Remembering A Great Cadillac Designer-Ed Glowacke—By Robert Tate, Automotive Historian and Researcher Looking back at the talented automotive designers that should be recognized in our auto history books, they should include Ed Glowacke, chief of the Cadillac design studio during the 1950s. His peers referred to him as the man with impeccable taste and immaculate attire at General Motors. One of his most important attributes was a great talent for designing automobiles. It was his passion. On May 19, 1947, Harley Earl appointed Glowacke to supervise a newly formed studio called "Special Automobile Design," which started work on what became the 1951 LeSabre show car. An early example of his work was this early proposal renderEd Glowacke with 1957 Cadillac front end design ing (shown at right) of a Cadillac front end that he designed in 1948. In September of that year, Earl decided to make Glowacke head of the Chevrolet studio, where he was responsible for the design of 1953 In June 1, 1951, Glowacke became Cadillac studio design chief. Later, he expanded the idea from a Bertoia Diamond Chair design to influence the front end of the 1957 Cadillac grille, which became extremely popular. The 1957 Cadillacs were restyled for the first time in three years and introduced at the New York Automobile show, where they became a huge hit. However, prior to the 1957 Cadillacs’ debut, Glowacke was involved with two great looking Cadillac show cars in 1954, the Cadillac El Camino and the La Espada models. The models were both two-seater designs, one a coupe and the other a convertible. They were the first Cadillac models that introduced quad headlights. Later, quad headlights would appear on the 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham models. The 1954 Cadillac La Espada show car was also a drivable model introduced at the 1954 GM Motorama show. Its fiberglass convertible body featured a great design that the public really admired. Another classic show car that came out of Glowacke’s studio was the first Cadillac Eldorado Brougham that made its debut at the 1955 GM Motorama show. It was a great looking pillarless four-door hardtop and was on of the most admired cars at the show. The model sported a brushed stainless-steel roof and quad headlights. The 1956 Cadillac models proved to be very popular with the buying public. Model year production surpassed over 150,000 units. Walter McCall, author of “80 Years of Cadillac LaSalle,” said, “Tail fins on the 1956 cars were squared off and capped with a fine chrome bead that extended the full length of the rear fenders.” In conclusion, Ed Glowacke was Cadillac studio’s chief designer from June 1, 1951 to August 1, 1957. He gave the brand a new look during the 1950s and was known for his high standard for design. Sadly, Glowacke died of leukemia in 1962 at the age of 41. He left an incredible legacy in Cadillac designs that both historians and enthusiasts will admire for many years to come.

Extended Mid-Week Run for CHB VCC Wed 14th-Thurs 15th-Fri 16th October, 2020 Scarlett and Rod are putting together another three-day trip, given that the run to Te Kuiti and beyond was pretty popular last year. This year we will head into the Wairarapa area, in mid-October. We will be away for two nights and three days motoring with a few interesting visits and things to see and do. This run will obviously entail some fairly full days of motoring [eg possibly more than 300km per day!], so it will, again, be more suitable for P45, P60’s and P80’s vehicles, but that is not to say that you shouldn’t drive your Vintage or PV vehicle on the run if you know it is up to it. We have done nearly all these roads in our Model T in the past so you ought to be able to cope! You ought to have a good road map at hand when you start the run. You need to start with a full tank of fuel, and we noted that the cheapest fuel was actually in Waipukurau when we drove the route recently. You will need to pack a picnic lunch in the car before you leave home for our first lunch stop. The run will be in the form of a “Tour” and will be noncompetitive. Visits will include shopping and sight-seeing in Masterton and other Wairarapa townships, visiting two Light-houses, lunch at the iconic “Lake Ferry Hotel”, and, culminating with a visit to the Southward Museum near Paraparaumu on Friday 16th. Because they are close together, the Motels we recommend staying at both nights are: South Park Motel, at 55 High St, Masterton. Phone 06 377 4144 [speak to Tanya] You are advised to have your bookings done well in advance, but you are free to stay at any other motel or camping ground as you see fit. It‘s obviously more social to have all of us staying at the same venue. You will, of course, need to budget for all of your motel costs, tea/coffee stops, lunches, your evening meals, and other motoring costs, etc. “Initial Instructions” will be printed in the next “Bleat” to get you to our first meeting point which will be in Pongaroa.

