Mid Week Run 10th October: Organiser Alastair Jones The October Mid-Week Run on Wednesday 17th October will be taking you to a Galaxy Far Far Away when we visit the Te Awamutu Space Centre. It is a free run from Tauranga to TIRAU where you should plan to arrive by 10.00am for Morning Tea at a cafe of your choice. The briefing and hand-over of flight instructions will be close to the "Dog Sculpture" at 10.30am, followed by a run through interesting roads to TE AWAMUTU where you can have lunch at a cafe of your choice. We will meet at the Space Centre at 1.00pm. Details of location will be in the flight instructions. There is an Entry Fee of $10 p/p, however we may be able to get a discount for a big group. End of Month Run 28th October The Annual Best Lady Navigators Run (Girls are in charge) DATE: Sunday 28 October. TIME: arrive at the club rooms at 3.30pm for the briefing and a quick drink before departing on the run at 4pm. ABOUT THE RUN: The run will be set by Ron & Kerry Elton and trust me it promises to be full of fun with obstacles to challenge your grey matter. You will start at the club rooms and finish back at the club rooms for the spot prizes, trophy presentation and dinner. DINNER: By the time you get back 'Master-chef Jim' will have the BBQ's cranked up with an early dinner for you, that will be served at 5.30pm COST: $10 p.p. for a meal, followed by trumpets for dessert! TROPHY: Our proud trophy winner for 2017 was Raewyn Fenn. Chairperson’s Chat
In my chat this month I wish to discuss several pending events, and also a major milestone for our club; the election of Ken Frew as vice chairperson.
Firstly, our end of month run this month, which is this Sunday, is a combined run with the Waikato branch members. Details have been sent to you by Kaaren in her BUZZ but if for any reason you have not received those details please give me a call.
This run involves visits to three different sheds, starting with the Waikato members calling at Dick Marshall’s shed/s at Morrinsville. You may recall we visited Dick’s place some months ago with Alastair and Gwen. We will then join our Waikato friends and then two other sheds, one at Waihi Beach and the other at Katikati, finishing at Doug and Linda Brown’s place for afternoon tea. The weather promises to be fine and this will be a fun filled day with plenty of experiences for all. Don’t miss it!!
Secondly, our guest speaker for October is Murray Toms, a well know club member, who will discuss his adventures with historic motoring. Murray has a great story, or should I say stories, to tell, including his trip across the USA in an early model Dodge tourer which he purchased in the East and the drove all the way to LA. This vehicle was 1914 vintage, and hardly missed a beat.
Murray’s talk will take the form of an interview with our great presenter, Alastair Jones, asking numerous questions of Murray. This promises to be a great night – not to be missed.
Finally, I wish to talk about the election of our first vice chairperson. For some reason our constitution did not allow for such a position, which was an anomaly. To remedy this we held a special general meeting in August where we resolved to amend the constitution. Then last month we held an election, and I am very pleased that Ken Frew was elected to fill that position. Ken is a very capable person as evidenced by his co-ordinating our last swap-meet, and more recently our most successful Daffodil Day.
I welcome Ken in his new position, and should he eventuate to be our next Chairperson, the club would be in excellent hands.

