Mid week run 15th March: Organiser Alan Pram This is to be an outdoor run. Make your own way to assemble at the Fish and Game Trout Hatchery on Paradise Valley Road, Ngongotaha at approx. 10am. Bring a picnic lunch which we will have on the grounds. Covered tables and toilets are available . Plenty of parking and lots to see. We then will leave the hatchery about 1.15pm and backtrack 500 metres to visit Wingspan in time for a 2pm show. The Wingspan visit will cost $20.00 pp if you are a pensioner or $25.00 if not. There will be a couple of committee members from our Club who will be there to assist you with the parking of your car EVENT DETAILS: The Greerton Village in conjunction with the BOP Vintage Car Club is for the first time having a Vintage & Retro Fair to raise funds for the Greerton Village School. The event will include Vintage and Retro cars, stalls selling all things vintage and retro, food drink and musicians to keep everyone entertained playing retro music in the Rotunda. The top half of Chadwick Road will be closed off to traffic for the public to view the cars. The public are encouraged to dress up in Vintage or Retro theme, prizes will be awarded. There will be plenty of activities for the kids – pony rides, bouncy castles, etc and street entertainers will be roaming the streets of Greerton Village

Chairman’s Chat, by Jim Smylie Several days ago I was privileged to meet a young Chinese lady; the girl-friend of a young distant cousin. Soree had an interesting back-ground; one that I had certainly never discussed with anyone. Soree was born during the “one-child” policy era in China. The difficult part was her parents had already had a child, so Soree was illegal. Whilst her mother was pregnant with Soree she had to go into hiding as if she was found to be pregnant with a second child she would have been forced to have an abortion. Soree also told me if she was discovered in the early months of her life it is likely she would have been murdered. What a frightening experience for a young mother and father to have to go through. Then, when Soree’s parents eventually came clean, her father was fined the equivalent of four years’ salary for an average Chinese worker. An enormous burden for what I understand was a not particularly well off family, and a young man that had not worked for some months whilst in hiding. It appears that once the fine was paid Soree was accepted by the government and more importantly by the community. Soree said she had a good upbringing, and an excellent education. Certainly when I met her she presented as a well-adjusted very pleasant young lady. During my time with Soree I gave her a ride in our Model A, which she really enjoyed, particularly riding in the “Dicky Seat”, something she had never seen before. Soree told me that she had never seen an old car in China, and that where she lived, Shanghai, all the vehicles appeared very modern. Whilst many people in China are very poor, with a population of 1.4-5 billion people if just a small percentage are affluent it means many millions of wealthy people, and accordingly motor vehicles. Soree told me that where she lived, there were teaming millions of vehicles on the road with multi-level motorways, similar to those in LA to cope, with the large fleet. Listening to Soree’s story made me appreciate just how lucky we are to be living in New Zealand, with its freedoms, and relative affluence, and how fortunate we are to have the wonderful and largely open roads in the Bay of Plenty to drive our precious vintage and classic vehicles. On another note, it was interesting to receive the statistics from head office regarding club membership. Currently with 401 members we are the third largest branch in the country, and by a significant margin. These figures also told us our branch grew by 175 members in the last seventeen years. This growth is shown in the numbers attending our meetings. Last month we had almost a sell out crowd, which is great to see. This large membership is also reflected in attendance at the various activities the Club runs, which always makes them more interesting. Incidentally, should any of you wish to see the country wide membership statistics, or any other information please let me know and I will do my best to see you receive it. Prior to the next meeting I will have attended on your behalf the national executive meeting, hence the updated membership list. I always find these meetings interesting, and rather sad that this will be the last such meeting I attend as your Chairman. Wishing you safe and happy motoring. Jim

“Time Waits for No Man”

