Chairman’s Report Hi everyone it has been a bit of a cold spell so I hope everyone is getting through the winter ok. I would like to thank everyone for their kind thoughts while I have been on the sick list over the past couple of months, thanks a lot. A big thanks to the Members’ that took vehicles to the Ashburton Christian School on the 22nd May. The Solstice Run was held on the 17th June with a small turn out on a cold sort of day, We had a drive around town and out through the now closed Fairton Freezing Works. Then it was back to Taits Road to visit Gerry & Sue Power’s garage, who have a collection of Chrysler Valiant Charger cars and an E Type Jag. Added to that was an ex hearse with a BBQ built like a coffin in the back, with sausages cooked by Gerry for us. Thanks a lot Gerry & Sue for your time and effort. Then it was back to the Club Rooms for some hot soup and to watch a video. Thanks David & Marion. The front door in the Club Rooms has been looked at by Dennis Trudgeon and was found to be in a bad state of repair, so it is going to be replaced with a new aluminium one. Also the vinyl for the toilets and front porch has been ordered and will be put down as soon as the door is replaced. The committee had a meeting with a member of the Tinwald Reserve Board, which was a positive meeting with things looking good for us. We may have to give up a bit of land, but will just have to wait and see what comes out of it. Annual Dinner 19th July, 6pm drinks, 6.30 pm meal. We have three 50 year badges to present, plus 3 other service badges and Restoration of the Year. Look forward to seeing a good turnout please. Bells Run 22nd July, don’t forget this day out. Club Captains Report June 2018 The Solstice run was attended by 30 people, (15 cars) which is not a large turnout but it is so easy to just stay home when we get a fortnight of such gloomy weather. Our next run is “Bells Run� which will be advertised elsewhere in this issue of the Blowout. With days beginning to get a bit longer we can expect a reasonable number to attend. Please make the effort to come along, it is disheartening to organise an event and only have a small number attending. The organisation of the 2019 Easter Rally is proceeding well with the venues for both the headquarters and for the rally venues arranged. The myriad of other requirements are well in hand with the entry form, catering etc. A monthly rally update will begin when more arrangements are finalised. General Business; The secretary to explore ideas for club flags Daffodil Day, A Show & Shine will be held as part of this year’s National Daffodil Day fundraising effort, this will be held at the Club grounds on Sunday 26th August, all welcome. Advertising on Facebook, and papers plus invitations will be sent out to other interested clubs. A gold coin donation for the public and $10.00 per vehicle with all funds going to the local Cancer Society. The floor and frame plus the bottom of the door are rotten. It has been suggested that we replace the whole door with an aluminium one. Trevor has cancelled the hall hire for the Annual Rally at Allenton Rugby Club and also cancelled All Fed Up for the same event. The event venue has been replaced with the MSA. Defibrillator; the committee are currently looking at purchasing a defibrillator to be held at the Clubrooms and possibly taken on events. Discussion was held whether to install a heat pump in the club rooms, it was felt that it would not get used enough to warrant the expense. Karen asked the committee if they would purchase a laptop for the treasurer so she was able to use and run the new accounting programme as Karen up until now was using her phone. Several prices were circulated to the committee and after some discussion it was decided to make the purchase. Motion, the club purchases a new Laptop from Noel Leeming to take advantage of their special price and to also purchase a suitable one colour printer, moved Karen/Peter L AIF 13

Swap Meet, it was noted that the coffee lady had a long queue for coffee for most of the day and perhaps we should look at getting another vender. Add equal sugar to prepared weight of fruit. (I used 1 pint Brandy to 6lb fruit and sugar). Put Brandy in stone crock or very large glass jar. Add fruit as it comes into season and with each addition of fruit add equal amount of sugar. Stir every day until last of fruit has been added. Cover and store in a cool place. Mixture keeps indefinitely. NOTE: Do not add more than 8 parts fruit to 1 part Brandy. ED: I have been using my last batch I made in 2012 and it still tastes great but very alcoholic, so have to watch if the older grandchildren are around. This is lovely over vanilla ice cream, especially on a hot summer night. 14
