Greetings every one, I sincerely hope that you have all had a great Christmas and take this opportunity to wish you all a very Happy New Year. The club is on a real roll with all the outings and displays that we are being invited to and it is a great way for us to be seen and recognised. I personally appreciate the chance to show off my car and mingle with the public, especially the chance to visit old people’s homes and give them a ride. Chatting with them, I find it not only rewarding but it gives me a real lift to help these people fill in a little bit of time and see them so thrilled at delving back into the past. There is always the added bonus of receiving a fabulous morning or afternoon tea! The club has been busy over the last couple of months and we have achieved much with the Christmas Parades and the AP&I Show, the Burma and Monte Carlo Rallies. I would like to thank all those who participated and helped in presenting their cars for the parades and displays it has been a wonderful opportunity to show our vehicles. It is also tremendous for us to be able to display what our club is and talk about the cars and the club etc to the public. It was a great achievement for the club to be presented with the third prize Sash for the best displays at the AP&I Show. I feel that we must accept whatever invitations we can and pull together so that we have the numbers attending to make these events successful. If we do not make a successful appearance when requested we may not be asked back again and would then be leaving an opening for another club to step in. So let’s keep up the great work and display our club to the utmost whenever the opportunity arises. Our biggest event of the year is on the 16th of March which is the Annual Swap Meet. It’s our main fund raiser so please get your name on Pete Collins or Linda Barton’s job sheet and help out in making this event a success. The next club meeting is on the 6th of March. See you all there.

The January and February editions will have it published. Subsequently it has been prepared into a small windscreen flyer for us to also advertise our event. Many have been distributed at the Whanganui Vintage Weekend. If you attend a gathering of vehicles please obtain a bundle of these and distribute them. Mike Khull reports: Bryan Wells and I put out about 200 flyers on the Saturday Car Show at Whanganui. Callum, Bob and I put out about 350 to 400 at the Dannevirke Car Show on Sunday 27 January. All the comments received were all very positive about our Swap Meet, with most I spoke to saying they will be there and thanks for the reminder. So the flyers are working as planned. Mike

A father and son team called in over Christmas looking for parts for their project. They had bought a 1916 Hupmobile engine from the Marlborough branch. Helpers are also required for the kitchen: contact Linda Barton. Horowhenua branch won the inaugural Monte Carlo held between the branch and Wellington branch. 1930 Ford Model A Roadster Pickup
Just recently, in 1978 Jeff Fox was tearing around in an old truck. I decided I liked it and persuaded him to sell it to me. It had a home-made hard top and a very heavy wooden flat deck with no front board. The back of the cab was used to bounce things off! It was a bit rough in spots and a trip from Otaki to Levin required at least one stop to push the cab back across to un-jam the pedals! It was no longer attached to the chassis! I used it until the WoF ran out. Jeff must have bribed the mechanic with quite a few beers to get that sticker! About a year later, I decided to fix a few things but needed more repairable bits. I bought another pickup project from Peter Nightingale. This included a very large tandem trailer load of ‘A’ parts from Shannon. I finished the front axle, chassis and steering box back then, but became involved with Four Wheel Driving! I became self employed, got married then had three children! I built a house and the list goes on. Thirty odd years later it was time to sell the Pickup or fix it! So it was the old teach yourself panel beating and spray painting. Both Jeff and Brendon Fox have been very helpful finding parts all over the country, at swap meets and on Trademe. Jeff has an interesting spares shed and a very helpful intimate knowledge of ‘A’s. The cab alone has six different donor vehicle parts. The original cab rear panel, seat riser and seat springs, dash, screen frame and stanchions. The rest are from Shannon and from Peter's project. The dash rail from Auckland, the front guards from Manaia, running boards ex Masterton, the deck and tailgate from Nelson and the motor from ‘Matilda’, Peter’s car! The valences come from the Levin Swap Meet, hood bows Dunedin, radiator ex Coromandel and, you get the picture! The gearbox is built from five I collected. The seat upholstery is compliments of Les Adlam, then he retired and went fishing. So the top was made by Mark Dunn at Kerry's Upholstery, all done very nicely too. I bought the fabric, hide and fittings from MAC's in USA.
All the major engine work, new bearings, counterweighted and ground crank, reground cam, new valves, hard exhaust seats, re-bore etc were all done by Murray Horn at Engine Restorations Ltd. I lightened the flywheel by 24 pound. I've done all the rust repairs, panel beating, painting, mechanical work, wiring, woodwork, cleaning up and cups of tea myself! Hence the eight years it took to get it on the road. The colour is P3 purple, a BA Falcon colour, wrong year, wrong country, but still a Ford colour, so obviously correct! For the purists, a large part of the truck is original, but many parts were either missing or not repairable. Everything is 1930 ‘A’ but from many donor vehicles. My next project is a bit easier, a 1955 Series 1 Land Rover Fire Engine. It has only 10,980 miles on the clock. There’s enough rust and rot to make it not too easy! But that’s another story.

