MID WEEK RUN SEPTEMBER 13TH – RIDING THE COACH TRAIL IN TE PUKE Organisers: Barry and Jenny Utting Meeting place: Trevelyan’s Packhouse and Coolstore Complex 3kms up No 1 Road, Te Puke, on the right. To get there, you’ll need to drive through Te Puke town, down the hill and turn right at the top of the next hill – approx. 500m. Time: 9:15am. We are to take our own morning tea as usual but have it in the canteen at the packhouse. Drive in the Main Entrance, bear right and follow the arrows to the parking area where someone will show us where to park. While we sup and munch, Rachel and others will give us a talk about the packhouse – where it’s come from and what it does and maybe a video. Then we take a tour in two groups around four different areas– a packing shed, a coolstore, the engineer’s shed and the recycling area. It is important that you have comfortable, covered-toe shoes and leave your jewellery and watches in your car. They will give us hair (and beard) nets to put on and Hi-Viz jackets. From there we cruise along Old Coach Road and visit a kiwifruit orchard on the way back to Te Puke for lunch at Molly’s Restaurant.

Welfare Notes by Linda Downey Regarding the health and welfare of our club members, I haven't been advised of anyone who is sick or is in hospital since our last meeting. Although this sounds a wonderful thing, that everyone is fit and well, I would hope that this truly is the case. However, for those members who are still in recovery from illness, or are about to undergo surgery, on behalf of their VCC friends, I'd like to send them our best wishes. Chairman’s Chat by John Redding
Well another month has come and is about to be gone. Time really is moving very fast for me and it has been a very busy month for some on the Committee, Ken Frew, Linda Downey and Kaaren and others organised the end of month run raising $700 for the Cancer Society, plus the club helped out delivering daffodils to businesses around town earlier in the week. It was impressive to see 70 odd cars take part in the end of month run. In fact I have never seen that number of cars at our club before so I congratulate you all for supporting this worthy fundraiser. Once again I am called upon to organise this end of month run and I shall do. However if there is anyone out there interested, who would like to help out in next years end of month runs please contact me. Do not forget the swap meet, and the woman's navigation run and lots of exciting activities just around the corner as summer draws near.
Hopefully I will see you all at club night and we will have a nice friendly chat, but that is all for now. Look after yourselves, John

Competition: By Kaaren Smylie Club Captain “Competition has been shown to be useful up to a certain point and no further, but cooperation, which is the thing we must strive for today, begins where competition leaves off” – Franklin D. Roosevelt You may be asking yourself why at our age I am alluding to competition - how does it go, “been there done that”, and “I gave away all that silly nonsense when I retired at 65 to lead the good life”. Well, I can safely say that a little competition has proven to be good for the soul, as long as its ‘healthy competition’ and to be sure that we drive the right behaviours and optimism for the desired outcome. COMPETITION - And speaking of competition; last week I sent an email out to my fellow Club Captains and all our VCC members in the North Island asking them to set their branches a challenge. The challenge was to see if the North Island branches (all 22 of them) could outdo the South Island branches with the monies raised for the inaugural VCC National Day. Well, we all know how successful our run was, what a fabulous day we had with 70 cars turning up at the club rooms to take part in this National Event. Again another big thank you, Ken & Linda, from all our members and their family and friends who participated in the great day you planned for us, including our out of town VCC members from the Wellington and Manawatu branches who were visiting the Bay for the weekend! It’s going to be wonderful if annually we do have a VCC national event, which perhaps another nominated charity could be the benefactor. Food for thought for the powers that be. FUNDS RAISED - Our Branch did extremely well, considering our event clashed with the Americas Cup homecoming for Peter Burling that was set down at the same time. We collected $700 for the Cancer Society and $630 for the Oropi Community Village for the lovely afternoon tea they provided to our members. Watch this space for the results around the country when we get them, from what the various branches received/raised in donations. I am adamant the ‘mileage' nationally the VCC will gain from an event of this magnitude will be tremendous. From its associated publicity, we are sure to get enquiries from the public now who will want to find out how to join our exciting organisation. A BIT MORE COMPETITION - BONNEVILLE – In my monthly read, last week I read in the Granny Herald’s ‘Driven’ magazine about the Bonneville Speed Week held recently, and that the ‘darling’ of the entrants was a 1948 Austin A40 Devon panel van. The Austin was entered in the Classic Gas Altered class (limiting engine sizes to between 1524 and 2015cc). This van is powered by a 1970s-era Nissan L20 four cylinder engine, with a displacement of just under 2.0-litres. For the record, it ran to a respectable average top speed of 171.60km/h zoom zoom! DRIVERLESS CARS - In the same magazine, I read an article on driverless cars. Hmm not sure what your thoughts are if one of these driverless machines should pass you out there on one of your rallies, but it sure scares the ‘pants off me’ I tell you. It’s all happening this December when self-driving cars will begin taking test laps on the site of a famous World War II aircraft factory in Michigan, which produced B-24 Liberator bombers at the rate of one an hour more than seven decades ago...fascinating.

