures of it early last year and really liked the look of it.

As the year wore on, dribs and drabs of information came out about New Zealand availability and the fact that only the Abarth version would be imported. Initial reports suggested that the first examples would arrive in NZ before the end of 2016. Unfortunately, this turned out to be very optimistic as demand elsewhere in the world was very high. Pricing was confirmed, and orders started being taken in October 2016 and I had intended to wait until I could see, and test drive, one before deciding whether or not to place an order. I had test-driven the MX-5 twice and not been entirely convinced by it, hence my hesitation about ordering the Abarth. (The Fiat shares a platform with the new Mazda MX-5, although it has a different engine, and changes to the suspension and braking systems, plus a host of detail differences.) The “local” dealer (Armstrong Prestige in Dunedin) told me that demand from dealers in NZ was very high, and not many cars would be imported at first, so I decided to place an order immediately and hope for the best. 30
Time passed, and so did various estimates for the car’s arrival. I did manage to see, and sit in, an Australian-specification example at the Ellerslie Intermarque Concours and Classic Car Show in Auckland in February and was very impressed, which was reassuring! But still no sign of any deliveries, or demonstrators, in New Zealand, and I was on my way to the UK for a couple of weeks……. Back from my trip at the end of February and still no news, then, in early March, I got an email saying “my” car was on its way from Auckland! A big surprise, this would be the first example the dealer would see. A disappointment also, as the car was all white, with no black panels, no red highlights and no red seat facings, all of which I was expecting from the publicity I had seen and the brochure I had been sent. Anyway, we took a trip to Dunedin to look at it and test-drive it – and fell in love with it. We decided we liked the “understated” look and, after a good deal of haggling, we traded our BMW Z4 for it and drove the car home on the 16th of March. After an enjoyable 250km/three hour drive the new car looked very much at home parked next to the Toyota Corolla!
We’ve now had the car for two months, and have done nearly 4,000kms. It’s a delight to drive, it feels very sporty, light and agile, goes very well and makes a lovely noise. It’s also more comfortable than either the Peugeot or the Z4 and is much more fun to drive than the Z4 was.

The top goes up and down very easily, even from the driver’s seat, there is just one catch to release or fasten. The heater is very good, it has heated seats and it is not very draughty with the top down. There are a few niggles, mostly to do with the “infotainment” system. Controls that I’m used to pressing buttons for are hidden in menus accessed via the touch screen or scroll wheel (argh!), there’s no CD player (just USB and AUX ports) and the radio doesn’t turn off, just muted or turned down! We like “unusual” cars, and this certainly fits the bill. When we bought it, it was the only one on the South Island and, as far as we know at the moment, it is still the only one on the road. (Although Armstrongs have another one in the showroom for sale.) It attracts a lot of attention and favourable comments about its looks – and causes a bit of puzzlement too. The only badges on it are “Abarth” ones, apart from “124 Spider” on the rear panel, so most people have no idea what it is! Out of curiosity, I compared the Abarth (a modern “compact and light” 2-seater) with the Toyota (a 5-door, 5-seat family saloon with a large boot). The two are almost exactly the same size, the Abarth being only 80mm (3 inches) shorter and 105mm (4 inches) wider but with only two seats and a third of the boot space. Its kerb weight is 160kg (353lbs) more than the Toyota but where it does win is engine power and torque. The Abarth gets a maximum of 125 kW (167 bhp) and 250Nm of torque from its 1368cc turbocharged engine, while the 1587cc in the Toyota manages only 58 kW (78 bhp) and 123Nm. The Abarth’s engine gives 91.4kW/L compared with 36.5kW/litre for the Toyota, giving a power to weight ratio of 118 kW/tonne for the Abarth and 42 kW/tonne for the Toyota. Despite the vastly improved power and performance, we’re getting the same overall fuel consumption from the Abarth as the Toyota, around (6.1L/100km or 40mpg). Such is 30 years’ worth of progress! These have been through the process as stipulated in the By Laws of the Club Constitution under “Alteration to the Constitution”.