What a great turn out of Horowhenua cars! It started, three days out with a mere two vehicles participating! However you guys turned it on for the Shannon Community, well done! In total there were ten Horowhenua cars plus an extra from the Manawatu. John Callesen and his big V8 Cadillac Tourer was there, a mighty car. Thank you John, great to see you and the Caddy. All were resplendent in tinsel and decorations. The adults were big kids really! They loved to fancy up their pride and joy. Pauline and Cheryl were the biggest kids of the lot. The cars gathered in the street behind the petrol station, did a short run and into the Shannon Domain. All were parked up along with the Tararua Rodders who also had prettied up their cars. They were on display for the locals to view while members took advantage of the entertainment which included many bands, line dancers and other community groups. Hot dogs and ice creams were the order of the day and those wanting a bigger feed, treated themselves to a wonderful Hangi.
Even the club clowns were in attendance! They should’ve been wearing their clown suits and red noses all day. Much hilarity was caused by one very short fella who decided to change into his clown suit hiding behind the long door of a Rapier as cover! Trying to hide his little bits he dropped his pants then realised he’d lost his shorts! Eagle eyes Mr Chairman Des spotted the boo boo and had secretly taken possession. All panic set in when Shorty couldn’t find his duds, Des pops up from behind several cars away waving the shorts for all to see! Cutting a long story short, Shorty got his shorts back just in time to cover his short mistake! When all brave and safe, he declared revenge, this time sporting a glowing red nose. Shortly the Shannon Christmas Parade Committee announced over the loud speaker that a set of keys for a 1948 Morris had been handed in to lost property, and would the owner like to collect them! The moral of the story is, never cross a short man in shorts, who is the biggest clown in the parade!
Monte Carlo Rally 7 members from Horowhenua Branch took part in the Wellington Branch Monte Carlo Rally to Wanganui for the Heritage Weekend. They were Bruce and Raewynn Lawrie (1937 Chrysler P4), Don McLaren and Julie Riepen (1930 Ford Model A), Verdon Heath (1964 Saab 96) and Winton and Ruth Cleal (1956 Wolseley 6/90). 10 entries were from Wellington Branch. The Monte Carlo Rally is in two 4-hour sections, starting at a location of your choice from a supplied list, lunch is at Woodville, and it ends in Wanganui at 5pm at 151 on London Motel. Along the way you collect points at the various places on the map you visit. Bruce and Raewynn were the winners of the Monte Carlo and Don and Julie came third. But better still, Horowhenua Branch beat Wellington Branch on points allocated for their best 3 entries, and won the Rosebowl trophy which Bruce and Raewynn are holding in the photo. Congratulations! Well done Horowhenua members representing our branch, brilliant job!
Wanganui Heritage Weekend On Saturday we all drove downtown to park up our cars in Victoria Avenue, where several blocks were closed to traffic so people could wander around and look at the classic and vintage cars. A lot of people were dressed in vintage clothing and some were in steam punk attire. It was a lovely warm Wanganui day and people enjoyed the entertainment and stalls and most shops joined in the heritage theme. The Burma Rally We all participated in the Wanganui Branch Burma Rally on Sunday. There were a record 110 entries, which is more than a lot of Easter rallies we have attended. (There’s a challenge for Horowhenua Branch.) The Rally started at Moutoa Gardens with the first car leaving at 9.00 am. The competitive element was four timed sections (2 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon) and six silent checks. The rally route was from Okoia through to Turakina, Santoft and Feilding for a picnic lunch at Kowhai Park. In the afternoon it went to Rongotea, Ohakea, Bulls, Marton, Turakina and back to Moutoa Gardens. The Rally dinner was at the Bowling Club where they managed to squeeze in over 100 people, many of whom wore their best vintage finery. The Rally prizes were presented and Don McLaren was chosen as the best dressed man. Winton and Ruth got second in the PWV class and received a very useful prize package. We motored home on Monday morning and are already planning our next visit to Wanganui Heritage Weekend.

