Mid week run 14th November - Organizer Alan Pram This run (my last) will take the form of two shed visits and a picnic. The sheds belong to two prominent members and contain a lot of interest. The first shed is to Stephen and Janice Belcher at 6 Bristol Avenue and certainly does the Wolseley very proud, while Janice will have something of interest for the ladies. The second visit is to Ken and Kathleen Walker at 60 Myers Street. Ken has cars dating back to his childhood including a pedal car. Weather permitting this will also be the venue for our picnic. Ken has made available a barbecue for those who require. The setting is superb and the view is terrific. There is plenty of off road parking so all we need is a fine day. So bring your picnic lunch and picnic tables and enjoy. Meet at the Club 9am and have a quick cuppa then be ready for a 9.30am departure. Route instructions will be given out before leaving. WHERE THAT IS: Holden’s Bay – on the east side of Lake Rotorua, about 2-3 km north of the Rotorua Branch clubrooms PARKING: Parking on the grass. There is also a vacant property to the right of the drive way with a small brown batch on it and we can use that large lawn to park on. WHAT TO BRING: we will have a BYO picnic lunch in the Museum grounds around 1pm. Please bring your own picnic chairs and table etc. Rotorua VCC will provide complimentary tea and coffee at the venue. If the weather is bad the lunch venue may be transferred to the VCC clubrooms. WHAT IS HAPPENING ON THE RUN: there is a guided tour through the interest facilities, and the steam engines will be working for our group on the day.
COST: entry to Museum will cost $10pp to a maximum of $20 per vehicle if cars have more than two people on board. There will be plenty of parking on site. Chairperson’s Chat
November 2018
What a great day we had last Sunday at the “Ladies Navigator” run organized by our great Club Captain, Kaaren.
It has been sometime since we had a competitive run, with our recent runs being more of a social type, driving often to a special venue, rather than the run itself being the event. However, Sunday showed us there is appetite in the Club for more challenging events, and your committee will take this onboard as it organizes events in 2019. My congratulations to Marion Carlson, who was the overall winner on the day.
Just as important was the attendance at our BBQ following the run. Apart from the excellent BBQ’s provided by Sandy Piercy and Paul Lett at their home at Te Puke, it has been many years since we have had a BBQ at the Club Rooms following an event. On the day we had 84 members and friends sit down for the meal, an indication that again BBQ’s are enjoyed by our members.
We will certainly have more BBQ’s in the near future, starting with one at our Melbourne Cup night on the 6th. We look forward to a big turn out on the night. We will have the race showing on our big screen, organized by Paul Beck, and will also have a small sweepstake running, so the event should be great fun.
On another note; as I sit here writing this Chat my office is bathed in sunshine. This is two days out from our biggest fundraiser for the year; our Swap Meet.
The many organizers of this year’s Swap Meet, lead by Ken Frew, to whom I sincerely thank, have put in a tremendous amount of work putting this event together. I do trust we will have a great turnout on the day not only of our members and visitors but of our wonderful historic vehicles that the public love to see. So please make every effort to bring your vehicle along. The event will be held rain hail or sunshine. Hopefully we will have the latter.

‘Bittersweet Moments’
Club Captain Kaaren Smylie
I write this on the Eve of the funeral of one of our very delightful members, Kenneth Miller. Our thoughts are with Mary and we look forward to seeing her at our future club events behind the wheel of the red Triumph that she and Ken enjoyed together so much. In all our active lives we have sad moments, and joyful moments, or just plain old bittersweet moments, and members I would like to believe you will all have a great deal of fun in the coming month ahead with the many different events we have on offer– the club calendar is jam-packed with plenty of good motoring adventures of one kind or another! It will all begin this coming weekend on Sunday 4thNovember. Fingers crossed a higher power is looking after us people when it comes to the weather for our annual Swap Meet, our biggest fundraiser of the year. As you are all aware a great deal of time and energy goes on behind the scenes into the preparation of this event by our hard-working members, to make the day a roaring success and it would be a shame if we got rained upon. I am really praying for a fine day as I invited the boys from the Model ‘T’ Club to transport their autos over the Kaimais so we can have them on display at our Swap Meet for the public to view. It’s not that often ‘Joe Citizen’ gets the opportunity to see a good collection of Veterans. Two days after the Swap Meet is the big race day, yep, that race day that captures the nation up and down the country. Whether you are a ‘punter’ or not with all the marketing around the day most of us get caught up in the fever one way or another…(dare I say as much as our Auzzie mates across the ditch do), when the annual Melbourne Cup is run. Members I decided we could try something a bit different at the clubrooms this year, and have a bit of excitement ourselves to celebrate the Cup. This is the plan, we will open the club rooms at 3pm, and between 3.30pm – 4pm there will be a competition for the Best Dressed Lady and the Best Dressed Man. This competition will be judged by our Deputy Mayor Kelvin Clout’s wife, the very vivacious Kathryn Clout. Winners of the competitions will be announced by Kathryn at 4pm. So folks please come dressed in your best threads for the occasion. Ladies, this is a good opportunity to brush the dust off your millinery and come along sporting your finest bonnet to compliment your outfit. I would like to add, credit goes to Paul who has gone to a huge amount of trouble to get us wired for sound to get coverage of the Cup, that will be shown live on our big screen. The main Race of the day is at 5pm, and prior to this Race, we will run a couple of sweepstakes to get everyone into the swing of things.