Chairman's Report—September 2020 Another “Twilight and Night Rally” has been and gone with 43 brave people attending. The first stop was for soup and a bun at the Takapau RSA followed by dinner and dessert at the “River Park Event Centre” at Tamumu, an excellent venue. I won’t go into this any further as Laurie Malcolmson is writing a report on the evening. A big thank you goes to Eva and Iain Gollan for arranging the club night venues over the past year or so for our meetings. The venues and meals have been excellent. Our next meeting is at the “Dannevirke Services and Citizens Club Inc” at 1 Princess St, Dannevirke on 16 th September. We normally meet around 6.00pm with the dinner at 6.30pm with the monthly meeting following at 7.30pm. VCC members from the Manawatu are coming over to join with us and we have a husband and wife motoring team as guest speakers. Car sharing to get to the meeting can be arranged by letting me or Ken Lyons know so it can be managed if you would like a ride, or are prepared to take someone else with you. Talking of “Guest Speakers”, it has been suggested that a guest speaker at our meetings would be well received by our members. If you have a speaker in mind, let me know and it will be followed up. On the “Calendar of Events” coming up is the annual “Gum Boot Rally” in Taihape on 31 st December and 1st January, 2021. I have been involved with this event for the past five years and it has been getting bigger each year. We have stayed at the Taihape Motel [0800 200 029 free phone] each time. Con Vasil has owned the units for 50 years, and he has recently sold them. I have booked the four bedroom house, so if you require any information, let me know. We usually put on a bit of a “follow-the-leader” run to get over there from CHB. The “Daffodil Run” normally arranged for early September has been canned this year due to health issues with the owners of “Taniwha”, and an alternative run is being planned later in the month. Can some thought be given to a venue for our Christmas Party in December? Last year’s one at the Weaver’s home was a big success, and we need a place to gather for this year’s one. Could someone please volunteer to arrange a “Beach Run” in January? Give me or Rod a call with your ideas. Perhaps your ideas could be discussed at the next meeting. Well, that is probably enough from me for the month, and we look forward to meeting with you in Dannevirke on 16th September.

Rod’s Rattling's—September 2020 Bruce Poole’s “Twilight Run” was a pretty good success with around 20 car loads of participants eager to find their way to the food stops. Soup and toast at the first stop was followed by a full size meal at the Tamumu Event Centre. Unfortunately, one of the Hawke’s Bay entries had an electrical issue with their Ford Model A, stopping out in the country with no lights, however they eventually got rescued and fed, something of a story in itself. Scarlett and I [as branch delegate] went to Wanganui on 14th August for the VCC National AGM. Beautiful weather greeted us which stayed for the entire weekend. A report is printed herein. On Friday 28th August, a number of our members with cars met with the local “Cancer Society” people in Waipukurau’s main street to help with visibility and people-power, whilst they endeavoured to raise some funds for their organisation and the work they do for the next year. Several ladies there acknowledged the generosity of this branch with our recent donation to them. One or two of our members were going to head down to the “Tui Brewery” at Mangatainoka on Sunday 30 th August where there was to be a “Ford vs Holden Day”. Too big a crowd expected, so under the present circumstances this got cancelled. I was looking forward to taking a couple of my nephews along who are interested in older cars, one has an 1964 EH Holden being restored. The “Daffodil Run” to Taniwha has had to be called off due to health issues on the Mabin family farm and COVID restrictions, with the farm being closed to all the public this year. However, there will be a “Spring Run” to another property or two in the Takapau area on Saturday 19th September that Gary and Janet Weaver along with Basil and Diane Stephens are arranging for the branch. I am quite certain this will be an interesting run into the country. The following day, 20th September, the Ongaonga community have invited the branch to their “Victorian Spring Fair and Market” being held in the village. It was huge success last year with about 5000 people engulfing the place to the surprise of the locals. There will be preferential parking held for vintage cars, and entrants are encouraged to wear some period-type clothing. I wonder if this will get canned too! There are around 15 car loads coming with us on the extended mid-week run and “Wairarapa Adventure” that Scarlett and I have planned for mid-October. There are three or four couples who have indicated interest in coming along who haven’t confirmed they are coming with us at this stage. We need to know so we can get instruction sheets printed and advise places we are calling at how many people are likely to be with us. A “blurb sheet” was printed in the last “Bleat” of what we are up to and where to stay, etc. We will print an “Initial Instruction Sheet” in the October “Bleat” to get you to Pongaroa where we will regroup for morning tea before heading out. If you haven’t advised us you’re coming yet, “Extract Digit”! Make sure you read the story about a possible “Overseas Trip” for the branch which is printed within these pages. It may be the only chance you’re likely to get for an overseas trip going into the future.

