Chairman’s Report Hi everybody and welcome to the November Bulletin, with another busy October for our Branch. Veteran Section: Their meeting was down to around 10 due to other events and members overseas. They decided that the 2019 Veteran run will again start and finish at John Stokes' property. The meeting went well with lively discussions. If you’re into veterans come along to a meeting. Commercial Section: Had another good meeting which recounted the story of the little Bradford van. They also talked about electric cars and the total costs and emissions involved in battery production and replacement power packs, along with the emissions of an EV may well be close to 60% of our internal combustion powered vehicles, or even higher. Motorcycle Section: The guest speaker cancelled so we opened the floor to the members to tell stories from their past, which turned out to be very interesting and funny. Midweek Tourers: They had another good turnout, having lunch in Mercer after they viewed the two old paddle steamer wrecks on the banks of the Waikato and looked over the Mercer Museum. Bulletin Mailing Night: Hunua 100 plotter Rodger Ball gave the assembled members a talk on rally rules and answered questions. Hunua 100 Weekend: Well what a great weekend we had. The Saturday afternoon garden party was very successful and well attended and the sun was shining all day. We had the sausage sizzle, a table full of tasty treats to eat and barman Don Green was rushed off his feet serving the thirsty guests. Up in the barn Shaaran Price had set up a wonderful history of the Hunua 100 which she had spent many months researching and collating information and photos for. Shaaran also had on display some of her needle work collection. Thank you Shaaran for all your work. Also there was a Library Book Sale. A big thank you Shane Price who put on a very good show with his interesting historical bicycle collection. We then had the North Island Club Captain Kaaren Smylie present Russel McAlpine with his 50 year badge and then she presented Jim Francis with his 60 year badge. Jim told us some of his life story with some funny moments recollecting him storing away at various locations a large number of bikes and cars without his wife's knowledge. We then had the Saturday evening dinner this was cooked by Lynda Spicer and Shaaran Price with the help of Shaaran's daughter Angela and grand daughter Zoe getting everything onto the table so guests could have a buffet style meal. The evening went very well and it was much appreciated that members helped to clear up at the end of the night. Sunday morning was dry with sunshine when we assembled for the start of the Hunua 100. Plotter Rodger Ball was very satisfied with the 84 entries and in that number there were 5 motorcycle entries. Lynda Spicer was on duty at 8:00 a.m. at the Off Broadway Theatre with tea, coffee and a selection of home made cakes and biscuits. The rally went over some great Franklin traffic free roads. The BYO lunch stop was at the Mangatawhiri Hall, but as this was the Hunua, the usual sausage sizzle was available which had been ably cooked and served by Shane Price and other family members. After another very good run we finished at the Drury School Hall where Lynda provided another selection of home

Chairman’s Report baked cakes and biscuits for afternoon tea and she was helped in the kitchen by Val Ball. Then it was home, a short rest, shower and off to the prize giving dinner at the Remuera Club. We had just over 100 diners. We had a very good DJ, Nick Logan, playing music from the 50's to the 70's. The dinner was very good, which was followed by the rally prize giving. This took a while as there were 40 place getters receiving their awards. The overall winner was Russel and Jocelyn McAlpine in their 1930 Model A and my BSA and I managed to win the Motorcycle Section. For those who had the energy, they took to the dance floor and danced the night away until 11:30 p.m.. A couple of dance highlights, performed by the Auckland VVCC Branch formation team (ha ha!!) were dancing to the Time Warp and YMCA. So ended a very successful 60th Anniversary Hunua 100. Thank you Rodger and Val and everybody who helped make this event such a good one. Coming Up: The Annual Motorcycle Rally, 16-17 November you still might be able to get your entry into Graeme – (09)524 9255 or 0275 249 255. Then the following week 24-25 November its the Auckland Motorcycle show at the ASB show grounds. This is the largest motorcycle show in NZ. Last year we had 3 and a half halls filled with new, classic, racing, motor-cross and speedway bikes. There was around 875 machines on display. Our Branch had 35 bikes on our stand, the largest club stand, so let’s try and get near that number again this year. Give me a call on (09) 233 6382 or 0274 454 593 to put your bike on our stand. This year there will also be a swap meet in its own hall no 6. Clubs that are taking part in the show will have a free site for members who would like to sell their parts. And finally we have our end of year Gymnic on the 2 nd Dec, all members with their motorcycles, cars and commercial vehicles are welcome. Keep those 2, 3 and 4 wheels turning safely Martin Spicer

Club Captain’s Report Hello to everyone. Wow, what a month October was The Midweek Tourers had another great run through Franklin and before lunch they headed out to see the two steamer wrecks that sit along the Waikato bank around the Mercer area. A good number were in attendance. The Motorcycle Section had their Wet Leg Run, plotted by Brian King and finishing in Maraetai at his home for afternoon tea. It was sad to see only 7 bikes came out for the event. The Veteran section had a smaller turnout of members in October as it unfortunately clashed with a couple of other events. The Motorcycle section had a smaller meeting as well as it ran a week earlier than usual to accommodate the Hunua 100 Garden Party. They had a good meeting, telling stories of their bikes and other experiences. Quite a number of our members ventured to the Feilding swap meet and then onto the Christchurch swap meet. I haven’t caught up if any bargains were found, but I have no doubt that a number of them came back with some good buys. Saturday 20 October was the start of the Hunua 100 60 th Anniversary weekend. And what a weekend we had. Saturday afternoon the garden was set up with tables and chairs and sun umbrellas which a number were more than happy to sit under, as the sun shone down into the garden area. Shaaran Price had over a number of months put together the history of the 60 years of the Hunua 100 which was on display up in the barn. If you haven’t seen this yet, please go and have a look. It will no doubt bring back some happy memories if participated or you no longer rally, and of great interest to newer members of the Branch. Shaaran also had on display a wonderful collection of needlework. Shane Price brought along and displayed an excellent array of historical bicycles. Thanks Shane. As is tradition it is ‘bring a plate to share’ for the afternoon tea party and there was an excellent selection of goodies to tempt everyone. Don Green was kept very busy with serving our subsidised beer and wine. The North Island Club Captain, Kaaren Smylie, presented Russel McAlpine with his 50 year membership badge and Jim Francis with his 60 year award. Congratulations to Russel and Jim on these wonderful achievements. Whilst all this was going on, Shaaran Price and myself were upstairs preparing the evening meal. We had 62 for dinner that night, which was a great success. Everyone helped with getting the tables cleared and tables and chairs put back and of course the massive job of washing up. Thank you to everyone who helped. Sunday morning dawned bright and sunny and saw Glenn and Marion Morris at the start waiting for everyone to arrive. Meanwhile I was over at the Off Broadway Theatre and had set up a morning tea of my home baked goodies, plus tea and coffee. The first vehicle away was 9:30 a.m. and the last one away was just before 11:00 a.m. The BYO lunch stop at Mangatawhiri Hall was the traditional sausage sizzle ably cooked by Shane Price and assisted by other family members. At the end of the rally at the Drury School Hall, the rallyists were again greeted with afternoon tea of more home baked goodies, plus tea and coffee. Everyone had had a wonderful Hunua 100 travelling through the Franklin and North Waikato (used to be Franklin) quiet country roads.

