Chairman’s Report Hi everybody, I expect you are as fed up with all this rain as we are, but Branch events still carry on. John Stokes' Veteran section had 20 people turn up for a interesting meeting. In the report there was mention of The Art Deco organisers wanting Veterans to take part, so we will discuss the possibility of taking the Charabanc there. The Mid Week Tourers had another good day out which went to Glenbrook to see a very impressive model railway set up. They had around 50 members turn up, which included a number of children. The Motorcycle section had 60 plus members turn up to hear motorcycle racer Paul Pavletich talk about his motor bike racing career which started when he was 16 and still continues today. We also had the Eddie Sim Motorcycle run plotted by Graeme Crawley. This run was set in Auckland city. We had 10 motorcycles and 4 cars (23 people) in attendance and visited the historical Alberton House in Mt Albert and the Colin McCahon home in French Bay. Graeme took us on side streets across Auckland, missing out the major roads. On August’s Club night we had a guest speaker from the SS Toroa Preservation Society. On the following Saturday night we had a Bingo fundraiser for Daffodil Day and then Sunday was our monthly club run, which was for the National Daffodil Day, finishing at The Edmund Hillary Retirement Village, Remuera. Well that’s all for now, hope to see you out on our runs, rallies and club nights.

Club Captain’s Report As I write this I am looking at the daffodils in bloom around the trees in my garden, reminding me that spring is just a week away. We have had quite a busy month in August. The Mid Week Tourers had another good turnout visiting a miniature railway at Glenbrook. It is pleasing to see John Stokes’ Veteran section meetings very well attended each month. The Motorcycle section had another very successful meeting, with Paul Pavletich, - racer – being their guest speaker. The following day they had a very urban Rally – a Cultural tour visiting Alberton House in Mt Albert and the artist Colin McCahon’s home in French Bay. Very enjoyable. A number of members went to the Sulphur City Rally in Rotorua, with Wayne and Carrie Roberts taking a small group on a mini pre rally tour down to Rotorua. I understand Auckland Branch had some good results, so congratulations to all those who picked up a prize. Club night saw members learning about the restoration of the steam ferry boat S.S.TOROA. We are hoping to take a monthly run to visit the restoration at a later date. During the month of August the Branch has been fundraising for the National Cancer Research Daffodil Day. We have had collection boxes at the Motorcycle Meeting, Mid Week Tourers, Club Night and finally the big charge during the last weekend of August. We had a well attended Bingo night on the Saturday, which saw a number of winners of a line and a full house. We also had a number of quick fire raffles and were treated to a lovely supper during the evening. Thanks must go to our sponsors who provided food for the night. Also my thanks to Russel and Jocelyn McAlpine for organising the prizes and to John Campbell our Bingo caller and his wonder assistant Pat. Thanks to the ladies, Pat Campbell, Fay Kitson, Barbara Allbon, Dennise Mercer and Pat Dewhurst for the catering. On the Sunday we had an auction of a lovely cyclamen in a gorgeous watering can and a Jamie Oliver cook book, both kindly donated by Fay & Dudley Kitson, before the 28 vehicles set off on the very short route to the Sir Edmund Hillary Retirement Village, with a few more joining us direct at the village. We had a great selection of vehicles, from a 1903 Oldsmobile through to mid 1980 vehicles, plus 5 motorcycles and of course the Charabanc. In total we had 33 vehicles on display. Martin and I plus our grandson, Riley, travelled in the Charabanc. It was a bit nippy, but what a treat and Riley loved it. At the village we were greeted by a huge crowd of residents and their families and the Charabanc was kept busy giving rides around the village. Everyone was engaged in conversation with Branch members about the cars on display and reminiscing about their own and their parents’ vehicles. The village put on afternoon tea which nearing the end of the afternoon, I was grateful for a cuppa, as I was nearly hoarse with all the talking to everyone. Our endeavours from all the fundraising was around $1600. Many thanks to everyone who gave their time, support and money to this very worthwhile event. Winner of this timed event was Russel & Jocelyn McAlpine, closely followed by Wayne Welch in 2nd place and one second later, John & Janice Gardner.

