Chairman’s Report Hi every one, Martin Spicer here, your new Chairman. Firstly, I would like to thank the retiring members of the outgoing Committee, Glenn Morris, Shirley and Charlotte Bovis and a huge thank you to Rodger Ball who must surely go down in the Clubs records as the longest serving Secretary ever, at 31 years, well done Rodger. Thanks too, to Colin Bell Chairman for the past 2 years. Now a warm welcome to the incoming committee: Vice Chairman and Entertainment: Russel McAlpine . Secretary: Tracey Winterbottom Treasurer: Ian Hubbard . Commercial Rep/Clubroom Bookings: John Campbell . Motorcycle Rep: Martin Spicer Veteran Rep/Beaded Wheels Reporter/Spares: John Stokes Social conveyor: Pat Campbell And three new Committee members are: Lynda Spicer, Don Green and Len Harvey. We were unable to secure a volunteer for the position of Club Captain at the AGM, a pity because it is not the onerous position some would see it. Many years ago the Club Captain was expected to plot all of the Branch events, other than those calendar events, for which the plotter is pre-determined. Today most of this work is shared among other volunteers and the job is more or less one of supervision. If there is anyone out there who feels that they would be able to help the Branch out, I would implore them to give me a call. My wife Lynda and I joined the Branch in 1990. Our only club eligible vehicle then, was the 1960 BSA Golden Flash motorcycle that I had bought in London in 1964 as a 16 year old. I have been riding it continually ever since, with Lynda riding pillion until 10 years ago. My other bikes are 1957 BSA Bantam D3, 1986 Honda CBX 550 F2 and our cars are – 1939 Morris 14/6 , 1963 Hillman Minx series 5, 1983 Citroen GS Club. In 1998, together with Colin Tomkins, I took over coordinating the Motorcycle Section. Colin retired in 2000 and 19 years on I’m still in the driver’s seat. When you see me at the club rooms, or out on a run or rally, come and say hello, if I don’t know you already, I’d like to!!

Outgoing Club Captains Report Well here I am again, said last month it would be my last report, unfortunately none of the members present at the AGM wished to be our next Club Captain. But don’t be shy there is still time to step up if you think you would like to give it a go, can be a very rewarding position. The first event for the new term was our Annual Combined rally held on Sunday 25 June with our neighbours from North Shore Branch. An impressive twenty vehicles lined up at the start in Westgate, sent on their way by Charlotte, Peter and wee Kea to travel mostly rural roads to head across town taking in spectacular views as they traversed the roads. After passing through Blockhouse Bay they dropped down the hill to skirt along the Manukau Harbour into Onehunga over the ridge again to finish in Penrose for afternoon tea and fellowship. Thank you to Charlotte, Peter and Kea for starter duties, Alan Roberts who assisted myself with lead car and placing of silent checks, Pam & Colin Bell, Pat & John Campbell for doing the tea and coffee and clean up at the end of the afternoon. Last but by no means least thank you to all those who came along to enjoy your Branch activities helping to make all the efforts a worthwhile exercise,. We look forward to your continuing support. Veteran Notes The section meeting had twenty nine people present, which is the biggest turn out so far. Don Green rode his 1916 Triumph to the meeting despite dubious looking weather and Robin Foote arrived by BSA as usual. We had apologies from Murray Grieg and Ian Hamilton. Visitors were Tim Edney and Len Woodgate from North Shore, and Grant Stott from Wellsford and Dave Lane from Waitemata. Quentin Lawrence spoke of his Model T restorations, including one he had owned since he was about sixteen. A number of veteran owners attended the D Day commemoration held at Ardmore airfield. Gary Bax and Murray Atkinson are working on brake brackets for the 1914 Saxon and Denis Lowe produced some hood irons he has had cast for his 1903 Curved Dash Olds. George Ratcliff and Michael Pellow are working out whether their single cylinder Rover could be London Brighton eligible. Mike Loosemore is still progressing on the 1916 Hupmobile which now has brakes, some panel work is underway. Tim Edney has solved a problem with his 1906 Alldays and Onions, which is kept in Arrowtown, the kill switch was faulty. Dave Lane is using his Model T speedster as much as he can. Alan Meredith spoke about his book on early Talbots in New Zealand and there is now a copy in our Library. The performance of the cars in the recent Parliamentary Tour would indicate, that this distance would take two and a half hours at an average of 25 mph. Commercial Notes Another AGM is behind us and although we are without a Club Captain at the moment, we are in good heart with four new Committee members. From the 95 persons present though, we struggled a bit to achieve this and none of those so opposed to last year’s proposed name change were upstanding. In the April Bulletin, I made mention of a strange tool I had unearthed at home during a clean up. Only the man upstairs knows where it came from and not one of the section knew what it was. Hans Dorbeck took it off to a meeting of his Tool Club and has told me it is a hand operated “Impact Drill”, so there!! Long time member, Ian Jenner has after six years, completed restoration on his second White truck (left in picture). This one, like his first, was converted into a bush jigger in the 1950’s and now keeps company with his first one at the Pukemiro Bush Tramway. The Jigger was used on the Pukemiro line after the Mamaku forest tramway closed down around 1972, until it developed a fault and was parked on a siding there, to slowly rot away. The cab is from a 30 cwt Bedford, as was the original. You can see from the second picture, Ian didn’t start with a lot.
