From your Chairman: October was a busy month for us, Gail and I along with Steve and Joy went to the Taumarunui Rally which is always a great Rally, scenic back country roads and a very friendly atmosphere. We also participated in the Auckland Hunua Rally for the first time. Funny how you usually see the same faces at different Rally’s, but not in Auckland. Of course, we did know some of the rally entrants, but most we didn’t know. Although we did recognise some cars of past, John McKerras’ Sunbeam Roadster which he sold two or three years ago, still in the same condition that he sold it and the owner is enjoying every mile he drives it. Then an Austin 16/6 arrived at the starting point, I recognised it straight away as the car we had owned in the 80’s and 90’s and sold it through Ray Singleton’s Museum Auction in about 93’or 94’. A Museum in Coatesville bought it and there it stayed, slightly worse for wear, until the new owner bought it. With an engine recondition and new tyres the new owner said he will keep it mostly original with its original 1929 upholstery. It is great to see these old cars that you have owned or were familiar with in the past still in good hands. Gets you thinking of the cars that you have owned in the past and why you sold and if they are still on the road. I checked CarJam on a couple of my past Austin Seven’s and sure enough they were still registered with current WOF’s an interesting exercise if you can remember the registration number. Maybe we could write articles on the cars we have owned in our younger days, they would all be Vintage now and probably worth a lot more than what we sold them for. On Club Night Steve asked for a working bee at the parts containers. Bright and early Saturday morning 7 guys and 3 girls arrived to move parts from the old container to the new container for sorting into their relevant shelves etc at the next working bee. We set fire to the two piles of rubbish left from the demolition of the old cow shed, with fibrolite exploding in the fire and the dry grass trying to burn Garry’s fences, we kept it under control with the old bottles of Lion Red that had been left in the old container and a long pole by ‘Pyro Pete’. Steve now knows what cattle feel when they are branded, by some hot number 8 wire. A great morning tea was served by the girls and we sat around on the club chairs in the smoke of the fire solving the problems of the world. Then a guy from Levin arrived to take away the old hen cages piled by the fence, we loaded his trailer for him, then off he went back to Levin. We tidied up the area, checked that the fire was okay and called it a day. Thanks to all of those who turned up for the job, not only was it a job well done, it was a sort of a social occasion as well. Thanks girls for your help and smoko.

Club Captain Report Masterton 50th Anniversary Rally 12th to 14th October. Tessa and I took our MGB down to this enjoyable event even though the weather was not the best. The rally on the Saturday had over 90 cars and three different routes that frequently crossed over each other so following the car in front was not a good idea. There was along route of 115 miles, a short route of 80 miles and a touring route of 140 miles. The rally started from their Clareville Club Rooms and all met at the lunch stop at Eketahuna and the rally finished back at the Club Rooms. The dinner and prize giving were at the Copthorne Hotel. We managed to come first in the Long Run Post 60 Class.
The Gymkhana and public display was at the Solway Racecourse on the Sunday. It was a big event with other Car Clubs, tractors and stalls. Despite the weather the Club raised over $2,000 in gate takings. The October Club Run was on Labour Weekend Sunday, so numbers were down. It was a Cultural and Historic run with 12 sites around town needing to be visited to get some dates and names. It also required to be done in the shortest possible distance. The Spackman's speedo showed the least mileage but there were questions as to its accuracy. John Twaddle in his lime green Morris Minor and John and Margaret McKerras in their red Peugeot got full marks on the questions. Afternoon tea was put on by Lytle and Marlene at their home which was an ideal place to finish the day at. We have two club events coming up in November.

