Chairman’s Report Many thanks to Greg and Gail Lamb, organisers of this year's Annual Rally which was held in a different format. Club Captain Greg used his initiative and turned the day “upside down” by having morning tea, field tests and lunch at Cutler Park before entrants took part in the motoring side of the rally in the afternoon. As I mentioned last month, your Branch Committee would like to organise rallies/runs/ events that you would enjoy, so....... if you have any bouquets or brickbats following the rally, please contact Greg – he is interested in hearing your feedback and constructive comments. By a happy coincidence, members of the club's Management Committee were meeting in Christchurch that day, and they joined us for the prizegiving dinner at Cutler Park. Our National President, Diane Quarrie introduced them to us and it was a pleasure for the entrants of the rally to be able to put a face to the name. I hope they took the opportunity of meeting them personally too. The delicious meal provided by the Sword family and the bar service from Gill and Kevin Stevenson would have been appreciated by them as well as the entrants. Also attending the meal were some other visitors – we were pleased to meet up again with Linda and Rob O'Keeffe from Wanganui branch and also it was good to meet Hedi and Carl Hanson from Canada, who were travelling with Kay and Graeme Shaskey. It is just over three months until our Branch AGM. I am standing down as Chairman at the meeting and some branch committee members are also contemplating finishing their term then. As it is so often said, you get back what you put in - please consider putting your name forward or nominating another member for a position on the committee. Fresh faces, fresh ideas – this must be good for branch life. Leigh 6
SECRETARY’S REPORT Christine and I are travelling north in the 1937 Rover to attend Art Deco week in Napier so will be unavailable for the second half of February. I attended the start of the Annual Rally at Cutler Park on 11 February, and was impressed with the change in format, with an extended morning tea and field tests done in a leisurely fashion. This gave entrants time to meet and socialise with friends and enjoy the newly landscaped grounds and new planting and irrigation systems recently installed by a dedicated group. I did not see the afternoon drive after lunch, but it was good to see a new format for the Annual Rally, as the number of entrants had dropped off in recent years. It surprised me to hear some complaints that the format had changed as we strive to make events more interesting and challenging for our members. I suggest you read the sign over the entrance as you leave the grounds. If you have suggestions for future rallies, bring them to the Club Captain for consideration. Motorcycle Report
This report is being put together early as the scribe is off to Waitomo for the National Motorcycle Rally, leaving Monday 13 th. Past events. Most of the January events were reported last month, but there was an unofficial Fish and Chip run on 28th January to replace the one that was cancelled in error. About nine or ten bikes turned up for a run to Cheviot and as it was a brilliant day, a good run was had. One certain RE Meteor shat one of its pistons, and by all accounts the owner was very lucky to get a trailer and have it loaded up before some local likely lads, also with a trailer, were about to purloin it… 8
17- 19th February The National Motorcycle Rally, Waitomo. The Canterbury Branch was well represented as one group, The Syndicate, left on the 13th February, returning March 2nd, and 21 riders went. Other Canterbury riders went as well. We will report in April on the Rally. Events in March. 4th March – Moped Run, see Feb Hub for full details. Start and finish PMH, 10.00 am for 10.30am start, back-up provided. Kurt 021 0433707, and Gary 021 0374299 are the contacts. 8th March, Motorcycle Noggin. All are asked to meet at the Bush Inn Pub, in the sports bar which overlooks the BP Service Station on Riccarton Road – NOT the Lone Star on Waimairi Road! Meet at 7.15 pm, then we will be lead to a garage raid close by, leaving Bush Inn about 7.30 pm. 18 – 19th March, Jim Toohey Run; an over-night event to Kaikoura. See February Hub for details, and get your $46 to Jeff Rogers ASAP!! 25th March – Fish and Chip Run. Usual meeting, PMH 10.30 am, but this time going to Ellesmere Vintage Club fund raiser. It is $10 entry, but VCC riders displaying their bikes will get in free.
April events, advance warning… 12th April, Motorcycle Noggin. Again, this will be a meeting at a handy watering hole then departing for a secret destination to view vehicles in various stages of restoration… Think that will do for the moment… Cheers, CML

Commercial Report Thanks to Don and Judy Bennett for hosting the last Noggin, a very enjoyable evening. Next Noggin will be at Dave Inwood's place at 126 South Eyre Road on the 15th March. The Commercial Section of the VCC have been invited to attend the Ellesmere Vintage Fair on the 25th and 26th March 2017 at the Leeston Showgrounds. A short run to the venue has been arranged starting at the Lincoln New World at 9.30 am sharp. All those who wish to attend contact Mark Drury Ph 3429297 to register. Saturday is our preferred day but you can choose which day or even both days. Thanks Mark Drury.

