The Nelson Classic Car Museum displays cars from a little 1908 Renault AX, to classics cars of the 1950s including Vauxhalls, Triumphs and Cadillac's, through to the exquisite mastery of Jaguar and Ferrari. This Museum is the place to marvel and admire an incredible collection of iconic cars. The Museum also has its own working restoration shop you can view through a window.

Some of the old identities of the area will be joining us and hopefully the lady Bruce purchased the car from will also be there so it could be quite an interesting time.

VEHICLE IDENTITY CARDS (UPDATE) January 2021 There has been some more minor changes to the Vehicle Identity Card application forms. The forms that you have or are now using could you please make sure that the date in the top right hand corner (below the page number) is as follows: Pages 1-2-3 are dated 09/2019, page 4 dated 01/2021, Page 5 dated 09/2019 and pages 6 and 7 are dated 10/2020. The main change is that now we require photographs of all avail able identifying serial numbers i.e. Chassis/frame, engine, body, Vin and any other identifying features and copies of any paper work that is relevant to your vehicle. There is only one photograph/copy of the above required but we still require 3 photographs of the finished vehicle. If a car or comer cial vehicle please take the photograph on ¾ view and a motorcycle taken side on. LATE ENTRIES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!! The CHB VCC Twilight/Night Rally starts at 3.15pm at “Pioneer Corner”, Tavistock Place, Waipukurau. The first car away will leave at 3.30pm. There will be a visit to a hotel for soup and buns during the event. Dinner and prize giving will be held at the end of the run in a licensed venue somewhere in Central Hawke’s Bay. Entrants must be current financial members of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand or guests of a fi nancial member of the VCC. The event is open to all vehicles as recognized by the club, which must be up to the club’s accepted standards regarding cleanliness, general and mechanical condition. The organiser may refuse to start any vehicle, which in his opinion fails to meet that standard. Modern non-competitive vehicles will be accepted as entries. The rally organiser reserves the right to disqualify any entrant whose conduct in his opinion is likely to bring discredit to the event or to the club. The ruling regarding any matters in respect of the running of the event will be final and no correspondence will be entered into. The New Zealand Road Code Rules must be obeyed at all times. Chairman's Report—March 2021 First of all a big thank you to Eva Gollan for organising our last meeting venue at Oruawharo Homestead, as usual a very good meal, good company and some positive future runs and outings. Also another Great Beach run organised by Iain Gollan and Eva Gollan. Leaving Waipukurau to get to Mangakuri to visit the Williams family Church built in 1887?. Iain's sister Margaret Duncan gave us a very interesting talk on the churches history and the land surrounding it. I remember in the early days of Waipukurau Construction limited and a crew from town had to repair the roof when a big pine tree fell onto it. They made a wonderful job of repairing it, one would never know it was then up the hill and down to get to Mangakuri Beach to another interesting talk of the area and how the wool bales were loaded from the beach onto the boats through a very narrow rocky channel. The woolshed has been converted into a house. I met up with an old workmate who lives at the beach and I went up with him to look at progress on his house, 20 years ago I helped him with it, lots of changes to see. Then onto Kairakau Beach for lunch and another talk by Mo Pearce on the history of the area and how the community managers the camp. After lunch it was then off to Mangaroa Lodge beside the Horse Shoe Lake, for some more local history, they are doing some great work in conservation, planting thousands of trees and organic farming. Then it was onto the Patangata Hotel for Wine Biscuits and Lemonade (Yeah Right!) an early dinner to end our beach run. Thanks for a Great Day out! On March 6th the Foots, Ken Lyons and myself are off to the Manawatu Branch in "Ruahine Ramble" Rally and it will be 51 years ago when I first entered the Chrysler in the same rally. I'm looking forward to March the 14th when John and Shirley Foot are putting on a run to Pongaroa. A gentleman from Waipukurau who comes from Pongaroa is contacting all the people who will remember the Chrysler being there and they are coming from all over the North Island to be there. Ken has sent out a Flyer to get names by the 6th of March so as to let the morning tea and lunch venues know numbers. It should be a great day in Pongaroa. Art Deco this year was still a great event but due to level 2 lockdown which was only lifted at midnight 14th February a few Aucklander’s did not make it and most events had been cancelled. The veterans had a good run on Thursday, Rally day on Friday went well and an excellent lunch venue (Club run one day) and then out with friends on Friday evening and then got together at the Club rooms on Saturday morning. A lot of people left about lunch time to go home. I am looking forward to catching up on the 14th March and if we have a turn out like the beach run the towns of Dannevirke and Pongaroa will be full. Keep safe out there and drive safely.

