Nine vehicles lined up at the start , plus other cars. On the way several vehicles developed problems and the drivers reverted to Moderns for the run. This was a serious rally.

organised by Rod and Scarlett McKenzie After lunch a drive through the farm to visit the “Bibby Family Church” built in 1911 and beautifully maintained, it has lovely stained glass windows with Hawke’s Bay themes, and it is still used for a variety of services. Off downhill to highway 50 and onto Ongaonga for an ice cream. Then using the back roads back to Waipukurau. I am pleased to report that the Rover performed well, even cruising at 40 MPH on the flats much to everyone’s astonishment.

Dinner at the Pub with everyone participating in the evenings entertainment starting with a sketch with a motoring theme and in teams to complete words, colouring etc, a lot of fun. Sunday was a combined run with Hawkes Bay VCC to Waikareao Station about 16 miles from town. There was a great group of vehicles including 5 veterans, I counted 58. Steve Antstis and Wife had sold their property approx. half way up the Parapara’s and purchased the station about 18 months ago. Great grounds and a nice day for lunch on the lawn.

A number of Hawke’s Bay VCC members remembered the Rover being build in the 1980’s by Ces Bishop. They were pleased to see the Van on the road and going so well, thanks to the work by Ian Chamberlain and others, especially the correcting of the timing issues. Coming home, a stone through the windscreen of my Ssangyong put a damper on what otherwise had been a great motoring weekend in the company of a group of 100 plus year old vehicles. written by Neil Farrer.

Our Annual trip to Waipukurau which we have been going to since 2005 started well with an uneventful drive from Whakatane. On arrival we met for takeaways at the McKenzie’s home giving us time to catch up with friends and meet new people.

On Saturday morning nine veterans and an assortment of other cars assembled at Tavistock Place. It was good to see the Barton’s 1908 Holsman back on the road it certainly fulfils the image of a horseless carriage. With the previously mentioned car , our Studebaker and Neil Farrer’s Rover being the only out of club Veterans. I suspect the clash with the National Veteran rally meant reduced numbers. The rally started with two stops within and around Waipuk, first to view and purchase some glass jewellery and an old Commer Truck. Then on for morning tea at an interesting house and garden. The home of the Winlove Family. This home has many original features which have been retained as it has been converted for modern living . We then enjoyed a good long run inland to arrive at “ Lunesdale” the home of the Bibby family. The house with its magnificent views is the same year,1903 as the Holly and a year older than Napoleon!! Both these cars got up the hill to lunch but unfortunately the Holsman and a couple of local T fords kept the tail end Charlie people busy. Afterlunch we drove through the farm to visit the Bibby Family church where we were given more family history. Then back home via the traditional ice creams at Ongaonga .

The day concluded with a dinner at the Leopard Hotel. As this rally is relaxed and non-competitive we had to compete before eating. Each table had to draw a cartoon of a Veteran Car, we had enjoyed many versions during the day on our rally sheets. The version of the Holsman came out the winner, all works of art were auctioned with the winner being purchased at a high price by the local establishment !! This friendly well organised rally is one we hope to return to again in 2019. 3

HB Branch Annual Homestead Rally 2018 â€”

organised by Rod and Scarlett McKenzie This year the 2018 Homestead Rally combined the day with the HB Branch. The Rally started at the Zinc Cafe, Northumberland Street Waipukarau, with about 8 veteran cars, and a great turnout of 52 classic cars. The veteran cars departed first on a not so testing run to Waikareao Station owned by Steve and Trish Antstis. The classic cars travelled out via Middleton, Nichols, Lake and Porangahau Roads travelling four miles to the venue. Rod McKenzie welcomed everyone to the homestead, which was built about 1920. It was a lovely setting for our picnic lunch on the lawn surrounded by a beautiful rose garden, a tennis court and swimming pool. Peter Coleman a Wanstead resident for most of his life, gave a great account of the history of the property, going back to square one. Steve and Trish the new owners had not been in possession very long. A $10 00 donation per car was collected at the gate for the H.B.Rescue Helicopter, a very worthy cause. A very successful day and Iâ€™m sure enjoyed by all.