What started out as a vague idea and after prompting by my navigator, Julie, I sent an entry for both the Wellington Monte Carlo and the Whanganui Burma rallies.
Now the planning started with a request of Peter for the use of Matilda, sort out the accommodation, get our heads around something we knew nothing about and most importantly, sort out the finery with which to clothe the person. The entries were not confirmed until I took it upon myself to start ringing. As a newbie to this experience I didn’t want to be pushy, but one needs to know. Diane and Roger supplied the Monte Carlo targets to Winton so two days of planning and scheming could begin. Start where we want! Okay, Hokio Beach at 8am, a weave through Southern Manawatu to Linton and Aokautere. Over the Pahiatua track and after chasing a place which is on the map, but not for real, we checked in at Woodville for lunch 20 minutes early. The number of cars participating was a little unclear but it was great to be part of a fun experience. Lunch over, we took on the Saddle Road. We took what proved to be a well timed run through Cheltenham and Halcombe making the last checkpoint above Whanganui, at Upokongaro. We left just in time to make the 105 London Street finish line with minutes to spare. Winton and Ruth, Bruce and Raewynn, Verdon and his speedy Saab, with Julie and I made up the Horowhenua team. The team had two almost perfect runs, a high point scoring round trip by the black Wolseley to the Coonoor Formula One event and a very necessary pit stop almost on the final stage for Verdon, our Swedish Rally representative. Bunched together in the conference room participants made talk, barbecued and drank in fine fashion until the important part of the proceedings was reached. Who was more cunning than the others? Who had spied points that could be gained with subtle direction changes? Now we would find out. By the sheer weight of numbers Wellington must do well! The announcement of the winner of the rally; Bruce and Raewynn from Horowhenua, first place! The Kidds in their Essex, second, with Matilda, myself and Julie third. This was a handicap event so Horowhenua could be rightly proud. Now just to finish things off, Wellington entered into a top three results competition with Horowhenua. 6331.25 versus 6140 points. Just check the smiles to find out which of the outside, lowly rated, not a hope team won!
Following the great Monte Carlo effort, Saturday was a day of relaxation participating in the heritage celebrations in Whanganui. There were markets, music and blocks of cars on display. Period costume was prominent in the laidback city. The day wound up with an organised city tour. Lots of residents turned out to enjoy the fun. Sunday dawned as each day had, fine and warm. The start with over 100 entries was at Moutoa Gardens. A few hot heads appeared, but this time no claims, who wants to admit their car overheats. The speed sections had been mixed which gave an interesting start. The route was mainly south of the river with many old favourite places appearing from many different directions. High winds caused problems, definitely affecting the vehicles handling and motoring speeds. There appeared to be an excess of main highway travel but not being experienced in the planning, who am I to judge. A 180° crossing of State Highway 3 at Bulls doesn’t make much sense when there are alternatives. Once again the ellusive silent checks didn’t stand up and shout ‘See me’ so reports of two and three were very common. There were six! Enough said. With the end being again at Moutoa Gardens we now had the choice of beer at one of the local establishments or coffee at the club rooms. We chose the latter. Among friends and a great crowd we reminisced about the day's adventures. In the evening we met up at the Bowling Club. With the finery flashing and girls giggling, the occasion was celebrated with a fine meal followed by the prize giving. Winton and Ruth pulled off a section win after a difficult drive on the 20 to 30 mile an hour section. After dessert and a possible act of sabotage, (I never did find out who caused me to feed my lap with trifle and cream) surprise surprise, my name was called for the best dressed gentleman award. Well that really topped a great rally weekend for the members of our branch and me in particular. A clear sky welcomed us on Monday morning for the Whanganui President's farewell run to a historical homestead and morning tea before the drive home. An overcast sky bid us adieu. Thanks for a great weekend to the organisers and participants alike.