Club Captain’s Report Contd... There are a number of Branch events in September and I look forward to seeing you out and about in or on your vehicles enjoying these events. You will find the Hunua Entry form in August’s Bulletin. It is the 60th Anniversary of this event and we would love to have 100+ vehicles entered. If you are a solo driver and need a passenger for navigation and company, let me know and we can get someone organised. We would rather have you out enjoying our showcase event of the year, than you not entering. Marshals are required as well, so you may like to give your assistance in this area if not entering. Congratulations to all winners of August’s runs and rallies.

Library Notes Last month we had a visit from a couple in Hawkes Bay who came to see our Library but got diverted into our Spare Parts after morning tea. To our surprise they found a steering box and column for a Veteran that we had forgotten we had and that was the end of the Library inspection for that day ! We received three large donations of books in August. Motorcycle Notes We had a damp start to the day for the August Motorcycle meeting but when we arrived at the club rooms the sun was out and in the car park there were 14 motorcycles. Member David Broadhead came on his latest motor bike, a 1975 BMW 750, and John Comer arrived on another bike from his collection, a very tidy 1950 Triumph Thunderbird We had 60 plus members in attendance and 2 visitors Tony Kay – Indian 741, Laurie Loveday - Triumph T120, and new member Alan Masy – Norton Commando. Martin said he had spoken to long time member Ray Clarke that morning and said Ray was back out of convalescent and is much better. Martin presented Brian Gathercole with the Motorcycle Points trophy and then presented Michael O'Kane with the Kick Start trophy and a 4lt oil pack. We had the Eddie Sim run on the 19th August, plotted by Graeme Crawley. Martin presented John Campbell with a thank you gift after he stood down from Committee. Coming Up: September 22—Motorcycle meeting, guest speaker will be Colin Tucker, NZ motorcycle Speedway legend. September 23—The Mug Run, leaving from the Jolly Farmer, Drury at 11:00 a.m. October 7—Wet Leg Run starting from BP Service Centre Southern Motorway at 11:00 a.m. The Rubber Duckie will have been and gone. We are now looking forward to our Branches Hunua 100 rally which celebrates its 60th Anniversary. It will be over Labour weekend 20-21 October. The entry form is in the August Bulletin or you can down load it from our web site. Guest Speaker—Paul Pavletich Paul hails from South Auckland and at the age of 16 he started motorbike racing and came 2nd in his first race. Paul is a former CEO of Motorcycling New Zealand, the sports governing body and he has won every class that he has entered over his long and illustrious racing career, a career he rekindled in 2010 after an 11 year hiatus. He won in every class, except for the 250cc class, because he was just too tall and heavy for those bikes. The Pro Twins is a series open to any twin cylinder racing machine and Pavletich raced a KTM 1290R Super Duke, Pavletich’s machine is tuned by his race team of over 35 years, including his brother, Mark Pavletich and good friend Craig Griffin. Pavletich dominated the series with 10 wins from 11 starts, although strong challenges did come from rivals Brendan Holland riding an Aprilia bike and Malcolm Bell riding a Ducati Millie 1000, Holland is a three time former Pro Twin series winner. Pavletich has now won 14 Auckland Motorcycle Club championships on motorcycles and has also won four car series titles driving Nissan's. Paul's latest bike is a 1989 Yamaha OW01 (fitted with a Yamaha FZR1000W engine). Paul has tuned this engine to give 172 bhp at the rear wheel. The bike has been highly modified with the best wheels, brakes, suspension and is worth around $70,000. Paul had brought this bike along to the club rooms for us to look at. Paul is also part of Pro Rider training. Paul gave away a number of free vouchers for Pro Rider courses at the end of his talk. Paul answered many questions from the floor and continued after the meeting. Martin thanked Paul for coming to talk to us.