The Pukemiro Bush Tramway has an open day on the first Sunday of each month from April to December. It would be great to see these interesting vehicles for real, so mark Sunday the 6th of August on your calendars, for a trip to Pukemiro, weather dependant of course. More details next month. Mid Week Tourers A combination of various circumstance mean a shorter report than usual. The third Wednesday last month fell on the 21st, the closing date for the Bulletin was four days later and I was stricken with the dreaded lurgy, (and am not out of the woods yet). First, congratulations to our new Branch committee members. All are to be commended for making themselves available and we all look forward to continued growth and activities to enjoy. Sincere thanks to those who chose to stand down, after valued service ranging from thirty six years right down to one. The length of service, whilst so very creditable in our Rodger’s case, is not the only criteria for committee. Hard work, a passion for Historic vehicles and a genuine desire to see our Branch prosper are essentials and we have always been well served over the year. Now, the run. A big thank you to Alf Williams who stepped in at short notice to see everyone safely on their way and to check that all made it to the finish OK. There were 34 starters, mostly from our regular “pool”, but I see one Chris Good riding a Velocette MAC. If you are new Chris, welcome, if not then blame my fuzzy head. To go from Drury to Mangere can mean a lot of congested housing and/or commercial areas full of traffic lights but the route avoided these by going right through one of the most densely trafficked parts of Auckland, the Airport! A bonus was driving through the historic Stonefields area, part of which is soon to be desecrated by more housing – why ?, I must ask! Parking at the finish was hampered somewhat by recently installed concrete “sleeper” like barriers, said to be for a cycle lane, but no signs or road marking and therefore a complete waste of money to motorists and cyclists alike! Having been born and raised in Mangere myself, I have known Brian Belcher “forever” and have always considered him to be one of life’s gentlemen. He and Dorothy certainly proved this again with their hospitality and we do extend a vote of thanks to them for hosting us once again. Coming Events Wednesday 19 July (School Holidays): Starts from The Warehouse car park, Westgate, 10:00 a.m. for a 10:30 a.m. departure. Murray & Penny Firth are organising this run. Our destination is the home of Dion Coleman, on the Whangaparoa Peninsula, where we will be shown his large collection of automobilia and have lunch (BYO), then Dion will take us to his nearby workshop where he specialises in classic engine reconditioning. Wednesday 16 August: Starts from the Drury Service Centre, Southern Motorway 10:00 a.m. for a 10:30 a.m. departure. Barry Birchall is taking us on a run to visit a member’s magnificent home, motorhouse and outstanding collection of cars and automobilia. BYO lunch, cuppa etc. will be provided. An opportunity not to be missed! Wednesday 20 September: Starts from The Warehouse Carpark Westgate, 10:00 a.m. for a 10:30 a.m. departure. No further details as yet. Motorcycle Notes A sunny afternoon brought out 18 bikes and 70 members to our meeting. VISITORS – We welcomed Eric Drabble, Colin Scott and Laurie Loveday, they all took away membership forms. Reports John Shennan reported on the Northland motorcycle rally, see full report elsewhere in Bulletin. Martin reported on the Kaiaua fish n chip run, again see full report elsewhere Bulletin. Peter Alderdice reported on the recent Irisman rally. General Business: Peter Alderdice showed us the products he is selling for fuel tank sealer and a range of reflective glass dots. David Broadhead told us about Tools for Fiji. If you have any old hand tools for wood work or electric hand tools, doesn’t matter if they don't work they have people that work in The Mens shed that repair them. Coming Up: Saturday 15 July—Motorcycle Meeting, speaker is Brian King with his AJS car. Guest Speakers—Noel Howe and Brigid Woodcock. Two years ago Noel and Brigid arrived in the UK for their 6 month bike tour of Europe. They bought a 650 Suzuki V Strom and set off around the UK taking in the IOM TT as well. They then set off for Europe travelling through France and Spain and then across the Mediterranean to Morocco. This country is steeped in history going back to pre Roman times, the country has many Roman ruins. The roads are mainly sealed with a few metal ones. The towns of note were Marrakesh, Casablanca, Sale, Rabat and Algiers. They had a great ride over the Atlas mountains and they found the people very friendly and helpful. They spoke a mixture of French, Arabic and English. They