For the December issue of Spark, Jackie Job supplied excellent photographs of Horowhenua cars participating in the Levin Christmas Parade. She was able to identify almost all of the cars and drivers for the article. The exception was the Jeep. As the Editor I wanted the correct information shown to accompany the article. I’m aware there are several Jeeps in the branch but I wasn’t able to positively identify the one in Jackie’s photo. So I went to George McLean for advice.... Could he identify the vehicle from its markings? From this point his information was the catalyst for an article regarding the vehicle and its markings. Of course it was his Jeep.
“After restoring and painting the Jeep, my thoughts turned to what markings should be put on it? Most owners of Jeeps favoured the US Army or NZ Army markings. Seeing the Kapiti Coast area has more to do with the US Marines camped at Mackay's Crossing during WW2, I thought it more appropriate to stick with their markings instead. This proved to be quite a challenge. I was advised by the former Assistant Curator of the US Marine's Museum in Quantico Virginia, the Marines historical markings for anything used by them was one aspect the museum had never investigated! He did mention in passing, that in discussions with former WW2 veterans the Marines didn't like any markings on their Jeeps whatsoever when going into battle! He further added that if the insignia couldn't be painted out, then mud was smeared over the top to add to the overall camouflage effect. Not a good idea in tropical rain, but what other choice in the circumstances? I can see the logic behind that course of action because of the correct yellow insignia on the sides of the hood, not what I'd call a suitable choice of colour for those "First on the beach"! This left me to do the necessary research to get the markings correct in every detail. It entailed extensive research on the internet, checking photos, researching books and watching WW2 film footage to glean the information to achieve the correct insignia. Not an easy task to do due to the small size overall of the US Marines compared to the US Army. I encountered many restored Marine's Jeeps on the internet however decided not to use that information, as it could be in error, so ignored them. Apart from the rear of the Jeep, I'm now convinced the markings are now correct. The rear cannot be changed as the registration plate is in the way, so left that "as near as possible" instead. The vehicle bears the markings of the US Marine's Aviation Group 23 (MAG23). This is a unit formed at the suggestion of General MacArthur in 1942, providing ground-to-air liaison with Marine's aircraft to call in air strikes against Japanese positions during the Pacific Campaign.
After the swift advance of Japan though the Pacific following the attack on Pearl Harbour, New Zealand was thought to be the most secure area for a major supply location to the Pacific Campaign during WW2. New Jeeps were shipped to NZ from the US with a new Jeep on the back of a GMC truck. When required, Jeeps were shipped overseas to supply forces in the field. For the return voyage, "war weary" vehicles, those requiring extensive repairs due to wear and tear or battle damage, were shipped back with two Jeeps loaded on top of each other on the back of a GMC truck. Upon arrival in NZ the Jeeps were unloaded at Point Howard Wharf and taken to Ford Motor Co in Seaview. The trucks in turn went to General Motors. At the Ford factory the Jeeps were sent down a line to be totally disassembled. Salvaged components were sent out to local service centres for refurbishment. The Jeeps were then processed down an assembly line for rebuilding. They were checked and tested before being stored for reissue. It has been noted this effort by NZ has resulted in considerable savings in the supply of new Jeeps into the Pacific area. A letter from Colonel Harry Adamson, Officer in Charge of the Ordinance Department compliments New Zealand’s efforts and identifies the meticulous work carried out and considerable savings in distance for transport and the fact orders of new vehicles could be cancelled. This rendered those new vehicles available for other theatres of war. The question now arises... how many parts on my Jeep went back and forth over time? The Jeep has one great advantage over all other vintage vehicles... you don't need to polish it!”

I have listened to George speak on the subject and find it very interesting to note that any one Jeep can not necessarily be considered ‘original’ in the true sense of the Vintage Car Club’s meaning. Any Jeep may have been refurbished several times resulting in any number of transferred parts from another vehicle. However this Jeep is as correct and as original as one could be. I don’t think any person can criticise the originality or authentication of a Jeep after having been through what these vehicles have endured. This is a lovely example.

