Despite the cold weather, our club meeting was still well attended with 64 members present including a visitor from the Wellington branch, Warrick Lang. The speaker for the night was John Blakey who was arranged and assisted by Colin Geange. He gave an interesting talk on his experiences in racing cars. I would like to thank all the members who willingly assisted with the supper duties, doing the dishes, etc., as soon as I asked for help on club night, thank you all, your assistance is appreciated. The working bee on Saturday morning was also well attended with over 30 members attending and again a very social morning with a great morning tea arranged by Pete Collins. The morning was followed by a committee meeting of the committee that is making the arrangements for the coming National North Island 2020 Easter Rally. This is promising to be a great weekend with some wonderful events and opportunities for our branch to show the rest of the country just how great a club we are. The Night Owl rally was a great success thanks to Alton Harrison who arranged the course. The winner was Verdon Heath. Our next outing is Daffodil Day on Sunday the 25th of this month. It is in the New World car park starting at 9.30 am and finishing around 1.30 pm. All attendees are then invited back to the clubrooms for a shared lunch. Spares and the Library will be open and the public will be invited to view and possibly ride in some of the cars. I would also like to welcome Roderick Kinghorn to our branch. Roderick is transferring his membership from Wellington branch to Horowhenua. On a sad note, our thoughts and condolences are extended to Mark and Janet Gibson on the passing of Janet’s mother. I look forward to seeing you all on the 25th of August for our annual Daffodil day. Until then. Regards.

This run will be the basis of the Hawke's Bay Branch Annual Safari who will be responsible for the entry forms. Note that there are two starting points for the rally on the Friday (October 25), one from from Napier organised by the Hawke's Bay branch and one from Opotiki organised by the Eastern Bay of Plenty branch. Subject: 1920 Continental 7R Engine Hello from a fellow Canterbury VCC member. I am currently restoring a 1920 Davis Phaeton and am currently in the middle of rebuilding the engine, which was dismantled and packed away in a crate approx 50 years ago! The same goes for the rest of the car - a big jigsaw of parts to put back together, but slowly starting to get to the running chassis stage - just the engine to complete before commencing the body work. The engine is a Continental 7R six cylinder and I am looking to see if anyone in your club has a spare parts engine in their workshop/parts shed as I am missing some parts to complete the rebuild. Daffodil Rally for Cancer our national day - Sunday August 25, 10 am to 2 pm. This year a change of location to the New World Supermarket Levin, back parking lot. Overspill into Fat Boyz Pub carpark. Bob B and I will be there at 8.30 am to set up. All assistance is appreciated. Bring your car and wear the banners please! This is as much about showcasing our club in our town as helping the Cancer Society. So get that car out of its winter hibernation! If you know friends with a car or another club, bring them along! In a different twist, this year we are all heading back to our clubrooms for a late lunch, so bring your nibbles, we are also going to extend this invite to any other car owners and clubs present. This is so that they may see our club’s hospitality and Callum will have Spares open. Please note: If rained off, it’s the following Sunday folks! See you all there, cheers.

A run to Steam Incorporated at Paekakariki
When: Saturday 7 September. Meet outside the goods shed beside SH 1 at 1.30 pm. This is for an important briefing. Attention: The safe way to get there if arriving from the north. Pass Steam Incorporated, turn right into Paekakariki township across the railway lines. Do a U-turn near the shops, when safe and head back to SH1. Cross the rail crossing and turn left and merge. Pull left into the gravel car park as early as possible, beside the goods shed. Please do not stop in the middle of the south bound lane to cross to the car park, it is too dangerous and illegal on SH1. Ja 1271 will be in steam on Saturday in preparation for a run to Masterton the next day. This is an opportunity to have a look on the footplate when a loco is in steam and check other equipment Steam Inc has at the depot.

MINUTES OF LAST MEETING. Taken as read and approved. Winton// Andrew Judd CORRESPONDENCE: A lot of information has come from National Office and has been sent on to the appropriate people. Also an advisory about change to road layout was emailed to members. We have written a letter to NZTA with ideas re their request about what the public want done to the old state highway one. TREASURER’S REPORT: Jackie read out the amounts held in the various bank accounts. Jackie/ Pete CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT: There was a good turnout for the Night Owl rally with approximately 25 cars. It was won by Verdon Heath. August 25 is Daffodil Day fund raiser for the cancer society. An email will be sent out on the Saturday night previous if it is being cancelled due to weather. September 7th we are going to Steam Incorporated. A Steam train will be in steam. More information in Spark. October 12th we are visiting Auto Classic in Paraparaumu and then a café afterwards. LIBRARY: A lot of books have come in. SPARES: Have been busy with a lot of stuff coming in. More information in Spark. GENERAL BUSINESS: The Easter Rally advert is now in Beaded Wheels and we are not going to run the Ted Green rally during the Easter Rally. Mark Dunn advised that the Hot Rod people only want 5 cars plus our portable garage at their show. Also they need help to man the gates. This event is being held on the 29 September. Des asked members if they wanted a speaker every meeting. He asked for people to contact him if they wanted a change. One idea that came up was the first meeting for the year would be a BBQ. SPEAKER: John Blakie gave a very interesting talk about his involvement in racing classic cars. His cars are a Mini and a BMW. The meeting closed at 9.15 pm.
The night owl rally was well patronised with 15 cars taking part. The weather leading up to Sunday evening was dreadful with heavy showers maybe deterring some people from venturing out. Luckily the rain stopped just before 7pm allowing us to have a dry run through to Waitarere Beach, answered some questions about some of the features of the area then back to the club rooms for a warm drink and natter. Rex had a Hoop-la made of a con rod and piston rings which added a bit more fun to the evening. The trophy was won by Verdon and Viv. Of course they now have the privilege of organising next year’s event! August 25

NORTH ISLAND EASTER RALLY UPDATE – To inform Horowhenua Members of progress to date. We are keeping you informed.
Further to the update provided in your July issue of Spark we are pleased to tell you that the 2020 National Easter Rally Committee has obtained approval for our publicity documents and entry forms. Much of this approval was obtained from the North Island and South Island Club Captains. This included the rally plaque, the Beaded Wheels advertisement, the Rally Entry Booklet and the Entry Form. In particular the principal sponsor, Vero had to be consulted regarding the use of their current logo. All of these have now been successfully achieved. Beaded Wheels now displays the advertisement under Swap Meets and Rallies and the Entry Form and Booklet have been printed and will be distributed at the National AGM this coming weekend. This issue of Spark carries these documents for your information and use for registration. They are currently being distributed via email to all branches. Planning continues and I am very pleased with progress to date. I look forward to keeping you up to date with our progress. The depths of winter are upon us and our members are hibernating in their sheds waiting the new spring. Spares in the meantime has quietly been working away, with a pick up in the southern area of the branch which yielded a somewhat interesting item, that being an unrestored BSA ladies bicycle. Also we have taken delivery of the second trailer load of top quality spares from one of our long term members. At the time of writing we have a large quantity of New Old Stock oil, some of which goes back 80 years. If any members would like their oil cans filled free of charge, see your Spares Department at the working bee. Safe travelling everyone.
