Chairman’s Report Hi everyone—Daylight saving is here and we're into longer rally days or working on our pride and joys out in the garage. I attended the Veteran September section's meeting as John Stokes was moving house. There were about 15 there with 3 out of towners from Katikati and Hamilton. The Motorcycle meeting had another good turn out to hear member Rob Lauder talk about his recent trip to the Isle of Man TT. He also showed photographs and film taken there. This was followed up with a borrowed film of the NZ TT which was held on Waiheke Island for a number of years, this one was of the 1933 event. The PV Rally was held in very changeable conditions, with sun, wind, rain and hail. Lynda and I were on an off course check in Hunua Village and on the other side of the road was Paul Tomlin who was the on course check. We must have got half the entry on our side. The overall winner was Gavin Welch and Sophie Zhao. The Taranaki Rubber Duckie Rally had about 12 of our members taking part and this year the overall winners were our members John and Jill Williams in their 3 wheeled Morgan. Other members of the Branch won awards, see report elsewhere in the Bulletin. Over that same weekend was the Auckland Motorcycle Show held at the ASB Show Grounds. This was the largest bike show ever covering three and a half halls. My day started on Friday morning at 9:00am, picking up 9 members bikes and taking them to the show. Luckily I had my daughter Beatrice helping me. We set up our club stand in hall 2 and had 36 bikes on display - the largest number of bikes of all the club stands. The show was a great success. Saturday and Sunday the halls were filled from opening till just after lunch time when it thinned out a bit. The show made $180.000 for the Papakura Rotary Club's various charities. The September club run was the Ladies Run plotted by Val Ball. The weather was good for us and there were 19 club cars and 5 bikes - I rode my Honda CBX. We had a good journey from Papakura to Hunua and then finishing at Kings Plant Barn's cafe. The winners were Rodger Ball (Driver), Russel McAlpine (Navigator) and Marion Morris (Back seat passenger). Coming up is the Hunua 100 Rally, the Branch’s showpiece event. There's still time to get your entry in, so let’s make it a good turnout for Peter Alderdice, the plotter and the Branch. On that subject Peter explained the Club’s Rally Rules at our last club night. Keep those 2,3, and 4 wheels turning safely.

Notes from your Secretary Wow, we are ¾ of the way through the year and Summer motoring is almost here. I have entry forms for King Country Branch Journey through Time Rally in October, The Far North Tour in November and Waikato’s Veteran Rally in November. I’ve said it before but I really encourage you to get out and travel to some of the out of town events. They are a great way to see the country and meet new people. You will have had your subscription renewal and if you haven’t paid yet you need to get it in quick smart to enjoy the early payment discount. If you are paying by Direct Credit to the National Office, please make sure you use your membership number when making the payment. Every year Julie has to track down payments where no reference is given with the payment. We have had a new batch of Branch Bumper Badges cast and they are available at the clubrooms for $15.00 each. They look pretty good—just see any Committee member. A variety of other badges are also available for sale and also our club polo shirts, hoodies and jackets can be ordered from myself. Our Facebook page has cracked 100 followers. If you aren’t on the email tree drop me an email and remember if you are changing your email address with the imminent Vodafone email shutdown, you’ll need to let me know your new address. Lastly, I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible out on the Hunua 100 at Labour Weekend, it promises to be a cracker. Tracey Winterbottom

Club Captain’s Report Where has the last month gone? So much is happening and time just flies by. September has been another excellent month for runs and rallies. Thanks to our plotters this month, being Peter Alderdice for the PV Rally and Val Ball for the Ladies Run. Thanks to Judy Alderdice for providing a wonderful Devonshire Tea before the start of the PV Rally and also for preparing everyone’s lunches. Also thanks to Jocelyn McAlpine for helping Val Ball with the Ladies Run. Attendance’s at events are increasing and we saw a very pleasing entry of 38 for the PV Rally, with vehicles from all era’s taking part in what was not an overly pleasant day weather-wise. Whilst at the Hunua off course check