At the conclusion of the Race after all the punting, the old tummies will want to be fed, so Jim will fire up another one of those great BBQ’s to satisfy you like he did for our Ladies Run recently. Please bring along your own refreshments to enjoy while you are having a little punt. Fun times will be happening at Cliff Road on Melbourne Cup Day. (see advert) On Saturday 10thNovember the ‘Circa’ ladies are back again at our club rooms from 9 am – 3pm to have their Vintage & Retro Spring Fair. I don’t know about you, but I can’t stop myself indulging a little each time their market is on at our club rooms and purchasing some little number for Art Deco (which remember folks is coming up soon ) or a beauty homeware. I must add all the items on sale are very reasonably priced and in excellent condition. Sunday 18thNovember is the VCC Branches Combined Run and our Club’s End of Month Run for November (PLEASE NOTE a week earlier than normal). I believe this Run is going to be a great day out for members from Rotorua, Taupo, Eastern Bay of Plenty, South Waikato and Bay of Plenty branches who are combining to meet up at the Te Amorangi Steam Museum to not only enjoy the Museum tour and see the steam machinery operating, (including their large steam engine), but the camaraderie with other VCC members over a cuppa and a bite to eat. Should the weather be really bad Plan B is to travel to the Rotorua VCC club rooms for lunch. (see advert and keep an eye on the weekly BUZZ)
Tuesday 20thNovember another event of difference –this time to celebrate the year of 2018. And whether it's been good, bad, ugly or just plain bittersweet for you I have a little something up my sleeve for the girls (and the boys). ‘Boobs, Bubbles and other Girly Things’; this is evening of surprises for the girls that will be held at our Club rooms starting at 7pm and concluding about 9pm.
Gentlemen, so you don’t feel left out, and for those of you that are keen, at the same time your ladies are occupied, Jim has something organized for you as well. (see advert) Speaking of difference, our last movie night of the year until March 2019 will be on the 30thNovember. Paul has planned to run a double-feature that night…a very cool idea indeed! (see advert) Moving on to Tuesday 4thDecember, our Seniors Morning Tea, convenor John Payne has sorted the annual Christmas morning tea. There will be good eats on offer and a little bit of light entertainment to amuse you for a short while whilst you have your morning tea, and John is mindful to factor in enough time for you to have a catch-up and a chin-wag as well.
Thursday 6thDecember is the date for our ladies Christmas luncheon. This time around I will be your hostess, I am planning to have a bus adventure out of town for the day to include Christmas shopping, lunch out and other things on route that will appeal to the ladies. (further details will be in the BUZZ)

Sunday 9thDecember will be the annual Club Christmas BBQ Dinner and Restoration Awards. The club rooms will be open at 3.30pm for BYO drinks and nibbles, followed at 5.30pm our BBQ dinner and the judge's announcement of the Awards. Any members that have been restoring their autos over the past twelve months please bring them along for the judging…hmm not sure if I will have my ‘Spittie’ mobile by then, I may have to plan to enter in 2019. For further details of the Restoration Awards please get in touch with Jim.
The following Sunday 16thDecember committee member and our Welfare Officer Linda Downey (aka Montosorri teacher) and I have the children/grandchildren of our members in mind when we have our annual Children’s Christmas Party. Linda has a great little afternoon programme of activities lined up to amuse all the kids under 12 years of age. At 3pm the Big Fella in the red suit will be arriving at Cliff Road armed with sweets and goodies for all the kids, and at 5pm the Club will have a BBQ dinner for the ‘oldies’, the more the merrier. If you aren't coming to the children's party get into the Christmas spirit and come at 5pm for the BBQ. Circle this date in your calendar now or add it to your electronic diary.

