Chairman’s Report Well we have had a very mild winter so far and I hope everyone has had good health over this time. With the days getting longer, it is time to get those vehicles out ready for the coming motoring season. The Garage Raid was held at South Canterbury Branch on the 4th August. With a great turnout of 112 people it kept the ladies on their toes at lunch time. There was a good turnout from Ashburton Branch. After a short briefing we left the club rooms to visit three Garages before lunch (pea, pie, pud) and another three after lunch then back for afternoon tea. A big thanks to the South Canterbury Branch for a great day out. Smiles For Miles was held on the 11th August at Ryal Bush Transport yard with a good turnout. We had six vehicles there with most doing three rounds each . The new door has been fitted in the club rooms and looks real good. This has a new lock on it so Peter Jacob has put an email out with how it works so if anyone has a problem with it give Myself or Peter a ring for help. We have had some trouble with vandals on the grounds with two security lights gone, one on the Club Rooms and one on the Museum. We have put up chains and safety cones at the gates so look out for them. The padlock number is the same as the gate into the paddock and the alarm in the club rooms. It is a pain having to do this but has to be done, sorry about the inconvenience for this. Things are ticking along for the Easter Rally in 2019. The Opening Run is on the 9th September More in Blowout Craig & Myself will not be here for this Run as we will be in Australia, so have a good run. Hororata Swap Meet 15th September 7.00am ---2.00pm Club night for September 20th 7.30pm is Murray Hawkes speaking on his life in Dubai. Spring Rally 23rd September. More in Blowout. Hi all Some time in the past few days the grounds have had a visit from some of Ashburtons’ less desirable people, they have been using the grounds as a bit of a race track and also have removed the sensor lights from above the museum door and also the one above the club rooms door. Why, heavens knows but they were carefully removed, there does not seem to be any other damage and the Police have been notified. Trevor and Craig Begg and myself have chained both entrances to the grounds, please be cautious when entering, there is a road cone in each driveway to show there is something there. It's a bugger having to do this because we have not had much trouble up until now. On a brighter note the new front door has been installed to the club rooms, looks bloody good. The security panel that was on the old door has been replaced with a brand new ultra hi-tech version, it's a different pin to the last one but it's the same as the Security panel inside and also the same as the pad locks. VCC Executive and AGM Report 2018 Meeting was held in Napier on 3rd – 4th August I would like to say that this was the best AGM and Executive meeting that I have been to in my 8 years of going, it was very informative with very limited pointless discussion from the floor. Executive meeting; Started with a minutes silence for Warren Birch from the Horowhenua Branch who passed away just a few days before the meeting, Warren had been a regular at these meetings for a number of years. A code of Conduct was circulated for comment at the AGM and will be sent to Branches for further comment. H&S, the templates that were to be available are now on the back burner as the committee member that was working on them has moved on, now they are waiting for another committee member to take this on, so work in progress. Membership Subscriptions, it has been a number of years since the subs were last increased, the executive were given three options to consider No increase, this would ultimately put us behind on any future development etc A $5.00 increase A larger $10 increase The executive voted on the $5.00 increase as it would be too much to expect those on limited incomes to pay the larger fee The 2019 Executive Meeting will be held in Wellington in March at the Miramar Golf Club, a short walking distance to the Airport. The Management committee are looking for a branch to host the 2021 AGM in the South Island. There was some discussion, continuing from the last meeting, regarding what the recipients of the 60 Year award should receive. It was decided that all 60 year awards should receive a framed certificate and also a 60 year badge. A presentation was given on the 2021 International Festival of MotoringTaranaki. It was stressed that this is not going to be the normal Rally, the organisers are focusing more on motoring and having fun with lots of social involvement. “Relaxed Motoring” To be held Sunday 17th – Friday 22nd February 2021, based in New Plymouth. 9
