Members from each area are encouraged to coerce, kidnap or bring along as many members from your area as you can as there may be a bit of friendly competition. Will your area come out on top? November 18 — Sunday Run — We will meet at the clubrooms in Cromwell at 11:00 am and leave for Frankton at about 11:15. Anyone with slower cars will leave first. Those from the Wakatipu area can meet us at about 12:15 in the picnic area at the BUZZSTOP and the BARN, 26 Hansen Road, Frankton. Hansen Road is opposite the Events Centre. Lunch: You can bring your own lunch or buy it there, same goes for tea and coffee. Bring your wallet as the ladies will want to have a look in the Barn and the Buzzstop after lunch. Further instructions will be given at that time for the next stop.

Chairman's Report With the Blossom Festival rally successfully behind us, we will soon be in Christmas mode. The committee has been busy organizing a full calendar of events. It has become increasingly important that now we have a separate committee meeting, we notify the members of our decisions. 1. With the Daffodil day past it was felt that the club will just have one venue for the event, being Cromwell because having 3 venues creates extra work and also separates our members. 2. We are looking into cost for the purchase of Club's advertising banner.We feel that the Club needs more event advertising to promote the club. 3. We still need to appoint Club Captain. The committee has a full program till Easter next year. So if we can appoint someone soon the task will be reasonably light and easy for someone to get into the system. Please talk to a committee member if you can help. 4. The Lion's are still very active with the proposal of building a Men's Shed on our Litany Street frontage. We are still waiting for the proposal to come from the Council. Our life member George Page has had a bad fall from scaffolding on his work site injuring his head and shoulder. He is recovering at home. It has interrupted the restoration of his hupmobile including the re-installing of the motor, which Graham Taylor and George just last week put together. He also had to cancel his Hupmobile Rally to Australia. We wish George the best in his road to recovery. Over the last two weeks, we have been blessed with two Club events. Carmen Doran talked at our monthly Club night about her motoring experience competing in Mongol Rally, driving from England to the Mongolian capital of Ulin Balor in a One-Litre Renault Kangoo. A distance of 20,000 kilometers unsupported across 15 countries. She also talked about the trip with her husband Matt when they bought a Lotus Elan and cruised around the UK before returning to New Zealand. On their return they participated with their 4-month old son in the re-enactment of Goodbye Pork Pie from North Cape to Bluff in a Mini-Cooper. Carmen is the daughter of Greg and Karelan Doran. The other Club event last weekend was a visit to Garth Hogan's at Wanaka. Garth has a house full of interesting cars, plane, memorabilia, including Ford, Lincoln, hotrods, Mustang. Thanks. Minutes last Committee Meeting The minutes of the last meeting are not available due to problems with the club computer.
I came across this car at a car show in Alberta. It is a Berlina Coupe SE. They were built by the Philip Motor Company in Pompano Beach, Florida. They were designed by Charles W. Philips in the style of the 1936 Mercedes Benz 540 Special Roadster. It used a stretched C3 Corvette chassis coupled to a fibreglass body. It also contained other Corvette amenities such as automatic transmission, power windows and locks, power steering and brakes, air conditioning, cruise control and power seats etc. They used a 350 ci ( 5.7 L ) Chevy small block V8 with a top speed of about 110 MPH. The cars were in production from about 1980 to 1983 ( the SE model started about 1982 ) and sold for around $85,000 to $100,000 while the Corvette of that year sold for about $20,000 to $22,000. Don
The teacher was teaching the class about the speed of light and had just quoted it’s speed as 299,792 km per second. “Wow” said Tommy “ So what’s the speed of dark”. My wife sat down next to me as I was flipping channels. She asked “What’s on TV”? I said “Dust”. And then the fight started.

Editors Comments First of all I would like to thank Graham Taylor for the time and effort that he has put in as editor of the Puff’n Stuff for the past 6 years. I would also like to thank him for carrying on as editor while we were on holiday and for his assistance in helping us get set up to take over from him. Very much appreciated. The guest speaker at our last Club Night was Carmen Doran, Carmen gave us a very enjoyable talk on some of her experiences participating in various Rallies. The Mongol Rally, the Dakar Challenge, going over all the mountain passes in Switzerland in their Lotus Elise and the Pork Pie Run in New Zealand. A few of us were starting to turn green with envy as she related her experiences on these trips. Following Carmen’s talk, Murray Pryde showed us some slides of his recent visit to the U.K. and in particular his visit to the Goodwood Revival. The Goodwood Revival is a three day festival held each September at Goodwood Circuit since 1998 for the types of road racing cars and motorcycles that would have competed during the circuits original period 1948-1966. There were some very beautiful and expensive cars. You may notice a few changes in the presentation of the magazine , then again you may not as most of them are fairly minor. As we are novices at this job and this is your club magazine, we would appreciate any contact from members regarding both the content and the layout. This is your chance, we can’t change what you don’t like if you don’t ask. We would also invite you as club members to submit “Letters to the editor”. If we had enough response to this then it could become a regular feature each month. We may also be contacting some of you in the future to present an article , possibly Technical Tips, a profile on you car or cars about it’s history and/or it’s restoration. Nothing too onerous and maybe include a photo or two. Who knows? Watch this space. Don

Sunday Run Oct 14 This month’s Sunday run was held in beautiful spring weather. We met at the Warbirds Café at Wanaka Airport. Our first stop was to visit Garth Hogan’s Property on Mt Aspiring Road, just outside Wanaka. Garth’s collection included cars, trucks, hot rods, an airplane and a variety of V8 engines. Before anyone gets upset about the hot rod, Garth assured us that no vintage vehicles were harmed in the production of the hot rod. The body is fibre glass and the chassis was purpose built. The cars included a Model T, a rare English Ford, Mustangs, Lincolns, and a Cadillac. He is also working on building an old style race car from plans that his father had. Our thanks to Garth for a very informative and entertaining hour and a half. Next stop, for those that wanted, was at the Cardrona Hotel for afternoon tea in their lovely garden. The mulled wine was lovely too! All in all a very enjoyable way to spend an afternoon. A great day for motoring, great company and a very interesting motor collection. Lynne