Club Captain’s Report The 60th Anniversary finished with a Prize Giving Dinner and Dance held at the Remuera Club. We invited Kaaren Smylie to present all the prizes. This year we had a DJ, Nick Logan, who was very good, playing the music of our youth, 50s to 70s music. An excellent Prize Giving with the overall winners being Russel and Jocelyn McAlpine. Congratulations to all the section winners and placegetters. My thanks goes to Rodger and Val Ball, plus all the helpers and marshals, who made this 60th Anniversary a hugely successful one and one which we can all be truly proud of. From the Branch’s point of view, we saw numbers in attendance reminiscent of years past. 84 starters, 189 drivers, navigators and passengers, 104 for Prize Giving Dinner. Remember to consult the Coming Events page. Motorcyclists, there will still be time to enter the Annual Motorcycle Rally, this year being based in Orewa. If you haven’t got your entry in yet, then quick, get it is now. There is NO November monthly club run as the following week we have the Gymnic, this year being held at Murray and Penny Firths property in Oratia. See you out and about Lynda Spicer

Motorcycle Notes We had an overcast and damp morning but it had brightened up by the time Lynda, Riley our grandson and I arrived at the Club rooms. There was a much smaller turn out this month, with 5 bikes and 35plus members. We started the meeting with a joke and then went onto reports. Reports: Martin told us about the Mug run and then the Ladies run, on which Don Green was the only motorcycle rider on his 1930 Rudge. We then had Brian King tell us about the Wet Leg run he had plotted. There were 7 bikes on the run and they had a great country ride of around 110 kms that finished at Brian's home. Coming Up: 10th November we have at 4:00 p.m. VIC card applications, so if you have not had your motorcycle/car/commercial put on the clubs register, come along and get it done. Just make sure you bring along the correct sized photos to go with the forms. We will also be having another Health and Safety session in the barn on the use of the equipment there. There might just be time for you to enter the Auckland Annual Motorcycle Rally. Phone Rally Secretary: Graeme Crawley on 0275 249 255. Note date change for the Motorcycle Meeting 24th November. The Auckland Motorcycle Show, is on the 24th and 25th November. Our Branch has been one of the largest in numbers of motorcycles on display at all of the past bike shows, so let’s keep up the tradition this year. Guest Speaker: The speaker I had lined up cancelled, so we had members tell us stories. Martin started the ball rolling. He told us about buying a pair of the new Dunlop TT 100 tyres that had just come on the market after the works Triumph Bonneville of Malcom Uphill won the 1969 production TT at 100mph. Martin's problem was the week old rear tyre had split while a 100 miles from home and how he coped with it to get home. Next up was Brian King who told us about his first bike, a 250 Panther that he bought off his school teacher, says it went like the clappers. Then Graeme Crawley told us about the very rusty Panther ex-fishing bike that he and a mate bought for 10 pounds. Robin Foote told us the very interesting story of how he obtained his 1927 V Twin BSA that had been in his family since new. Ian Bell then told us about his first bike, a BSA C10 that broke its frame on a trip up to Warkworth. He returned home and came back with some tubing and welded it back together again. Nancy Carkeek told us how she met Brian when he was racing his speedway Jap and she became his pusher and eventually his wife. Julian Jones told us biking stories of when he lived in the Midlands of England and of here. Loretta McGarry told us about her DKW Hobby scooter and meeting her husband at Western Springs Speedway when he was racing a midget car. Jon Cooke told us about a man he met in Auckland who has a collection of Aermacchi motorcycles, but his business was selling computerised lamp posts all over the world. There were a few more stories which stopped at 4:00 p.m. in time for afternoon tea. So even

Entertainment Notes Wow, what a great weekend for the Hunua. The Garden Party was held in superb weather, music played in the background, food and beverages were consumed, members admired Shane Price’s amazing collection of vintage cycles and Shaaran Price’s equally amazing needlework display. In the Barn a display of Hunuas gone by was a big draw card and also we had the Book Sale on. I was honoured to receive my 50 year badge alongside Jim Francis who received his 60 year award. Thanks to everyone who helped on the day, particularly our wonderful ladies organising the food, both for the afternoon tea and the yummy dinner. The tone was set and the Sunday rally day was fine, the route scenic and those who danced until midnight felt a little less guilty about those two extra brandy snaps they had for desert. After such a busy weekend it was great just to sit back on club night and reflect on it and share further stories. The nostalgia display was still out for those that missed seeing them. November will see the Thursday ‘clubnight’ on a Saturday, to be held on the afternoon of the 10th. We will have experts on hand to again help members complete those VIC forms and answer any questions in this area. Also on this afternoon, as promised we are having another Barn Machinery Safety