CHB VCC “Overseas Trip” My “Hair-brained” idea of a trip to the northern reaches of the South Island in February or March has gained some traction with several people telling me they would be interested in the trip staying away about a week or so. Seeing as Angela Annear advertises in the “Bleat” and is a travel agent I have asked her to put something together for the branch. She has successfully arranged travel for us in the past on a number of occasions. The basic plan would be to catch the ferry to Picton and have a couple of days in and around Blenheim/ Marlborough visiting such places as Omaka and a winery or two. Then, we would leave Blenheim and travel the Molesworth Road to Hanmer where we would have another couple of nights exploring the area before heading to Nelson via Springs Junction. Based in Nelson we could head across to Takaka and maybe even take the bus out to Farewell Spit. Visits to the WOW museum and PICS peanut factory could be arranged too. A final night in Picton would need to be planned for. Bookings for all this will need to be done well in advance with your commitment to the trip. Motels would be “middle of the road” and not too costly. Other travel costs, meals, etc, would be your responsibility. Without commitment from a reasonable number of our members the trip can’t happen. Angela had said to me, “I think you need to ask for expressions of interest in this tour in your next newsletter. March is a busy travel time and accommodation for a group of 20 is limited. I am looking at 17 – 26 March. No price as yet, but I feel that I will be asked for deposits quite quickly”. So there you have it club members, this could be one of the most memorable trips you will do in 2021 [providing we can travel due to the virus]. Modern Old cars—that is 30 years of age or older—written by Rod McKenzie It seems that quite a lot of folk are getting into “newer” cars for their outings with the Vintage Car Club. One of the reasons is that a “modern old car” can cruise at normal road speeds, whereas many vintage cars are more suitable to cruise safely at around 45mph [or 60-70kmph in the new money]. I came home from the Napier “Art Deco” event in February driving our Model A along S/H2 [late Saturday afternoon], and at the first place where it was safe to pull over and let following cars past, around 50 cars tore past us [we actually pulled over and stopped at Otane to let them go]. I can only imagine the frustration of not being able to get past, not us on the road so much as the “safety barriers” not allowing us to leave room for them to get past. I rather dread taking our Model T along the road between Waipukurau and Waipawa at a busy time with all the new “Safety barriers” and “Cheesecutters” along that stretch, when a safe cruising speed in the T is more like 35mph! There will be little opportunity to allow other vehicles space to pass safely along this section of road. I note from reports in “Beaded Wheels” that some branches are holding an event and get only a couple of actual veteran or vintage cars out on the run. Is it any wonder? and the driver of a forty ton truck doing his best to get an inside view of your exhaust pipe doesn’t do a lot for one’s mental health either. We took our 1987 Holden to Rotorua with the caravan on behind in March and it performed admirably as it should, travelling at normal road speeds. On our return, we joined the Taupo branch for their event and noted that several other cars of the same era as our Holden were taking part in the rally. Will we expect to see more vehicles such as ours on events into the future as the very old cars become less able to be driven by their older and less able drivers? I had a short visit from one of our members a few days ago in a 1989 Mitsubishi Mirage, quite tidy but still in need of a little TLC to keep him interested. Maybe this is the sort of vehicle we should be encouraging younger people to own to foster their interest in the VCC. It is quite a different “kettle of fish” from his now sold 1960’s Pontiac he has pedalled with the VCC for the last 15 or 20 years! And, no doubt, the fuel bills will be more manageable too. Twelve hundred bucks well spent I reckon.