1907 CADILLAC REBORN (Front cover photo) The bones of the vehicle were retrieved from the Ministry of Works rubbish dump at Tekapo by Alan Champness of Ashburton about 1966. Apparently the original site of an old homestead that had been bulldozed over. The four mudguards and bonnet were all complete when recovered. Other parts were sourced from the North Island. The seat had been removed by someone in Fairlie who used it for sitting on their veranda to watch the traffic pass by. During a visit to Alan’s shed 40+ years ago Rob saw the project stored in the rafters and remarked that if ever Alan wanted to part with it he may be interested. About 3 years ago that phone call came. Alan’s health had deteriorated to a point where he knew he couldn’t complete the restoration and he wanted it to go to someone who had the expertise to put it all together and get it running. The dust hardly settled before Rob had looked at it and made a decision to buy it (not necessarily in that order.) Money was spent, a son was summonsed, the trailer hitched on and the load moved home. A set of new wheels had been made and were still in the North Island, arrangements were made to get them home. The motor had been done but since it was a long time ago Rob took it apart and redid it to make sure it was OK. The diff had never been touched and was badly bent and had to be basically rebuilt. We had a rack but no pinion so one was made. With only 2 tubes as a pattern a new radiator had to be built. That was an epic job that necessitated building a jig and making 1400 new fins that were soldered onto new copper pipes. Would hate to count the hours that went into that. Luckily a new shell came with the vehicle. Many trips to the VCC Museum on Saturday mornings were made to take measurements and check things out on Mark Bearman's 1906 model displayed there. A steering box, steering wheel and column were borrowed from John Mclachlan to use as patterns to construct new ones. The horn was found at the Christchurch Swap Meet. We hadn't managed to find any affordable lights that were suitable but one afternoon long time Chrysler owner, Kelvin Slade, arrived with a set that he wanted us to have. One was in really good order but the other was missing the fancy top part. Another challenge but the lathe was cranked up and a new top made. We had no rear section for a body so the decision was made to build a small truck back as we've haven't ever had an old commercial vehicle. A trip to 'Overflow' in Mayfield and a load of old oak provided the wood 15
and an old dray wreck the old style fittings. While heading to a rally in Central Otago we drove around Duntroon and came upon another old horse drawn 'thing' among a patch of blackberries with an old time step attached. We managed to persuade the owner of the property that it would be more use to us than him and exchanged it for money. The truck was painted at home, the only work that was out sourced was the upholstery that was done at Ashburton Canvas and Upholstery. After a few trial runs we took it back to the previous owner who was delighted to see it up and going and even managed a ride around the block in it. It's still a bit of a work in progress to get it perfect enough for Mr Fussy but Mark Bearman assures me that will always be the way it is.

The tour will take the form of an ornithological expedition and will travel through the Nevis Valley and a high country station. It will be best suited for higher clearance vehicles as the tour will travel over high country tracks with fords and farm tracks. Editor: I am very sorry that some reports were not published last month due to the extra pages taken up with AGM reports etc, that must be circulated prior to the Annual General Meeting held late June. Swap Meet 2018 Another very successful Swap Meet was held at the club grounds on May 5. The gates opened at 6.55am and were closed at 4.45pm – a long but rewarding day. I would like to thank the fifty plus members who helped, ensuring the sites were set up over two days and the day ran smoothly. Special mention needs to be made of a few members who did a power of work; Barry Quantock and his team for the work in planning and marking the new area at the western end brought about because of the potato patch; Karen Bell, “Swap Meet Booking” and her team who worked for weeks prior to and throughout the day to ensure things ran smoothly, Ruth Sheppard and Isla Jones who handled the EFT-POS and money side of the event and Kelly Kingsbury and Percy Ralston who helped erect and take down the SH1 sign. We sold 340 sites and have forward bookings of about 217 for next year’s event. Even though the day was cool and a bit foggy early on, we had a large crowd. The Lions provided food through two outlets this year, the marque and their new caravan, as well as manpower for gates and admission. We thank them for their support. There were many positive comments from site holders and the general public regarding the overall running and success of this annual event. Thanks to Ryall Bush for the use of their yard for parking, Fulton Hogan for Traffic Management, Allenton School for seating and Eoin and Chris Matheson for having the Swap Meet advertising sign on their property alongside SH1. I have a few ideas that I will take to the committee re changes or modifications to enhance the Swap Meet. Any suggestions / comments from members are welcome and these will be discussed in July.