Martin and I experienced hail and wind that buffered our Holden car to a gentle rock. Those who attended this rally had an experience that I am sure they found interesting. Peter had managed to get the Brookby Quarry opened up and so vehicles were able to pass through and see the scale of the operation. The rally was finished off with a very pleasant prize giving and dinner at the clubrooms. A lot of laughter could be heard during the course of the evening and lots of happy faces seen. Congratulations to all the various class winners and to overall winners Gavin Welch & Sophie Zhao. Please see the full report further in the Bulletin. The monthly Club run, the Ladies Run, plotted by Val Ball was held in much nicer weather and we had 19 cars and 5 motorcycles come out and enjoy a gentle run around the South Auckland countryside finishing at Kings Plant Barn in Takanini. There was straight-line navigation instructions which no doubt some of the bike entries found a bit challenging but everyone finished. The overall winners were The Triple A Team which consisted of Rodger Ball (Driver), Russel McAlpine (Navigator) and Marion Morris (back seat passenger). Well done. Of course, as with every event entered, everyone is given points towards the “Points Trophy” awarded at the AGM annually. September Club night Peter Alderdice shared Rally rules, the difference between a turn right, bear right and an acute right, for instance. About 40 people turned out and it was great to see some newer members come along to learn how rally instructions are interpreted. Thanks Peter. The monthly meetings for the various sections of the Branch are being well attended and it is pleasing to see each month new members joining our Branch. My thanks goes to Martin, for giving away attending the Rubber Duckie this year to promote the Auckland Branch again at the Motorcycle Show in Greenlane. Unfortunately this year it clashed with a calendar event but promoting our Branch took precedence. A very successful event and hopefully new members will come from this. Mid Week tourers had another good adventure this month – see their report, elsewhere in the Bulletin. Please put these dates in your diary. October 18th Mid Week Tourers—Another tour South October 21-22nd—Hunua 100. If you have not entered already please do so. This is our Branch Showcase Event and your Committee and the Rally Plotter work extremely hard to make for a pleasant and successful event. On the Sunday is the Hunua 100 Rally and Peter Alderdice has plotted an extremely pleasant run. The weekend finishes with the evening meal and prize-giving. If you’re not participating with a vehicle, please consider offering your services as a Marshal, I am sure Peter would appreciate the help and if you are new to the Branch this is a great way of meeting fellow Branch members and members from other branches as well. October 28-29th—A tour down to Te Kauri Lodge with an overnight stay. Please contact Martin or Lynda if you wish to participate. Veteran Notes Martin Spicer came along to apologise for the change in date for our meeting to the 1st Saturday because the Motorcycle group often need the second Saturday to work in with other branches. Terry Jenkins is looking for a dye or spray to restore the black underside of his Dodge hood. Roy Sharman suggested Leatherman in Otahuhu. Roy Sharman saw Rover 12 parts on TradeMe, enough to build a car for $1200 and wonders where they come from. Suggestion, ex Charlie Black. Trevor Gordon, visitor from Katikati is looking for restoration work. Is working on Marshal's La France. Dennis Lowe has bought a new Oldsmobile crankshaft from a batch being made in the UK by Phil Kerr. Dennis brought in a 1904 copy of The Motor mag and a 1938 copy of a Skeates and White catalogue. Mike Courtney wants help with a 1915 Overland and would sell the ex White Sizaire Nauden single. John Morrison has bought the air cooled 1913 Humberette ex Mark Ball. David Oliver has been doing some work on the Model T. David Lane wants the AVVCC to organise a Veteran rally of 4 or 5 nights centred around e.g. Cambridge. Note—David wants to compete, not organise! George Urquhart is still repairing the Model T—Dennis Lowe did the work. Philip Eilenberg, Representing HCCA, offered VCC members a place with HCC if they would like to join them at the Ellerslie Concours in February next year. Doug Hamilton has been working on the 1911 Cadillac and recommends Blue Magic to clean brass and someone else uses incralac, a laquer coating which lasts for years. Grahame Power is still doing minor repairs on the Studebaker. Someone said there is an FN for sale in Napier.