Rod’s Rattling's—March 2021 The Beach Run that Iain and Eva Gollan arranged for the 14 th February was attended by 22 crews who enjoyed a drive into the hinterland of coastal Central Hawke’s Bay. Several visits were planned for the day Mangakuri beach and Mangarara farm with lunch on the foreshore at Kairakau Beach which was very pleasant with members sitting around the cars, having a yarn, and enjoying the summer sun. A drop in to Patangata Pub for a meal at the end of the day was enjoyed by many of the participants. Several of our members enjoyed a few days at the “Art Deco” event that was “cancelled”, but the HB VCC decided to carry on nonetheless. A wise decision as it turns out. Some of the businesses around Napier will have suffered more than somewhat with the initial decision to “Pull the plug” due to the Covid outbreak in Jaffa-land. John and Shirley Foot are taking us to Pongaroa for lunch on 14 th March starting from Dannevirke. Further information will be noted elsewhere in the “Bleat”. At our next Club night meeting on 17th March, being St. Patrick’s Day, it has been suggested that everyone should go along in a shade of green for the evening for a laugh and a bit of fun. There could even be some Irish songs to be heard. “Paddy O’Rafferty’s Motor Car” is one that comes to mind. Keith Hopping and I went for a bit of a cruise a few days ago into the Rangitikei area where he had said to me that there was an excellent place to visit, being ideal for a club run. And it was too. So, he is planning to take the branch to the ”Makoura Lodge” near Apiti in April 21 st and 22nd for an overnight stay. Again, watch for instructions and details within the “Bleat”. This could be a real fun adventure, and is only about a two and a half hour drive from CHB over mostly sealed surface roads. Look it up on “Google” and find out what it is all about instead of me rabbiting along about it. The Twilight Rally that Bruce Poole and a couple of ring-in cohorts are planning for early May, probably the 8th May, I understand is coming along well. It will be along the lines of what has happened in the past with a sort of “Progressive dinner” and an interesting drive into the CHB countryside, some of which you probably won’t see much of ………….. because it will be dark!

