The black-and-white period image of the two-lever Model T shown on page 35 of Beaded Wheels 392 is part of a much larger photo. That photo (found by Lynda Rogers in Wairarapa and now held by The Colonial Motor Company) is very revealing. In its original form (shown in the book) the photo shows six cars - two Model Rs, two Model Ss and two Model Ts – one being that two-lever demonstrator, and the other being Mr Booth’s left-hand drive, single-lever car. We now even know when the photo was taken: the cars had gathered at Hughan’s Garage (the Wairarapa Ford agent) on their way to the Rouse and Hurrell (NZ Ford distributor) display at the Carterton A&P Show, late October, 1909 – a
full year after Model T production had commenced and proving that Model T sales were pretty slow to start here. I have cropped the photo to show the two Model Ts – both left-hand drive – one being the two-lever car and the other Mr Booth’s single-lever. (That is him sitting behind the wheel.) In late January I had the pleasure of taking part in the National Motorcycle Rally which was organised by the Manawatu Branch and based in Palmerston North. This branch has only a small number of motorcyclists, yet they still managed to put on a great rally for the participants. The weather on the rally day was brilliant and although a few spots of rain during the field tests on Sunday dampened things a little, everything got done. The catering arrangements were amazing, and everyone was fed and watered each night very efficiently. I am told the “after rally tour”, with Palmerston North as the hub while the bikes went out daily for a ride and returned back to base nightly, was very successful and enjoyed by the almost 100 entrants who took this option. The branch has great clubrooms which are rurally situated, and they have a large, grassed area which the

I have been riding motorcycles ever since I started work and at no time have I ever been without a bike or two (or more!) in the garage. When I joined the VCC in Dunedin in about 1975ish it was the motorcycle section that I was involved with. Probably because I couldn’t afford a car old enough to rally in. I had old cars, for example I had a 1929 Chrysler 66 in 1964, but they were for daily driving and most were not club eligible then. Over my 65-odd years of riding, I’ve had the occasional “unscheduled dismount.” Not too often, and usually without too much damage—well, mostly. One memorable moment was on my freshly restored Norton Atlas, with my (then) young and fearless wife, Shona, riding pillion. We hit a loose gravel road, and let’s just say, things got a

little… sideways. In hindsight, I might have been a tad overenthusiastic. Anyway, we ended up sliding down the road. The good news was that Shona ended up under the bike which helped protect it from damage on the gravel. I was sort of sat on top of the bike so had no worries at all. We had suffered no injuries so picked the bike up and continued on our way, albeit with some “slight” reluctance from Shona to re-mount. I did express my gratitude to her for her consideration and help in protecting the bike. She doesn’t ride pillion any more! She does have her motorcycle licence and is a good rider and has done most of her riding on a 1948 Matchless 500 single, a Puch 250, a Honda Pop 75cc and a Honda XL175. Shona emphasises her motorcycling days are over now. Following on from the National Motorcycle Rally, Shona and I did a bit of touring around the North Island in

our motorhome for a few weeks and it so happened that we were in Napier for the Art Deco weekend. I had never been to the Art Deco before, so this was a great opportunity to take in the sights and sounds of the big parade on the Saturday. Cars everywhere, people everywhere, and period clothing to satisfy every taste. Napier really turns it on for this weekend, with shops open, street performers showing off their skills and all those wonderful cars are parked on the streets following the parade so we could give them a jolly good looking at! And yes ….. In case you were wondering …. Still married to the long-suffering and lovely Shona.
