The Indianapolis 500 is the one race that even non-car people are aware of. This granddaddy of all Oval American Car Races was started in1911. There had been shorter races on the two and a half mile rectangular brick surfaced track as early as 1909 but none so heavily promoted or successful as the 1911 500 mile extravaganza.