The Different Types of Runs/Rallies & other things to whet your appetite… by Kaaren Smylie No longer are women thought of as the ‘fairer sex.’ We had our Prime Minister Jacinda Adern, taking centre stage recently at the UN General Assembly in the land of ‘Trump’, swiftly becoming hot property with speaking engagements on nationwide television. From all walks of life, in politics to philanthropy, women are making their mark and holding their own with the opposite sex. Please keep reading, because this month’s column isn’t about me banging my ‘sexist’ drum, but instead taking the opportunity to acknowledge our lady members, and there are many of you in our own branch and nationwide which is wonderful.
The month of October is the ‘pink’ month in the calendar year (Breast Cancer Awareness Month) when nationally we recognise all our dear womenfolk who are/have been touched in one way or another with this rampant disease! The VCC embrace our women, and this month our club will be having our annual ‘Best Lady Navigators Run’ on Sunday 28th October. This is definitely not compulsory but it would be great to have a gold coin donation from each driver on this run to donate to the local branch of the Cancer Society. Girls, remember this is your rally, when you get carte blanche (absolute freedom of action) to instruct those fellas of yours where to go and what to do and guess what…they can’t say a ‘dickie bird’ lol lap it up while you can. Ron and Kerry Elton once again kindly agreed to set the run, and this time the Elton’s have set the Run to be even more challenging than last year, to enable the winner of the Run to be able to take home the magnificent trophy that will be awarded. Because we are now into daylight saving mode, I made the decision we will start the run later in the day and make it a ‘semi’ twilight run, starting at the club rooms and ending up at the club rooms for a BBQ and a wee tipple. It’s your day girls so at the briefing you will be offered a complimentary small glass of bubbles, or a fruit juice just to set you on your way. (See advert in this Klaxon) Ladies and Gents, I think you will enjoy a superb run coming up the following month, which will be our end of month run for November. Five branches of the VCC; BOP, EBOP, South Waikato, Rotorua and Taupo will be combining on Sunday 18thNovember for a grand run set by the Chairman of the Rotorua branch Dave Tomlinson, details of this run will be in the ‘BUZZ’ closer to the time and in the November Klaxon. Since our last monthly meeting, I have posted on the Club notice board details of my North Island Club Captains Tour happening 7th – 13thMarch 2019. When Jim and I mapped out the route to take people on, we were cognizant of the importance of encompassing as many VCC Branches as we could to visit, and for this tour to have some appeal to the ladies. So, girls, there will be things happening that you will enjoy. All six stopovers on route will have the input of either the Club Captain or the Chairperson of the branches which is great. Dare I say members as you know, runs and rallies don't happen without someone initially putting up their hand to say I will organise this event. And that is exactly what happened during the program for our 60th birthday

weekend in August. The idea of a bit of motoring with lots of conviviality was high on the agenda for that particular weekend, but as time went on the thought of unpredictable August weather made finding a suitable venue highly unlikely. That is, until a remark made by members Sandy Piercy and Paul Lett sometime previously, that they were keen to host a ‘Rooster Run’ finishing at their property, this comment created the ‘Light Bulb’ moment for the organizers and solved the problem.
It is always the unknown when you organise a Run/Rally as to how many are going to turn up on the day whether it’s the weather or one’s ailing health, for a lot of our members now it’s become… just take one day at a time.
We all have experienced the same as Sandy and Paul did, they never envisaged just how many people would put their name down for the Brunch Run, and how many BBQ’s they would need to line up when they made that offer, but the morning turned out to be a memorable success. Thank you once again, Sandy and Paul, because it’s people like you two that make rallies and runs possible and fun!

Great marketing and promotion for our club goes to Ken Frew our organizer and Vice Chairman, and an extra pat on the back Ken because out of 36 VCC Branches, we were the only branch that got a full page article, go the Bay of Plenty!
VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED PLEASE: Time is looming and we are coming up fast to our biggest club fundraiser of the year our ‘Annual Car Show & Swap Meet’ on Sunday 4 November.
Our convener of this event Ken Frew is looking for volunteers please to help out on the Sunday. Even if you can only give a couple of hours any help would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Ken on 5764263 I would also love a few ladies to be able to spare a couple of hours to help out in two-hour shifts in the kitchen. Doing shorter stints doesn’t make it so arduous on the same people, and gives those ladies that start at 6 am in the morning a break. None of us are getting any younger and it’s a hard slog standing on your feet all day. As in past years you all know our club has public popularity with the home baking we sell for morning tea and lunch, ladies could I impose on you again please to whip up a plate of your best cookies or savouries to sell, our kitchen girls would be most appreciative. So if you can be of any assistance please call Ken or miwah, we are very keen to hear from you. A couple of days after the Swap Meet the Smylies have organised with your committee in agreement, a new event to celebrate, the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday

6thNovember. Haha don’t worry we haven’t ‘gone to the dogs’ with our ideas, but as you know sometimes you have to think outside the square a bit, which is exactly what I have tried to do this time. The plan is for members and their friends to dress up in their fancy threads and model their ‘Best Fashion in the Field’. I have organised the judge to be an outsider not a club member, to nominate the best dressed lady and man. After the judging and the prizes have been awarded, Paul Beck will ‘beam us up' at 5pm to Melbourne to watch the big race. After the race Jim is going to put on a BBQ for the hungry punters. More details will be in the ‘BUZZ’. Many, many members of our branch and other branches have asked me personally when the BOP branch is going to have another annual event like we used to do at Auckland Anniversary weekend. As you were all aware the appetite for that particular event dwindled, and entry numbers were down at the last one we ran, so a decision was made at the time to can it. Recently I have been approached by four of our very experienced rally members offering their assistance to plot and set up an annual ‘Two Day Rally’ for our club, and plan to launch it in September 2019. The emphasis is on a fun rally, competitive but not stupid, to try and encourage younger folk to take part. There will be some straight lining, questions, and some photos to match up, and maybe a little timing section. Another request from several members is one club night we have a teaching/ refresher session on ‘Rally Rules and Interpretations,’ the committee have given this the green light so this will take place in early 2019. In closing this month, going from influential women to an article I read recently in ‘Natural News’ which caught my eye, about electric cars titled “Tesla car owners suddenly discover the NIGHTMARE of trying to get repairs for a vehicle out of warranty”: Apparently, the very first Tesla fans, who pre-ordered their own Tesla Model S in 2013, are now running into big problems with the company. As the warranty expires on their vehicles, Tesla owners are suddenly discovering they can't get aftermarket parts or repairs. Because there is a widespread lack of service centers that deal with these contentious models, Tesla owners have been forced to fix their own cars. To make matters worse, as soon as the warranty expires, the company treats its customers ‘like they don't own a Tesla'. A Model S owner attests to this as he thought gas-powered vehicles were a thing of the past. Just a few years later, as cheap parts began to break off his Tesla, he realized that not many mechanics want to work on these vehicles, because their durability is something to be ashamed of. Parts are hard to come by unless a scrap Model S can be salvaged, and some mechanics have to use 3-D printers to recreate parts. Oh, the joys of modern motoring folks how reassuring to know we don’t have to be concerned with all of this palaver when it comes to our good old trustworthy Historic Vehicles.

Hi Everyone, This being the October magazine has brought the message home that by the time everyone receives this it will only be eleven weeks and just two more Klaxons before Christmas. It only seems a few weeks ago I was getting the last Christmas Klaxon out. While our winter has been quite mild this year I do look forward to the summer warmth and longer days.
They say things come in threes. So when last month I reported that after our 60th party I immediately came down with a cold and also my internet packed a sad at the same time I did wonder if there was to be a 3rd. Little did I know that it was lying waiting for me nor what form it was to be. We attended the club’s mid week run to Katikati and this was the first start up since before the 60th for the Snipe. On arrival at Kati it was apparent something was quite wrong so decided to call it a day and get back home as I had a bad feeling about it. By the time we arrived home it was running very rough and to cut the story short am now waiting for parts to reassemble the cylinder head to get going again. That’s the 3rd thing gone now so all should be good from here on for a while. Fingers and everything else crossed. Two events coming up in the future will keep us busy here in the Beck household. The first is our swap meet. Ken seems to have things well under control and it looks like weather permitting we should have another great event. Yvonne has been busy collecting the excess library books for the club stand. While we don’t make a large contribution to the swap meet coffers we have to work very hard for what we do get. But it is a fun day and we do enjoy the day. Then straight after the swap meet we will be holding a Melbourne Cup event. The format for that looks like it might be an entertaining night. So slot a space so you can attend. Of course the race will be on our Big Screen. So Woo hoo!!! Saddle up, leap aboard and go like hell. Sounds like the Smylie's are laying out an interesting programme. We have just received the resignation from the club of Clive and Maureen Gardner and while many of our newer members would not know them, they both have been very active members in the past. Maureen in particular was secretary for the Anniversary Weekend events held in our earlier years. She was always very organized and everything went like clockwork when she was around. Maureen was also Treasurer in 2003. Thank you Clive and Maureen For all you have done. Sadly though, reality is setting in for many of our more elderly members. Many now do not have cars or if they have are unable to drive or maintain them. And as we progress, many of us have become aware that costs are rising annually so club fees must rise. With the end result it is no longer possible to carry on. Sad but true. It is a fact we all must face. From here on as many of our members face this dilemma we will be facing a decline in membership. All we can do about this is keep trying to encourage new members and make it a club that people want to join and enjoy. It has been a good ride till now but let’s make it better. All for now, Paul