So true, so true...I just don’t know where the last four weeks have gone, as it’s that time again when you will be receiving your new Klaxon for another month. I have just counted nine events on offer for the Club in the month of March, you can’t say we sit on our hands and watch time go by; instead we are out there, taking the bull by the horns and having fun and adventures in our automobiles, busily checking our diaries for the next week’s events to attend. Any member who wishes to get my weekly reminder emails and is not already receiving them please let me know, as well if any member does not want to receive the updates, please send me an email to ‘unsubscribe’ and I will take your name off the email list. As well as email reminders, remember you can always refer to our Club website, Bryce is continually updating the information on it, you have your ‘Klaxon bible’ (as many members refer to it as) and of course the BOP VCC Facebook page, so many resources now available to keep you up with the programme. Another little push for the Greerton Village School event… don’t forget next Saturday 11th March the Greerton Village is running in conjunction with our Club their inaugural Vintage & Retro Fair to raise funds for the School, and our Club along - with several other car clubs in the district, will be out in force supporting them with their autos parked up for public viewing. To date I have received incredible interest from our club members and other car clubs wanting to be involved in the day’s activities. If you don’t already have your name down as a keen participant, and would like more information please get in touch with me now. It would be great to see if this inaugural Vintage & Retro Fair could become an annual event for Tauranga, and the event grow into our own Art Deco weekend - similar to what little ol’ Napier has. It’s unbelievable how over the years Art Deco has gone from strength to strength, and just keeps getting bigger and better every Art Deco, consequently the Bay heaves with tourists who come from far and wide to join into the weeks festivities, and of course supporting the Bay’s economy, a win-win situation for everyone involved! So don’t pack away your Art Deco threads for another year just yet, trot them out again next weekend and come along dressed to kill. Don’t forget the auto as well that can go on show for public viewing. In the last couple of days, I have posted out a pile of invites for the annual New Members & Nominators Evening to all the numerous new people who have joined the Club since our last New Members function twelve months ago. Remember this evening on 15 thMarch is not just for new members and their nominators, but for ALL our members and supporters of vintage and classic vehicles. A brilliant opportunity and reason to mix and mingle, and be informed and updated on the activities in our vibrant and go ahead Club!

Chris Cole - your host and presenter for the evening and your committee, have a great night planned for you Here’s a case of ‘time waits for no man’…With the advent of electric cars. Has anyone spotted to date yet one of the eight Tesla Model S cars that were delivered two weeks ago in Auckland? The eight cars handed over were among the first to be ordered when Tesla began taking online orders in New Zealand late last year. The company co-founded by Elon Musk also announced it would open the first New Zealand retail store and service centre in 501 Karangahape Road later this year. I read with interest in the NZ Herald an article that said the first Supercharger point is in Hamilton, and is capable of recharging a top-of-the-range Tesla Model S with a range of more than 600km within half an hour. The model S sports sedan was the world’s best-selling plug for electric cars in 2015 and 2016, and sells here for between $117,000 and almost $300,000 depending on specifications. Further charging points are planned before the end of the year in Turangi and Sanson, with additional Supercharger stations being opened in Auckland and the South Island in the future. Our youngest grandchildren may not ever learn to drive a car themselves; maybe that program ‘Beyond 2000’ is coming into fruition finally?? So not only are we car enthusiasts but a charitable bunch of people as well, every week several of our members volunteer to give up their time to go out to Waipuna Hospice to wash the nurses’ cars, and we know Hospice really appreciate any community assistance they can get. In a couple of weeks, a group of members from our Club have volunteered to give two hours of their time to the Hospice to take a few patients who are well enough, in their vintage or classic cars for a short country excursion, followed by a morning tea. Last year one of the volunteers was our forever joke cracking Secretary Joe Scott. Joe offered to take Anne a patient for the outing in his Model A truck. Well they had a superb morning out together with Joe keeping her entertained for the two hours with his funny humor; however it was only when it came to homeward bound that Joe experienced a ‘whoops’ moment and the trusty old ‘A’ gave up the ghost. Anne had a great sense of humor and saw the funny side to everything and breaking down and not quite making it back to Hospice she said just made her week; she loved every minute of the adventure! Sadly Anne a dear friend to Jim and I passed away a few months later, but her jaunt out in the Model A truck was added to her bucket list of fun things she did in her last few months.

Secretary’s report by Joe Scott Hi Folks! You still have time to get a sun tan before winter kicks in!! For those members who had the opportunity to hear our last guest speaker Pat Buckley (subject on drug abuse,) it was a very profound and hard hitting talk. Pat told an amazing story that included his own life experiences and the decision to turn his life around and help other victims. I take my hat off to people like that. A great turnout to Harbourside Macadamias Orchard on our mid-week run, which saw a good turnout of new members along with their cars, was a very welcome sight. The Ladies Luncheon held at Jan & Owen Smith’s home proved to be a very pleasant day. The sun was shining and the views from their home were magnificent. A couple of our new members even turned up on their motor scooters. As we left to go home Owen gave everyone a pot of honey produced from his own beehive. Jill and I are looking forward to attending the Greerton Vintage & Retro Fair on Saturday 11th of March. “We will take the truck.” The children love the windup hoist. To all you members out there that do not have a hoist come anyway I’m sure you have a lot to offer. See you there at 8.30am. “That’s all Folks” Joe Scott

