Chairman’s Chat Yippee. The council have voted no to a museum! It is great the council voted seven to four against considering the building of a museum in the Long Term Plan at its meeting on Tuesday. What a relief to us members of the BOP VCC, who would have been more affected than most with such a proposal had they voted for it. My thanks to Rod Bayshaw who at the last minute filed a well thought out submission for the councillors to consider before they voted. Thanks also to Jack and Jenny Hoven who attended the meeting when the vote was cast, and to any other member who may also have attended the meeting. I am sure your presence had some effect on the councillors as they considered which way to vote. Thank you also to all those who voted negative at the recent referendum. We are not out of the woods yet, as I am aware the council plan to utilize some, if not all of the site we currently enjoy at Cliff Road building some monument to recognize the importance of the site to the various Maori Iwi. Still, let’s deal with that issue when it arises, and be content that we do have this breathing space to enjoy. On another note, we have our AGM at our next meeting. So far all of our current committee have put their hands up for re-election again. I am so pleased, as the committee this year has been a great one, and each and everyone of them have been a pleasure to work with and contributed so much. It is with sadness we say goodbye to Joe Scott who stands down as secretary this year. Joe has done a sterling job the last four years as secretary and will be sorely missed. So please give some thought as to who you would like to fulfil this valuable role? Also please consider who you would like as chairperson for the next year? As indicated earlier I am prepared to put my hand up for one more year, but would be happy to stand down should anyone else step forward. I am writing this in my Campervan at the Fairlie Camping Ground. It is four in the afternoon and the temperature is currently about 2 degrees. Kaaren and I are down here with Alastair Jones in preparation for the Irishman Rally which runs over Queen’s Birthday weekend. “The Luck of the Irish”

I write this parked up inside our camper van outside the Studholme Hotel at Waimate. Jim, Alastair and I are only two days away from joining the yearly pilgrimage to the 64th Irishman Creek Rally, this event is taking place the Saturday of Queens Birthday weekend. The Rally embraces 160 plus enthusiasts who will motor around South Canterbury countryside in pre-1932 vehicles of which more than half will be Model A Fords, to end up in the little town of Fairlie. For those members who are not familiar with the ‘Irishman’, the event came about because in its early years the rally went to Irishman Creeks Station, the farm run by Bill Hamilton recognised as the father of the jet boat. The rally starts at the crack of dawn on Saturday morning and will be a full on day of motoring (roughly 200 miles). On Sunday morning there is a visit to Irishman Creek. Sunday afternoon, there will be a competitive event, and at the Sunday evening gathering the lucky winner, the organiser of next years event will be announced. With our good buddy Alastair Jones in tow who is also participating in this weekend’s unknown adventures and madness, we will certainly be crossing our fingers and hoping that the ‘luck of the Irish’ will be on our side! Stay tuned and read all about the 2018 Irishman Creek Rally in my column in July. Last month Jim and I completed for the second time the Nullarbor Plains and travelled from Adelaide to Perth in a hired camper van. The trip went smoothly and was pretty non-eventful until we came upon (purely by accident) Dirk and Trudy Regter the Dutch couple travelling the world in a Model T who visited our Club. What a thrill for them and us to meet up again and in the middle of nowhere in the desert of Australia! We shared stories and a few laughs together of our travels to date over a bite to eat, and then bid them farewell for the next leg of their journey from Perth to Darwin. June is shaping up to be a reasonably active month for VCC members. Just a couple of the many events in the North Island happening at Queens Birthday weekend: Whanganui Branch have their Annual Rally, and the Waikato Veteran & Vintage Car Club will be hosting their Double 50 Rally both events - I am aware that many members will be attending. Please don’t forget about our Mid-Week Run on 13th June, Deidre Rennie has gone to a great deal of effort to make the run to the Port of Tauranga an excellent day out for us. Please refer to the advert in this Klaxon for details but as numbers are limited to only 48 people, I strongly advise you to contact Deidre now and book to ensure that you won’t miss out (please see the advert)! Also this month, Alastair and Gwen will be doing their historic End of Month Run around Tauranga (please see the advert).