stayed in hotels mainly so they could have a swim at the end of a long hot ride and nearly always they were the only ones in the pool. There were some magnificent beaches along the coast but they were mainly empty. They didn't see any troubles anywhere they went. Noel showed a continuous slide show of the places they had visited right to the end of his talk. They headed back to England with some 26,000 miles clocked up and the only problems with the bike was an electrical fault that Noel fixed. Martin thanked Noel and Brigid. Entertainment Notes June Club night was our AGM and although it was great to see a full clubrooms, it was disappointing that we did not manage to fill the position of Club Captain and were one committee member short, until after the meeting. Congratulations to those who won new positions -Martin Spicer Chairman, Tracey Winterbottom Secretary, Ian Hubbard Treasurer and committee members Lynda Spicer, Len Harvey and Don Green. I am again Vice-Chairman and present committee members John Campbell, Pat Campbell and John Stokes, plus Colin Bell as immediate past Chairman make up the balance of the team. We farewelled Rodger Ball from his position as Secretary of the club – a task he has done for 31 years! A big thanks too to his wife Val for her support over this time and continuing to be our Bulletin Editor. Colin Bell stepped down as Chairman, as did Glenn Morris Treasurer and Shirley Bovis Club Captain and committee member Charlotte Bovis. Thanks to you all for your great support for the Branch. We have an extra July club night which will actually be on Saturday afternoon starting at 2pm on the 22nd– how can we help you get your “VIC” on your vehicle. I know there are many of you out there, either unaware that you need a VIC to enter National Rallies or there are those of you whose VICs have expired and then those of you who have just parked it in the too hard basket. Come along on the 22nd from 2pm onwards – bring your vehicle if you wish, plus ownership papers, 3 x identical colour photos 90 x 130, showing three quarter view from the front of the vehicle or one side on a motorcycle and any other provenance papers. We will provide the expertise, the forms and afternoon tea and get you sorted. Library Notes Last month the Library was given two tickets to the Premier of the film McLaren. We had loaned The General Film Corp our Grand Prix Ardmore films and these contributed in a small way to help them make the wonderful documentary on the life of Bruce Mclaren and the unique Team of New Zealand Racing Car builders and Drivers Bruce got together in the UK to form McLaren Racing. We recommend you to see this great film. During the last month we purchased Antony Blight's book "Georges Roesch and The Invincible Talbot " and we were given a first issue copy of "The Early Talbot in New Zealand" by Alan Meredith. This is a lifetime collection of NZ car photos, many of them taken from glass negatives and includes stories of the people that owned and drove them in the early days of South Island Motoring. The first book deals with Roesch' designs in 1935-39 and the other of 1905-15 so they have only the name in common but just happened to come to us in the same week. Thank you Alan. We also purchased Holden -Great years Great Cars 1968 to2003. It lists their racing models and was supposed to list the model numbers but we have still to sort that out. As every Holden owner knows the model sequence had nothing to do with the alphabet and something to do with the initials of the Holden Family members. We also bought a Brooklands book on DS & ID Citroens and were donated a Service Letter Manual on 1939 Chevrolet. We received a box full of good quality books last month. These include Cord by Dan Post The Cord Frontdrive by Huntington Jaguar Sports Cars by Skilleter The Jaguar XK by Harvey; Jaguar D type &XKSS by White Jaguar D type & XKSS by Robson E Type End of an era by Harvey Sporting Rileys the Forgotten Champions by Styles Riley at Birmingham pre1939 History FIAT Bertone 1973-1988 by Clark The Supercharged Mercedes by Halward Schrader & Carlo. Thankyou to Owen Aiken for this donation Watch out for our annual BOOK SALE on 27th July. We have lots of duplicates to dispose of and last years sale financed most of our Trade Me purchases for the year. In May we were given a bound copy of Alan Dick's 100 Years of The Motor Trade Association 1917 - 2017. It is a great history of Motoring in NZ and contains many articles and photos of cars and garages we have not seen before. We recommend you buy a copy while the 168 page Paperback copies are available at Countdown magazine section for $20. 