Chairman’s Report Hi everybody, well here we are 12 month's on and the AGM has been and gone and I welcome the Committee members for the 2018/2019 year. John Stokes' Veteran section is going well with around 20 turning up for their meeting. The Motorcycle section had another good turn out last month to hear speaker Ray Pratt from Auckland Harley Davidson tell us his story. The Commercial boys, although small in numbers, still have interesting meetings. If you have any interest in Commercials please do think about joining John and his group. The midweek tourers continue to have very good attendances. The combined club run with the North Shore Branch went well. Well that’s it for this month, so keep those 2, 3, and 4 wheels turning safely. Martin Spicer

Club Captain’s Report
Seeking any keen Power Cyclist Paul Furkert, a Wairarapa VCC member, has recently recommissioned a power cycle (Paul’s is a 1936 BSA bicycle driven by a 1951 Trojan Mini Motor (via a friction drive onto the rear wheel)). This machine has a top speed of around 20mph, so isn’t really suitable for going on standard VCC rallies. Paul is looking to get in touch with other owners of power cycles who might be interested in a Power Cycle rally. The idea is to all meet up at a country pub/campground somewhere in the North Island one weekend next summer and do some short (and slow) explorations of the local area on our machines. Owners of other slow bikes (e.g. Mopeds or Veteran/Vintage motorbikes with top speeds of less than 30mph) would also be most welcome. If you have a suitable machine, and would be interested in such a weekend away, please get in touch with Paul (email paul.furkert@xtra.co.nz or phone (06) 379 5355 or text 0204 027 3746). If there is sufficient interest from cycle/ bike owners, the finer details of the rally will be worked out in consultation with all potential participants.

Well, winter certainly has arrived, with some bitterly cold weather and yet more rain. This is my last report before the AGM, which was held on Thursday 28 June. It has been a quiet motoring month for June but there have been opportunities for you all to come out with your vehicles to at least one event. The Mid Week Tourers had another good turnout starting at the Westgate Shopping Centre. The Motorcycle section, finally held their winter Fish n Chip run to Kaiaua on the 17th June (two weeks later than planned as the rain gods didn’t play fair). They had an excellent turnout of 38 starters at the Jolly Farmer, including 5 cars and some members from down the line from Katikati and Paeroa coming up to join them at Kaiaua. A great time was had by all and enjoyed the wonderful fish n chips as well. Sunday 24th June was the combined North Shore and Auckland Branch run. It was a drizzly day and a few heavy showers were encountered. However 10 Auckland members ventured to Westgate Shopping Centre for the start of a run of about 40ks around the back roads and then through to Albany to finish at North Shore’s Clubrooms. Many thanks to the North Shore Branch for hosting this years event and we look forward to hosting the 2019 event. It is pleasing to see continued good numbers attending John Stokes’ Veteran section meetings. Last month, the Motorcycle section guest speaker was Ray Pratt from Auckland Harley Davidson, now based in Mt Wellington. As usual, Ray was very entertaining and gracious with his time and he advises that he has bought a couple of “old” Harleys and is looking forward to coming out with the Motorcycle section shortly. By the time you read this the AGM will have been and gone. Sadly John and Pat Campbell have made the decision to retire from Committee life. They have both served our Branch on the Committee for many, many years. John will continue to lead the Commercial section monthly meetings, so if you have a Commercial or an interest in commercial vehicles, do go along and support this section. Pat will continue, along with Fay Kitson and Barbara Allbon, to be your supper hosts at monthly meetings. Thank you John and Pat for your long service on the Committee. We also say goodbye to Colin Bell on Committee and again many thanks to Colin for his commitment to the Branch over the past several years.

Club Captain’s Report Contd... I am sad to say that no-one has stepped forward to plot the National Daffodil Day Run, despite me asking in my last two months reports and there being an advert in last months Bulletin for a volunteer or two. This maybe the time to remind you that this is your Branch and you get out what you put in. I have already plotted 4 monthly runs this past 12 months and it looks likely that I’ll be plotting July as well. It would be nice to think that one or two of you would step forward to plot the August run as I am sure that you all know someone who has suffered with Cancer. It is a chance to raise awareness of our Club, but more importantly monies for this very worthwhile charity. I look forward to receiving your calls. The July club run is on Sunday 29 July and will leave the BP Service Centre on the Southern Motorway at 11:00 a.m. Congratulations to all the winners of June’s events.