The success of this event would only happen if all the Branches got behind the event and promoted and encouraged entries from their Branches. Another presentation was given by Rod Brayshaw regarding the export of vehicles to Australia and the huge costs associated with the removal of all asbestos from the vehicles. This report was also in the latest Beaded Wheels. The AGM, started at 9.00am Saturday morning concluding at 2.40pm There were 4 branches not in attendance, with a good crowd of the usual people at the meeting, although come 1.00pm after lunch most left to go on the Art Deco Tour. Notices of Motion, the Notice of Motion as circulated in the Beaded Wheels regarding vehicle classification, that was proposed by Rod Brayshaw was passed. The National Calendar of Events was accepted A report was given regarding the increase of EV (Electric Vehicles) and their future in New Zealand, very interesting. Plus Rod Brayshaw shared more information regarding Asbestos entering Australia and the precedent it may set for the rest of the world. He also shared information about the growing trend of enthusiasts putting older car bodies on newer chassis, eg, 1966 Mustang on a 2010 chassis giving the owner a classic looking vehicle with all the modern running gear. Communications, an enlightening report as to the success of modern technology, Facebook and viewing our branch magazines on line. To date access to the magazine section on the VCC website has generated 38,602 views. The club communications officer congratulated all branches on their branch magazines and how professional that looked and contained excellent and interesting information. He also encouraged each branch to put as many photos of our events on our Facebook page and the Club Face book pages because this did attract a lot of views from prospective members and potential younger members. Branches were also asked to encourage members to send in their stories about their cars and their motoring experiences to their branch magazines and to Beaded Wheels. The Beaded Wheels magazine is also getting a increase in subscriptions and website views mainly from outside New Zealand. Don Muller from Archives would like to create a One Make data base of knowledge and information, any information can to be sent to Don Muller c/o VCC 12 Aberdeen Street CHCH. Event Manager was delighted with how all the branches have embraced the National Daffodil Day fundraiser this year, stickers were given to all branches to give out on the day 10
WOF, the issuing of 12 month WOF was still work in progress, the main reason being is that New Zealand still has a very high number of vehicles older than 30 years being used as daily transport and most are not in very good condition. The VCC would like to promote local garages that are respectful to the older cars and understand the mechanics of them so our members can pass on their contact details to those who are having trouble with their current issuer of WOF. Some Testing stations and garages would sooner look at newer vehicles. In the past 12 months, VCC have issued 316 x 50 year certificates and 26 x 60 years certificates. We were reminded that there is a fund available to each branch to encourage youth involvement either as helping at an event or as part of a school training exercise. Strategic Plan, as branches we need to look at encouraging family members to join the VCC, this generally come from including them on runs and Rally’s and inviting them to join in even though they may not have a vehicle, this will come. Also to encourage more Ladies events within the branches. Next AGM will be held in Greymouth at the Ashley Motor Lodge 16 – 17 August 2019. Tiny House Living We are still here despite an attempt at Environment Court mediation to resolve our neighbour’s concerns. It is all just going to take a bit longer. I have been installing lining on my Morris 8 van and as mentioned previously have now progressed to wiring. There is an amazing amount of clever stuff on Ali Express to enable old vehicles to be safe and compliant while still looking the part. I have voltage reducers, LED lights, junction boxes, vintage switches, relays and an electronic flasher unit. All sorts of interesting stuff and luckily the Morris 8 Club have found me a Lucas SW3 wiper from the thirties. These are really good for dripping warm water on you in use as well! BELL’S SUNDAY DRIVE 22nd JULY On a sunny Sunday morning 30 cars of ages ranging from the 1920’s to modern, gathered at the Clubrooms. After receiving our instruction sheets we travelled up Moronan Road and turned onto Moronan/Valetta Road where we had to wait for a few minutes for a herd of cows to clear the road, before continuing on Barford Road and SH72 to the Mayfield Domain for morning tea. There was time for a visit to the Overflow Secondhand Shop which is full of things to jog the memory and a great place to spend time and money. We travelled through the Ruapuna area on Moorhouse Road and then followed the Ealing/Montalto Road to Carew with all the countryside looking good after a mild winter. From Carew it was on to Geraldine to the Farm Shop Café where the 70 of us on the trip. sat down to a leisurely lunch. On leaving the Café we backtracked to the Orari River and turned down SH79 to the “Tin Shed” where we were able to browse through the shop, look around the few items in the sheds or just stand in the sunshine and continue the many conversations that had been enjoyed all day. From there we were free to return home at our own leisure, which for us, was a cross country trip from Ealing to Methven. Salisbury Differential Wanted