Other upcoming events of importance to remind you of in August:
VCC Tauranga 60th Celebration - there will be a weekend of full celebrations to acknowledge our Branch been in existence for 60 years. Alastair and his committee are toiling away behind the scenes to make this a most memorable weekend for you all (see article in this Klaxon). August 26th is the VCC National Daffodil Day, and many of you will remember what a great run our Branch had last year that Ken and Linda put together. This year already they are well into the planning of their run for this major fundraiser for the Cancer Society - details will be in the July Klaxon. Alan Pram does a fantastic job as our convenor for the Mid Week Runs, organising month after month volunteers to strategize a run. It would be wonderful if one of you could volunteer to be our End of Month Run convenor. If you do decide to take on this role, could you please contact Chairman Jim for a chat. Last but not least of all, 11th June is our annual AGM, and I would expect our club rooms as always to be filled to capacity with keen members to listen to, amongst other reports delivered, a most impressive one from our mighty ‘Treasurer Keith’ on how healthy and prosperous financially your Branch is. The turn-out of members on our monthly Club nights are incredible. Last month alone when the ‘Bugatti Guru’ David Nordell was our guest speaker, I counted 118 heads in attendance! Hi Folks, As most of you are aware both Jill and I have been unable to join in with club activities over the last couple of months. The good news is that Jill is on the road to a full recovery. Fact is, a large number of our club members have had similar issues as well. On a sad note the loss of Neal Lindsay and Snow Greaves reminds one that if you have a bucket list follow the example of Jack and Merilyn Anderson and kick up your heels. I follow with interest the circus that is currently underway with the Council and the issue of a museum on Cliff Road. “Okay,” so we do not know what the future holds for our club but do not let that stop you participating in ensuring we have a future. It is important for several reasons: 1. Is the meeting of like minded friends that love their motoring. 2. It provides purpose and fulfilment for many club members (both men and women.) Providing a service and a job well done for our fellow members. 3. It gives both you the club member receiving all this positive good feel stuff to place yourself in a position where you can, not only provide positive feedback (and goodness knows everyone needs it from time to time,) but become involved and make the changes and decisions that will ensure our future. As for my job as Secretary, it is now time to move on and spend more time with our family in Auckland and Wellington. The grandchildren are growing up fast. The caravan needs to be used as well. Fingers crossed there will be strong competition for the job at our AGM in June. As Uncle Sam would say, “we need you.” I would ask that you respect and be grateful for the effort your Committee along with the amazing team of helpers as listed on page two of your Klaxon put into your club. All articles must be in writing and received PREFERABLY early in the month, the close off date being Wednesday following the committee meeting. Hi All, Another month closer to election time and another magazine to get out. Sometimes it all seems to happen so quick I lose pace of just exactly where and what is happening. It is great to see at last something happening as regards our 60th anniversary. Alastair has settled more or less on a programme for it and while he has watered it down from the original it is in my mind still sufficient enough to mark the event. So far as my end goes I am still very busy, but almost all done now trolling through all my photos of events and trying to assemble a decent sort of display. It looks good to me so I am in full hopes it will all attract a little interest to our members. At the moment some of our members are relocating homes and downsizing and as a result our Club Library is benefitting from it. Books and magazines are rolling in and Yvonne is working hard to try and sort out what is good and what is not and then comes the process of clean and repair and then catalogue them all. It is no small task and I am quite sure many members do not know the work that has to go into it all. However the library always looks great. Yvonne and I attended the run to Kaiaua this month and really enjoyed it. While we did not have fish and chips we did have sausage rolls on the beachfront at Miranda which was very pleasant. The tide was out and when I say that, it goes way out. About 3/4km out. There appeared to be none of the birds that the place is famous for but with a pair of binoculars there they were. Way in the distance. Then we travelled down the road to spot out an ex naval minesweeper that I had never seen before and also did not know about. We visited the bird center and learned all about the godwits that travel to Alaska to breed. Amazing stuff. By travelling non stop they almost fly from Alaska to NZ in a time comparable to Air NZ—with all its stops and things. These last 2 months have also been very broken up for the club due to many of the committee being away for one reason or another and also with inclement weather we have seen a cancelled run one month and another cancelled because a venue was not ready in time. However we are getting back on track I hope and maybe this month all will settle down to normal again. There is a lot of talk about the referendum on the museum and whether it should be in Cliff Road or downtown and it seems that maybe it is not final yet. There appears to be talk about challenges to the council etc. so maybe it is not over yet. However the council decided a few days back not to continue. I feel they would be rather brave to have decided any other way. I daresay Jim will have more to say to the meeting on the subject. Don’t forget our AGM and the fact that several positions are open. If you would like to do something to help the club along, then please advise somebody and that you are willing. Don’t just wait for someone to nominate you. That’s all from me this month, Paul