Sunday 9th December 2018 — CHB VCC Branch Christmas Party Organisers—Laurie and Gloria Malcolmson To be held at Kumeti (Phillips’ property Car Museum) Te Rehunga — Cost per person $15.00. This event will be a 1960’s theme party, so get out your 1960’s clothing, or visit your local “Op Shop” lets have a great time and Christmas Party!! Please bring a “Secret Santa” unisex gift, costing no more than $5.00 per gift (for Santa to distribute). The Branch Committee will arrange and provide all the meats. You will need to provide salads and desserts to add to the meal as well as your own plates, cups, glasses and cutlery. URGENT For barbeque meat catering, please contact Shirley Foot on(06 858 8301) NO later than Monday 3rd December to let her know the number of people coming in your car and what salads/desserts you intend bringing for the shared Christmas meal. We will all meet in Dannevirke in the car park opposite the Mangatera Hotel at 3.00pm so we can all travel out together as a “Follow-the-leader”. Those of the branch who live in Waipukurau may wish to “car pool” as we are not having a formal run. Moderns will be quite acceptable. Sunday 16th December 2018—Reliability Run— organized by Seton and Judy Thomsen Meet at the foot of the Pukeora Hill (north side) by "Forest of Memory" off Pukeora Scenic Road at 10.00am for a cuppa and briefing before we begin. Each car will do two runs up and over the hill. Both runs will be timed. The car closest to the two run times will be our most reliable driver. We will have our picnic lunch between drivers first and second runs. Bring your chairs as well as your usual picnic requirements. Toilet on site. Chairman's Report Since my last report we have been doing what I advise others to do –“seeing our own country”. In this instance the South Island’s West Coast (my old stamping ground) per modern car with radio, heater and windscreen wipers. Not to mention air con for those blistering West Coast days (in between the showers). Secondly we rode the Forgotten Highway per bus and travelled on the return trip from Whangamomona to Taumauranui in golf carts along the railway line – a must do for everyone. (No radio, heater or windscreen wipers and air con by side curtains.) Fortunately the weather was kind and it was wonderful. Thought not a VCC event, it brings me to mention that, through the VCC and its individual branches and – further still – its individual members and organising committees, we get to see and experience places and events not readily as accessible to the general public. The Branch does not seem to have collapsed due to my absence at our last meetings but word must have got out because there was a great turnout on the 23rd of 45 members including two new members, who enjoyed the venue at the Waipukurau Club and complimented the caterers on the fine food. There was no attendance at the A & P Show this year, due to a shortage of space we were not invited. The creation of artificial turf sports fields at a cost of many hundreds of thousands of dollars has crowded the A & P grounds somewhat. Hence the crush but the town now has an additional facility to add to the heated pool and stadium complex which are hugely successful. The recent Veteran Rally organised by Rod and Scarlett went well and suffered only from a lack of numbers. This was followed next day by a homestead run incorporating members of three branches and cars of varying ages. Good weather and a great turnout. There is much happening throughout the Christmas period so keep your eye on the “Bleat” and don’t look up as the reindeer pass overhead.

GUMBOOT RALLY — 31st December 2018—1st January 2019 At this stage we have eight cars and seventeen people going to Taihape for the Gumboot Rally. The run has been prepared by John and Shirley Foot and the plan is to leave Waipukurau at around 8.30am the morning of 31st December to travel through to Ashurst for morning tea. Then travel on to Kimbolton for a picnic lunch at Glyn and Kathy Clements home. After lunch we will travel through to Taihape. This part of the run has been prepared by Glyn Clement. Dinner on the 1st December and will be held at the Gretna Hotel, Taihape. The Manor Restaurant has closed down.