First is the Gisborne Visit during the first weekend. We are meeting at the car park at Rex Morpeth Park at 11.00am on the Friday morning and weather permitting we hope to have a picnic lunch in the Waioeka Gorge. Friday there is a BBQ at their Club Rooms from 6.00pm. ..Saturday Morning is free, there is a farmers market. Saturday afternoon the Rally starts at the Club Rooms at 1.30pm. Dinner and Prize giving from 6.00pm at the Club Rooms. Sunday morning cup of tea and the parts shed will be open The second is another inter club visit to Rotorua, Taupo, BOP, South Waikato and us. This one is on Sunday 18th November and is a largely social occasion. All the Clubs meet for a BYO lunch (tea and coffee supplied) at the Te Amorangi Steam Museum at 43 Robinson Avenue, Holdens Bay. Robinson Avenue is off Te Ngae Road next to McDonalds. Park down the back. We will meet at the gravel pit at the top Kawerau turn off at 10.30am. Christmas Parades and Chairman's Run are in the Calendar of Events. North Island VCC Club Captain's Tour 7-13 March 2019. It could be a good idea to put these dates in your diary. The Route starts in Tauranga then takes in Taupo, Hawkes Bay, Manawatu and finishes in Wanganui. Barry From the Secretary Gosh the end of the year is really racing around now, I hope you all are able to find some time to enjoy the use of whatever vehicle you may own and to take part in one of your Club’s activities at some stage. Like our bodies it could be a case of ‘use it or lose it’! Check out the list of Up-coming events elsewhere in your Running Board. From the Editor’s Desk It has been a busy month for John and I. Finally, he managed to get a Sunday free so we could attend the October Club Run. It was a beautiful warm day and driving around with the top down felt great. Our temperature indicator showed 25 degrees and it certainly felt like it. Even the wind was warm. I was intending to do a write up on the run, however I was beaten to it by Bruce Seddon who enjoyed the run so much, he went straight home and wrote a report and it was in my in-box the next day. Thank you, Bruce, very much appreciated. Bruce’s Chrysler looked great that day – could have been straight out of “The Untouchables” which we happened to watch last night. Only difference was – the episode was not in colour and Bruce’s car did not have guns or gangsters inside it. Talking about that, notice how instantly these old cars start on the TV programs and there always seems to be a park available just where they want one. Can’t say the same for real life though. The November Club run promises to be a good one. It is a combined run with other Clubs in the BOP and Waikato area. Below is from an email sent to us by the Run Organiser Dave Tomlinson. I have met with management at Te Amorangi Museum and advised them our plan is to have groups from different start points try and get to the museum around 11.30am on November 18th. The museum is down ROBINSON AVE, which is off SH30 just south of Rotorua airport, and has a Macdonalds on the corner. The carpark is right beside the lunch area, which will be handy, but there are no gates or fences at the back, so no “entry” process, so I would ask each branch collect their $10pp (max $20 per car if more than 2 in car), and then I will collect all monies and take to the museum office. They will have all their steam machinery operating, including their large steam engine. BYO chairs and mats for lunch, there is only limited indoor or covered seating available. Rotorua branch will be supplied complimentary tea at coffee at the venue, but all else is BYO for lunch. In the event weather is really bad, we will travel to the VCC clubrooms for lunch. At the last EBOPVCC meeting one of the members, Peter Jordan enquired about what he should do as he had some vehicles he was thinking of selling. So, John and I went out to have a look and take some photos. Well! The treasures that people have in their sheds that no-one knows about. Peter lives out at Awakeri with his wife Alie on a large lifestyle block with lots of shed space – I mean huge. He has lived in the area all his life and worked as a diesel mechanic in Tasman Mill, as well as growing feijoas for several years. As we drove up the drive I knew we were in the right place as peeking out of one of the sheds was a beautiful 1955 Mk VIII Hillman Minx Convertible. It has only done around 48,000 original miles and has mostly been owned by members of the McDonald family in Waiuku. What a lovely wee car, it has charm and elegance, with some TLC this would be an absolute winner.
Further inside the shed is a 1934 Hillman Sedan with a superb paint job. While the
motor is out of it, having just been overhauled, it is all complete, waiting to go back in along with the front seats etc. etc.

Moving further into the shed, there are two Fergusson tractors crouching there – one a petrol engine and it was going before Peter collected it, however it has been sitting for a while in his shed.
The other – a 1956 Fergusson diesel. The radiator has been repaired and the injector pump works.

Coromandel Charity Cruise 2019 Newsletter # 2 Our sincere apologies for not getting back to you last month as promised but we have some good news for you all. Thanks to those of you who replied to our request for a show of interest to hold or not to hold this event again next year. Following the cancellation this year due to the big storm and king tide back in January, we are pleased to announce that we will be staging the event again next March 16th – 17th. We have a whole new event planned for Whitianga‌ but more on this later. In the meantime if you could help spread the word around your club/friends so they can mark it on their calendar for next year. Early bird entries will open on the 1st October 2018 at a cost of $50 per vehicle through to 31st December, after that entry fees will be $60 through to the 11th March 2019. October Club Run Barry advertised October’s run as a Cultural and Historic Run – and he was true to his word. Nine cars plus the afternoon’s host (Lytle) turned up at Bunnings to be given their maps and a list of points of interest to answer questions about. The route was decided by the participants with the objective of answering all the questions while covering the least amount of distance by the speedos. If I had known that in advance I would have turned up with one of
our several cars that is not currently recording mileages correctly.
Three of us covered the course solo – Trevor, John and I – although Trevor had little Tina’s help (9 month puppy). Everyone got to brush up on their knowledge of Whakatane’s cultural and historical icons through visiting various marked points. Did you know when the items buried at the Gap in the Strand will be retrieved? 12
Or how deep Sullivan’s Lake is – or even where Sullivan’s Lake is? How about when Whakatane’s flax and flour mills were established? I did know that Eve Rimmer had been honoured with a park named for her, but had never seen it. When I looked at the list I thought as a relative newcomer to the area that I would be lost, but with Barry and Tessa’s thoughtful provision of street names I got to 11 of the 12 points. The last point I thought I had but got the wrong one (in Golf Links Road). Surprisingly all the cars recorded mileages within a mile of each other with Mark and Karen taking the top fish with a perfect set of answers and the lowest mileage reading. Alison commented that she had driven past some of the signs for years and never noticed some of the dates or details. So area knowledge wasn’t everything. The run ended at Lytle and Marlene Hall’s sunny backyard for a well received afternoon tea. Marlene’s and Trevor’s tiny dogs decided they would be good friends after some circling and Marlene’s little one almost went home with