IN LOVE WITH TRIUMPHS
In memory of Neal Lindsay Neal shocked us all with his sudden departure on Monday 30 April with a heart attack. He had always been fit and well even more so with the purchase of 2 Electric Bikes for both of us. We had such plans of touring the new cycle ways. We had been together since the age of 15 so it seems I have known him forever. There were no cars in our lives back then we walked everywhere. Neal was one of 6 children, his Dad owned a Morris Oxford but none of his children were allowed behind the wheel. When he left school he had the choice of a carpenters apprentice or a mechanic. He chose to become a carpenter however, in later years with his love of cars developing he realised he should have taken the mechanic apprenticeship. Neal learnt to drive in one of his brothers Volkswagen cars and obtained his drivers licence two weeks before our wedding in 1964 so we could hire a car. The 1 st car we bought was a 1963 Austin A40 followed shortly after by a VW, by then we had two little girls but with the twins arrival in 1969 we needed to purchase a larger car, a Zephyr 6 had a big boot for our large buggy. In 1970 we moved to Tauranga and Triumph cars entered our lives. Neal fell in love with the Stromsberg carburettors. Neither of us knew the huge impact they were to have in our lives. His first purchase was a 1963 Triumph Herald in bright red, this was followed by a pale blue Triumph 2000. Neal was an avid reader and he studied these motors meticulously. He spent many a sleepless night solving a problem either for our car or for someone else. A dark blue Triumph 2000 replaced the early car and eventually he gave in and allowed me to get my licence. My James was very old fashion and did not believe in “woman drivers” Whenever I visited my Mum in Waihi, the question was always “How did the car go?” Never how is your Mum! Neal decided the Triumph was too heavier a car to teach out daughters to drive so reluctantly he purchased a little 1967 Mini. He was not a fan of working under the tiny bonnet but they were easy cars to teach the girls, our youngest eventually bought the car and so it disappeared out of our lives. Eventually the 2000 was sold and the 1973 Triumph GT6 became part of the family. Neal loved this little burnt orange car it became his pride and joy, he delighted in pulling into the passing lanes up the Kaimais and racing any other modern car to the top. It really was a nippy little car. Twelve years later with aging bodies it became harder to

get those long Lindsay legs out of the car so it was time to let it go. Of course he told everyone it was me who had trouble getting out of the car, not him! It wasn’t long before another Triumph was parked outside, a 1976 almond yellow Triumph 2000. It ran a bit rough but before long he had it running to perfection. Several years later Neal opened a trade account with Rimmer Bros in England it became a hobby for him. They ran an excellent service and were very knowledgeable. Neal soaked it all up like a sponge, we sold parts all over NZ. He took pleasure in telling all who would listen the value of Electronic Ignition and Spin on Oil Filters. We joined the Vintage Car Club in the days when they were hiring a room at the Bowling Club opposite the Courthouse. He thoroughly enjoyed all the runs and took over mowing the lawns some years ago, it is only 4 weeks ago that he brought the lawn mower home for its annual tune up, things had to run properly. Neal’s last project was to put together a 1974 Triumph Toledo for our grandson in Wellington which he found in a barn at Thames, he spent many happy and sometimes frustrated hours finding missing parts around the country. Xavier is a bit of a chip of the old block and Neal was delighted when he took up an apprentice as a mechanic.