demonstration. Remember you need to attend a Health and Safety demonstration before you can use any of the machinery in the barn. Our ‘normal’ club night on the 22nd will be a film night. I will be overseas and I thank John & Pat Campbell for providing the entertainment for this night. They have been involved with amateur movie making for 53 years, beginning with 8mm film, progressing to 8mm video tape and then on to digital tape and now using solid state, hard drive cameras. They have won numerous awards in their Movie Club competitions, particularly with films recording the struggle their physically and mentally handicapped grandson endures. For our November Club night, they will screen a couple of these short films and something from their repertoire of Historic vehicle files - around 45 minutes in total. And then of course supper. Then it is December with the Gymnic on the 2nd and our Christmas Pot Luck Dinner on Thursday 20th. Still lots to look forward to – make the most of the opportunities your Branch offers. Commercial Notes We had the pleasure of the company of long time member John Wolf at our September meeting. The mid week tour had finished at John and Joan Wolf’s Whenuapai property the week before and we had all enjoyed listening to John talk on his love affair with one of the smallest of all commercial vehicles, the humble Bradford. John had several in his stable and his knowledge of the brand was second to none. The Bradford arrived in New Zealand a few years after World War two had ended and really did fill a niche, there was a distinct shortage of all types of commercial vehicles. An uncle of mine bought one of the first three Station Wagons in Auckland. It had one single door across the back, which was far too heavy for the wooden framed vehicle and sagged badly almost from new. This feature was discontinued very quickly in favour of two doors. I had two “Braddys” myself in the sixties and loved them. I also had a Trekka, but that’s for another time.
Some sobering thoughts from the latest F.O.M.C. news flash. In Japan, our main source of vehicle replacements, yearly electric vehicle sales have not yet reached 140,000. So, how long can we expect it to take to convert our nation’s fleet of 4 million vehicles from petrol/diesel to battery power, by importing used Japanese EV’s. Our erstwhile Government wants all vehicles coming into New Zealand by 2035, to be electric. Where will they all come from? And the total costs and emissions involved in battery production and replacement power packs, along with the energy source required to keep them up to par, the emissions of an EV may well be close to 60% of our internal combustion powered vehicles, or even higher!!!

Veteran Notes The October meeting was quite small owing to the Fielding Swap Meet, the HCCNZ's Spring tour and other members being overseas. There were about ten members present. It was decided that the 2019 Veteran Run will again start and finish at 35 Titi Rd Mauku, hopefully the weather will be kind. Alan Meredith spoke about a book he is writing on the History of De Dion Bouton in the South Island. He spoke of the Stone family of Invercargill and their successful De Dion agency, although it would appear some of the Stone family had some questionable business and social practices. Barry Robert spoke of some of the data which John Stewart has donated to our Library. This concerns the De Dion Tricycle, which John had restored a few years ago. Russell Vincent also got historical data from John, concerning his 1905 Cadillac, which John restored and owned for many years. John Morrison related the difficulties of merging left on Auckland’s motorways when you are in “Spaghetti Junction” in a 1913 Humberette with no indicators, no navigator and the hood up. Gavin and Wayne Welch found some of the hills on the recent Ladies Run, a little hard on their Model T's. Gavin produced a fluid cigarette lighter, but probably more vintage or post vintage period. Alan Price reports that no one has stolen his Clement Bayard, it's somewhere in his shed. David Oliver is still working on the Model T timing cover. He has just returned from overseas, as has Kit Maxwell. Mike Loosemore is trial fitting the bonnet on the Hupmobile and Quentin Lawrence has his 1913 Model T truck pretty much complete. It just awaits vinning and upholstery. That's it for October John Stokes

Secretary’s Notes We now have another part time administrator in Head Office. Julie is training up another Julie who will be assisting with general admin in the Christchurch Office. If you haven’t done so, you need to get your subscription paid, the cut-off date for the discount has now gone, so you will need to pay the full amount. I have soft copy entry forms for Wanganui’s Burma Rally in January, alternatively grab one on the clip at the clubrooms. Great to see so many people enjoying the Hunua 100 weekend, for me one word comes to mind – FAMILY. From Russel’s granddaughter Pearl, who was so keen to get up with him when he received his 50 year membership badge; the Price Family, where we saw 3 generations significantly involved in catering, displays on Saturday and rallying on Sunday; catching up with visitors from Australia who spent as much time as I did in and around vintage cars as a child, to the numerous families who had more than one vehicle entered. Thanks to everyone who entered and or came out on Saturday afternoon.