Driverless cars - some without steering wheels, accelerators or brake pedals will race at speeds of up to 110km/h around a 4km loop that includes a triple-decker overpass, a 210m tunnel and a decommissioned federal tunnel. The test track, known as the American Centre for Mobility, is under construction on the grounds of the former Willow Run factory that was a critical cog in the US arms industry during World War II. The facility in Ypsilanti, Michigan, is one of 10 test beds around the country the US has designated as official sites for validation driverless technology. Should the intrepid travellers the Goldsmith’s, Stafford’s or the Smylie’s have the opportunity to get close enough to anything as interesting as this, we will report back to you. AGM - Blenheim - my notes - additionally, to the notes John & Jim made at the AGM in Blenheim I wrote feverishly as well, here are a few brief points that may interest you: THE NOTICE OF MOTIONS Notice of Motion NUMBER ONE – "To remove the proposer and seconder from the application form." FOR – 1102 AGAINST – 539 RESULT – Failed Notice of Motion NUMBER TWO – "To rename the three categories of vehicles." FOR – 355 AGAINST – 1636 RESULT – Failed THE WINTER WOOLLIES WANDER - In July the Wellsford/Warkworth branch had their annual Winter Woollies Wander, and 71 vehicles entered. I am pleased to report back Raewyn & Graeme Fenn BOP members won the event, well done you two! ONLINE MEMBERSHIP: David Yorke, a member of the Executive, gave two very informative presentations to delegates. On-Line Membership – there are changes required before an online membership application form can be executed; however, this new type of implementation is currently work in progress. THE FUTURE OF INTERNATIONAL RALLIES: David, with the help of others, undertook an intensive survey of the most popular annual motoring events around the country as a follow up from in-depth discussions about the viability of having international rallies, and what is required to encourage VCC members to enter. The well-supported events that did stand out from this report were a) Taranaki’s Americana b) Whangamata’s Beach Hop and c) Napier’s Art Deco One of the most obvious things that were highlighted, was all these events are only run over 4-5 days and involve convoys, displays and parades, and most importantly all have a permanent home. A subcommittee was established at the meeting to consider the format and frequency of future national and international events, and to decide whether or not ten-day rallies are feasible or cost effective anymore for the average club member to attend. JOHN L GODDARD TROPHY - The John L. Goddard Trophy this year was awarded to the Beaded Wheels Committee, which between them have given 100 years of voluntary serviced to the VCC. EASTER RALLY - Next year the National North Island Easter Rally will be based in Cambridge.

LADIES LUNCHEON - Ladies, please make a note in your busy diaries that our next ladies luncheon is coming up on Wednesday 6th September. Our ‘Host’ and ‘Hostess’ with the Mostess will be Linda Downey & Doug Brown. Our hosts also extend the invitation to our menfolk (See advert) CLUB CAPTAINS RUN – Another date to make a note of ladies November Sunday 26th I am going to have my annual Club Captains Run, titled ‘Best Lady Navigators Run’. This particular day will be a special one just for you, and I have in the planning stage some little delights you will enjoy.

Hi Folks!
“Boy the Club is jumping.” The members have to be applauded for their efforts on the delivery of daffodils in Tauranga on the 22nd August. The turnout for the Sunday Cancer run had people and vehicles coming out of the woodwork. Both Ken Frew and Linda Downey carried out the tricky task of organising this event. Deemed a success from the start (final figures will be announced in due course.) At the request of Bethlehem Views in Cambridge Road, both Jim Smylie, Craig Williams and I provided some entertainment for their residents and staff. Some of you will remember our old friend Wallace (Wally) Brownlee with the 38 Chev. Wally received some special attention as well. The ‘Queens’ rode in Craig’s Bentley and the very important people in the old AA truck. I hope it made their day. Paul was gob smacked at the number of members who turned up on Friday night to see the movie “Dam Busters.” “What a great movie.” Remember summer is just around the corner and it’s time to reflect on what is important in your life.