Sunday 14th February—Club Beach Run—written by—Chris and Bernard Murphy Sunday 14th February (Valentines Day) saw us up early to get to Waipuk around 9 00am from Napier. A great turnout of about 22 cars headed off from our meeting point at Tavistock Place and followed our Buttercup leader and instructions to travel a metal road. Two thirds of the way along this road we were met by John and Margaret Duncan who directed us into a paddock beside a church originally owned by the Williams Family. We all filed in for our visit to church for the day. The church has been beautifully preserved and is a very quaint little church out in the country. After our visit we were Gavin and Viv’s Buttercup outside the church back onto the dusty road originally owned by the Williams Family CHB and called into Mangakiri Beach. Here Gin Millar talked about loading wool from the holding shed onto lighters and then transferring it to the ship in the bay. After Mangakiri Beach we headed for Kairakau Beach for lunch. Great to sit amongst friends as we ate our lunch. After lunch we moved into Parked among the cowpats the hall and Mo Pearce gave us a talk about the history of the beach. He is obviously passionate about his connection with this lovely beach. For most it was then a stroll along the sand and see what had been done after the big seas and flood devastated the area a few years ago. From here we carried on to Mangarara Rd and came to The Mangarara Lodge. A beautiful lodge and Rachel Hart gave us a run down on how they had the foresight to develop a beautiful lodge built from a stand of All the Fords—Smales’s Ford Anglia, Rod’s Ford trees on the prop- Model A and Tony’s Ford Model A erty that sleeps 17 people. They encourage people to join in activities on the farm. Also there is a lovely lake called Horseshoe Lake that guests can kayak on. A great getaway for family groups, corporate groups and more. Here we were provided with a cold drink and or tea and coffee. Also invited to look through the rooms and view photos showing the history of the Relaxing at Mangarara Lodge farm. For some, we then finished our tour for the day at the Patangata Hotel. A welcome beer, wine or something non-alcoholic at the end of an enjoyable day and to finish off a very nice early dinner before we headed for home. 200 kilometres later we arrived home in Napier and had a refreshing shower to remove a bit of dust. (Don't get me wrong though it was dusty but most of it went up over our heads. Patrick our car was the dustiest of us.) Sunday 7th February 2021—Manawatu Veteran Rally— written by Rod McKenzie Fourteen veteran cars turned out for the Annual Manawatu Branch VCC Veteran Rally. Five of the entries were from CHB Branch, with other entries coming from Wanganui, Hawke’s Bay, Nelson, and of course Manawatu. The weather was perfect and plenty of sun-screen was required and little in the way of warm Jackets were needed. Things got under way with a cuppa at the Manawatu Clubrooms and a wee yarn from the organiser, Derek Haycock, who told us all what to expect, where we were heading, and importantly, where lunch was being held. We all had picnic lunches packed for the occasion. The first stop was only a short drive north of the clubrooms to a large black shed [Black Barn Pickers NZ] owned by friends of the organiser, Steve and Kirsty Ward. This was something of an eye-opener for us all. I have never ever been in a privately owned shed so large with a collection of memorabilia so large.

There were three cars on show, umpteen motoring signs with advertising for petrol and oil, rustic farm implements, old pedal cars for the kids, general antiques, and apparently around 9000 number plates from both New Zealand and all around the world. Mind boggling! My number plate collection is a minnow in comparison. What a dream place to see. 12

Sunday 7th February 2021—Manawatu Veteran Rally— written by Rod McKenzie After this we drove by Fielding and west toward Ohakea where the lunch stop was organised at the home of Dennis and Judy Milne, multiple Austin owners. There was no wind and a most splendid view across the Manawatu. We also had the opportunity to inspect the progress on his 1910 Austin veteran car, a vehicle which in the early part of its life was a truck at the Leopard Brewery in Hastings. After lunch we skirted the Ohakea air base travelling to Bulls. We were privileged to be shown through a large home that has huge history in the Bulls township. The young caretaker is a member of the original family who built it in 1915 following a fire in 1914.

We made our way back to Fielding where many folk stopped for an ice cream, as you do, and then headed back to the clubrooms via Bunnythorpe. A short test on the grounds to get a winner was held, until we packed up the old cars onto their trailers for the journey home. Surprise, surprise, we were nominated the winners, and were presented with a chocolate bar. That beats the chocolate fish we got on one other rally for some misdemeanour or other. A social hour or so was held having a yarn with the other crews until a lovely barbeque was prepared by the organiser’s family with assistance from some of the other members of the Branch. Art Deco weekend February 2021 Although the Art Deco Trust cancelled their part of the Art Deco weekend because covid 19 level changes, mostly all the privately organised events went ahead. Although numbers where down on previous years Napier and surrounding areas were buzzing. The HB Vintage Car Club went ahead with their organised events which were highly successful attracting the most beautifully presented, proudly owned, line up of veteran cars from all over the country. Central HB Members Rod and Carol Naylor arrived in their beautiful Ford Model T a recent purchase from Nelson. CHB member Tony Prebensen, Mike Steward and HOLLY looking very smart.

Old Iron Rally—February 2021—Written by Brian Connor The Old Iron Rally held recently at Maraekakaho had lots of vintage steam machinery, tractors, trucks and bulldozers but did not have any vintage car entries. However it did have on display this “slightly modified” Model T Ford forklift. It had no placard so can give no more details. Who said “recycling” or “up cycling” was a modern concept?. On the Saturday the Ford Model A Club turned up in force as part of their run in the morning and set off just down the road to GodsZone for Lunch.