Entertainment Notes Many thanks to Rob Brown and his crew from the Toroa Preservation Society for their interesting and informative presentation on the restoration of this old vessel. Certainly makes restoring a car look easy! Our Bingo night was held in conjunction with the National Daffodil Rally event and managed to raise $867.00. Many thanks to our tireless crew of ladies, Pat Campbell, Fay Kitson and Barbara Allbon who are never hesitant in putting their hands up to help out. Thanks too to John Campbell our caller and to all those who supported this event. September 27 club night is one not to be missed. October club night falls after the Hunua weekend so our plotters are available on Bulletin Mailing night Thursday 11 October to go over our club rally rule interpretations. Rodger and Val Ball have plotted a straight forward run over some lovely rural roads for this year’s special 60th event which I am sure many of you will support and help the Branch celebrate this milestone event. November will see the return of the “Saturday club night”, to be held on the afternoon of the 10th. We will have experts on hand to again help members complete those VIC forms and answer any questions in this area. Also as promised, we are having another Barn Machinery Safety demonstration on this afternoon too. Remember you need to attend a Health and Safety demonstration before you can use any of the machinery in the barn.

Commercial Notes Recently I received some photographs and a bit of information on an icon of early Auckland motoring, W. S. (Bill) Miller. Much has been written about this empire over the years, but I have regurgitated a little of it once again. Anyone still with us when Miller’s Garage operated in Khyber Pass Road would be very old indeed today. In the early 1920’s, Miller’s Garage not only fixed your car, but is credited with being one of the first to sell pumped petrol (albeit by hand) into your vehicle. Owner Bill Miller imported “Span” petrol from the United States. He off loaded the 44 gallon drums onto scows in the upper harbour and hauled them up from the landing he had at the bottom of his Glendene “Span” farm. The property was originally the “Hepburn Brickworks” and was ready made for the Miller enterprise. The drums were stored in a large shed, before being transported to his garage on the corner of Burleigh St and Khyber Pass Rd., which had originally been a skating rink. I remember skating in a rink there in the 1950’s as a teenager. Perhaps it returned to that scenario after W.S. Miller shut their doors. How many of you, like me will be using the centre lanes only, once this cycle/ walkway thing is hung on the harbour bridge. In the 1980s, I contracted to the Harbour Bridge Authority and will never forget one of their Engineers telling me the two clip-ons were held against the main structure by enormous steel rods and that if one side let go, both would be swimming. Now they want to add a few hundred tons to one side only, because the bulk of the heavy traffic heads the opposite way, great!! Keep M Rolling John Campbell

Veteran Notes We had a good turn out of about twenty people at the August meeting, with four apologies including one from Wellsford’s Doug Hamilton, who was being shaken about in Indonesia. Gary Bax and Murray Atkinson have put the Saxon on the market, you can see it on Trademe. Gavin Welch showed a veteran or vintage petrol mix atomiser. These were fitted between the carburettor and the inlet manifold and reatomised the mixture as it travelled into the manifold, in the hope of getting a more powerful explosion. Gavin’s device also featured a small propeller to enhance the swirl effect. Dennis Lowe produced a curious device which couldn't be identified. Dennis told us that it was in fact a hand valve lapping tool and a very early one at that. Dennis also reported that he has found very fine timing marks on the flywheel of his Curved Dash Oldsmobile. Monty Scarborough reports little veteran activity as he has been re-wooding the ex Wilbur Brown, ex Ron Richards 1924 Model T Ford, some other adjustments had been made as well. Roy Sharman discussed a significant collection of cars in the South Island. He had made contact with the owner who seems to like his privacy. The Branch spares made a good contribution to Pat Bren and Mike Stewart’s 1908 Daimler project. The couple were visiting the club rooms and Pat discovered a suitable steering box, which had probably sat there since the 'seventies, so it now has a home in Hawkes Bay. David Lane has been logging more miles in his Model T race-about, while Bryan Belcher made mention of a rare steering box in his collection. Wayne Welch is getting a trailer made for his Model T. After five years research, Barry Robert has worked out the dates of the original Old Crocks Race in the 1930's. I note that Art Deco organisers are seeking to attract Veterans to this event. As the Branch Renault Charabanc has just obtained a WOF that will just cover this event, there has been some discussion about transporting it to the event. This is very much a CONCEPT at this stage. Committee approval would be needed, plus it would have to be organised. Preference would be given to PRESENT and PAST CREW, if you are interested please contact me. John Stokes