Fish and Chips Run and Some Bird Watching – Wednesday 23rd May 2018
by Clive Taylor The phone rang, “What are you doing on Wednesday?” “Hoping to receive my parts in the post for the Alvis – why?” “I am going on the Fish and Chip run in the MG do you want to come?” “Yes, that would be fun and ease my frustration waiting for the inevitable”. So, I accepted the invitation from Graham Inglis. The starting point would be at the Wairoa Bridge Car Park for 9.15 – 9.30am. I left in plenty of time from the Kaimais to travel to Papamoa, or so I thought. I was surprised how far the traffic backs up on HWY 29 at around 8.00am before Tauriko school, nearly at the bottom of the hill by Redwood Lane. Eventually I arrived at Barkes Corner in the daisy chain, over the roundabout and there was the second queue in the other direction coming to Barkes Corner going almost back to the Oropi Roundabout. No wonder people get frustrated. Arriving at the Stadium it was pretty cruisey there and enjoyed the soft ride along the new surface towards Domain Road. I just caught site of Graham at the filling station, and we met again at his house. It is some time since I travelled in his MGB Roadster, such a comfortable ride. We jostled with the traffic and arrived at Wairoa Bridge just after 9.00am. The small collection of cars steadily grew, some I can remember are, the only Post Vintage car there, the Railton with John Redding, all the others were Post 60s, an orange MGB GT, Ken and Diane Frew’s light Blue Zodiac, A.J and Gwen in their green Morris 1000 Traveller, Chris and Jane Railton in the cute yellow Mini. There were others, but I cannot remember them! Soon we were off and the group dispersed onto HWY 2 and we could maintain a decent speed. I am pleased the route was not back into town. The traffic backed up to nearly Snodgrass Road. In all that distance I only saw one motorcycle heading to Bethlehem.
Our morning tea break was at the Gilmore Reserve Car Park just off SH 2 on the right before you enter Waihi. It is the short cut road leading to Whangamata and the Coromandel. The fountain had been turned off. We all fitted into the vacant slots. Gradually other cars arrived and filled the park bar three spaces. I counted at the time over twenty cars. An excellent response for John Carroll and Gideon de Lautour’s efforts. Cars that I can remember caught my eye were the Triumph 2500 S previously owned by Wally Jelaca and now with Ewen Kershaw. Soon we were called to order and John and Gideon thanked the assembled company for their attendance and explained the procedure to get to Miranda.

Sitting low in the MG the road looks completely different from a modern car and the trucks I used to drive especially through the Karangehake Gorge. We cruised through Paeroa, and the central roadworks onto Ngatea and turned right at the massive Honda building on the edge of the town and headed on the straight road to the Firth of Thames into the sun. This area has not changed since I used to drive on these roads, with the familiar stagger road over the bridge to turn right towards Miranda. This is a quick road with just about no traffic, and with the sun glinting on the low water tide in various pockets, we soon arrived at the Pukorokoro Miranda Shorebird Centre. This is a registered charity and supports various wildlife activities. Their website provides comprehensive details of all the activities that take place, including overnight facilities to watch the bird life in their natural surroundings. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by Chelsea, and she explained the reason for the Trust being set up and the work that they undertake, especially tagging birds to track their various flight paths. Below is an extract from their website, a thoroughly interesting venture.