Bill Shears Memorial Trophy—Awarded to Barry Birchall Royce Shears & grandson’s with Barry Birchall
There were very few new (to us) books that came in last month, so like the fisherman, I will tell you about the ones that got away. We saw an interesting book on Trade Me titled “Motor Cycles, Side Cars and Cyclecars” printed 1915 by Page. We watched it sell at $150 which was $50 more than we had set and a copy of Automobile Year Volume 3 1955 sold when we pulled out at $132.00. We have a run of these books up to No.34, but need No.1 (titled Annual Automobile Review) and No.3 to complete it. Trade Me and Hard to Find Books in Onehunga are the only places we buy from and it is sad to hear that HTF have closed Onehunga and moved to 2/8 St Benedicts St (off Newton Rd) where it is hard to stop for half an hour. Their new phone number is 368 4898. Meantime from Keith Howse, formally of Downtown Service Station, we were given: Automotive Emission Control by Crouse Rotary Engine Manual by Toyo Kogy (We filed it with RX7 Mazda) 1980 Hunter Range Workshop Manual.

Then saving the best for last, we have been given a scanned copy of Veteran Rover catalogues from 1904 to 1910, together with copies of Autocar reports and a 1910 article from The Automobile Engineer. 2018 Trophy Awards at AGM
Motorcycle Notes We had a sunny afternoon for the June meeting, which brought out 16 bikes and around 50 members. We had a minutes silence to remember the passing of long time member John Penman. Visitors—Bruce Anderson brought along Colin Reddings who was his and son Malcolm's race bike mechanic for many years. Colin took away membership forms. Reports: Peter Alderdice and John Shennan reported on the recent Northland Motorcycle Rally which was a really good one this year. The weather was perfect and the rally route was excellent, as was the lunch in Dargaville and the prize giving dinner. Peter also told us about his and Leo's trip down to the South Island's Irishman rally, where they used the 1926 Oakland. After the rally they drove the Oakland back to Auckland and Peter said that they used $1000.00 of petrol. Coming Up: Sunday 15 July—Kick Start Rally plotted by John Poole. We shall be leaving at 11:00 a.m. from the Homestead Cafe next to The Howick Historical Village, Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga. The run will be over some great motorcycling roads. Saturday 21 July—Motorcycle Meeting guest speaker will be motorcycle racer and co owner of Pro Rider, Paul Pavletich. Paul was a top racer from the early 80's and is still racing. Paul has now won 14 Auckland Motorcycle Club Championships and 4 car series titles. General Business Member Robin Foote has bought all of Norm Maddock’s stock of Amal carburettors and will soon start offering his services for repairs and parts. Keep a look out for more information. Co-ordinator Election—Martin was re-elected. Guest Speaker—Ray Pratt was 14 when he and a friend bought up a large collection of Ariel spares from a shut down motorcycle shop. There was such a lot of parts, Ray asked his grandmother if they could have the use of the 2 very large and empty green houses on her property and so Ray's business started. Next he rented some factory space in Mt Roskill to sell parts. He then worked for Roskill Motorcycles. He and a mate started speedway racing, riding JAP powered bikes. They then took up sidecar speedway, using a BSA Gold Star, which was replaced by a much faster Vincent and they won many races. When Whites of Newmarket closed, Ray bought all their Triumph spares. Ray then started selling new Triumph’s from a shop in New Lynn. The next big move was to Khyber Pass. They now also sold Motor Guzzi, KTM, and Harley Davidson. The next move was to Mt Wellington but now they were solely selling Harley Davidson's. The business is booming and 18 months ago Ray opened a new shop in Barry's Point Road which his son Greg is in charge of. Ray's work force is around 35 now, a long way from that 14 year old's start in the motorcycle world. Well Ray, you have certainly lived up to the saying if any one can, a Kiwi can”. Ray and Greg are also at the top of their class in drag racing.