Secretary’s Notes Thanks for your responses regarding emailing Bulletins. The last Bulletin note and separate email has generated a better response. To date we have about 15% of the membership opting to have all their Bulletins sent by email and approximately 5% asking for all Bulletins to be posted. The balance remain with the one post, one email cycle. Please remember to let me know if your email address changes and if you wish to have all Bulletins via email or via snail mail and haven’t already done so, please make contact. In the next month or so, we will be endeavouring to make contact with all members who don’t have an email address recorded. As the weather starts to improve the calendar gets busier. There are certainly plenty of events happening around the country and if you need an entry form for something, let me know. Entry forms are usually available in the clubrooms for upcoming events, but I usually have a soft copy for any National Calendar event and can easily email you a copy. In the next month or so we have Auckland members travelling to Wairarapa, Far North, Taranaki and some will have attended Rotorua’s rally a couple of weeks ago. Last month Martin and I (along with Lynda and Stephen) attended the National AGM, and Executive meeting in Napier. See report elsewhere in the Bulletin, Greg Terrill gave a presentation on progress to date on the 2021 Vero Festival of Motoring and I urge you all to think about attending this, again see separate Bulletin note. From the Committee table, the Charabanc will be attending the Farmers Santa Parade, the guillotine blades are being sharpened and planning continues on the 60th Hunua 100 celebrations. We will be holding another Health and Safety Briefing for using the barn workshop equipment and on the same afternoon run another VIC card application working session. Due to falling memberships, a couple of other car clubs have stopped renting our clubrooms for their meetings. Hiring out the clubrooms to suitable tenants is a source of revenue for the Branch, so if you know of any club or such like who may be looking for premises to hire, get In touch with Don Green. We are also going to go back to opening the floor at club night for discussion on any club matter you may want to bring up. We are going to trial this once a quarter with the first one being in October.

Mid Week Tourers Thank you, John and Ngaire Cheale, for last month’s run to Pukeoware. Old familiar countryside and roads, but fresh eyes doing the plotting always gives a new perspective. Well done! A short and simple run delivered everyone to the Glenbrook Model Railway. No, not the full-size vintage one, this one is a miniature, beautifully set out in a modern complex which is right alongside the “main trunk line” (to Waiuku) in Morley Rd. Over 800 metres of track laid out on what seemed to be dozens of different lines. I am told over 600 units of rolling stock, many locomotives and most of them running and synchronised together all at the same time. The mind boggles at the thought of how much wiring has been necessary to achieve this. The large lunch room and kitchen at one end was adequate and we all fitted in. I guess there were at least 50 adults, plus, the good news, a number of children. Could have been the teachers strike. For that matter, how many of the adults present were teachers incognito? Thank you, Bob and Julie McMurtrie, our hosts. There were over thirty starters, our apologies if we missed anyone. Good to see Clive Geary, the Campbell’s were motoring well in their Plymouth Belvedere, keep those fingers crossed John, newish member Harvey Brewer brought his sweet little Austin 7, old member Trevor Slater was there with Trevor Farr and Dudley & Fay Kitson were helping with the Daffodil Day buckets. $82.10 was collected, making a total of $146.10 from the Mid-Weekers to date. Thank you, one and all. For those older members who remember Eb Moffit, 50year member and one time Committee member in a number of capacities, he is now in permanent care in Parkhaven hospital in Mangere. He will welcome any visitors, although probably brief. Coming Events: Wednesday 19 September: Starts from the Warehouse Carpark, Westgate 10:00 a.m. for a 10:30 a.m. departure. Kelvin Hawke has offered to organise this one and intends to take us to a member who has a ‘passing interest’ in old omnibuses, as well as light commercials from Yorkshire. BYO everything. Wednesday 17 October: Starts from the Drury Service Centre, Southern Motorway 10:00 a.m. for a 10:30 a.m. departure. More details to come, but probably BYO everything. Wednesday 21 November: Starts from the Warehouse Carpark, Westgate 10:00 a.m. for a 10:30 a.m. departure. Jack Nazer has a run which will finish at the Devonport Museum.