Motorcycle Notes A cool, windy spring afternoon saw just a few bikes in the car park. The number of members in the clubroom was slightly down on the usual, but a lively crew never the less. Visitors—We welcomed John Clark, Roy Dykes and Owen Wexwar. Reports: The Eddie Sim Trophy was run with 11 bikes contesting a well organised course plotted by Mike Batchelor. Winner Graeme Crawley did well considering the discovery of a few broken spokes on arrival back home on his 1958 Ariel Huntmaster. The Daffodil run in aid of Cancer research commenced at the Howick Colonial Village in marginal weather. There were three hardy souls on bikes with approximately 40 cars also taking part. John Campbell reported $1600.00 was raised for this worthy cause. Peter Alderdice reported on John Williams and his adventures when attending the American Antique Motorcycle show held in Sydney recently. A well organised event with tutorial type stands for everyone to acquire greater knowledge on things like motorcycle painting, photography and many other useful skills. Peter then reminded us about the Hunua 100, to be run on the weekend 21st & 22nd October. Historically not many motorcyclists have entered this long standing enjoyable rally so what better chance to enjoy this year’s one as plotted by Peter with a rider view on the actual route. Marshal’s are always required so contact Peter should you be able to assist. On that note, another suggestion raised by Peter was all members may like to think about what they can contribute to our club by helping Martin with his work load as and when required. Graeme Crawley and our Club Captain both endorsed Peter’s suggestion. Coming up: 14th October Motorcycle Meeting speaker—Larry Hill will talk about WW2 fighter aces. 17th-18th November: Auckland Annual Motorcycle Rally—Plotter Tony Vaughan has the routes all sorted and we have booked the Pokeno Hall for Friday nights Pie n mash meal, for the start and finish and also prize-giving dinner. You will find the entry form in this month’s Bulletin, so please make sure you get your entries in as soon as possible. Other Reports: The Ride Forever Motorcycle Show was a magnificent success. Our Branch stand had 36 bikes on it, the largest number for any of the other stands. We were very lucky in getting Bill Buckley putting his 4 Vincents and his 3 racing BSL GP bikes on display. The halls were really buzzing from opening till closing. On both days the bike parks were full. The Papakura Rotary Club will no doubt be really pleased with the money which will go to their various charities. Members Alan & Shaaran Price won 2nd Veteran with their immaculate 1914 Douglas and Tony Miller won 2nd Post 1960 with his 1974 Laverda Jota and John Shennan also got a 2nd place for his lovely BSA. Rubber Duckie results—Don Green reported a much lower entry than usual (35) 10 of which were from Auckland. Fantastic picturesque run of around 104 miles

General Business—Don Green advised Paul Hayes had passed away. Paul was a dedicated Velo rider. Guest Speaker—Rob Lauder took the microphone to tell us of his memorable visit to this year`s IOM TT. The 10-day tour was very well organised by Sports Tour Australia which included free passes to many of the Island’s amenities/VIP lunches, etc. Rob’s presentation was supported with excellent photography from unimaginable track events to the thousands of bikes making their way to the circuit on the ferries etc. The top average lap speed of 134 mph was set by Michael Dunlop in 2016. Notably, Michael also won this year`s Senior TT. Bruce Anstey rode an electric race bike lapping at 117 mph. Rob had a short video of this particular bike literally fizzing around the track. An Australian team took part in riding the Aprilia powered Norton. Rob said the actual tour of the circuit by bus with commentary was well worthwhile as it gave real perspective of the event. Weather-wise it wasn’t great especially for the campers. However, there was much to enjoy apart from the exhilarating motorcycling on the Island such as the vintage railway, the horse drawn trams and the great pub life and of course the hospitality of the Islanders. In conclusion Martin thanked Rob for his time. A short silent film on the Waiheke motorcycle TT from1933 was played. Amazing that they had to ride something like 3hrs over dirt roads. Keep those 2 and 3 wheels turning safely.