Mid Week Tourers Another bumper attendance last month and the fine day allowed us to venture onto the private farm where two of the last of Roose Shipping Company’s paddle steamers lie on the river bank. The larger one is 195 feet long, was built in Scotland to Caesar Roose’s own design and carried passengers and freight up and down the Waikato river for about 30 years or so before becoming redundant as the roads and rail improved. We then went another kilometre to Mercer town, enjoyed lunch together, those with sammies had a lovely spot behind the Mercer Museum while others patronised the various eateries in the village. One of our cars was seen at the Muddy Waters Pub, which was our original venue for everyone but sadly the licensee there thought we wanted a slap up dinner rather than lunch. After lunch we all gathered again at the Museum where we were treated to a talk and video show of the history of Mercer and in particular the Roose Shipping Company. Plus of course a wander through the museum. A big vote of thanks to young Jo Bieleski who undertook all the plotting and organising for this great day out. The route was great, the scenery greater and the extra efforts that Jo had to make in arranging various contacts and speakers was considerable. We do appreciate it Jo!. And a footnote—Congratulations to Russel McAlpine and Jim Francis who received long service awards at the Hunua garden party and Rodger & Val Ball and their team for a wonderful 60th. Anniversary Hunua Hundred. If you weren’t there, you missed out on a fantastic weekend of motoring and socialising. Coming Events: Wednesday 21 November: Starts from the Warehouse Carpark, Westgate 10:00 a.m. for a 10:30 a.m. departure. Jack Nazer has a run which will finish at the Devonport Museum. They have asked for a gold coin donation, so we will collect $5.00 per car at the start and give them the bulk sum. Correct change please. Wednesday 12 December—Note the earlier date, which will be before the December Bulletin comes out! Starts from the Drury Service Centre, Southern Motorway.10:00 a.m. for a 10:30 a.m. departure. Destination: the Winterbottom property for our usual Christmas BBQ. BYO meat, the rest will be provided. ( A donation box will also be provided). Wednesday 16 January 2019: Starts from The Warehouse car park, Westgate. 10:00 a.m. for a 10:30 a.m. departure. Jack will be taking us to Wenderholm for a picnic. Library Notes It has been a busy month for the Team, getting ready for the Book Sale and sorting the 120 books from the Brian Johnstone collection to get the duplicates included in the Sale. We needed to clear some old stock too, so most of the books were priced at $2 00 and $5 00 and we sold a total of $300 00 on the day. We will keep the “Sale” open for a few weeks more, so call in any Saturday after 4:30 p.m. if you would like to see what we have to offer at bargain prices. Wet Leg Motorcycle Run Sunday 7 October morning dawned with blue skies and sunshine. Lynda, I and our grand kids went up to the BP service centre on the Southern Motorway for the start of the Motorcycle Wet Leg Run. We had seven motorcycles assembled ready to go. There were two Triumphs, a Rudge, a Velocette, a Matchless, and two moderns, a Moto Guzzi and a Triumph. The run was plotted by Brian King who gave a short briefing and then told the customary joke. The riders left at one minute intervals. The route went along Highway 22, then Blackbridge Road, onto Kingseat Road, into Patumahoe and then worked their way over to Paerata, Crown Road, Tuhimata, Runciman and Great South Roads. It was then up to Bombay, from there they headed to Hunua, then onto White, Sky High, Monument Roads and into Clevedon, then North Road down to Duders Beach, travelling along the coast road into Maraetai. The riders covered around 110 kilometres. They finished at Brian's house. Lynda had made scones to go with tea and coffee. We sat down on Brian's deck taking in the fantastic views of Waiheke, Coromandel, Rangitoto and Auckland city. After tea and scones we went down to look at Brian's Matchless and BSA motorcycles. Also taking pride of place was Brian's AJS car, (Alfriston Jaguar Special). Brian built this car to resemble a 1930's Riley. He is a regular competitor at Classic Race meetings. He recently won the Ron Roycroft trophy with the AJS car. The winner of the Wet Leg Run was Ian Bell on his Triumph T100, 2nd was Lloyd Wilson on his Triumph Speed twin, 3rd was Buster Westhill on his Matchless G80 and 4th was Keith Ballagh on his Velocette 500. 