All articles must be in writing and received PREFERABLY early in the month, the close off date being Wednesday following the committee meeting. Hi All, This month can quite easily be called Daffodil Month, I feel. The club once again responded to the call for drivers to deliver daffodils for the Cancer Society and what a great cause. Cancer affects many people in so many ways and yet after all these years research still has not found a cure for it. It appears at the moment that the cure is worse than the disease which is where the Cancer Society fits in. What a great cause to support. August was busy for me and I am glad to have it behind me. I have had quite a problem this month with SPAM emails and seemingly no way to be able to deal with them. Hours have been spent on the phone with Spark trying to resolve the issues and it appears at last I may be winning. I would suddenly receive a whole lot of spam saying I had won money etc. so either I am the luckiest person on the planet or it was a lot of nonsense. On some days receiving up to 20 emails all telling me I had won !!!!!!!!!. So a lot of rule changing was necessary to take care of them all. I now have so many rules applying to my mail I will be lucky if I receive any normal mail. Hopefully now I am now on top of everything and can get on with life instead of trying to deal with some idiot that wants to destroy me. A couple of weeks ago Joe our secretary was placing magazines from other clubs in the slots and stated that only 3 or 4 hardcopies are received now. By that I drew the conclusion that most other clubs are now sending their mags by email or websites. Well done to all involved. The savings to your clubs are enormous and also reduce wastage. “Emails have won” and are the way to go. While reading the latest issue of the Federation of Motoring news an item drew my attention that, the average failure rates for vehicle Wof. was 36-38%. The largest failure rate being the lights on a vehicle. What I am concerned about though, is, each issuer is vulnerable to audit if their failure rate is less than the industry standard. This to me rings alarm bells as our older vehicles probably are an obvious target if the issuer is not keeping up his rate. Surely a vehicle is safe or is not. A cut and dried issue. Not it passes but my rate is low so will fail it this time to keep up my standard. Lets see who picks this up in the higher up dept. and runs with it. See the latest FOMC. magazine on our cloud site. Also there is a discussion about Classic versus Vintage name for the VCC. I have overheard discussion at times about the small number of VCC members taking up the Far North Fuels option for fuels discount available. Little wonder on that issue. In reading another clubs magazine NPD fuels discount (South Island based only) will give a 15cent discount for a Gold Card and the Motor Home association (Far North Fuels covering all NZ) receive I believe 12cents discount. So 11cent discount for the VCC (which is also available to all Gold Card holders anyway) really is not attractive enough I feel. As there are many of the VCC members belonging to the Motor Homes assoc. they are covered anyway for 12cpl. discount. I do wonder how many other options are available though and how they compare. So while winter is slowly being replaced by spring, I will sign off by saying. “Summer and Christmas are just around the corner”. “YAY”!!!

The Years 1934 and 1935 1934: The Royal New Zealand Airforce is formed but still administered by the Army. It became a separate Reflections branch of our defence force in 1937. 1934: Charles Kingsford Smith made his 3rd crossing from Australia arriving in New Plymouth taking 13 hrs 25min. 1934: The NZ Manufacturers Federation is incorporated, and Todd Motor Industries began assembling Chrysler and Rootes vehicles at its new plant at Petone. 1934: Fletcher Construction began building Wellington Railway Station 1935: New Zealand’s first regular airmail service begins in Westland and gradually extended to main centres throughout the country. Wellington’s Rongotai airport opens and was first used by a new schedule to Blenheim and Nelson. 2 years later the service was extended to Hokitika. 1935: Newman's and Hawkes Bay Motor Co. (which began in 1908) merged providing a bus service between Wellington to Hastings. 1935: Tribute was paid by a railway enthusiast in support of the new K class locomotive stating no one can fail to pay tribute while gazing at the superb embodiment of throbbing power and the NZ brains and labour which have achieved its design and construction. 1935: A Canterbury farmer is believed to have been the first New Zealander to use pneumatic tyres on his tractor.

Daffodil Delivery by Paul Beck Time flies fast they say. With the last deliveries being still fresh in our minds Yvonne and I set out to repeat the task again. There is no doubt that someone has been very active before us involved in the selling and putting the lists together. What a task. We did a run around the commercial areas of the Mount and were amazed at all the little nooks and crannies some business’s are set up in, but it does make you wonder how they survive. No signs or numbers on display made locating them all quite difficult. Many times even having to ask someone who happened to be outside if they knew of the whereabouts of ???. So it was amazing how they were found in the first place to buy the flowers. However we seemed to get it all done in good time and we just hoped that the sun shining in on the flowers while in the back of the car did not affect them too much. 31 cars were involved from our club each delivering about 30 bunches each. However as others were involved as well I did hear about 1400 bunches were delivered in total so a huge task overall. Well done to everybody involved and in particular to our Kaaren Smylie for having everything so well organised and even for somehow having her photo dedicated to the majority of the Sun newspaper front page.