Vintage Car Club of New Zealand 2020 AGM and Executive meeting—Delegate’s Report. The chairman of the Wanganui Branch of the VCC, Bruce Ardell, welcomed all participants to the Executive meeting on Friday evening and thanked them for coming. Diane Quarrie, National President, reminded all that due to the present situation with COVID-19 we should all sanitise our hands and keep to social distancing as best we could. She also reminded delegates of their duties in reporting back to their branches about the meeting. She also gave us a “heads-up” on Rod Brayshaw’s health issues, in as much as he had a stroke in February and is not able to do his report [although we had it in writing]. Members of the executive should promote their branch’s thoughts as to matters pertaining to the good of the club as a whole and make accurate written notes [herewith]. The usual format for meeting procedure followed with 25 apologies made, as were the minutes from the last AGM held at Greymouth. Discussions were had on [a] Health and Safety check list for events, [b] the club constitution, [c] correspondence which included suggestions on handling spares at a branch level, [d] a card could be produced for handing to non-members with an eligible vehicle showing the benefits of belonging to the VCC, eg insurance [could our branch do this?] [e] a report on membership status and why do members resign [reasons to be followed up] [f] the budget whereby no increases to the subscription costs were recommended [approved], [g] delegates to forward costs to Head Office asap. [h] Calendar of events with such items as the next Executive meeting being held in Wellington, the National Motorcycle Rally being held either in Canterbury or Southland who will promote the “Bert Munroe Event” around Invercargill, [i] some other events require volunteer branches to come forward for National events, [j] the archivist is appointed by the executive each year, and Don Muller from Canterbury was reappointed to the position. A “Proposed Notice of Motion” was tabled whereby new members can apply for membership “on line” which will make it easier for everyone to join the club. A “Constitutional Change” is required, and Terms and Conditions will need to be applied. As branch levies are different from one branch to the next, there will be a set fee of $100.00 to join [plus $15.00 for a joint membership]. The “joining fee” will cover the first year of membership. Branches are to deal with new member applications “pronto”, and it is the branch responsibility to see the paperwork is done. A new member will not need a nominator or seconder for an “on line” proposal. A remit to cover this will go forward to alter the by-laws at the next AGM. General Business: Branches should take some responsibility for “Covid Tracing” on branch runs rally’s and club nights as some record is required, all should be doing it for everything. Use QR codes. Health and Safety: we have a duty of care to our members with a safe environment respecting our people. Eg Rally organisers should note toilet stops, right turns, trip hazards, and wear Hi-Viz vests. Organisers should fill in the form and be aware of any issues, it is not scary [see section 43A for the forms]. You cannot contract out of your responsibilities. The Executive meeting resumed at 2:00pm on Saturday afternoon, and there being nothing of note closed at 2:12 pm with several folk going for a look round the town or stopping for refreshments and a yarn. The Annual General Meeting. The Club was welcomed to Whanganui by the mayor, Hamish McDowell, who spoke about the heritage of the city and some items of history, wishing the club well into the future and for a successful meeting. Andrew Anderson, one of the founders of the club and now 92 years of age, addressed the meeting and reminded us of the challenge he issued to the club last year, which has now been delivered by nature in the form of “Covid-19”. The challenge today is the destruction of life as we have known it impacting on the club, its members and the activities we [the Team of 9000] enjoy. What will society look like in time to come, he asked? Would other car clubs unite with the VCC and its team of 9000 members? There will likely be an article in “Beaded Wheels” relating his speech for all to read. Apologies were called for, and a tally of 51 names was read out, being predominantly our Northern colleagues. “Zoom” meeting have been held over the last few months which does nothing for the camaraderie for like-minded people getting together face-to-face. 13

