From your Chairman: The Night Owl Run this year was expertly plotted by Margaret and Keith Watson. Starting from the Athletic Clubrooms in pitch dark (as should be for a Night Owl Run). At one minute intervals we headed into the night, down Domain Road, over the bridge, around Gateway looking for questions, quite hard in the dark and we missed one. On, to Keepa Road, Ferguson Road and into Huna Road. Some, I believe, missed this turn and went off toward the airport (it was a great night for a cruise). Back into town and around the streets, how it’s easy to get confused at night on streets that you are familiar with. Then of course the sign we had all been looking for had been turned around. Having discovered this, it was back to the Clubrooms and to draw a Kiwi and a Ruru (not a Kangarooroo, but an Owl), that was our demise, our Kiwi looked like a haystack with a beak and our Ruru looked like a pussy cat. (Navigator is a rubbish artist, but can type his reports) Not to worry it was all great fun. The Pot Luck Dinner that followed was up to our lady members’ usual high standards and was a great spread. After we had had our fill of dinner and dessert, it was time for prize-giving, after lots of laughter and good hearted banter Robyn and Peter Hadley were declared the winners of Lorolei’s Night Owl Trophy and miniature Owl. Then Lorolei’s Night Owl Raffle was drawn and won by Lorraine and Bruce Seddon who were pleased to look into it (pun) see photo’s. A great evening was had by all who were there. Thanks to the ladies for the food, Keith and Margaret for plotting the run and Lorolei for the Night Owl Trophy and Owl miniature and of course the Night Owl Raffle which she has donated for more years than I can remember. In the last few months Gail and I have been going through the Branch’s archives looking for Members VCC joining dates, so that we can arrange for presentation of 25 and 35 year badges. A lot of the Branch Minutes and Joining Applications etc are missing (does anyone know where they are) so it was quite time consuming looking for enough detail to send to Head Office for these badges. The good news is we have identified six Members who are eligible for a 25 or 35 year badge. With Committee and Members approval we are holding a luncheon at the Athletic Clubrooms on Sunday 12th August to celebrate these 25 and 35 year milestones with the recipients. Harry and Gay will be the chefs on the day (remember the run to their place last year and the meal we had) and how good it was, well this will be the same. The meal will be paid for by the Club with no cost to Members. Please keep the 12th of August free for this event, an email will follow soon as we will need to know numbers attending, for catering. Newsflash: Our new container is now in place, thanks to Garry and David Bryson and Mahy Cranes. An email will go out in the next couple of weeks for a working bee at the site, so if you have a couple of hours spare on the day, your help will be appreciated. Les