Hi Everyone, Another month and another Klaxon closer to Christmas. Rather than measure the number of weeks to the big day, it is far easier to think in terms of how many more magazines to go, after this - just one! This month sees us all fairly busy with the Swap Meet and Melbourne cup on top of our normal meeting night, film night and club runs. So buckle up all of you and hang on. I have just received a phone call from our Dave Ryan who has made the momentous decision to resign from our club. He no longer owns a car and very rarely attends any events now. Dave has been a long standing member of our club and over the last few years has been the creator of the Crossword in our magazine. Many will miss his contribution I am sure as it is one of the first things some do when Klaxon arrives. I myself will also miss his monthly friendly visit when he drops in his crossword and reminiscing of times gone by. Sad to see you resign Dave however I am sure you have many great memories of times gone by. You will be missed at the club. Unfortunately many of our members are in Dave's position and as time rolls on will also face a similar decision. As many members are no longer motoring their old cars or do not own one now, the expense of belonging to an organization is becoming a burden to them and as costs of our membership also need to increase it makes the burden even heavier to bear. Sad but true. It is a fact we all must face. From here on as many of our members face this dilemma, we will be facing a decline in membership. All we can do about this is keep trying to encourage new members and make it a club that people want to join and enjoy. It has been a good ride till now but let’s make it better. Sadly this month is also the last mid-week run Alan Pram will organize. I don’t know how long he has been doing this task for but we all have benefitted from his efforts. I am sure he has created a very popular event and that someone will carry on with the task. Thank you for a job well done Alan. What a Bonus this month when we attended the mid week run to Te Awamutu Space Centre organized by Alastair Jones and Chris Railton. First you had to wonder what to expect when we are told the designation was a Space Centre but the true icing on the cake was the drive there. Perfectly timed for a fabulous display of Cherry Blossom in full bloom on the way. Someone has obviously spent a lot of time and money planting the side of the road with flowering cherry. Hundreds of them. Nearly 2 km. Then not to be outdone we were taken through an area of huge boulders - all over the place. A real landscapers dream. What a display of the power of mother nature to just plant these giants all over the landscape. It would take some very large machinery to shift many of them. Then on to the Space Centre to view a great interactive display and an inside look at Nasa and its complex program of building and maintaining a space station. Who would believe this sort of thing placed in the tiny town of Kihikihi. A very interesting day it was. Finally a small reminder that as from January, if you require Klaxon in printed form we must receive your contribution (see advert) to pay for it. For those receiving Klaxon on line only it is very easy to print off the EVENTS PAGES AND RUN INSTRUCTIONS without printing the whole magazine. This will make a big saving of your printing costs. While many members do know how to do this, the instruction is for those that do not

Report: Waikato/Bay of Plenty Shed Raid, Sunday 30 September by Theo de Leeuw Waikato Branch VCC Fine weather started the day in the right vain for what I was hoping will be another great shed raid tour. First stop, Dick & Marianne Marshall’s Morrinsville property. We viewed one of the bigger collections of 1940s, 50s with a touch of 60s cars in the region. With the exception of the Mk6 Bentley (being worked on) all appeared “ready to roll” which I guess means there are some good discussions about “which car today”? This collection included convertible Morris Minor, Triumph Stag to Daimler Dart, convertible Ford Fairlane to various T-Birds, Pontiac and ’58 Impala Coupe. Whilst at this stop, many took interest in the wonderful collection of orchids. Initial turnout at Morrinsville was close to 20 member’s cars and bikes all ready to make the journey through the Karangahaka Gorge to Waihi Beach where Bay of Plenty VCC members were gathering. This was at the workshop of Craig & Nicki Marshall to view 2 Lea-Francis’ (one being the 14 litre speedster), boat-tail Chrysler 77 amongst other cars and collectables. The total group grew to about 65 cars and over 100 people. At this stop, we also saw a 15 minute video of Craig & Nicki’s 2012 Peking to Paris adventure completed in a 1937 Dodge coupe. Interestingly their only issue on that tour was a bent valve… sounded like one of those “must do” trips. Following Waihi Beach, next stop was lunch break at Trevor & Nicola Gordon’s at Katikati. As many members will know Trevor restores cars for other members, one being a 3rd Lea-Francis for Craig Marshall…a smaller car at only 9 litres. Another