Vintage Car Club of New Zealand 2020 AGM and Executive meeting—Delegate’s Report. Historic Racing Licence: the Licence test has been finished and will go to the branch manual. A 100% result will be required from members taking the test, and will be up and running shortly. Participants in racing events will know what the rules are. Rebranding: this is all on hold at present. A draft of requirements and so on will be available for discussion at the Executive meeting in March, but will be circulated around the branches for discussion/input earlier. Registrar’s Report: Due to Rod’s health issues he was not able to deliver his report but points were read out by the President. The registrar is involved with the dating of vehicles and initiated the ID card system used by the club since 1996. The VIC card is his “baby”, with the first of the cards issued in 1999 with liaison with Land Transport he is on the FIVA technical committee and attended 2019 General Assembly in Cyprus in November before his health issues were a factor. The VCC are now recognised as leaders in the world with the “VIC system”. The FIVA is a world-wide international organisation looking after the interests of owners of historic vehicles represented in 71 countries and over two million owners. At this point in the meeting Rod Brayshaw was called to the front of the meeting where he was presented with a Life Membership of the club by the President. It was noted later that there needs to be strong emphasis to maintain the “Historic Vehicle Authority” part of the club, which is recognised officially by Government agencies. The Annual Financial Report: in his absence, the Secretary-Treasurer’s report was tabled and showed a surplus for the year of$63,459. There are some 8500 members of the club at present. There is a much under used facility called the “Youth Subsidy” that branches can apply for to encourage the youth of the country with interest in the older motor vehicle. The base funding is $200, but a request for a larger figure could well be received. Subscriptions: the net figure at present is $55.00 per member and $10.00 for an associate. Branch levies are over and above this cost. Secretary-Treasurer: a new member to the management team has taken on the role with the resignation of Michael Lavender who has been in charge for something over 10 years. The new person is Canterbury based Chris Lee, and being a younger man could well be involved for some years to come. The Management Committee were all thanked for their work throughout the year by Diane Quarrie, President. Life Membership Awards: in addition to the Life Membership conferred on Rod Brayshaw for his work earlier in the meeting, another Life Membership was awarded to John Coomber who has held both the office of secretary and President in the past, and is presently chairman of the Canterbury branch. Both men were taken aback it would be fair to say and felt most humbled at the recognition and award. Wanganui Branch: The President thanked the Wanganui branch for hosting the AGM this year and it was noted that Wanganui was the first branch formed of the VCC in the North Island. Bruce Ardell, chairman of the Wanganui branch asked two gentlemen to stand and be recognised, the first being Alan Bates, patron of the branch, and Peter Williams, a founder member from 1955. Julie: Many of you will have dealt with Julie Cairns-Gee, the National Office Manager for the club, over the years. Hers is a paid position within the club holding the many facets of the club together in a friendly way, and is particularly knowledgeable about the vintage car movement. She has been in Head Office keeping the “train on the rails” for 25 years now, and was given a large bunch of flowers, and a good round of applause for her service. She really is the one the President and members rely upon for all manner of things. Insurance: the Head Office building was damaged in the Christchurch earthquakes in 2012. The contents are insured by VERO and the rest is being updated by Crombie-Lockwood. Gary Beaumont spoke about issues he has seen with insurance. Ask the questions if your vehicle[s] is away from your property. Is it covered at home and in the repairer’s shop? Is it at risk and covered if on a trailer? Are parts that have been removed for attention by a restorer covered for loss? What is the repairer? Is he a registered person, a retired engineer or panel beater? There are traps, so watch out. He lost two motorcycles in a fire at a repair shop and didn’t get paid because of issues. 14

