Chairman’s Report The Committee made a very important decision at our last meeting regarding clubroom openings which will effect some members. From the beginning of April, the Clubrooms will only be open on the second and fourth Thursday evenings of each month due to steadily declining patronage. In my opinion, it is unreasonable to expect Committee members to carry out bar duties for 3½ hours or more to serve a very small number of members, which has been the case in more recent times. This decision was not arrived at lightly and we may have to consider discontinuing some Saturday afternoons as well, if patronage continues to decline. On Waitangi weekend, four Auckland vehicles and occupants headed to Whakatane for the Annual EBOP Rally. It was a very enjoyable weekend, with the rally covering some very interesting roads with great scenery. There were about thirty-three entrants on the rally, which was down significantly from the sixty-five entrants the previous year. I spoke with their Chairman for some time and it would appear that their Branch is experiencing some similar issues to ours. The Committee has received letters from four well-intentioned Branch members offering a number of suggestions on how we might improve Branch events and one or two suggestions on how we could implement these. After much discussion, I eventually asked the Committee members if they were prepared to put more time and effort into the organising and running of events. The answer was a resounding no! I then asked the question, “Where should we go from here?” After more discussion it was decided that the authors of these letters should be given the opportunity to form a Sub-Committee, with other Branch members if they so wished, to implement any of the suggestions they have made. Should they take up this challenge, we wish them every success in increasing participation in the monthly Sunday events. This has been the greatest challenge that has faced previous and current committees. Our Club Captain, Shirley Bovis has expressed her willingness to oversee this Sub-Committee and report back to the main Committee. I believe this is a positive move which will hopefully encourage more Branch members to have an input into the type of events they would like to participate in, as well as assisting where necessary to implement them. This would also have the added benefit of alleviating some of the pressure on our already extremely busy Committee. We have had new Branch banners made, to be used at public events that we attend. These were used for the first time at the Galaxy of Cars at Western Springs recently and they looked impressive and eye-catching. Sadly, the turnout from Branch members was disappointing and that is why I believe it is essential to attract new membership. We have also had window cards printed to put under windscreen wipers of vehicles with the object being to let potential new members i.e. people with a classic or older vehicles, know what our club is about and how they can join if interested. We are also currently in the process of updating our website now that the name change proposal has been lost and is behind us. At our November meeting, the Committee decided to create a new position within our Branch. The brief for this new position is to contact new members to encourage them to attend up-and-coming events, as well as answering any

Bob and Debbie Ballantyne have offered their services for this role, which has been given the title of New Members Liaison Officers. Many thanks Bob and Debbie for your willingness to undertake this very important role. The Veteran Rally, which was organised by Stephen and Tracey Winterbottom, was well attended with seventeen vehicles taking part. Following the Veteran Rally was the National Motorcycle Rally, which was held at Waitomo. From what I have heard, it was a huge success. Congratulations to the Motorcycle Section. The Easter Rally is going to be a great weekend. Fundraising so far has been a resounding success. The Branch has recently received generous sponsorship from Vero Insurance via the Vintage Car Club of NZ. In addition, we have also received several other generous contributions. A list of these contributors is on our display board at the clubrooms. Our last fundraiser before Easter is our raffle with the first prize being welding equipment to the value of approximately $1400.00. Club Captain’s Report Hi all - another busy month on the activity calendar, with lots for all to do and see. Car shows of all types are being held in and around Auckland almost every weekend this month. Local and out of town events to give you the opportunity of outings for your vehicles. An impressive number attending most of these. The Glenbrook Railway had an impressive array of vehicles both from our Branch and numerous other branches and one make, classic car clubs on site, complete with advertising banners displaying who they were. I may be biased but think our new flags stood out the best of them all. A positive move on the behalf of your Committee.