being owned by VCC North Island Club Captain Kaaren Smylie’s Triumph Spitfire, one that she has owned for a very long time…I might be giving too much info away about Kaaren if I tell you how long she has owed this car, it’s a long time! BOP member Robert Oswald, bought a number of his cars to Trevor’s for viewing as well. These included the beautiful convertible Chevy Bel Air and a couple of stunning 1930s Woodies. Last stop; the Avocado Pack House owned by Doug Brown. Here Doug gave an interested rundown of growing Avocados but also provided a cup of tea. Also it was an opportunity to view Doug’s Model A’s and to view the sorting-pack house for his avocado business. Afternoon tea came with some very nice tasting guacamole; a very enjoyable stop. Looking at the numbers of people that congregated for this trip from both clubs, as co-organiser with Jim Smylie this was another successful event. There was something through the day for everyone, with vehicles from 1914/15 through to the 1990s, great gardens to wonder around and a spectacular view toward Mt Maunganui for the afternoon stop. A great collection of cars and people turned out for a marvellous days touring, fantastic to see. Hopefully there are more joint events between these two neighbouring clubs. October Mid Week Run to the Te Awamutu Space Centre by Stephen Ward Around 20 cars attended this event organized by Alastair Jones, on a fine but chilly day for a run over to Te Awamutu (actually the Space Centre is in Kihikihi). Starting at Tirau to receive our instructions we headed off into back roads of the Waikato behind Cambridge, nice roads too. As Denise wasn’t feeling too good, I was head chef and bottlewasher so following someone else was a good move, especially as it was the organizer (‘nuff said). Lunch was either at Te Awamutu or a cafe in Kihikihi. The Space Centre is right in town sharing facilities with a church and their hall. The church (pews and all) was where manager David Owen took us through the solar system using a slide show presentation and the planets and galaxies (and much more) were explained to us. David obviously has a love for the subject. We then went into the church hall which was decked out in all manner of things ‘space’, from pictures of all the astronauts, history of astronomy, telescopes, books, a live feed from the real space station, facts and figures, etc. etc. One item I found fascinating was the size of our sun, if you take the volume of the sun and add in all the planets, the proportion of the sun’s volume is 99.8% of the total. So much stuff, several hours are required to take it all in. The Space Centre is open most days but it is advised to check first. Report for Ladies Navigator run held 28th October by Paul Beck Congratulations must surely go to Kaaren for a well organized event. Right down to the tiniest of details. A well laid out and competitive route drawn by Ron and Kerry Elton had many including ourselves backtracking to correct mistakes. But then it was supposed to be a competition, not just a route to follow, and while many grumbled because of mistakes made, that is what competitions are about and what produces a winner. The event attracted 29 entrants, a good turnout with the ladies provided with a glass of bubbles to get them all primed and ready to go. The drivers of course were denied a glass and rightly so. The starter Alastair Jones got everyone away at one minute intervals and we were the final car away. Around the block we went and the first mistake made. So around again to sort out where we went wrong and time to cool down. Off downtown and we headed out towards Welcome Bay. Up to Ohauiti and down through Rowesdale to Oropi. Many of the competitors had not been in that area before so it was an experience to them also. Eventually the route led down Fraser Street to return to home. My opinion the run was well laid, enough to provide a competitive element and scenic enough to provide interest without traveling long distances. While many will disagree, I can only say that's competition and to everyone to look forward to the next one so you can improve on the last one. Jim I am sure had been watching Master Chef on TV and as promised had a BBQ underway on return. Enough for 84 people, and not a burnt offering in sight so well done both Jim and your assistant Paul Van Den Hoven. Another of your talents exposed. Prizes were then distributed with the overall Trophy going to Marion Carlson and runners up to Yvonne Beck, Jan Burt and Marie Hart. A great day and thank you to all the prize donors involved ensuring every competitor went home with something. Also thanks to those in the kitchen and doing other chores as well. Paul Beck