Entertainment Notes Thanks to Peter Alderdice, this year’s plotter of both our PV and Hunua Rallies and our speaker at September’s club night. We always want entrants to enjoy events and not feel inadequate in their rally skills, so a brush up on basics is a good thing for us all. It’s super to see greater numbers out and about on our rallies over the last few months and a bumper number for this year’s Hunua would be a fitting reward to Peter’s efforts. An enjoyable night was had at our annual movie night. With a packet of Jaffas in hand we watched the classic Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, with an ice cream at interval as well. Thanks John and Pat Campbell for organising this evening. At our October Club night we will have a short seven minute film presented by Jim McCutcheon on the restoration of his 1923 Model T Roadster – from a box of bits to the complete car including first start up. Also the film documents repairs after an accident which smashed up the front. This will be followed by a 7 minute DVD of Waiheke TT racing back in 1933. See you out and about Russel McAlpine

Commercial Notes Now that the elections are behind us, one wonders whether Northland’s roads will see any of the promised improvement, they have to be among the worst in the country. This year’s Spring Tour, organised by Paul Collins, (North Shore Branch), took us through the scenic Waipoua Forest to Omapere and back again to Dargaville. This road has deteriorated hugely since we travelled over it 30 years ago and I won’t even mention the rear wheel that split apart on the Plymouth. We sure don’t have a lot of luck with wheels. The tour itself was great value though and is thoroughly recommended. John (Jack) Trewheela started out as a Motor Carrier from where he lived in St Benedict’s Street Newton, in the early 1920’s. He had a big powerful White Charabanc in 1923. He was one of the early scenic motor drivers for the tourist trade, often waiting for the ships to come in, parked outside the GPO in lower Queen St and he joins other early bus proprietors, William Iddeson and Robert McRae, in having problems from time to time with booze. The photo is of his Pakeha #2 bus—he had two “Pakeha” buses, both plying the Auckland to Helensville route from 1924 to 1926. Sadly he passed away in late December 1926 at his Newton home aged just 44. An invitation has been extended to anyone owning an old commercial, of any tonnage, to take part in a short procession down Onehunga Mall, on Sunday 5th of November, finishing up at the Onehunga R.S.A., where a crowd of people from the Golden Oldies, Owner Drivers Association will be waiting to view them. This occasion celebrates 100 years since the Onehunga Branch of the Auckland Master Carriers Association was formed on the 1st of November 1917. Library Notes In our July notes we mentioned we had been given a copy of an excellent book written by Alan Meredith on the early history of Talbots in NZ. Alan is a South Islander now living between homes in Melbourne and Queenstown. Both his children have settled in Auckland so today we see a fair bit of Alan. He said he believed the 1903 12 HP De Dion Bouton Peter Croft, in Christchurch, was restoring had come out of Auckland and asked us to assist. Peter had acquired the car from the Queenstown Motor Museum when it was shut, from an owner in Invercargill. The car was well known in Invercargill as the first taxi in town and still had the original body and had never been restored. The car had been on an early Brighton run in Dunedin and on an early Southland Veteran run to Riverton. Alan is presently looking at early South Island motoring and said there is nothing to indicate the car was in Invercargill before 1906. When we looked at early Auckland registration records you could see only one De Dion Bouton registered in Auckland in 1906 and that was imported by Skeates and Bockeart for a Dr Gordon in Mt Eden and we had seen records indicating that car was only 6 HP. Then we discovered in another publication it told us John Chambers had imported a 12 HP De Dion in 1903 and sold it to David Nathan. We found photos of the car both with John Chambers and David Nathan in Auckland. Nathan died in 1905 and it looks like the car was shipped to Invercargill. The 12 HP De Dion was a very expensive car in 1903 and was probably the only one to come into NZ. Almost certainly the same car. Peter Croft or Alan Meredith need to tell the rest of the story. Book donations continue to come in and the Library Team are still trying to catch up with Catalogues. Mid Week Tourers By 10:30am on Wednesday 20 September, with blue skies above the Westgate Car Park, we had a very good turnout of Midweekers ready to be directed on a 90 minute run via