Notes from your Secretary
Twelve participants including five of our own members entered for this early-bird rally that is part of the weekend programme of events for the Pukekohe Classic Register Festival. ItIt isis named named the the Red Red Eye Eye Rooster Rooster due due to it’s relatively early Sunday morning start following a night (usually) celebrating the first days racing. This used to get a large turnout of enthusiasts but like many events is struggling to attract reasonable numbers. A great route suited to motorcycles is the order of the day and this one was no exception. The requirement is for a loop rally designed to get back to Pukekohe track in time for the start of the days racing and in this case was a run of 42 miles. We started towards Tuakau and bypassed the township to then head towards Port Waikato, turning off after 6 km to some very nice motorcycling roads around Kaipo Flats as yet ‘un-discovered’ by most participants. It is always gratifying to find a road or two that at least some people have not yet been on and the smile on the faces at the finish-point check-in said it all. There was one hardluck situation when the air ‘went to the top’ on the rear wheel of a very nice MAC Velocette and he had to be rescued by the organizer. Nancy and Brian Carkeek once again came along specially to help at the start and finish making sure everyone was correctly accounted for and timed. A very special thank you goes out to them both for a sterling effort over so many years. On that note, the ‘Green and Carkeek’ team have given notice that this was their last Red Eye Rooster as plotter/organizers having done it for the last 12 years. You are advised to throw your hats in the ring early if you wish to be considered amongst the mad scramble that is bound to take place to organize the next one.

2017 Bert Cuthbertson Rally
Commercial Notes A good turnout of Commercial buffs at our February meeting provided some valuable input into the workings of North East starter motors for me and Murray Firth gave us a rundown on the Haast Rally he and Penny had enjoyed earlier in the month. A concerted effort to “sell” the club to visitors and old car buffs at this year’s Galaxy of Cars, fell a little short of our expectations. We had set up quite an impressive display of advertising, along with our brand new “Tear Drop” banners. Just two punters enquired about joining and one of these had to be reassured that we were not just about Vintage vehicles and his 1965 car would be more than welcome. The longer we exist without the word “Classic” in our name, the harder it is going to be to encourage these kind of people into our midst. One of the awards, went to a club I have never heard of and looking around at the myriad of club’s on display reinforced for me, just what we’re up against. The AVVCC had 10 vehicles on display. I recently embarrassed myself by insisting that Dodge “All Steel Bodies” only saw the light of day in 1929 with the DA model. Someone had told me this years ago. Good old Google has proved that the old adage of “Believe nothing you hear and only half of what you see” is closer to reality than we often realise. Edward G Budd formed the Budd Company in 1912, initially building pressed steel chassis, the company soon began producing all steel bodies and among their first customers were Oakland, with Ford, WillysOverland and Buick having pressed steel panels made. John & Horace Dodge came aboard in 1914 with an order for 5,000 all steel bodies for the company’s new touring car. The 1915 Dodge became an instant hit and by 1916, Budd was building 500 bodies a day for Dodge Brothers at his Philadelphia plant and shipping them to Detroit. In 1928, Dodge began building “Unit Bodied” vehicles, again created by Budd, which consisted of four large units—side, rear, roof and cowl. I guess this is where the misconception arose.