The Alexandra Blossom Festival - by Dave and Val Stafford On a recent trip to our farm in Gore, we took the opportunity to participate in the annual Alexandra Blossom Festival Rally which is run by the Central Otago VCC, This rally on the 22nd of September is preceded by the annual Alexandra Blossom Festival and Parade. The event has been running since 1957 and celebrates the arrival of spring. The parade features floats, historic cars, vintage tractors, pipe bands and in recent years large trucks. the festival lasts for a week with all sorts of activities and music and is very popular with people from all around the south. Getting back to the rally we travelled up to Alex from Gore with three Gore VCC cars, two Triumphs and two Mustangs ours included. The rally started in Alex and we headed out through Galloway and up into the Crawford hills through Moa Creek and Poolburn to the Ida Valley. then crossed over into the Manuherikia Valley and Becks via a dirt road through private property only accessible to cars when dry, as it is most of the time. The drive to Becks afforded lots of magnificent views out over valleys to distant mountains with peaks still wrapped in blankets of snow. The historic Becks Hotel was a great place to stop for a refreshment and a chat with fellow rallyers and to peruse or perhaps purchase an item from the second hand emporium in the hotel. From Becks we headed back towards the Central Otago VCC rooms in Cromwell passing through Lauder, Omakau and stopping in the historic little town of Ophir. Ophir was the original main Central Otago town until it was bypassed by the Central Otago railway (now the Central Otago Rail Trail) in favour of Omakau. Like a lot of old towns along Route 66 in the USA that were bypassed by the interstate freeways, Ophir became a ghost town. But in recent years has undergone a renaissance and has become a popular place to live with a historic and quaint air to the town and several old original buildings including the original 1886 Post and Telegraph Office (still operating) the jail, courthouse and a lovely restored old store providing accommodation and meals. With a nice dry climate, if a little on the cool side at times (with a -21 C to its name) and visitors from the rail trail not far away they are looking at developing a new sub division, as there is nothing available for purchase. Could spend more time there, but back on the road again and 1km out of town is the lovely old historic Ophir suspension bridge built in 1880.Then we passed through Chatto Creek, Clyde and finished the rally in Cromwell. We checked into our shared motel then back to the club rooms for a cuppa and prize giving that we didn't manage to crack, leaving that to some friends from Gore. Then it was down to the Victoria Arms Hotel in the historic part of Cromwell for a lovely dinner and interesting Quiz night. A most enjoyable rally with great scenery, roads and good company for the 35 cars that took part David and Val Stafford

My equipment goes to the Junkman. He has had his eye on it for several years. I want 6 of my creditors for Pall Bearers. They have carried me so far they may as well finish the job Places I Have Been I have been in many places in my old car but I’ve never been in Cahoots. Apparently, you can’t go alone. You have to be in Cahoots with someone. I’ve also never been in Cognito. I hear no one recognises you there. I have, however, been in Sane. They don’t have an airport; you have to be driven there. I have made several trips there, thanks to my friends, family and work. I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and I’m not too much on physical activity anymore. I have also been in Doubt. That is a sad place to go, and I try not to visit there too often. I’ve been in Flexible, but only when it was very important to stand firm. Sometimes I’m in Capable, and I go there more often as I’m getting older. One of my favourite places to be is in Suspense! It really gets the adrenalin flowing and pumps up the old heart! At my age I need all the stimuli I can get! And, sometimes I think I am in Vincible but life shows me I am not! I have been in Deepshit many times. The older I get, the easier it is to get there. The Years 1980 - 1986 by Paul Beck 1980: The car-less days introduced in 1979 scheme finished this year. The scheme was introduced during the oil shock Reflections price rises in an attempt to to help NZ’s declining economy. Each owner was required to nominate a day when they would not use their car. This was displayed by having a different coloured sticker displayed on the windscreen. 1980: Also saw the speed restriction lowered from 100km per hour to 80km per hour and restricted the hours that petrol stations could serve petrol. 1981: Air New Zealand takes delivery of the first of its 5 Boeing 747’s intended to replace the DC10’s 1981: The movie Goodbye Pork Pie became one of the most successful of all local films in this year. 1982: HMNZS Wellington arrives having been purchased from the Royal Navy and also saw the retirement of HMNZS Taranaki 1982: The New Zealand Railway is forced to 10% reduction in track length after sustaining heavy financial losses and competition. 1982: Work begins on the construction of a synthetic petrol plant at Motunui in Taranaki. It is planned to supply 1/3rd of the country’s petrol requirements 1986: Deregulation spreads to vehicle testing where the Ministry of transport held a monopoly 1986: The supersonic airliner the Concorde landed in NZ for the first time.