2017 Northland Motorcycle Rally In the week leading up to the rally the weather was wet and windy, but on the Friday morning when Ian Hubbard arrived at our Pokeno farm to pick me and my bike and trailer up it was sunny. We then went back to St Helliers to get Ian's Triumph T120. We had a good trip up to Whangarei, Saturday morning dawned sunny but breezy. After a cupper plotter Martin Salter gave the briefing to the 49 starters. There were 18 Auckland members taking part. We set of Westwards on great country roads. We then circled our way up and crossed over SH1 and passed through the township of Hikurangi, then travelled up and down Mt Tiger - a great biking road. We then followed the water front road, crossing the new road bridge and finished the morning ride at the clubrooms for lunch. After a very good lunch, we set of west on another circular route but now the rain and wind arrived. We stopped at a members property to view his collection of British and American cars in various states of restored and unrestored condition. The owner will certainly have his hands full for many decades. We finished back at the clubrooms around 3:30pm, the rain still coming down. Time for a hot shower and then we were off to the Kamo club for the prize giving dinner. We had a very good dinner after the prize giving. Our Auckland members did well in the results. Auckland Results: Don Green won the Veteran class with his 1916 Triumph H. Dave Williams won the Vintage class on his 1928 Harley. John and Jill Williams 2nd PV in their 1937 Morgan. Warwick and Trish Darrow won the post war class on their 1953 Mac Velocette. John Hartles 2nd in P60, Ian Hubbard 3rd P60. Martin Spicer won the P80 class with his 1985 Honda CBX 550, John Comer was 2nd on his 1983 BMW R80ST. The overall winner was Auckland member Warwick & Trish Darrow. Hard luck prize went to John and Angela Bryant. They only got as far as the gate post of the club rooms, when their Velo died. John worked on the bike and finally got it going at lunch time. They completed the afternoon ride with no problems. Northland's Martin Salter did a great job plotting his first ever rally. Martin Spicer

2017 Waikato Double Fifty Auckland members boosted the number of entries at this year’s Waikato 50/50 by 22, with 6 from other Branches and 29 locals. Nine vehicles made their way to Cambridge via Wayne and Carrie Robert’s “Back Roads Route”. It is certainly a challenge these days with traffic getting out of Auckland on a long weekend. The gorgeous “blue dome” day that greeted us on Sunday was a perfect complement to the clean, green countryside we were treated to on the rally. The plotters again made extra work for themselves plotting two routes – a shorter to cater for the smaller/older engined vehicles and a longer route for the rest, but even with extra encouragement could only gather 7 vehicles to go on the shorter route. Maybe time to revert back to VCC class categories with just an option for a slower speed choice for veterans and vintage vehicles. Both routes were a pleasure to drive over, with the Waikato spoilt for choice with great rally roads, and our only niggle was having questions, answers to be found on both sides of the roads and sometimes requiring a complete stop to find – somewhat of a safety issue we believe. Aucklanders won 5 of the 6 placings with Wellsford/Warkworth Branch getting the 6th. Kaiaua Fish & Chip Run Sunday morning dawned with blue skies and sunshine. Ian Hubbard had left his 72 Bonnie with me after the Northland rally for me to do some cosmetic work on it and as Ian was in Warkworth for the weekend he said it was okay for me to take the Triumph down to Kaiaua. I arrived at the Jolly Farmer to find around seventy bikes and riders waiting. At 11:00am I told the customary joke and then we were off. It was a great ride down on clear roads, and as always coming down the hill into Kaiaua you got that brilliant view of the blue waters of the Firth of Thames and the Coromandel ranges. I had a count up in the two carparks, we had just under 100 assorted modern and club bikes. There was 5 sidecar outfits – Matchless, BSA, Harley, Moto Guzzi and BMW. Buster West Hill had brought along his Jampot members, Hugh Anderson had come from Hamilton on his immaculate 1951 Vincent and Dave Warren came down from Warkworth with his 1928 Harley. Also on the run was a 30's Austin 7 and a great looking Morris Oxford Woody and a MGB GT, plus members in ten modern cars. So all up we had around 130 people enjoying the fish n chips and catching with old friends and looking over the great assorted collection of vehicles. Lynda & I and Paul Downie were the last to leave at 2:30pm, Paul rode his Velo Venom back to our Pokeno farm for a cuppa before heading home to Parnell. So ended another world famous in NZ Kaiaua fish n chip run. Martin Spicer

2017 Irishman Rally