Rod’s Rattling's The Veteran Run Scarlett and I organized and ran was only modestly supported by veteran owners, but numbers were boosted by marshals and supporters who followed along for the day. I strongly believe that in future the event needs to be for “Veteran” and “Vintage” vehicles being held at the same time, probably going by a different route to the same lunch venue. However, those that came along had fun during the day with their old cars, and into the evening with their friends. The ”Homestead Run” to Waikareou Station near Wanstead was, however, very well supported by both our CHB branch members and a large group of VCC members from the Hawke’s Bay branch. It seems there were 62 route sheets handed out, so there were obviously 62 entrants for the day. Steve and Trish Anstis had their grounds fabulously presented and welcomed us all like old friends. Coming up in December is the Waipukurau Christmas Parade on 8th December with assembly at 12 00noon. The parade starts at 1.00pm promptly. The branch will need to formally enter if we should want to take part as a “Community Group”. Frankly, I think it would be a waste of time trying to enter a float going by past performances. On 9th December is the branch Christmas Party which Laurie and Gloria Malcolmson have arranged for our members at Phillips’ car museum near Te Rehunga in Dannevirke. Gloria would like someone to take along a CD player for some music, and Bruce Poole will need to take his Father Xmas outfit. Further details will be elsewhere in the “Bleat”. On Sunday 16th, Seton and Judy Thomsen are organising a “Reliability run” around the Pukeora loop. Our folk will need to take along their picnic lunch. Details will be elsewhere in the “Bleat”. On 31st December, a number of CHB members will be heading to Taihape for a couple of nights and a New Year’s Day Rally centered in Taihape. If you would like to take part, contact Bruce Poole who is co-coordinating things from this end. The Summer Beach Run will now be on Sunday 27th January, 2019. We seem to be having a beach run each year in January, and this time it will be held at Shoal Beach at the home of Paul and Judy Jensen who will be hosting the branch. Again, details will be found in the “Bleat”. Ken Lyons and I will be traipsing around CHB in the next few days planning the route for the “North Island Club Captain’s Tour” for early March. We will pick up the rallyists from Havelock North and get them to Waipukurau for dinner at the Waipukurau Hotel. It is a Monday, but I am sure a number of our branch members will like to join the group for a run back to Waipukurau. John and Shirley Foot will be planning a course to see them safely through to Dannevirke the next morning in time for lunch. I would be happy to speak with anybody that has an idea for a monthly run next year. Scarlett and I have a few ideas that someone could easily build on, and it would be a good experience for someone new to arrange something simple for their fellow members. I had some fun a few weeks ago when mentoring young drivers at the EIT. The resident driving instructor, I reasoned, needed some veteran driving instruction, so I took him for driving lessons too …………… in my Model T! He had never been in one before and how to drive one was a new experience for him [try it sometime for your own sanity or other excuse], so we headed off out Racecourse Rd. He could steer the thing well, but the hand throttle, manual advance, crank start and the three pedals initially had him flummoxed. Coming back into town he handed it back to me. “I’m not driving this thing through town”, he said, “someone might see me!”

THE WANDERING FEET — by John & Shirley Foot Friday 5th October we left to go to Hamilton as we had been invited to attend the 60th Birthday of the Waikato Branch of the Vintage Car Club. We arrived in Hamilton at about 4.00pm and shortly after were picked up and taken to one of the Branch members homes for dinner along with several other branch members as well as “BERTIE” the Napier Art Deco famed personality. Saturday was free during the day which gave time for some retail therapy for Shirley, followed by some visiting.

Saturday evening was the main function which was held at the Classics vehicle Museum in Hamilton with 94 persons sitting down to a delicious meal. National President Diane Quarrie along with husband Geoff and North Island Club Captain Kaaren Smyllie and Husband Jim also attended. “BERTIE” was the M/C for the evening. After the first course of the dinner Diane presented one 50 year badge and four 60 year certificates. It was a very pleasant evening with great food and very pleasant company. The next weekend saw us, along with the Harding’s, McKenzie’s and Cross’ travel to the Wairarapa Branch to take part in their 50th Anniversary Rally for which there was 99 entries. The rally day dawned with a frost followed by a very cold wind and showers for the rest of the day. The rally route was over a mix of good sealed and gravel roads with a section of straight line navigation and a short section of silent checks and timing. The route back to the Clubrooms after lunch was a tour. The dinner and prizegiving was held at the Copthorne Hotel in Masterton. During the evening there was a book launch for the History of the Branch that was written by Branch member Maureen Bull. This was followed by a presentation of two long service awards which was followed by the cutting of the cake. Two hundred plus sat down to dinner. On Sunday there was a car show and gymkhana at the Masterton Showground's but the weather really didn’t play it’s part as it was very cold with some light rain at the end. The 18th of October saw us on our way to Auckland to take part in the Auckland Branch annual Hunua 100 Rally. Early next morning Shirley was up and not feeling at all well and after a while we called the ambulance and she was taken to Middlemore Hospital, she had suffered a mild heart attack. Needless to say she didn’t get to do the Rally but was out in time for the dinner and prize giving. I was instructed (by her ladyship) to do the rally and I was lucky enough to have a replacement navigator for this very technical event. It was a well plotted rally of approx.100 miles over very good roads of South Auckland with very little traffic and some great views. On the Tuesday we headed for home and on the way we checked out a section of road for the upcoming North Island Club Captain’s tour in March 2019. This was the first trip over the Napier Taupo Road for the Nissan and I was pleased with the way it performed as it climbed the hills at good speeds and seems to be a very good touring car. A few good days away but good to be home as we have covered a lot of kilometres lately and need to get some work done around the house. 10

This vehicle was bought new in August 1979 by Radio New Zealand in Wellington. It was later bought by an elderly gentleman from Awanui in Northland at about 60,000km who used it until his death. It was left to his daughter upon his demise who used it sparingly until she sold it to the present owner. The car appears to have been treated with “Tectyl” from new as there is little sign of rust. Recent exhaust system, rear shocks and two tyres. It has Rego and WOF.