60th Hunua 100 Rally Well, what a great weekend to celebrate the 60th Annual Hunua 100. The weather was kind, almost too hot on Saturday afternoon for the Garden Party and rally day was overcast and not too hot. Thank you to all the 84 entrants who participated, either competitively or noncompetitively in cars, commercials and on motorcycles. Thank you to Kaaren Smylie, as National North Island Club Captain, and husband Jim for being part of our celebrations. It was particularly pleasing to see so many “out of town” entrants coming from Wellsford/Warkworth, North Shore, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Eastern Bay of Plenty and Central Hawkes Bay Branches, to say nothing of our two “Guests” coming all the way from Australia (Warren and Rodney Keenan driving Shirley Bovis’ 1928 Ford Model A), plus their mother Gay Goodman coming up from Christchurch. Gay Keenan as many of us knew her was Auckland Branch Secretary prior to me taking the roll on in 1986. Heartfelt thanks also to Marshals: Mike Loosemore, (off course for the completive entrants), Jo Bieleski & Anthony, Gavin Welch & Sophie Zhao, John Campbell & Dudley Kitson (extremely busy off course), John Stokes, Gary McCraith, Jo & Anthony again (on course, but didn’t see anywhere near the number of entrants they should have because of the old upper and lower case trap at “Great South Rd near the finish). Thanks must also be paid to Lynda Spicer for morning and afternoon tea and also to Pat Campbell & Fay Kitson who served tea and coffee at the lunch break. I know thanks have already been paid to Shaaran Price, daughter Angela and Grand-daughter Zoe plus Lynda Spicer for their efforts on the very nice meal on the Saturday evening, but I too want to say many thanks. A very special thank you to Glenn & Marion Morris, who were not only start and trail vehicle, but also “chaser” of competitors who had missed, or misinterpreted instructions. Glenn & Marion also checked the route for the competitive section. Thanks also to my wife, Val. The event left the car park on Elliot St Papakura and ventured into the newest part of Karaka, then out into the country, keeping left for many miles (on one instruction) where silent check AUSTIN was encountered by those who forgot to ignore Jesmond Rd and several forgot to keep left into Burberry where silent check MODEL A should’ve been found. Once on the old Great South Rd, the route beared right into Runciman Rd where Gordon Francis Dr ran off to the right (the overriding instruction was to keep right at this road) where Jo Bieleski & Anthony were, along with silent check AUSTIN. Prior to this , if you didn’t follow Runciman Rd you came upon silent check GRAHAM followed by CHEV to turn you round. Mike Loosemore had several visitors who had gone “left at crossroad” but the right hand leg of this crossroad was actually NO EXIT. From here it was on to Gavin Welch & Sophie Zhao for a time check, then on out to Onewhero and eventually Mercer and Mangatawhiri where the off course marshals were extremely busy. The instruction read acute left, not bear left. After lunch and seeing Gary McCraith, the next instruction read: turn left. Those who did it correctly continued on Lyons Rd and saw silent check FORD. Continuing the route through Paparimu, Ararimu and Drury, not forgetting to keep right at Macwhinney Dr (No Exit) where silent check BUICK was before

The Roberts and Williams families were represented by two generations and three vehicles, whilst the Dewhurst/Winterbottom families had three generations and five vehicles. We can now look forward to the 2019 event being plotted by Russel & Jocelyn McAlpine who challenge you all to come back and take part next year.