Tiny House Living still… A Great Big Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome at the AGM. Chris and I have been working through the subdivision process and as happens sometimes, a neighbor has stalled us. The passage of time and costs involved in dealing with Council and Environment Court has taken a toll on our health and to spend an evening with friendly faces was a real boon. We expected to be in our new quarters for this winter, but maybe it will be next year. Just as well our cottage conversion of the garage included good insulation. As you will see in this Blowout, Chris has formally taken on the role of Editor. Don’t expect to notice any change as she has been doing the job for ages and as always we are still sharing the teamwork required for publishing an informative and varied newsletter. So as Dean Martin used to say, “keep those cards and letters rolling in”, (well reports, photos, items and adverts anyway). Alan & Chris - Kaikoura 19
A beginner’s view of the VCC Irishman Creek Rally I purchased my vintage car some years ago, whilst spending most of my time overseas (while my wife Jeanette ran the farm and family in Canterbury). While I joined both the RRBC and Ashburton branch of the Vintage Car Club I had little time to devote to driving pleasures. This situation has changed and I took advantage of the opportunity to participate in the Queen’s Birthday weekend Irishman Creek Rally for the first time. Rather daunting as, once the rally is mentioned in motoring company in Canterbury, veterans of the rally appear from every group of apparent gentlemen of a certain age, even more daunting they all seem to drive Model A Ford’s, many far from their original modest specifications. An ‘Irishman special’ seems to comprise an A with a two speed diff, balanced crank exhaust and carburation options rarely available pre 1930, often with Q-ship low key presentation disguising their high(er) performance character. The Ashburton district contributed it’s fair share of these cars. I am pleased to be able to report that despite these efforts our Phantom 1 was able to outperform the best of this fleet of modified beasties. The mere expedient of having an extra, nearly five litres of engine capacity dealing with the uphill, and straight road capabilities of most, coupled with an extra couple of metres of wheelbase providing a spacious and comfortable ride as well as the capable breaking from the Phantom’s servo assisted four wheel braking system made the variety of roads a pleasure to drive. A little extra time at the petrol pump being a small price to pay. The rally organisers had done a magnificent job, arranging an intriguing route, access to farm tracks and property not normally accessible, as well as impressive command of the weather which although cool, was never beyond the capacity of a swig of port to ameliorate. The route commenced in Oamaru, coinciding with the steam punk festival weekend, and with a gorgeous sunrise along the coast to the South of the town soon wound into a vast region of hilly bits, in the area between the Waitaki valley and Maniototo / Dansey’s pass road. A substantial lunch for 450 odd (some quite odd) occupants of some 160 vehicles was provided in Kurow. The group responded to the hospitality of the town by depositing a substantial quantity of oil on the carparks and service station forecourts of the town. The group then proceeded up the Hakataramea valley where cold afternoon fog opened out to cold brilliant sunshine in this beautiful valley, then to frozen fog and hoar frost once over the saddle. Numerous small fords and frozen conditions left a thin coating of ice on all, once again the benefit of my Co-driver’s foresight proved the efficacy of a good port in most motoring situations. My brother Kenneth, who shared the weekend with me made a very telling observation when, having passed several cars with bonnets open and 20
groups of well wrapped mechanicals in attendance noted that usually when cars suffered mechanical tribulations on the roadside those in attendance were normally worried, morose almost, whereas these chaps all seemed to be amused, even uplifted by the experience. Overnight was in Fairlie, which was absolutely dominated by vintage cars, often better fettled than their occupants who, many having undertaken this pilgrimage many times, had certain traditions to fulfil in the frost. Sunday morning bright and early we once again received instructions and proceeded through many back roads between Fairlie, Raincliff and the outskirts of Timaru, before going back inland and visiting the magnificent Bluecliff’s Station for morning tea among the impressive historical farm buildings, before proceeding through the farm, eventually regrouping on their high-altitude topdressing airstrip. A challenging climb on a grass track. Having marched the cars to the top of the hill we marched back down again and returned by another mystery tour to Fairlie for lunch. An afternoon gymkhana event provided entertainment, with the modified Model A’s featuring, Austin 7’s being irritatingly good on the grass, and a very impressive display by the gigantic straight 8 Marmott. I rather demurely declined the invitation to display the advantages of an 18’ wheelbase sliding on grass. It was pleasing to see a number of younger participants enjoying the event. I was most impressed by the organisation, camaraderie, and beautiful countryside and I have already booked accommodation in Fairlie for next year, these bones, although well wrapped, are no longer tolerant of winter nights under canvas. Parts Shed Report Sales this Month $120.00 A donation of $50.00 has been given to the club for the return of some parts that was left in the paddock after the swap meet by a man from Chch. Two of the parts people have decided not to continue with the parts shed. Our thanks to Kevin Harkness and Kelly Kingsbury for their help. A donation of parts has been collected from an estate.