Report: September Mid Week Run to Katikati by Jan Burt About 27 cars assembled at the Haiku Park in Katikati which started with morning tea and some hot scones made by Joy de Lautour. First on the agenda was a walk to the new bridge and on the way the Haiku verses on the stones were read. We then travelled to Peter and Jane Lawns place where everyone admired Peter’s workshop and the steam traction engine that he had built. After much talk and questions we then moved on to view some very small miniature houses and the detail of them left much to be admired. People were asking each other “did you see this or did you see that” and many questions were asked as the display was so varied and all to scale. With many rooms to view there is no doubt that ‘Ereas’ is a very clever lady. Our lunch stop was at the Light House Café, which was on the way back toward Tauranga, with a great variety of food. The friendly staff did a great job making sure that everyone had received their order even if we did have to wait a while. Thank you to Gideon and Peter for a good day and also thank you Joy for the lovely scones.

Book Review by Paul Beck
Trek

A story so unbelievable that anyone would try such a venture. In 1955 a group of four British adventurers set out to drive from Nairobi to London in an 8 HP Morris Traveller under the leadership of Alan Cooper who was a down on his luck farmer. He was joined by a field biologist who recorded the whole trip on her 8mm camera, a young school mistress in search of romance and a 17 year old boy whose mother thought the trip would make a man of him.
The journey took them through an Africa that was under revolt against British rule and the days of Colonial rule were ending however as things turned out it was the blazing sands of the Sahara Desert that was the undoing of their great adventure. The trip soon became a nightmare for them all and the battle for survival overtook all their dreams. Do they make it? Did the Morrie Traveller get them to their destination? You will need to read the book to find out. This book was donated by Jack Anderson is available in our club library. Paul

The Years 1977 - 1979 by Paul Beck 1977: Changes to the right hand rule gets motorists labelling it as a stupid law. The new law requires traffic to give Reflections way to traffic proceeding straight through or approaching from the right. 1978: The Kaimai tunnel was opened after taking 13 years to construct. It is 9km long and is New Zealand’s longest tunnel. 1978: NAC and Air New Zealand merge and become one company Air New Zealand. 1979: It is now compulsory to wear seatbelts in all seats in new cars. 1979: Oil prices rise by 88% this year. 1979: Air New Zealand suffers its greatest air disaster when a DC - 10 crashed on Mount Erebus. 20 crew and 237 passengers died and the crash became the subject of a Government Commission of enquiry in 1980. 1979: Carless days were introduced where each motorist was required to nominate a day when they would not use their car. This was a measure which was supposed to save fuel due to the sudden increase in oil prices. It was unsuccessful however and was dropped in 1980. 1979: The Government due to the prices of a barrel of oil rising from US$13.00 to US$32 began a study of think big projects which included building a methanol plant and a Syn-fuel Plant at Motunui. This was later proved to be uneconomic.