Last years’ experience of three up on a 1928 Harley Davidson and sidecar made us realise that steep muddy roads and river crossings in the winter are best suited to competitors half our age, so our syndicate purchased a 1926 Oakland Tourer as a suitable vehicle to tackle this annual challenge. “Betsy” as she is known has four wheel brakes, straight six engine of around 3.1 litre, although as an open car there is not a lot of protection from the elements. In the lead up we fitted a snorkel to the updraft carburettor, added antifreeze to the radiator and performed the normal ignition, lubrication and brake checks before setting off from the Auckland wharf for Betsy to be loaded on Voyage 99 of the Toyofuji car carrier for a sailing to Lyttelton. Two days later Betsy arrived and nephew Les picked her up and drove to Templeton to await our arrival by air. The rally start was at Twizel some 285km south of Christchurch so an early start for a meet at Lincoln University Student café for a cooked breakfast. We headed south and before the hour was up, our small convey had pulled up at the side of the road. Oh it looks like someone must have a breakdown calls out Bruce on his first drive of the weekend. Not so, as tradition has it to allow the engines to cool and the passengers the chance to partake of a toddy to warn off winter’s ills. This happened a lot over the next three days. Lunch at Geraldine, a wonderful scenic drive through Fairlie, over Burkes Pass to Lake Tekapo and on to Twizel where we were very adequately accommodated at the HighCountry Lodge. What a great scene next morning, the day was clear and cold, but the sight of 143 vintage vehicles with drivers and passengers suitably attired in coats, scarfs and beanies was marvellous. The morning was set mainly travelling the roads around the Ohau channels, past power stations with the occasional challenge of climbing steep rocky tracks or muddy stop banks with a couple of water crossings. Lunch was at the Twizel Golf Club and in the afternoon section we spent around two hours at walking pace driving the dry riverbed of the Ohau river. The drive late afternoon to Fairlie was via the McKenzie Pass, a truly beautiful part of the country made more special by seeing it from a vintage car.

2017 Irishman Rally Contd... We had accommodation arranged at a farm stay on the north side of Fairlie and took the opportunity for a meal at the Albury pub, great food and reasonably priced. Next morning was again cold but the temporary leadlight Leo had connected to keep Betsy’s nether regions warm helped with the starting procedure. Six volts seem to disappear quickly around freezing point! The main challenge of the morning was to traverse wet and muddy farm paddocks. Just towards the end of the last paddock Betsy dug her toes into the mud and refused to go forward so it was up to Bruce and Pete to offer LPA (Light Pushing Assistance). She extracted herself as any graceful old lady would and proceeded perfectly without the need to fit the snow chains that we were carrying. A tasty cooked meal was provided at lunch by the local schools, served at the Fairlie Community Centre, followed by the traditional gymkhana challenge at Pete’s Patch, a farm just on the northern outskirts of Fairlie. A bonfire was light and stories, short and long shared. Pete had the opportunity to compete in the gymkhana in a borrowed Austin 7 sports. The prize giving was a casual affair, emphasising the camaraderie of entrants and the tradition of the event. An endless supply of savouries and sandwiches complemented the BYO drinks to held lubricate proceedings. We returned to Christchurch the next day via Ashburton and left the car again with nephew Les to deliver to Lyttelton where she will be picked up in Wellington. Obituary ROY COPE recently passed away at the grand old age of 96. Roy joined the Auckland Veteran and Vintage club in 1957 with a 1924 Durant and very early on become Chairman. The Auckland Club at the time was not part of the Vintage Car Club in Christchurch and it was under Roy’s leadership that this changed. Roy sold the Durant and replaced it with a 1925 Sunbeam. Before Roy joined the Branch, the club had been given the custodianship of the 1909 International buggy which was owned by the War Memorial Museum. Once Roy stood down from the chair he became the custodian of the vehicle for the Branch for many years. The Sunbeam was sold and Roy moved into motor bikes. His wife Nita often appeared sitting in a side car of the Ariel square four. When he retired Roy along with four more motorcycle members started the mid-week runs. When the cars started to appear on the runs Roy purchased a small 1959 Wolseley so Nita could ride in more comfort. A Memorial service for Roy will be held on 27 July at 1:00pm, Glen Eden Salvation Army Church, 275 Glengarry Rd, Glen Eden. Barry Birchall