The February Mid-Month Meander is on a Thursday and is an approx. 20 mile (35 km) run to the Herb Farm in Grove Road for lunch. Meet at the railway station end of the Matthews Ave cul-de-sac (Palm Nth) at 10.45 am. At the Herb Farm there is a selection of cabinet food including salads, bagels, croissants, sausage roll with salad etc., as well as a Brunch Menu which includes a couple of $11.00 plates (eggs on toast and mushrooms with toast). The full Brunch Menu contains other light meals to choose from and can be viewed on the Herb Farm Web Site. Vegetarian and gluten free options are available on many of the meals. Next to the Café there is a retail outlet with a good range of natural skincare, body care, hair, healing and other products. Don’t forget that if for any reason it is not convenient for you to use your club eligible vehicle on any of the branch events you are more than welcome to join in using your ‘modern’. th
SUNDAY RUN – 24 February 2019 Meet at 11.00 am at the Chesters Plumbing and Bathroom carpark in Tremaine Avenue (Palm Nth) for a drive to a local picnic spot. Bring your lunch, hot water, chairs and whatever else you might need to settle in for a relaxing picnic lunch. If the weather is against us on the day still come as a route to an alternative venue has been prepared which will allow us to go ahead with our picnic plans under shelter. RUAHINE RAMBLE – 2rd March 2019 Meet at the Coach House Museum, 121 South Street, Feilding at 8.45 am for a hot drink before the 9.15 am briefing. The Ruahine Ramble will this year again not cross the ranges and will follow the theme of recent years – that of an easy relaxing non-competitive outing. The morning route is an easy one of approx. 68 miles (110 Kms) through rolling countryside which will suit vehicles of all VCC Vehicle Classifications. The afternoon run back to Palmerston North is approx. 30 miles (46 Kms) and provides for stopping at a Café on the way back for those who may wish to do so. There are no unsealed roads on this Ramble and the route passes a couple of public conveniences. Petrol is available at the end of the morning section. Like last year, there is no straight line navigation. If for whatever reason you are unable to (or don’t wish to) bring your vintage on the Ramble then come along in your modern. Bring your own lunch, hot water etc., plus chairs, picnic rug or whatever - to help you settle in for an enjoyable lunch stop. But if the weather is against us – or if you wish to have your lunch out of the sun there is a comfortable sheltered area with chairs and tables which will be at our disposal. As the Ramble ends for lunch at gardens with over ten acres to explore, consider bringing some comfortable walking shoes. Entry Form Options:

The New Year has begun on a quiet note, with only the working bee on 5 January in which some of the committee members, library and spares team got together. However before this, between Christmas and New Year, we had a father and son team visit from Hamilton. They were on their way back north after purchasing a spare 1916 Hupmobile motor from Blenheim Spares on Boxing Day. They rescued the 1916 Hupmobile Tourer from the family farm, from out the back of Porangahau Central Hawkes Bay. This is their first restoration so we wish them the best of luck. Last weekend Bob, Mike and myself went through to the 22nd Annual Wheels with Attitude Show in Dannevirke. While there we took the opportunity to distribute over 600 flyers for our Swap Meet. The show of vehicles was fantastic. On the way home we took the opportunity to take a look at Michael Hill’s new boat at Foxton Beach. Safe travelling everyone.

Kapiti Coast Mid Week Run (last Wednesday of the month)
Wednesday 27 February 2019 Visit to Gill and Brian Ward’s home at 12 midday 73 Rosetta Rd, Raumati South (aka 73 Hydes Rd) Gill and Brian have kindly offered to host our first ‘run’ of the year with a barbeque lunch at their home. Members attending are encouraged to bring their club-eligible vehicles to add to the display of Brian's interesting cars and memorabilia. All lunch food will be provided but please bring a donation of $5.00 per person to contribute to the cost. Tea and coffee will be provided but otherwise, please bring your favourite tipple should you prefer other refreshment. Directions: From the south, take the first expressway exit then left at the roundabout to Raumati South on to Poplar Avenue. At the end of Poplar Avenue, right into Rosetta Rd. Left into Hydes Rd, opposite Tirimoana Rd. From the north, take the old SH1 to turn right on to Raumati Rd by the Chocolate Factory. At the end of the road, turn left into Rosetta Rd and Hydes Rd will be a little way on your right. Parking: If you bring your club vehicle, please park on the driveway which leads into the garage. If you’re in your modern, there should be ample parking in front of the house but if this is not available (due to wet weather) there is plenty more parking in Hydes Road.