All articles must be in writing and received PREFERABLY early in the month, the close off date being Wednesday following the committee meeting. Hi all, At long last I can see and eat properly. I seem to have had an endless succession of appointments getting a cataract removed and a tooth replaced. The later has taken 15 months from start to finish. No wonder people don’t want to go to the dentist. It has become so specialized now with each person involved having first an inspection and x-ray then an appointment to undertake the specialist task required and then to recheck and move on to the next person. To me it seems a lot of nonsense and cost however the result at the end I must say is very pleasing. (to me anyway). During that time I also got a cataract removed. No mucking around there. Chop, chop, done. The result being, throw the glasses away (almost anyway, however I do need them for reading small type) Very good and very happy. My computer course is underway now with a small class of 8 being as many as can be handled with the facilities I have available. It is quite a challenge dealing with the different programs and the levels of expertise. A couple of the class have seen what can be done and have spent a little money getting their programs updated so they can continue. I think that is really great. The enthusiasm is there and their computers are being found to not be a scary thing after all. If I haven't scared them off by now the chances are they will all see the end as the fun bits are now coming. It is also encouraging to me to have achieved this result so far. Long may it continue. I am a little concerned at the lack of articles for the Klaxon. Almost as though the club is asleep. Perhaps maybe, too much of a good thing. Or maybe it is only the time of the year. If you have anything of interest (other than smutty jokes that is) please send them in. I would love to hear about some of your cars in particular. Stories of how you obtained it, what restoration has been done and at what level of completion at the moment. Maybe even a major repair can be a story. Our film nights are starting up again this month (see the advert for what’s on) I am looking forward to them myself and hope we can manage a good selection of must see again classic titles. Come along and enjoy!! Jim announced at the last meeting that the committee has decided to replace the clubroom chairs. Very good I say. Many of the chairs have come from odd collections in the district and while they may have served well, it is long past time to retire them. I only hope the committee have selected well and that the hall users respect them a little better than in the past. Finally, our club library is normally open on Monday mornings other than holidays. However from time to time Yvonne and myself have an emergency or other things to attend to and cannot make it. If you are coming specially in to the clubrooms please make sure we are going to be there by contacting us first. DO NOT JUST TURN UP and expect us to be there. Our contact is on the cover of Klaxon. A reminder to our run organizers. Please get someone to write a report for the Klaxon. We all like to read about past events but if nobody sends anything in we do not know what happened. I am very pleased to report that we are an A1 Healthy VCC Branch - at least I think we must be as I have never heard anything to the contrary, so.... keep up the good work.. but, IF you should hear of anybody who is unwell please let me know and I will send them a few "kind words" hopefully to give a little cheer.. Something to be thankful for - by Susan Weld. A group of Seniors were sitting around talking about their ailments. “My arms have got so weak I can hardly lift this cup of coffee,” said one. “Yes I know,” said another. “My cataracts are so bad I can hardly see my coffee.” “I couldn’t even mark an X at election time because my hands are so crippled,” volunteered a third. “What? Speak up! What? I can’t hear you,” said one elderly
lady. “I can’t turn my head because of the arthritis in my neck,” said another, to which several nodded weakly in agreement. “My blood pressure pills make me so dizzy,” exclaimed another. “I forget where I am and where I am going,” said another. “I guess that’s the price we pay for getting old,” winced an old man as he slowly shook his head. The others nodded in agreement. “Well count your blessings,” said a woman cheerfully. “Thank goodness we can all still drive.”

February Mid week run to Daniels Orchard—by John Carroll

The owner pointing out how production has improved over the years
The weather was perfect for a drive to Matahui Rd. the home of Harbour side Macadamia Orchard where we were given a very interesting talk on the production of Macadamia nuts by the owner who has owned the orchard for some 35 years. Over the years they have developed the orchard keeping it as environmentally sustainable as possible and without the use of chemical sprays. The trees have been carefully selected and are not genetically modified. The nuts are only harvested off the ground to ensure maximum flavour and are husked and dried immediately after the harvest in small batches at a time. The moist air from drying is not recirculated back into the drier during the cycle. Once the kernels are dry they are then bagged in nitrogen fresh packs and stored refrigerated until required. The secondary processing is only done just before the sale and may involve smoking or covering in honey etc. for different flavours. Oil is also extracted and involves cold pressing. No heating is used. Macadamias are a native of Australia and not very common in NZ and with the amazing amount of time and effort that goes into producing the final product no wonder they command a good price. Sitting among the trees was a beautiful setting for the talk and a cuppa. 30 cars turned out which was excellent. At the conclusion of the talk we proceeded to the Golf Club for lunch and a good chat. All in all, a nice finish to a really good morning.