Well we started the New Year with the biggest turnout ever. I believe there were over 60 cars. Tony could not believe his eyes seeing that many cars there when he arrived. A big thank you from me to Daniel Smith for putting in so much effort for us. I am sorry that I wasn’t there. Thank you to Tony too. March 8 Meet at the Peg Carpark, Belfast Hotel at 10am. Grounds Maintenance Team Our grounds team is in need of help. Most of you will appreciate our wonderful grounds which we as a branch get a lot of use out of. The maintenance team meet on the first Sunday of each month to tackle jobs such as lawn mowing, spraying weeds, picking up branches that have fallen and cutting back shrubs etc. From time to time they might carry out a few small building repair jobs. We are in need of some more keen members to join the team and help out with these very important tasks. While we have such large grounds, spread between many hands the jobs required each month are made easy. Most of the jobs are light work, like driving a mower etc, so can be undertaken by anybody. If you have some spare time once a month and want to join a good group of people for some light work, tea and biscuits, then please can you contact Mike Foster, Team Leader 359 8260.

19th Rear Wheel Brake Rally Sunday 5 March 9.00am Meet at Blackheath in Christchurch. Carpark entry is off Wordsworth Street. 10.00am First vehicles depart on the run. 12.30pm Arrive at Waireka Homestead near Homebush. Please bring your own lunch for a picnic in the grounds. If wet we will have lunch nearby and visit the homestead in the afternoon. 2.30pm Depart on the afternoon run. 4.30pm Arrive at Joes Garage at Church corner for an evening meal. There will be time for a drink first. 5.00pm A light meal will be served. A few bottles of wine will be given away and the summer evening will allow plenty of time for vehicles to return home before dark

February 2017 Noggin Display. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the scheduled Rolls Royce display was postponed to a later date. Instead we had MGBs , with 3 motor variants, 4, 6,V8 cylinders, which made a nice display. Many thanks to Ross Butler, for organizing the event and to the following for displaying their vehicles . Are there any members, who are restoring a motorcycle / moped / scooter etc, who are interested in displaying “their restoration in progress�, in the future , maybe, Octobers Noggin? Ground Restoration Can we have half a day of your time on Sunday 19th March? As you will be aware we have planted a significant number of new trees over the past year. Thanks to fertilising the ground first and good irrigation we have had considerable success with most of these trees now double their original size. The issue with fertiliser and water is that it also helps the weeds grow. We have been spraying weeds regularly as well as attacking the areas with weed eaters which has helped keep it under control. Now that the trees have some growth we can now drive between most of them and tackle this job with the branch’s ride on lawn mowers.
Before we can do this we need a working bee to help clear these areas of stones that could damage our mowers. This will be light work with some people racking up stones into piles and others then collecting these with a trailer. Two to three hours of your time will cover a large area and it will only need to be done once. Please can you help us out? Morning tea will be provided.

