CLUB CLEANING ROSTER 2018-2019 During the month, and preferably before the main calendar event, please give the clubrooms a thorough check over, as in: Clean the toilets and hand basins, check kitchen, window ledges etc, and sweep the floors. Window cleaning, washing walls etc will be done at working bees. Note any required maintenance and pass on to the Building Officer- Peter Mason, ph 406 1409. If your date doesn’t suit you, please swap with someone else. For any other enquiries please contact the Club Captain.

We had an absolute ripper of a look-in at Kerikeri at Bruce Holmes’ Vintage Transport Museum. Cars, trucks, stationary engines and tractors for Africa. A real big thanks to Bruce and his son Reece for this opportunity. Thanks also to Naomi and Vince for organising this and the short run that followed the visit.
Please support our clubrooms working bee during the month. Matters mechanical: We are seeing some new vehicles on our rallies, in particular from the trusty Holden stable, which is always good to see. As I write this we are preparing for the Spring Tour to the Hawkes Bay with the North Shore Branch. Following a period of uncertainty, we are hoping the electrics behave in our vintage vehicle.
We have some tremendous rallies coming up with members putting a lot of effort into organising these events. More details in Focus. I would also encourage you to participate in Northland Branch’s Far North Tour in early November.

Seemingly continual fuel price increases are a dampener on our rallies, but have little effect on our social activ-
VCC National Day - Daffodil Rally for Cancer Perfect weather, generosity and a good cause contributed to the success of our second annual Daffodil Rally for Cancer raising a record $60,000.00! We had great feedback and attendance for the 2017 event and raised $40,000.00 for the Cancer Society. I am delighted that this year we increased the amount raised by 50%, and I am very proud of our Club and our members who were involved. There were over 3000 vehicles either on the road or on display on the day. Twenty-six branches of the VCC were involved this year and all the money raised will stay in their area and be given directly to the local Cancer Society. Many Branches have commented that the response from the general public has been overwhelming, both in
attendance and in their generosity. One of the lovely outcomes of this event is the interest generated in the Vintage Car Club, which has resulted in new members. I would like to congratulate and thank those Branches involved in the day for their enthusiasm and effort which has not only benefitted the Cancer Society, but also our Club with the public profile it creates. This day is a wonderful achievement for Branches and members who can be very proud of what they have accomplished. Our National Day has become a special event for the Club, and it can only get bigger and better from here! Club Captain Reporting….. Wow! Here we go again! Another month gone! It is good seeing the longer evenings and enjoying the warmer weather. I hope everyone enjoys the daylight saving with the longer evenings and being able to get more things done in daylight. Thank you to everyone who came to the lookin at Bruce Holmes Transport Museum last month. It was good to look through his collection of vintage cars, tractors etc. What a lot he has. Great to see Reece still interested in the cars as well, even owning one of the tractors in the collection. Well done Reece.
fore the Far North Tour. Our Club will be providing the morning tea on the Sunday morning for all the attendees. Unfortunately Vince and I are unable to go as we have to attend a very close family member’s 80th birthday in Auckland Saturday morning. So hopefully we will be able to join the Far North Tour next year. On the 17th November the Classic Car Club are having a show, so anyone who is able to go along and support them, this would be very good. 24th November is our Dunny Run event, organised by Rex and Sandra. This is always a good day out and especially a good time to spend with our Northland branch members from Whangarei and Dargaville who come along.
Our Club working bee is on the 13th October so I hope that many members come along and help give our clubrooms a well needed spruce up and sort out. There will be a pot luck dinner afterwards for thos who wish to stay and relax with us. Rosco and Raewyn’s Mix and Mingle on the 27th October sounds like another great time to relax and meet with other members from other clubs who have been invited, and see the beautiful machines, cars etc that will be there. Shine up your vehicle and take it for a drive. Join us and relax, eat and chat with others.
The end of the year is fast approaching and our months are getting busier as we prepare for Christmas as well. But please take time to join in with our Club events as well that have been organised for all of us to enjoy. We look forward to seeing you there and having a catch up with you. Welfare Report, from Margaret Wallace It is sad to learn that Lorraine Walker is now not doing so well. It is great that Brian and their children are able to care for her so well, and with much love. We are thinking of them all as they deal with this time. We were also sorry to hear that Fred Vuletich has passed away. He hadn’t been too good over the last wee while, and George and Jann did much to care for him. Our thoughts are with George, as he remembers his brother. A card has been sent on behalf of the Club. On a happier note, a little bird informed me that Ruth was celebrating her 86th Birthday! Many congratulations, Ruth. You must just about be the elder statesman! To Preserve a Husband In selecting your husband you should not be guided by the silvery appearance as in buying a mackerel, nor by the golden tints as if you wanted a salmon. Be sure to select him yourself, as tastes differ. Do not go to market for him as the best are always brought to your door. It is far better to have none unless you will patiently learn how to cook. A preserving kettle of the finest porcelain is best. See that the linen you wrap him in is nicely washed and mended, with the required number of buttons and strings tightly sewn on. Tie him to the kettle by strong silk cord called comfort, as the one called duty is apt to be weak. They are apt to fly out of the kettle and be burned and crusty on the edges, since, like crabs and lobsters, you have to cook them alive. Make a clean, steady fire out of love, neatness and cheerfulness. Set him as near this as seems to agree with him. If he sputters and fizzes, do not be anxious; some husbands do this until they ae quite done. Add a little sugar in the form of what confectioners calla bag kisses– but no Many hands soon get through of spuds. pepper or vinegar whatever. Do not stick any sharp instruments into him to see if he is becoming tender. Stir him gently, watching the while lest he lie too close to the kettle and so become useless. You cannot fail to know when he is done.

Grant writes: Hi- was recommended by a fellow enthusiast to ask on here of my dilemma, being a lover of old cars with currently a 68 Mustang, 61 Mk 1 Mini, and now a 57 A35 Austin van which is in a full restore at 85%. One of my trafficators I think has an internal meltdown (just big sparks when connected). Can anyone aid me by having a spare in their box of bits. The model in question is a SF80. I am located in Carterton.

The Roundabout Rally 15 September 2018 th
Around 1900 the automobile’s future was confused. Would electric, stem or gasoline vehicles dominate?
It was a nice fine day for the first outing in the EK Holden. Graeme Moore had spent some time making sure the engine was running smoothly so we were confident there would be no breakdowns.
One of the earliest and best known electric cars was the Waverley. The advertisement below stated it was “not only light and safe, but noiseless, odourless, clean, durable, comfortable and simple in operation.”
We arrived at the Holmes Transport Museum (formerly owned by Peter & Cecelia O’Dell) where we were introduced to Bruce and his son Reece who shares his father’s interest in old vehicles. Bruce told us the building housed his personal collection of vehicles and memorabilia. It is not open to the public, however that may change in the future.

After morning tea in what was previously the café, we were free to wander. There were lots of interesting things to see including a large collection of tractors and various vintage vehicles, old engines and a collection of model cars. I am sure some of the men could have spent longer there however, we then set off on a short tour of the Kerikeri roundabouts which took us to our lunch destination at the Kerikeri Basin Recreation Reserve. There were not many participants but we enjoyed our picnic lunch and were entertained by some of the bantams, roosters and guinea fowl which roam freely at the reserve. Two guinea fowl were particularly interested in their reflections in the shiny bumper of Winston’s Bel Aire much to our amusement. We headed home before the weather deteriorated.