A message from Diane Quarrie VCCNZ National President VCC National Day - Daffodil Rally for Cancer
Perfect weather, generosity and a good cause contributed to the success of our second annual Daffodil Rally for Cancer raising a record $60,000.00! We had great feedback and attendance for the 2017 event and raised $40,000.00 for the Cancer Society. I am delighted that this year we increased the amount raised by 50%, and I am very proud of our Club and our members who were involved. There were over 3000 vehicles either on the road or on display on the day. Twenty-six branches of the VCC were involved this year and all the money raised will stay in their area and be given directly to the local Cancer Society. Many Branches have commented that the response from the general public has been overwhelming, both in attendance and in their generosity. One of the lovely outcomes of this event is the interest generated in the Vintage Car Club, which has resulted in new members. I would like to congratulate and thank those Branches involved in the day for their enthusiasm and effort which has not only benefitted the Cancer Society, but also our Club with the public profile it creates. This day is a wonderful achievement for Branches and members who can be very proud of what they have accomplished. Our National Day has become a special event for the Club, and it can only get bigger and better from here! Pop the date for next year’s Daffodil Rally for Cancer in your diary now‌ Sunday 25 August 2019.

PETROL LIFE IN VEHICLE TANKS As we are about to start the summer season of Runs and Rallies with our old cars that have probably not been used for some months, perhaps it may be an appropriate time to review the stale fuel issue. It is difficult to get hard ,verifiable facts regarding stale fuel as everyone seems to have a different opinion or experience with it. The following is derived from discussions with various people, reading any relevant articles that I could find and a small amount of personal experience. There is a very wide range of opinions on the topic so do not necessarily take this as gospel and consult the experts should you have problems. Petrol is a mixture of many components ( over 100 I am told) with different properties that contribute to the performance of the fuel. When petrol is left out in an open container exposed to the air it will, in time, completely evaporate. As it evaporates the composition and properties will change because different components evaporate at different rates. This is a normal feature of petrol and the same process takes place in our vehicle fuel tanks. Generally petrol will last in equipment fuel tanks for about 3 weeks at a temperature of around 20 deg C, after that it will perform better when fresh petrol is added. Petrol will last in sealed containers for more than 6 months, while some breathing will take place this is not enough to significantly affect product quality. In underground storage tanks the rate of replenishment prevents the fuel from becoming stale.
HOW PETROL CHANGES IN OUR VEHICLE TANKS Loss of the lighter components: Impact on mixture and octane — The lighter components in petrol are lost first. These components provide valuable octane benefits during cold start. These are very volatile and compose most of the air-fuel mixture during initial start up. If they are absent then the result can often be hard starting. This evaporation of the lighter components also creates density and octane level changes which can promote carbon deposits which will foul the spark plugs causing engine stumbles and hesitations or cut outs. The loss of these components can also cause pre ignition, detonation and possible piston damage especially in higher revving engines such as boat engines and chain saws etc.

Long storage periods, especially in hot weather can also cause the petrol to oxidize and form peroxides and gums. These components can attack rubber and metal thus affecting fuel pumps, fuel lines and rubber hoses. As well, the “gums’” or “varnish” are solid material which form and line the inside of the carburetor and blocking the small bores and jets, thus affecting the functioning of the carburetor. Stale fuel is reputedly the number one cause of stiff diaphragms and the main cause of carburetor rebuilds. Gums and varnish can also possibly stick the piston rings causing extensive failure. However this usually takes a few months to form in sufficient quantity to cause a problem. The process is faster if Ultra Violet light can get to the petrol.
Condensation; Condensation can also form in your fuel tank and fuel lines. Fuels which have a higher concentration of ethanol may be even more susceptible to water contamination as ethanol likes to draw moisture out of the surrounding air. All in all the experts seem to agree that there are too many variables to determine exactly when petrol goes bad but they all urge caution. Your car will probably start on stale fuel but it’s performance could be significantly reduced.

use a type of petrol stabilizer and run your vehicle to distribute this mixture through the carburetor etc. Fuel stabilizer will not last forever and will not restore stale petrol. Keep your tank full when storing it to help reduce condensation build up. However you may wish to drain most of this and add fresh fuel when bringing the vehicle out of storage. You could try draining your fuel tank before storage but this may cause rubber hoses , gaskets, seals and carburetor diaphragms to dry out and become brittle. Keep driving your car throughout the year instead of putting it up on blocks for 6 months, therefore the frequent topping up of the fuel tank prevents stale fuel and condensation.
Choice number 4 would allow you to get year round enjoyment and also you could attend more rallies and Sunday runs with us.

The Parts Department is the place to go if you are looking for that electrical and related bits; points, condensers, spark plugs, distributor caps including some magneto caps, and that is only part of two shelves. A lot of this is NOS . At the working bee the floor in the tunnel barn has been cleared, there are quite a few bits for Triumph 2000 s and Hillman hunters including instruments Carburettors manifolds, steering racks, also quite a lot of BMC stuff. There are filters, fanbelts, gaskets, motors, gearboxes, new speedo conversion drives ie mph to KPH make your car 20% faster! We are selling a quantity of 200 universal beam (RSJ) in good condition. 3x 6m , 6x 3.1m, 4 x 3,9m $25per m or $1000.00 the lot. Build mum a clothesline.