The weekend weather was a combination of sunshine, very strong winds and heavy rain, over night many trees fell and brought down power lines. The weather in Pokeno at 9:30 a.m. was not good so I decided to go in the car and Lynda said she would come along as well. We arrived at the start at Parrs Park, Oratia at 10:30 a.m. There already, was the plotter Alastair Moffat and wife Karin and also Alan and Sharran Price in their 1965 Vauxhall 4/90 and local man Norm Lawrence who came to see us off. We had the briefing at 11:00 a.m. and now there were 10 motorcycles and 3 cars. We headed West up onto the Scenic Drive, through Waitakere Village, stopping at the Gannet Colony at Muriwai. The sun was out but very windy which made the views of the Tasman Sea spectacular. Every one made it there. Karin provided home made waffles and water for us. We set off again and worked our way back East on traffic free roads again, passing through Coatesville and finally finishing at the Riverhead Tavern. For those who have never been there, it is well worth the trip as its a great location on the river with nice gardens and BBQ area's. We were allowed to park the bikes inside on the grass. The place was packed with families having lunch. Alastair had ask if we could use the marquee, which we did. The winner and next years plotter was new member Paul Hunter who rode his 1974 Honda CB 750. Thank you Alastair and Karin for putting on a great run. Martin Spicer

Our National Easter Rally raffle is selling well - tickets for sale at the clubrooms – see advert elsewhere – super prizes with limited tickets giving you good odds to win some welding gear. Make sure you don’t miss out on this one. Jocelyn and I helped out as marshals for the National Motorcycle Rally at Waitomo during February – what a great turn out and the weather played its part for the first couple of days, but wasn’t so super friendly for their Gymkhana day. I am sure they had great fun exploring the area during the “After Rally Days” and look forward to catching up on some of their stories – because there are sure to be plenty. Was wonderful to see such a variety of bikes with their owners and supporters enjoying the opportunity to show them off and ride them over some wonderful Waikato and King Country roads. I was away for our February club night, so many thanks to John Campbell and his super DVD library for providing the entertainment. March club night falls on the first night of the Adele concerts. I am picking it will be crazy around our clubrooms so we will not have a guest speaker and add to the mayhem – the clubrooms will still be open. One date to mark in your diary and your calendars however is Thursday 25th May – Committee members Tracey and Charlotte are going to take us less computer literate people through some easy steps around our Club Web Page and also Facebook Page. Just as we now take for granted the wonderful advancement of the motor car, which our ancestors shuddered over, we must embrace the computer age and dare I say it social media. So come along and listen and ask questions - give yourself a lift into the 21st century, the easy, no pressure way together with mates who are mostly in the same boat. Then share a cuppa and some supper. Look forward to seeing you out and about, whether it be on a rally or at the clubrooms. Motorcycle Notes A warm summer day for our February meeting with 18 bikes in the car park and 60 members present. There were no new members or visitors. Reports Blue smoke and peddles has been and gone for another year, only eleven bikes took part but never the less an enjoyable day. The Bert Cuthbertson Memorial run took place under the guidance of Alistair Moffit. A good 75-mile ride through scenic West Auckland ending up at the ever-popular Riverhead Tavern. The winner was Paul Hunter riding his 1974 Honda 750. Pukekohe Racing Festival went off well this year. The Red Eye Rooster Rally was again held on the Sunday morning organised by Don Green with the help of Brian and Nancy Carkeek. Don Green reported back on the Norton Rally which was held in Southland. Don covered 2100 trouble free miles all up on his Commando, apart from 2 spark plugs and a stretched chain. The rally was well attended with 60 bikes taking part. The only down side was the atrocious weather conditions. Coming Up: March guest speaker, Kevin Grant who has a large bike collection that includes a Britten. The Waikato's Mooloo Meander is scheduled for April 8 th. March 26th Bike run, leaving the Jolly Farmer Drury at 11:00am. Guest Speaker—Peter Alderdice treated us by bringing along his recently restored 1921 Harley Sport Flat Twin. This meticulous restoration was a true sight to behold. No stone was left unturned on this project. Peter went on to give us the full and complete history of the Sport Flat Twin and its specification 600cc Side value, fore and aft cylinders with a bore and stroke of 2.3/4 & 3 inch. It transpired that Peter and Chris North purchased a full trailer load of precious parts from the previous owner and took turns at selecting what they required to build a complete bike. This process could have ended acrimoniously but as Peter mentioned Chris was great to work with. Chris gave him much encouragement, along with his long time compatriot Leo Fowler when faced with seemingly unsurmountable tasks like recreating a petrol tank from nothing. In regards to the bike