Entertainment Notes The AGM was held on our usual June club night. There were around 65 members in attendance out of an Auckland membership of 665. Re-elected were Martin Spicer Chairman, Russel McAlpine Vice-Chairman, Tracey Winterbottom Secretary, Ian Hubbard Treasurer, Lynda Spicer Club Captain, Committee members John Stokes and Don Green and then things stalled. The Branch should be extremely grateful that Alf Williams and Alan & Shaaran Price put up their hands again to help out. However, Alf has since advised he is unable to take his position on the Committee leaving us two members short. It is indeed a sad thing that the same people continue to keep your Branch ticking along. Remember you don’t have to be a Committee member to contribute. Have a chat to Lynda if you wish to help out with a club run, or any other Committee member to see where you can help – no offer is too small. Looking ahead to this month’s club night on Thursday 26 th, we are lucky to have our North Island Club Captain Kaaren Smylie coming along to give us a talk on all things happening on the wider car club front. Come along and get first-hand information on coming events and happenings. And this is what is happening on August Club night:- Ever wondered what, if anything was happening here at the Lincoln Rd interchange? Volunteers and paid contractors have been working here since 2002, when the SS TOROA, last of the Albatross class ferries with original steam propulsion machinery intact, was hauled out from Henderson Creek. This was probably the largest vessel to be taken out of the water anywhere other than on a commercial slipway in Australasia. A talk on the restoration of this Auckland icon, launched in St Mary’s Bay in 1925, will be given by Toroa Preservation Society members on club night August 23rd. Russel McAlpine

Kaiaua Fish N Chip Run Well after cancelling the run on the 3rd of June due to heavy rain, and then the mistake by 18 members who turned up the following weekend thinking that the run was on then, then on the night before the run took place, in Pokeno we had one of the longest and loudest nights of rain, thunder and lightning (3hrs) we have experienced, it was great to wake up on Sunday morning to a sunny day. Lynda and I plus our 2 grandchildren arrived at the Jolly Farmer to find 35 motorcycles and 6 cars - a mixture of modern and club motorcycles. Buster Westhill had come from Orewa with a number of his Jampot guys. We had 5 girder fork motorcycles taking part, (Ariel, BSA, Velocette and Vincent). The run to Kaiaua was traffic free. Waiting for us there were members Paul Whitehead from Katikati, Peter and Robyn Levet from Paeroa and Kelvin and Jacky Mitchel from Ngatea. It was great catching up with old friends and meeting some new ones who had come along for the first time. Also parked up were around 35 + members of the Hamilton and Bay of Plenty Harley Davidson Owners Club.
We were the last to leave the Fish N Chip shop at 2:30pm and so ended another “world famous” Kaiaua Fish N Chip run. Martin and Lynda Spicer

Commercial Notes I guess it will feel a little strange, for a while anyway, not attending Committee meetings and sharing in the day to day running of the Branch. Pat and I will still be having some input. She, with the help of Barbara Allbon & Fay Kitson will “mind” the kitchen and provide club night suppers and I will still lead the charge of Commercial aficionados and a few other tasks, just enough to stop us from realising our age. Every organisation/club we have ever become involved with has seen us in an administrative role and we wouldn’t have had it any other way. It’s very true, you only get out, what you are prepared to put in. The latest edition of Wheel Torque, the FOMC newsletter has once again brought to our attention, the obsession central government has with reducing carbon emissions. The draft game plan, prepared by the Productivity Commission to transform New Zealand into a low emissions economy and the threat it poses to classic motoring, was a central topic of discussion at the FOMC National Conference and AGM, held in our clubrooms in May. To achieve the objective of net zero carbon emissions by 2050, the Commission is proposing to convert our transport fleet to all electric and phase out fossil fuels, which would put most heritage vehicles amongst the targets proposed for elimination. Also in the Commission’s report is the confirmation that the manufacture of Lithium Ion batteries, does generate much higher CO2 emissions than building and using fossil fuelled vehicles. After having the Chinese copy (bought brand new) of the well respected VH 44 brake booster reconditioned recently, Pat and I set off with Fay & Dudley Kitson as passengers on the Combined Run on Sunday 24th of June. This is how we came home. Now back to the drawing board!!!