Vintage Car Club of New Zealand 2020 AGM and Executive meeting—Delegate’s Report. VERO Historic Rally 2012: this event needs to be sold to our members. A 10% entry of members will be the target. If it doesn’t happen, there is unlikely to be another chance at a major event such as this. Taranaki is a good place to hold the event as it has good roads and scenery. Badges and Awards: two certificates for 70 years of membership have been awarded, 69 certificates for 60 years of membership awarded, and a total of 355 50 year badges so far have been presented [there are 52 more in the pipeline]. When an award is made, some effort needs to be made to celebrate the awardee with a citation of his/her story of membership. Facebook: this has shown steady growth over the past 12 months and is interesting to follow. There are only 41 followers in the Hawke’s bay region out of 1818 followers. It is a good tool to see what is happening in other regions and with other people’s vehicles. Entry forms can be found here too. Education Module: This is a VCC initiative which is available for schools with a presentation which can be made to a relevant school, eg science experiments showing the use of acetylene gas powered lights in pre electricity days. New Members: when someone new comes along to a meeting or event, embrace them, talk to them about their interest and above all, welcome them! John Goddard Trophy: This was awarded to Don Muller from Christchurch who has been the Archivist for the club for some years. He collates photographs, stories, books and magazines, and motoring history for the club. Many folk have donated items from collections and estates to the archive which is available to be viewed should you be in Christchurch [by appointment]. The story of the John Goddard trophy has been written in “Beaded Wheels” on several occasions in the past. Change of Logo: this is not about changing the name of the club as another organisation would grab it really quickly if another name was selected. However, the “Logo” will come under scrutiny at the Executive meeting in March. Some ideas will be tabled there. National Motor cycle Rally: this is being held in the Wairarapa on 12 March 2021 with competition on the Saturday. It will be based at the Solway Showground's and will travel roads from Castlepoint to Palliser and onwards toward Dannevirke over a period of a week. Swap Meetings: the Manawatu and Canterbury Sap Meetings are scheduled to take place at their usual venues in October [subject to Covid rules at the time]. The next Vintage Car Club Annual General Meeting will be held in Christchurch in August 2021and will be the 75th running of the event. It will take place at Addington and attendees will be encouraged to bring older cars. After-match function: On Sunday morning many of the attendees, led by Bruce Ardell who seems to know many folk in the city, were taken for a trip round Wanganui for about three hours with visits to a large industrial warehouse, and a hangar. The warehouse turned out to be a huge and quite old building, parts of which had once been the distribution centre and storage for “Big Tree” petrol, and another part, a “Dalgety’s” wool-store, all of which even later became a storage and distribution centre for the “Warnocks” shopping chain. It fell into disuse then became a storage facility for old cars and machinery, which it largely has remained. With our new-found friend and Wanganui branch member, Ted Matthews and his 1928 Dodge sedan, we headed out into country north-west of the city to a large hangar, the property of Richmond Harding. He and his late father had been involved in setting -up Wanganui Aero Works around 1950 with a couple of DH82 Tiger Moths. He told the story of the company and the aircraft they had used over the years. In the hangar was one of the original and now beautifully restored Tiger Moths along with his “baby”, a 75% size replica of a Spitfire. After his address, we viewed a memorial on an old restored fertilizer hopper he has in the hangar to all those named men lost to agricultural aircraft accidents since 1950. We wandered down the grass airstrip where this rather spritely 82 year old had taxied the Spitfire. It disappeared toward the gate where we had entered the property and shortly thereafter it came roaring down the grass runway powered by its 350 cubic inch Chevrolet V8 engine. Off the runway and into the sky, wheels up, and shortly it was entertaining us with the sound and sights as only a Spitfire can, as it roared around the sky close to where we 15 stood. What a privilege! From there we tootled through the streets of Whanganui in the Dodge to the Whanganui VCC clubrooms for a beautifully prepared soup and salad lunch before we headed back to CHB.