itself Peter was quite critical about Harleys marketing tactics of the day. Sold as “The most popular motorcycle in the world” was in Peters words B/S. Confirmation of this slight over statement was clearly attributed to its stunningly low compression ratio of 3.75 /1, belting out the equivalent power of 6 horses. Talking of Animals, Peter mentioned that quite a few of these bikes found their way to different parts of the world. He had actually seen a photo of one strapped to the side of an Elephant. Well, one of the quick witted members of the audience remarked rather loudly, ”Couldn’t they fit it in the trunk”? Not deterred by this witticism, Peter went on to tell us about the painting process. His search for the correct Harley green lead him to the giant paint and chemical company Du Point, suppliers of the original paint. While thinking such a request to this highly resourced establishment for such an insignificant enquiry would lead to nothing, it was with great surprise when Resene Auckland phoned him to say his paint was ready to collect. Peter presented to the paint man at Resene and sure enough a full can of Harley green was waiting for him. “What’s the cost then” asked Peter. The paint man told Peter the amount, which he had

Library Notes We have just finished sorting through eight heavy boxes of "The Motor" magazines from the 1960's and 70's—filling gaps and upgrading some that were not in good condition. Autocar and Motor magazines take up two sides of our moving shelves and are now overflowing to a third side. They contain many articles on Road Tests and the latest developments in a new model, so how do you go about finding the stuff that was written about "your" car. First off you can go the hard way and pull out the five or six boxes for that year and go through the magazines one by one. Then repeat for the Autocar (or Motor). Very few know that we also have a series of books put out by Brooklands that reprint lots of these articles and they include many American makes too. We have about 60 of these books starting with Armstrong Siddeley and Austin to Bentley, Buick and Chrysler through to Volkswagen. They are skinny soft cover books filed away in the "Marques" shelves and are well worth a look if you are thinking of buying a car or want info on the car you have Donations continue to come in and an interesting book we received recently is Paine Bros 50 Years Service to the Motoring Public 1919 to 1969. Motorcycle Notes Contd...
Mid Week Tourers With twenty starters and a number of apologies from those who had gone to the Art Deco week in Napier, the Mid-Weekers set off last month for a run to members David and Anthea Adams property near Waiuku. The drive through the hills in the Maiora area is always worthwhile, as is Anthea’s garden and we enjoyed the chance to relax in the shade. The day before, (and the day after), were nowhere near as pleasant. The property, named Ngodevwa, a Tibetan word which translates as “Flower of the Angels” has been developed from bare ground to a rambling English style garden in less than forty years. Anthea is also passionate about her horses and many of us made special friends there. David told us a little of the history of their Sunbeam, which had had a chequered history even during David’s ownership. Trevor Kenworthy was in his newly restored ’47 Ford Pickup, ex Bitumix (what is it about our Club that seems to attract one time Bitumix staff?) and Gary McCraith brought along his beautiful ‘66 Morgan. But then, aren’t all Morgans beautiful? David’s brother Martin Adams had come down in his 2004 Morgan and it certainly had it’s share of admirers. Cedric Pegrum drove his ’38 Chevrolet coupe. Hard to believe that he had urgent open heart surgery late last year. Looking ahead, there are opportunities later this year for those who aspire to it, to help out by organising a mid-weeker. You may have ideas/venues yourself, if not, we still have suggestions for anyone to work on. We are also trying to build up an email list of those members who support these runs as from time to time last minute changes have had to be made, usually due to weather. If you would like to be included please let us know. Note—this is a separate list to the Branch email Tree, administered by Tracey Winterbottom. Coming Events Wednesday 15 March: Starts from the Warehouse Car Park, Westgate 10:00 a.m. for a 10:30 a.m. departure. We’ll have a shortish run to one of the West Coast beaches. BYO everything, including sun screen and insect repellent. April: No Mid-week Tourer’s run. Our Branch is hosting the National Easter Rally and we want to see as many members as possible either entering or volunteering to help. Wednesday 17 May: Starts from the Warehouse car-park, Westgate, 10:00 a.m. for a 10:30 a.m. departure. More details later, but we have in mind a very different, but very interesting destination. All being well it’ll be a short run over all sealed roads.

Peter said he wasn’t expecting such a high price so the paint man asked ”are you a painter” to which Peter replied of course I am, that’s why I need the paint. ”Oh well” said the paint man, we can do you a trade price but you will need to set up an account. So long story short, Peter can now put Painter on his CV. Martin thanked Peter and after a cup of tea every one retired to the parking lot to witness his first ride on his beautifully restored machine.