Ryder Cinema
Veteran Notes Some twenty members attended the June section meeting with apologies from Wellsford's Grant Stott and our Anthony Barnes. Russell Vincent has put a new clutch in his 1905 Cadillac Single and Bryan Belcher has worked on a mudguard stay for the 1913 Overland. David Oliver has got the camshaft for his Model T fitted and is now working on the advance retard mechanism. Michael Pellow and George Ratcliffe had their 1905 Rover Single Cylinder at a Rover Club display in The Cloud on Auckland's waterfront. David Lane displayed the tail lamp mentioned last month and it certainly appears in prime condition with the treatment he described. Mike Loosemore is making significant progress with the 1916 Model N Hupmobile, most panelling is done and he's sorting out the bonnet alignment, which is the next job. Barry Birchall has returned from back blocks Indonesia, which he said was an eye opener. It was good to see both Gavin and Wayne Welch in attendance. There was a bit more discussion on the type of Veteran events we run. Some expressed the wish for fresh territory, while others wanted somewhere to run very old, say 115 year old plus vehicles, this isn't easy to satisfy even in the two to ten acre ‘lala’ lands that surround Auckland. By the time you read this the AGM will have come and gone, so the section will continue to make progress. John Stokes
The July Midweek Tourer’s run is going to Ryders Cinema in Avondale for a cooked lunch and film. Jack Ryder brought the three acre property off his Mum about 1950 for one hundred pounds. Jack started collecting demolition material and wanted to create a small village like we see today at Howick. He built an old hotel alongside his house and fitted it out with material that had been removed from old hotels all over city. Upstairs he had a massive sporting collection. Behind the hotel there was beautiful old toilet block he had created, again using demolition material. He went on to create a service station, fire station, railway station, stables, tram barn, ships cabin, signal box and finally the picture theatre. Jack had great visions of running a steam train to his front gate. The front gates had come off the Auckland wharf. In the sixties he entertained Royalty, a Governor General and several Prime Ministers. The grounds always looked a treat then, as his wife was a keen gardener. It was almost too much for one man and the project never did get finished. In every building there were unfinished projects. The horse drawn equipment which sat under the tree for many years, have rotted away. The old tram barn did come down and the tram is now running in Wanganui. The picture theatre, restaurant and toilets were put up by son John on that site. The 1916 Dennis fire engine was sold to MOTAT and the engine shed was converted into an old service station complete with Model T Ford breakdown truck. The Steam engine (A62) which used to run between Piha and Whatipu is now in the Craw collection. The carriage and fell wagon is now at MOTAT and the railway station has been converted into a flat for grandson Clint. John Pauling in Blenheim finished up with one Model T Ford and the second one went to Hamilton. The horse drawn bus that once went between Pitt Street and Blockhouse Bay is now at Howick and the 1935 Studebaker bus is now in Wanganui. The property over the years has changed, but there is still a lot of interest there. Grandson Clint now runs the restaurant and picture theatre and it is very popular. Between May and December there is a group there almost every day. I first meet Jack about 1967 and I was amazed he had collected so much stuff when he did not drive a car—all built from demolition material. Jack had a great eye for small detail. Still one of the best collection of signs, oil bottles, old petrol pumps and old buildings in Auckland. Not to be missed. Barry Birchall

Mid Week Tourers Last month’s run started on a pretty dismal sort of day, grey skies, cold and showery. About 15 cars at the start, with several more joining us at Gulf Harbour. Included at the start were Bruce & Trish Pitcher and John & Mary Castle, all from the North Shore, plus John and Terry, Trevor and John, guests from the Early Ford V/8 Club, in a ’36 sedan and a ’37 coupe. Plotter Don Johnson is also a member of that Club. We welcome as guests all who enjoy their heritage motoring and it was a joy to view their beautiful cars. Our route was, as is our custom, over lesser used roads where possible and this time the short portion of unsealed road had been cut up a bit by the winter weather. Still, mud cleans off easier than dust and the pot holes are easily avoided at our speeds. Many of us had not been to Gulf Harbour before and the variety and sheer number of the boats there certainly took our attention. Right at the far end was our destination, and the sun stayed out to allow us to view the scores of snapper, kahawai, and parore which gather at a spot where they are regularly fed. No stingrays or kingfish, it seems they heard about us and stayed away! Perhaps another day. Thank you Don, for arranging this for us. Wednesday 11 July: Too late, you’ve missed it! It was early this month. Wednesday August 15: Starts from the Drury Service Centre, Southern Motorway 10:00 a.m. for a 10:30 a.m. departure. John Cheale is organising this run to a collection of model trains in South Auckland. Wet or fine. BYO lunch and chairs, but hot water etc. will be available. Wednesday 19 September: Starts from the Warehouse Carpark, Westgate 10:00 a.m. for a 10:30 a.m. departure. Kelvin Hawke has offered to organise this one.