August Chocolate Run

Ohiwa Harbour makes a beautiful backdrop
A sunny day and 26 cars motored to Ohope to the Scilla Homemade Chocolate Factory on Harbour Road. As Debbie gave us an enlightening and enthusiastic talk on how, when and why her boutique craft came about samples were passed around for us to try. Delicious dark chocolate, milk chocolate and white chocolate made with a variety of delectable flavours or just plain sure set the palate alight. These traditional Belgium chocolates have quite a sharp brittle click when bitten into – the sign of being perfectly made! Then on to the “mini factory� to learn how these chocolates are made weekly for sale in their florist/choc shop in Whakatane or to orders around NZ.

Beautifully presented chocolates in tins, boxes and bags were available for sale and I saw plenty of happy folks swinging bags of goodies back to the cars. I wonder if those little bags made it home untouched?!
On to the Whakatane Fishing Club right on the river edge for a lunch and what a superb menu to choose from with fish, of course, the favourite dish of the day. Thank you to Alan Pram for organising this trip AND the weather. Well done.
End of month run: Daffodil Day 2017 by Donn White A pleasing total of 73 cars assembled at the VCC clubrooms on Sunday August 27 for a charity rally in support of the Cancer Society. The great turnout meant that even before the Daffodil Rally started at 1.00pm $730.00 was instantly raised for a very worthy cause. A number of vehicles not regularly seen on BOP VCC runs were in evidence and this added to a very interesting sight as an eclectic cross section of vehicles made their way up Cameron Road on the first leg of the rally. The route took the crews up to the end of Cameron Road where they turned left at State Highway 29 and made their way to the Poike Road roundabout to turn right and link onto Ohauiti Road. Impending bad weather meant that the normally great views from this region were tarnished somewhat and the light rain started just as the vehicles arrived at the refurbished Oropi Hall and Community Centre. The locals were very pleased to see us and put on a great afternoon tea. We were informed that the old hall had recently been refurbished at a cost of 1.7 million dollars and that our well received monies for the refreshments totaling $640.00 would be put to good use with other schemes planned for the facility. After a half hour stop over the rain was beginning to fall quite steadily in the Oropi region. Travelling back to Tauranga the rain abated somewhat but then the weather deteriorated once more when we reached the clubrooms and it stayed like that for the next couple of days. A big thanks to rally organizer Ken Frew who will now be focusing on his next big BOP VCC event the Annual Vintage Car Club Swap Meet and Car Show scheduled for Sunday November 12. Ken was ably assisted with the charity run by Linda Downey plus Jim and Kaaren Smylie who generously came to the fore with various house keeping matters. Judging by facebook posts a number of other VCC branches staged similar successful fundraising runs at the same time and it was interesting to see that a run staged in South Canterbury raised over $1500.00

Car Debut this month This month we have a 1968 Morris Traveller. After a long search Alastair and Gwen Jones are absolutely delighted to have been able to purchase this gorgeous wagon and able to motor it on this months daffodil rally. Alastair says the car was brought out to NZ from Canada and was previously owned by a guy who worked for Avro Aircraft Co, manufacturing the Lancaster Bomber that became famous during the WW2. Production ran from: 1948 to 1972. First fitted with a 1000cc engine then later fitted with 1100 cc after 1962. 48 hp 4 cylinder OHV engine. 0 to 60mph in 24.8sec. 38mpg Drum brakes on all wheels. Claimed by factory specs top speed 77mph. Cars were manufactured by Morris then shipped to the MG factory to have the wood body fitted.

Has seal conditioners to stop or reduce leaks and anti wear additives. I have used this in my Triumphs for the past 14 years and have found that it works to reduce leaks and sticks to the rockers etc. when the vehicle is not being used. $59 for 5 litres. Valvoline Duragear 75W-85 Gear Oil GL4 semi synthetic. (GL4 oils have less sulphur and are getting harder to find) GL4 oils are specified for most classic cars that have bronze or brass synchro rings and thrust washers etc. This oil helps synchro rings grip, improves gear changes and won't wont affect brass or bronze parts. Model A OWNERS if you have a Laycock overdrive fitted - this is the oil for you as they have some brass and bronze parts in them and the Triumph 2000/2500 Factory Workshop manual specifies an EP70 oil on draining and refilling a manual gearbox and overdrive. $56 for 4 litres.