The Annual Rally 2017 Most rallies start out with” it was a dark and stormy day” No it wasn’t! It was a beautiful hot day for the annual Rally 2017, car top down weather. 71 vehicles were entered 5 Veteran, 27 Vintage Yeah!, 6 Post Vintage. 15 Post War and 18 after 1960. The format was totally different than for any previous rally. You arrived about 9-30 had a leisurely morning tea served by the Motor Cycle Section, did your three field tests, one of which had you perched on the edge of the old tennis court slope and on releasing the handbrake had you rolling towards where you asked for cones to record your hopeful stop. No brakes allowed. Ooops! Failed that one. After that, until one o’clock, you sat in various groups in the shade and had time to enjoy the Island and its wonderful ambiance and, of course, have your lunch. We departed just after 1, on the long route, and 2 ½ hours later arrived at the Doyleston Domain for a late afternoon tea. We saw a few other cars, mainly coming towards us, as various other routes crossed ours. Very few cars seemed to be on the long route. We passed Ruapuna Raceway then back towards the Old West Coast Road, West Melton, Aylesbury Corner, Kirwee, Darfield, Glentunnel, down Downs Road, Sawmill Bend, Dunsandel and towards The Doyleston Domain. We traversed various roads, saw some amazing scenery but gosh there are some very long straight roads that go on forever. The Standard went very well, top down, buffeted by the strong Nor Wester. The evening meal was wonderfully catered for by the Sword Family, thank you. The National Executive were there as well so I bent their ears a little. Leigh presided over the proceedings being helped by Gail and Greg, who organised the rally, and Diane Quarrie helped and also addressed us on behalf of the National Executive. One entrant deserves special mention, Andrea Dallow driving the 1954 Hudson Jet Liner, won so many trophies she will need a trailer to take them all home once they are engraved. Well done that lady. The format of the rally was very different, some people liked it, some were not so sure, but what a chance to enjoy the Island instead of zapping in and out as we usually do. Thanks Gail and Greg Lamb. That has a lot of people thinking. The only down side was we seemed to motor a long time in the afternoon to get to Doyleston but ours was the long route. RSA Waitangi Day Run A great day was held on a very hot day starting at RSA Rangiora. Then to Loburn Domain for lunch and back to the RSA for cold drinks and raffles. North Canterbury Classic Tour. Sunday 19 March, 2017 15th annual North Canterbury Classic Tour is to be held on Sunday 19 March 2017, as a fundraiser for replacement of earthquake wrecked Waiau School community pool. The tour is over sealed back country roads, to lunch at the Waiau Primary School grounds. Open to all vintage, classic, exotic, rare and unique vehicles, saloons, campers, convertibles, utes, trucks, vans and retro campers and caravans. Departs from The Woodlands CafĂŠ, Ashworths Beach Road, Leithfield, North Canterbury. (Corner SH1). Report from 9.15am to 10.30am. $15 per vehicle. (Or more if you wish to donate). Ellesmere Vintage Fair Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 March 10am - 4.00pm Ellesmere A and P Showgrounds $10.00 entry Raising funds for Abbeyfield Ellesmere
On show will be vintage and classic tractors by the hundreds, dating from the early 1900’s, up to present day machines. A popular drawcard will be the forerunners to the tractor, the steam traction engine. We hope to have at least a dozen of these machines in attendance and will put on working displays including threshing and heavy haulage. Veteran, vintage and classic cars and trucks from the local area and further afield will come together at the Leeston Showgrounds, a petrol head’s dream.

FEBRUARY RUN “REDZONE” – INTO THE UNKNOWN
Where no Velosolex’s have ventured before.
Tuesday Feb 14th dawned a fantastic morning apart from the terrible fires on our lovely Port Hills – what a disaster . Nine intrepid “young” VOG members arrived at the start in Patten St all brimming with excitement not knowing what lay ahead for them in this next adventure around the Red Zone of the city’s Eastern Suburbs. As is the case with a lot of roads in the Avonside/Wainoni/Brighton area there are a lot of “Road Closed – Authorised Persons Only” signs that fence off what was once a perfect road. These signs are of no concern to cyclists/pedestrians and VOG members so we were able to head along Locksley Avenue in Dallington with no danger of encountering on coming motorists. All this area is now just a green belt. No houses in sight, hundreds of peoples’ homes gone, wow! We noticed that the Kerrs Reach rowing area has new boat sheds and club rooms so that is something positive for all the budding rowing Olympiads. After that it was onto New Brighton Road, to follow the Avon River around until we came to South Brighton Domain. VOG 1 remembers the hall that used to be there, where during the mid 1960’s there was a great Saturday night dance venue known as “Surf City”. Some fantastic bands played there, belting out surfing music, Beach Boys style, that used to be the flavour of the day back then. At the back of this Domain is a great cycling track that takes you along the waterfront. We almost needed 4 wheel drive mode once again to tackle this rocky road, but all made it safely out onto Caspian St where Lyall Hurst (VOG 3) told us that he knew of another track that went off Rockinghorse Rd down Heron St, what a discovery this was – such fun!

We had to navigate through grassy tracks, wire fences, concrete kerbing and potholes galore. A great experience that finally led us back out onto Rockinghorse Rd at the Spit end. A cruisy ride back down Rockinghorse Road eventually led us onto Marine Parade and right into the eye of a gusty nor’wester. Whew that slowed us up immensely, so it was a rather slow trek down here all the way to New Brighton where we stopped for refreshments and some tucker at the New Brighton WMC. After the lunch break it was back up Hawke St to the Pages Rd round about and back onto New Brighton Rd. We then turned off at the Avondale Bridge and right into Avonside Drive (that was) – another Road Closed sign here, but there is still a sealed road of sorts following the Avon River – wow that sure runs high now, or is it that the road has sunk!!
A non eventful ride eventually returned us to Patten St and our transport. Plenty of smiles on the “Young Lads” faces so I guess all enjoyed the adventure. Royce (VOG 1)

P GROUP RALLY 2017 Sunday 2rd April
Assemble at Cutler Park at 9.00am. We will have one field trail here before 10am Coffee and departure. Concours will be judged at Cutler Park. Could the cars entered for this please be there at 9.00 sharp. This year the one rally route has a mixture of hills and good shingle roads. The last part with the shingle will have a diversion for those wanting to take the tar-seal main road.