2018 Irishman Rally This year’s rally started for us on 9th May when Betsy, our 1926 Oakland Tourer was driven to the Auckland Wharf to await loading onto the Dream Orchid for shipment to Lyttleton. Nephew Les Alsop picked her up and stored at his place until we arrived on Thursday 31May. This year’s rally started at Oamaru and the trip down was in fine weather and trouble free. Hardly even had time for the usual rest and green ginger wine, although lunch at the St Andrew’s tavern could have turned into a session if common sense hadn’t turn up. We travelled with a group of Canterbury Branch motorcyclists who have discovered the dark side and purchased vintage cars. An early start on Saturday morning at the Farmers Market carpark in the historic district saw the gathering of 163 vintage cars, with around 430 people associated with the event. We were farewelled by the Mayor and made our way down the coast towards Kakanui on a bright clear cloudless morning. What a sight with the sun sparkling on gently breaking waves. Our inner calm was challenged not far from the coast with the first river crossing in the Kakanui Valley. Lack of rain in the days before meant only a modest challenge for the field and hardly anyone opted for the by-pass. The rally route, which was extremely well plotted, took us onto Tapui Homestead station where the instructions suggested chains be fitted, but again as rain had been absent, the field climbed a steep grassed farm paddock without difficulty. There was another river crossing and a steep grassed climb on Lomond farm before lunch was enjoyed at the Kurow Memorial Hall. The locals served a full roast with choice of three meats and lots of vegies, for a mob of over 400, well done. The morning section was about 85 miles. The post lunch run was one of the most spectacular vistas we had ever experienced on any vintage event. The route took us through the Hakataramea Pass towards Tekapo. We were well into the clouds and as the temperature was reported to be minus 10, the cloud had frozen resulting in a hoar frost. All the trees, Matagouri, fences, wires were covered in frost, looked really picture postcard. We managed to warm up at the Kimbell pub before heading to our accommodation. The evening meal was enjoyed with friends at the Gladstone Hotel in Fairlie. Another early start on Sunday, again over 160 pre 1931 vehicles setting off from Fairlie, to a morning of around 90 miles of motoring mainly on shingle roads. The highlight of the morning was a visit to a private homestead, Blue Cliff Station, built in 1869 and still lived in by the same family who generously allowed the huge crowd to visit downstairs of the house and see the furnishings, crockery and cutlery that was bought from England not long after the house was completed. The 4000-hectare property has its own airstrip and most took the challenge of traversing farm tracks and river crossings to climb up there. After another great cooked lunch at the Fairlie hall, the afternoon was, as tradition dictates, spent at Pete’s Patch watching those more competitive vehicles attempt the grass gymkhana whilst sharing experiences of the weekend with old friends.

The prize giving went down well. The organisers had provided 10 entrants with drinking mugs and were told they must be at the evening function. Our entry was one of the chosen few, and when it came time to line up with the other recipients of the mugs, we were all pretty sure that one of us was to be selected as the winner. But no, they just created a lot of anxiety and we were told to go and sit down as we were all safe. The runner up and winner were then announced, what a laugh!! Next morning (holiday Monday) we set off for home, dropped Bruce at the airport and Leo and Pete carried on north though Kaikoura and made it to Picton, although traveling the last hour at night is not to be recommended in driving rain in an open car. The ferry crossing next morning saw our first mechanical challenge. Betsy refused to proceed onto the rail deck of the Aratere and stopped on the ramp. Fortunately, three wharf employees and Leo pushed her onto the ship and after berthing in Wellington, she started and we quickly discovered a blocked air filter had caused her to haemorrhage fuel at Picton. We stayed the night at Bulls and drove the next day via Whanganui, Raetihi, Taumarunui, home to Auckland and as it was Wednesday, attended shed night. All up we drove just over 1250 miles. This was a fabulous event and at the Betsy syndicate meeting held at the rally conclusion we all reckoned we’ll be back next year.