Ranui, Henderson Valley, Scenic Drive, Kaurilands, Wood Bay, Green Bay, Blockhouse Bay, Mount Roskill and through the Waterview Tunnel to Cox’s Bay Reserve for a picnic lunch. Because the Waterview Tunnel is up and running, the time for the journey to our Westgate starting point by those in the south, was reduced quite considerably. Most of the participants were regulars and it was nice to see Robin and Ayleen Elliott back with their Porsche. It was a surprise to see Jim Boag in his bright yellow Zephyr Mk1 Convertible. Terry Costello in his Model A coupe had the oldest car. I had included in the instructions a view point on the scenic drive, to stop and take in one of the best views of the upper Waitemata Harbour, City and Rangitoto only to find that it was a little on the hazy side. After lunch there were two options to get to Gordon’s Speedway Museum. Either a 10 minute walk through the park, or to drive to Gordon’s house, which he has lived in most of his life. He has been collecting a great range of exhibits for more than half a century. Judging by the length of time our Club Members spent checking out Gordon’s treasures, I would have to assume they must have enjoyed their visit. Gordon’s most prized exhibit is his #9, the first midget car to win a race at Western Springs. Jack Nazer Thanks to Jack, an ex Western Springs racer himself, for organising this run and special thanks to Gordon McIsaac, (who also participated in Jack’s Buick) for hosting us at his home and museum. Coming Events Wednesday 18 October: Starts from the Drury Service Centre, Southern Motorway 10:00 a.m. for a 10:30 a.m. departure. Our destination will be the Nikau Caves in Waikaretu where there is a good café and very interesting limestone country side. The caves themselves are top class nowadays and well worth visiting. Sunday clothes are not recommended (there are changing rooms in the café complex). Google it if you want more information, but the run will be simple and a little longer than recent ones. Wednesday 15 November: Starts from the Warehouse Carpark, Westgate, 10:00 a.m. for a 10:30 a.m. departure. Murray Firth has organised a run finishing at the renowned Mincher Gardens for lunch (BYO) before those who wish to, go on to a nearby interesting collection of cars and trucks. There is an admission charge to the Gardens, but Murray has negotiated a discounted rate for us of $15.00 per person. That’s good value for one of the most outstanding show piece gardens in NZ. Wednesday 13 December: NB—a week earlier than usual. Starts from the Drury Service Centre, Southern Motorway 10:00 a.m. for a 10:30 a.m. departure. Destination, our usual Christmas BBQ—BYO meat.

Charity Event The photo was taken in Queenstown at the end of the Southern Scooter Challenge, a charity event to raise funds for the NZ Prostate Cancer Society. The 220km ride is for 50cc scooters, which started in Bluff. Rhys Hanna rode the whole way with his wee Vespa never missing a beat - a pretty good achievement, me thinks. He has now done all three major scooter charity events. Along with the Southern Scooter Challenge, Rhys and Jan have participated in the TransAlpine Scooter Challenge and the Central Plateau Scooter Challenge (I took the photo that was in Beaded Wheels at the latter!). The white Vespa on the left-hand side of the photo is my unrestored 1983 Vespa PX200E which I rode from my home in Waihi to the event and back, covering just under 3500kms in ten days. Mine was one of the few larger capacity (in relative terms) machines to participate and both the organisers and participants appreciated my effort to ride to the event. As an aside, before I headed south, I had also helped organise the Tauranga Distinguished Gentleman's Ride - my third year there, having done the same in Auckland the previous year. Ladies Rally Sunday 24 September, this year’s Ladies Rally, dawned very cloudy and also the start of Daylight Saving, but the sun did eventually appear, which made for a nice rally in the countryside. There were twenty-four starters, including five motorcycles, which commenced from Papakura, travelling the out-skirts of Papakura, through the Hunua Gorge, then onto Adrmore, Alfriston and Takanini, where there was a short straight line navigation. Finally turning onto Airfield Road to the finish at King’s Plant Barn for a look around the nursery and refreshment at the Friend of the Farmers Café. My special thanks to our son Philip, who was start & trail car with the help of Glenn Morris. Also thanks to Dudley & Fay Kitson, who were an off course manned check in Papakura and to Jocelyn McAlpine for accompanying me as lead car. Thank you all, I really appreciate your time and help. Thank you also to those who participated in this year’s rally. It