The 4 day time trial starting Albany, Auckland Thursday 15 th October 2020,travelling over closed tarmac road stages to overnight in Whangarei, before returning via closed road stages to overnight in Ellerslie Friday 16 th October.

A 2 day time trial starting Ellerslie, Auckland Saturday 17 th October 2 0 2 0 . This is a totally new event with a significantly reduced entry fee aimed at VCC members who wish to enjoy an outstanding Targa VCC event over a weekend. On Saturday 17th October, both 2 and 4 day entrants travel over closed tarmac roads on the Coromandel to overnight in Whitianga, where all VCC entrants, friends & family are invited to join for a meal together at the M e r cury Bay Club, and where we’ll also be presenting some fun participation awards. Sunday 18th October will see all of us returning over closed tarmac roads on the Coromandel to event finish & prize giving dinner in Pukekohe. The Targa VCC Time Trial 4 day & all new 2 day event gives VCC members with VCC/VIC eligible cars an outstanding opportunity to test their driving & time-keeping skills over closed tarmac stages, safe in the knowledge that they’re all driving in the same direction from start intervals, with nothing coming towards them. As I write this short update our largest city is currently in Level 3 lockdown, while the rest of us are abiding to Level 2 rules. A bit of a cliché I know, but we really are living in uneasy times and all trying our best to stay upbeat and project calm, without having any idea from one day to the next what the outlook is going to bring us. In the meantime, with trepidation we must all remain positive, and carry on as best we can with the planning of our future motoring events. Therefore, the organisers of the Highland Fling Rally have great pleasure in confirming to you the Highland Fling Rally is scheduled and booked in the VCC ‘Calendar of Events’ to take place Anzac Weekend 2021! My joint ‘Organiser Extraordinaire’ Alastair Jones sends this very positive message to you all. ”It has been most heartening to receive such a large number of emails and phone-calls of encouragement urging us not to give up on running “Highland Fling,” and many of our erstwhile entrants even asked to leave their monies with us until next year. No doubt this was to ensure they had a place in the “Fling” There was even quite a number who asked whether it was possible to reschedule it to later 2020, since the thought of having to wait until 2021 was a bit much to bear. On that note we didn’t consider it possible to fit it into an already jam-packed motoring event calendar, and as well late Autumn delivers superb colours, which are bound to captivate the considerable number of the ‘tender gender’ who have indicated they will be attending. All this preamble is to assure you it will be Anzac Weekend in 2021 even if we only have NZ entrants. Inevitably this dreaded virus has had an effect in a small way on our accommodation providers in Taihape as one of the smaller providers has been bought by the Government, for emergency housing, and Taihape Motels has been sold by Con (the Greek) who was such a good supporter of car club users, but alas to no avail the new owner is keen for a booked out weekend! There was an initial concern that lack of business at our Saturday lunch-stop bought about by canned tourism might cause them to shut-up shop, however, they seem to be made of back-country “hardiness” and are hanging right on in there. On that, not all who would have been involved this year have been told we will be back at the same time next year and keener than ever because of having to wait. With the long wait through “lockdown” I am sure your time will have been well spent in going over your vehicles which will eliminate all involuntary stops”. So, there you have it folks, watch this space, because we will be endeavouring to do our very best to make sure this event happen is going to happen. By the end of September, you will receive the Entry Form and another Newsletter. And for those members who were as keen as mustard last time to be sporting the new exclusive Highland Fling apparel, (caps and polo shirts,) I will include with the Entry Form a separate order form with the ordering details etc. In the meantime, please look after yourself and your loved ones, and most importantly, stay healthy.