Club Captain Report July 2018 Three of our members went to the Waikato Double 50. It was their 60th Anniversary so the theme of the rally the Sensational 60's. There were about 75 entrants, 10 touring, 16 vintages, 7 PVs, 13 PWs, 23 P60s, 4 P80s. Steve came 2nd in the P80 Class in his recently acquired Cortina. It was a good well set rally with tricky bits which caught many people out including us. The weather on Saturday was cloudy but fine. During the rally on Sunday it started to rain after lunch but was not heavy. During the trip back on Monday there were a few showers. But around Lake Rotoma we had a puncture. As we stopped a guy pulled up behind us and he had an electric pump that plugged into his cigarette lighter. He was on his way to Opotiki. We got enough air into the tyre to drive along to the Lake Rotoma boat ramp car park to get off the main road. It started to rain and while we waited for it to stop a young couple parked near to us to eat their lunch. The shower stopped and the guy in the car came across and offered to help which he did so and the spare went on in record time. They were Massey University students on their way to Whakatane. The next day I took the tube down to a local tyre shop to be repaired. When the time came to pay for the repair they said to forget about it and take it away. So the inconvenience of the puncture turned out to be not much of an inconvenience at all thanks to good kiwi folk. My carburettor has challenged me. Our 1973 MG has a Weber twin choke carburetor. Two of the 10 jets have a small ball bearing in them. While cleaning it I managed to drop one of these ball bearings down the wrong jet hole. This hole that is exactly the same size as the ball bearing and it got stuck in it about 10mm from the top.. The arrow in the photo points to the hole the ball bearing went down. To get it out we tried using blue tack which made it worse, we also took the carb off and banged it on the bench and as well hit with a wooden hammer, then tried narrowing down the suction end of the vacuum cleaner to suck it out. All this with no success. We then took it to Grant's Autos and then to Eastern Bay Auto Electricians who tried using magnets. After that we left it with KP Autocraft to work on the problem and he tried various ways including using a magnet and a heat gun. My next step was to take it to Graeme Tulloch a Carburetor specialist in Levin. We were visiting our son there so it fitted in well. After much discussion we settled on drilling a small hole through the side of the Carburetor just below the ball bearing, then to block off the choke jet that was fed air from the 4
blockage with heat sealant tubing and with a pointed nose grease gun pump grease in the hole to force the ball bearing out. When I got home I very carefully did this and low and behold the ball bearing came out which was much to my relief. I then spent the next hour cleaning the choke jet and getting the grease out and used a small self tapping screw to seal the drilled hole. I am now waiting for a new gasket set to arrive before putting it back on the car and then I hope that the missing problem that I originally had will have gone away. The Night Owl Run. Keith and Margaret set a very good rally which had us thinking and being alert. The winners were Peter and Robyn Hadley with Les and Gail Costar second and Alan and Lorraine Stock 3rd. The raffle winners were Bruce and Lorraine Seddon. And the pot luck tea was fabulous.
The July Town and Country Run is now being held on Sunday 29th July. We start at 1.30pm from Bunnings Car Park and the directions take us through town as well as the country. We finish for afternoon tea at Peter and Robyn Hadley's log home. Their house is at the end of a long driveway and has views down over Whakatane. Nobby's Nosh. This annual dinner is coming up on the first Tuesday evening in August which is the 7th. We meet at the Whakatane RSA at 5.30pm and dinner is at 6.00pm. The August Club Run will be the VCC National Daffodil Day Rally, similar to last year but with a different starting and ending point which this year will be opposite Briscoes at the Hub for both. The date is Sunday the 26th and we start at 1.00pm, do a tour through town and back at the Hub we have a public display and hopefully the collectors will get lots of money from the public. It concludes at about 3.00pm.

From the Editor’s Desk Well I think that Winter has finally arrived if today is anything to go by. As I write this I hear on the news that some roads are closed through slips and snow.

So - spare a thought for those hardy (or dedicated?) motorcycle riders who attend the 38th Brass Monkey Motorcycle Rally at Oturehua on the Maniatoto Plain. I understand that the weather lived up to the names’s reputation again and it was an enjoyable time. As a young girl, our family lived at Hills Creek – 5 kms from Oturehua and we had snow on the ground a lot, at this time of the year. Magic place though – cold as charity in the Winter and hot as Hades in the Summer. I have some very good memories of living there. I read that Kaaren and Jim Smyllie from the Tauranga Branch recently took part in the Irishman Creek rally which they enjoyed immensely and are planning to go again next year. Her article in the July Klaxon is really worth a read so for those of you, who have a computer, go onto the Head Office web site www.vcc.org and check it out. That part of Canterbury is really unique and you drive on roads that one normally doesn’t get to see. Perhaps next year some of us from our branch could look at going too. It would be a lot of fun. Putting this magazine together sometimes is an arduous task and at times I struggle to get interesting write-ups or photos to insert. It seems that there are only a few members who regularly provide information so - it would be great to hear from you if you have anything to report. This is your magazine and I know that the members do like to read about your cars and your travels. So please give that some thought. Another thing that I would like to see is your car on the front of the Running Board. If you email me a photo of your car and some detail – make, model and year, I will make sure that it is showcased there. In the meantime, happy and safe motoring. Margaret