BIRDS: The Miranda Coast is the most important wintering ground for Wrybill. This endemic is unique among birds in having a bill curved to the side. The estimated total species population is only 5300, up to 40% of which flock to Miranda at the end of the breeding season. At least three endemic species breed at Miranda; the New Zealand Dotterel, Variable Oystercatcher and Black -Billed Gull. Other Wrybill breeding species include Pied Stilt, Spurwinged Plover, White-faced Heron, Banded Rail , Black-backed Gull, White-fronted Tern and Pukeko. In recent years the following species have also been present: Marsh Sandpiper, Pacific Golden Plover, Pectoral Sandpiper, Whimbrel and Large Sand Dotterel. New vagrants are seen on a regular basis, with Semi-palmated Plover added in 2011 Other species regularly seen include: Grey Teal, New Zealand Shoveler, Sacred Kingfisher, five species of Cormorant, White Heron, Cattle Egret, Royal Spoonbill and occasionally Banded Rail or Australasian Bittern. MIGRATION Thousands of shorebirds can be seen on the shellbanks and tidal flats at Miranda on the Firth of Thames. Many of them breed on the tundra of Eastern Siberia and Alaska. In late September through to early November they arrive exhausted and hungry at the end of the last leg of their epic journey. For some it is two months and over 12,000 km since they left their Arctic breeding grounds. Over the next few months they will remain at Miranda feeding, resting and moulting. Then in late March they will set off once again, flying north to the Arctic. It is a remarkable tale of migration, and it is told at the Miranda Shorebird

Centre. Miranda also plays an important role in migration systems within New Zealand. Each year huge flocks of Pied Oystercatchers return after breeding in the South Island. Over 20,000 can be found on the Firth of Thames from late summer. Up to 2500 Wrybill, around 40% of the total number, also flock at Miranda for the non-breeding season. At the same time there may also be hundreds of Banded Dotterel. At midday, we moved onto Kaiaua Fisheries for their famous fish and chips service. The fish and chips did not disappoint, freshly cooked and served in traditional paper. In the lunch time, the opportunity to talk to everyone was possible and the environment was relaxing and convivial. Just as we were leaving John Carroll asked me if I would like to write a report for the trip? Yes of course, anything for the club. The last part of the trip was to visit the mine sweeper Hinau at Kioria. Unfortunately for myself and Graham, we could not find it in the time we had available and so we missed this opportunity. However, there is a stunning image of the remains of the vessel on their website. While notes are always reflective, mine are more so, relying on my memory for the details submitted above. I would like to thank John and Gideon for the run, always a unique experience and also on behalf of all the participants as well. Letter from Don White: Most of you will remember reading in last month's Klaxon about my Rover 620 being damaged in the BOP VCC car park on April 09. Many of us were concerned that one of our members possibly knew about the incident but had not spoken up. Well - I'm pleased to say within hours of last month's Klaxon being published I received a phone call. It was one of our members that backed into my car but he thought at the time that no damage had been done. After reading my story he put two and two together and this was confirmed when he noticed a fair amount white paint on the tow ball of his vehicle. The two of us amicably sorted the problem out. All I wished for was to be squared up for getting the front bumper resprayed. I was so pleased that this person owned up that I did not seek reimbursement for my time involved removing the bumper cover, taking it to the car painter and then seeing to the refit. All good now and my faith in human nature is restored. Donn White

It was to be followed in 1966, by the Aranui and then later by the Arahanga (1972) and the Arahura (1983) 1962: Overseas the British and the French agreed to develop the Concorde supersonic airliner. 1962: In 1962 Bruce McLaren began driving for Cooper Climax then later became more involved with them in aspects of the car design. 1963: Dangerous drivers are now able to be banned from driving under a new amendment to the Transport Act. 1963: Teal began a service between Auckland and Noumea and Wellington to Brisbane. It also ordered the first of its Douglas DC-8 pure jet airlines. 1963: An NAC DC-3 crashed in the Kaimais on route from Auckland to Tauranga killing all 23 people on board. 1963: NZ post issued a stamp celebrating this years centenary of the nations railways.