Eddie Sim Run Lynda and I plus our two grandchildren, Riley and Isabella, set off from Pokeno at 10:00 a.m. on a nice sunny morning. We arrived at the starting place in Cornwall Park to find assembled 4 cars and 10 motorcycles (23 people), plotter Graeme Crawley gave us the briefing and read out his poem on the run which was very amusing. The instructions took us on minor roads away from the busy ones. We arrived at the historic Alberton House in Mt Albert at 11:15 a.m. and were welcomed by the staff and told the history of the Taylor family who built the farm house in1863, which was expanded to an 18 room mansion. They owned 500 acres which the 3 brothers split between them. The last member passed away in 1972. The house is right next door to DSIR who had intentions of buying the property to extend their facility into the 2 acres, but the last owner found out just before she passed away and gave the property to the nation. We spent around 40 minutes exploring the many rooms on the 3 floors which are full of the families furniture and possessions. Graeme had taken pre orders for meat pies for lunch. Graeme’s wife Marilyn and daughter Anthe brought the pies along to go with the coffee and a selection of teas. We all sat down on the veranda at a long table with a lace table cloth and bone china for our drinks. The teas came in silver tea pots which gave each person 3 to 4 cups each. Now if you haven’t been to Alberton, do go and have a look at this great bit of New Zealand history. We then carried on our journey through the back roads to French Bay, Titirangi. We arrived at the Colin McCahon home at 1:15 p.m. and were split into two groups. The first group went down to the house and had the guided tour, whilst the second group went into the small old garage and watched a 15minute video on Colin’s life. We then swapped around with the other group. Again, if you haven’t been, do go and see and hear about one of New Zealand’s famous artists. Graeme and I worked out the placings for the Eddie Sim, 1st was Paul and Robyn Muir riding their 1947 Velocette 350 Mac from Kaiaua and 2nd was Peter and Judy Alderdice who rode from Brookby on their1954 Ariel Square 4. Rotorua Sulphur City Rally The Rotorua Sulphur City Rally held on the 25th August was down on numbers a bit, with 46 starters. The weather stayed fine as the rally route weaved through scenic back country roads. The usual silent checks and questions were there to get us scratching our brain matter, but this year there were photos of the countryside to find as well, not an easy task. After 60 miles to the lunch break, the local school put on a meal to remember, one of the best lunches I have encountered. Delegate’s Report In August Martin Spicer and I attended the National AGM and August Executive Meeting. Key points to note: ¨ An operating surplus for the year was achieved (against a budgeted loss) due to reduced spending. The management committee are reviewing office staffing with a view to adding a part time role to assist Julie, the Office Manager. The demands on the sole charge office role are increasing, combined with the need for back up for both holiday and illness cover. ¨ Lobbying continues to obtain 12 month WOF inspections for historic motor vehicles. ¨ A new vehicle group has been proposed for all FIVA members to consider – Vehicles of potential interest - the intent is that this will catch low mileage original vehicles, or vehicles with significant or famous ownership history, sporting history, unique design features, limited production, rarity etc. ¨ Notices of Motion regarding the P80 class Notice of Motion TWO (Tony Bartlett/ Rod Brayshaw) was passed with an 88% majority. ¨ Nationally 16% of the club voted. Auckland Branch had 96 members vote or 14% of the Branch membership. ¨ The 2019/2020 budget was passed with a $5 increase to National Subscriptions and a $1 increase to the joint member levy. ¨ Work on a standard constitution for all branches continues. ¨ Health and Safety templates are WIP. ¨ Members who reach 60 year continuous membership will receive a 60 year badge and a framed certificate. ¨ There have been minor amendments to the Technical Code. ¨ Dave Allbon has retired as Chairperson of the Vehicle Technical Committee after 17 year’s service, 12 of those as chairperson. Roger White has been elected Chairperson. Michael O’Kane and Michael Pidgeon have joined the Technical Committee. ¨ 11,204 Vehicle Identity Cards have now been accepted and processed (up to June 2018). ¨ A draft Code of Conduct has been drafted for consideration before the next Executive meeting. ¨ There were only 2 nominations for the 3 management members and the Management Committee will look to second someone to fill the vacant position. ¨ Progress on the Vero Festival of Motoring 2021 in New Plymouth continues, with a great event planned, the organising Committee are targeting attendance at a minimum of 10% of our membership.