Hi I am looking for a 1920s Salisbury Differential as I need to replace the crown wheel and pinion in a restoration I am currently completing for my 1920 Davis Phaeton Tourer. I have attached a photo of the differential cover which measures 32mm high and 30.5mm wide. I am hopeful you may have a differential in your parts shed. I am a VCC member of the Canterbury branch. Dear Vintage Car Club people,
I wonder if you could help me identify an old car in the attached photo. I'd love to confirm what make it is, and its year. The back story is that I was born in Ashburton in 1942; my family moved away from there in 1950, but we retain many links. None were or are in the car business. Now I have scanned and magnified the photograph, it seems to me that the driver's door has on it "APB 5". If so, it may refer to the Ashburton Power Board. My father, Duncan McMillan, worked for that body in the 1930s & 1940s. So I have also attached a photo of the staff of that body. On the back of the original is written "Staff of Ashburton Power board, Aug. 1928". My father was the accounting clerk for the Power Board till 1950, when he was appointed Director of Southland PSSA and we moved to Invercargill. The other possibility is that the car may have belonged to my mother's father. Her maiden name was "Page"; her father operated a garage in the town in the 1920s. Brown's book on the town's history (1940) notes the "The list of Ashburton Borough Councillors includes: William Page, May 1921 - June 1923 (p.370), and as a Vicar’s Warden in St. Stephens Anglican church in 1924 (p.372). A fire at Westerfield in January 1926 “spread four miles wide from the railway near Dromore to Seafield. It was finally narrowed to 200 yards by the work of Allan Watson with a tractor and four-furrowed plough. Four hundred volunteers fought the flames and William Page, a popular Ashburton sporting man, died while trying to rescue his motorcar. (pp.193 -194)” I'd appreciate any comment you could make. Quizco Quizco was held at Ashburton Branch on the 16th August attended by 40 members, with South Canterbury taking the Trophy home with them again. Bernard Egan being the Quizmaster for the night, had everyone in fits of laughter. He had seven rounds of ten questions with some having a bonus question, it was a lot of fun. Thanks Bernard for doing such a good job of this, you will be kept on for this event.
A SPECIAL INVITATION FROM HBVCC TO OWNERS OF 100 YEARS PLUS OLD VETERAN CARS Come to Napier and join the HBVCC for Art Deco Weekend 2019 from February 14th -17th. Kindly sponsored again this year by Euro City Ltd Following the great response from the public to the 23 veterans we had in 2018 we again want to show them what the earliest cars look like, how they perform and where it all started from. We already have several early commitments including ADW first timers : a 1915 Locomobile, 1918 Twin Six Packard , Veteran Renault For 2019 the annual rally is again on Friday and we plan to have a 3 or 4 hour run plus a picnic lunch at an historic Hawkes Bay homestead. If there is sufficient demand there will be a special rally route for the early veterans (plotted by local veteran owners) to get you to the picnic on time. There will be a special prize draw ($250 of petrol vouchers) made from just the 100 year or older cars entered in the 2019 rally event. Come and join the other 180 plus club eligible vehicles we expect to enter the 2019 Event. Go to the HBVCC website for an Entry Form. (www.hbvcc.org.nz). Entry forms for 2019 will be available from 20th August 2018. Accommodation in Napier is already filling up for Art Deco Weekend so book now to avoid disappointment. LADIES LUNCH Thanks to Anne for organising the ladies to have lunch at ‘Nosh’ while the men were away at a Garage Raid to South Canterbury on Saturday 4th August. Eleven of us participated in the opportunity and enjoyed catching up amid much discussion on all sorts of topics of interest to females. While the men obviously had an enjoyable ‘men’s day’ we enjoyed a great venue, good food and good company. Let’s do it again ! Natalie Quantock