is very pleasing to see a good number of our members out driving their pride and joy. 2017 PV, PWV, P60 & P80V Rally This year’s run started at the Clubrooms with a Devonshire Tea and an opportunity to mix n mingle and meet new members. There were 37 vehicles entered, 5PV, 7PWV, 18P60, 3P80 and 4 motorcycles. The British marques were much in prominence with 24 examples ranging from, Vauxhall, MG, Daimler, BMC, Humber and Triumph. Ford, Pontiac, Buick and Dodge and Jeep represented the Yankee manufacturers and European and Japanese brands were also represented. The run headed out to Pine Harbour where entrants were able to view the Pine Harbour Motorsport Museum that houses some famous historic cars and motorcycles. Then along the waterfront at Omana where more than half the field decided to visit a manned check located right under a no exit sign, having been told this road didn’t exist. Lunch was held in the historic Maraetai Community Hall, where one entrant remembers as a child looking through the doors at a movie being shown there years ago when Maraetai was mainly a holiday destination for City and Country folk. After lunch, we experienced the delights of travelling along the foreshore towards Clevedon where the next stop was a visit to Brookby Quarry which is the third largest quarry in the Auckland region and supplies aggregate for construction, roading and concrete plants to support the region’s growth. Entrants were able to drive right up into the quarry and also view the Komatsu Super Dozer D 575. This is one the largest dozers in the world (170 tonne) and is capable of pushing a load of 130 tonnes. It is in retirement having spent it’s working life at the Stockton Coal Mine on the West Coast of the South Island. From there we visited the McNicol Historic homestead in Clevedon, some visited a check point again located under a no exit sign before it was off to see one of two checkpoints on Lockwood Rd Hunua. Some went correctly through Hunua to “turn” left into Lockwood Rd whilst others saw the Lockwood Rd sign to “bear” left into it and were pinged 50 points for stopping at an off-course Marshal. From there the route took on the southernmost suburbs to return to the Clubrooms for more tea and scones. There were no silent checks to look for and entrants were able to travel at their own speed, just occasionally having to nominate what speed they had averaged to that point. 2017 PV, PWV, P60 & P80V Rally Contd.. Many thanks go to the helpers and Marshals on the day, as at times the weather was very challenging with hail and driving rain. In particular, thanks go to Russel & Jocelyn McAlpine, Rodger & Val Ball, Alastair & Karin Moffatt, Glenn & Marion Morris, Martin & Lynda Spicer, Wayne Roberts and Paul Tomlin. I must also acknowledge a big thanks to my wife Judy for providing all the home baking for the morning, afternoon teas and lunches and also to Kanae and Kura at the lunch venue and to Pat Campbell and Dudley and Fay Kitson for all their help at the Clubrooms. I was particularly encouraged by a young couple who turned up at the clubrooms at the end of the event, having found out about the Club and the event on Facebook and came to introduce themselves and look at the cars and clubrooms. Te Kauri Lodge Overnight Stay 28 & 29 October 2017 The Auckland VVCC have booked Te Kauri lodge for the weekend of October 28th/29th. This is an event for all Club members whether on two, three or four wheels, ancient or modern. We will leave from the BP service centre on the Southern motorway at 10:30am. Saturday 28 October, but if you want to leave on the Friday for a longer stay feel free to do so. It is a social weekend with emphasis on catching up with friends and making new ones. Te Kauri Lodge is on the Kawhia Rd, two hours drive from Auckland. The lodge sleeps about 100, has a commercial kitchen, big dining room, a lounge, a games room, a museum and ablution blocks. You need to bring your own bedding/ pillow & towel. We have a back up that can carry stuff for the bike riders. We will self-cater our own food which will be BBQ, hamburgers etc. and BYO. The cost of the weekend will be about $30 a head. Te Kauri Lodge is used for conservation teaching. It is situated on 1100 hectares of DoC reserve with tracks, trails, streams, caves and native bush. The lodge is a brilliant point from which to explore Kawhia Harbour or dig yourself a mineral hot wallow (like Hot Water Beach) when the tide is out and watch the big rollers coming in from the Tasman. There are all-weather bush walks for those who want them. You own the land and paid for the tracks. As the end of October is into daylight saving and ahead of the pre-Christmas social flurry, we can open up on Friday and make a real holiday of it.