Report on the end of the month run: by Jenni Hoven 15 cars met at Wairoa to start the run to Aongatete Forestry Research restoration site. There are 100 traps set around the perimeter of the bush trapping rats, stoats, weasels, ferrets and possums. The pests introduced by early settlers have killed so many native birds but now volunteers and hobby trampers attend to removing the dead pests and resetting the traps. This is an alternative to the poison 10/80 which can pollute the water ways. It is an ongoing work but there is evidence that the bird population has increased and bird calls are heard once more. Barbara and her teams are keen for the government to realise this and to put more into trapping pests. I think we all thought that this should be done as New Zealand was a bird paradise before the pests were brought here and I agree with our chairman that a donation from the club should go to this cause. Club members are perhaps too "mature " to offer physical help but we could suggest to any younger friends that they might join in as Danielle has done. Most people walked up to the forest and through it to hear the birds before we went to the Forta Lisa for absolutely delicious food. The years 1920, 1921, 1922

1920: A National air board is set up to control civil aviation in this country. There are only 2 airports in the country being Kohimarama, Auckland (for seaplanes) and Sockburn, ChristReflections church (later called Wigram). Meanwhile aviators make the first crossing of Cook Strait, and the first flight over the summit of Mount Cook.
1921: The first flight is made between Auckland and Wellington by George Bolt in a Supermarine flying boat. The flight required stops at Kawhia and Wanganui and the plane was in the air for 5 hours 6 minutes. 1921: New Zealand's first motor assembly plant is built in Wellington by the Colonial Motor Company. 1922: The Main Highways Board is established to control road building and maintenance. Other items of interest within these years The economy starts to falter as New Zealand approaches the Great Depression. The Kiwi emerges as a national symbol. The Department of Railways established a factory at Frankton to prefabricate houses for the railways workers. They produced over 1500 homes before it discontinued in 1929. Professor Robert Jack of Otago University broadcasted the first radio programme to be heard in new Zealand. Auckland population exceeded Wellington by 50,000 at158,000 people.

Four Kiwis and a Falcon by David Harford The idea of driving a car around the world entered David Harford’s mind, but it was not until he met an attractive Australian girl that the dream started becoming a reality. Had they known then the complications and mishaps that lay ahead, a sea passage to England would have been more sensible. Travelling with two other companions they start the obstacle course in Singapore. From there travelling westwards through steaming jungles, high Himalayan valleys and bleak subzero temperatures. The story builds to a climax in South America where the quartet strive against time to see as much of the continent as possible and which their tiring Falcon Station Wagon named Robin will allow. The car struggles on against high altitudes and overloading to such an extent, that the rear wheel rims keep splitting, and rear wheel bearings being a constant problem, but valiantly claws its way through mud and sand with very few problems considering the abuse. In many cases the 2 guys were left to sort out the car while the 2 girls walked on and quite often used their charm returning with some sort of help to assist in their predicament. Humorous at times and unbelievable at others the team somehow make the allotted time to meet their ship to return to NZ. A light and easy read, and sometimes hard to put down in the middle of an adventure. This book is available in the club library. Happy reading, Paul

Has seal conditioners to stop or reduce leaks and anti wear additives. I have used this in my Triumphs for the past 14 years and have found that it works to reduce leaks and sticks to the rockers etc. when the vehicle is not being used. $65 for 5 litres. Valvoline Duragear 75W-85 Gear Oil GL4 semi synthetic. (GL4 oils have less sulphur and are getting harder to find) GL4 oils are specified for most classic cars that have bronze or brass synchro rings and thrust washers etc. This oil helps synchro rings grip, improves gear changes and won't wont affect brass or bronze parts. Model A OWNERS if you have a Laycock overdrive fitted - this is the oil for you as they have some brass and bronze parts in them and the Triumph 2000/2500 Factory Workshop manual specifies an EP70 oil on draining and refilling a manual gearbox and overdrive. $56 for 4 litres.
