ered by a steam engine sounds really strange, doesn’t it? Who would even think of building something like that? You would have to start the car’s boiler about 15 minutes before you could even think about driving anywhere, and there are all those knobs and valves to use, how complicated would that car be?. Steam engines were actually quite reliable back in the day. The advantages were no clutch, no transmission, no choke, no magneto, and no hand-cranking that could possibly spit back and break your arm.

NOMINATED POSITIONS

Steam engines tend to run forever because they’re not under any stress. Forget for a moment that you live in the 21stcentury, and imagine you’re back in 1910. The gasoline engine was first invented in the late 1800s, maybe 20 years ago, and you’ve only been seeing gas-powered cars on the street for 5 years or so. Henry Ford has just released the Model T in 1908, and even that will run on alcohol, kerosene, or gasoline, because there’s no general agreement that gasoline will be the fuel that everyone’s going to use. Even Detroit Electric is making some pretty cool electric cars that are as good as anything else on the road. But, on the other hand, you’ve been riding in steam trains your whole life. Your grandfather rode around with steam engines, and you see them all over the place. You know about steam technology and you understand it, so you trust it. And here’s the kicker: the steampowered car is by far the fastest and most powerful vehicle you can buy. While most gasolinepowered cars were pushing along at a maximum of 25 miles per hour, a steam-powered car could easily hit triple digits.

Stanley Steamer Car—by Jeff Zurschmeide To give you an example, Fred Marriott set the world land speed record of 127.659mph in a specialized Stanley Steamer in 1906. In 1907 he was very close to raising his own record above 140mph, but he lost control and crashed the car while trying. Just to be clear, that Steamer was going faster than most modern cars can go, over 110 years ago. With a Stanley, every stroke is a power stroke, so a two-cylinder steam engine has the same power impulses as a V8. A four-cylinder has the same power impulses as a V16. You’ve got all kinds of power, and it’s so different from an internal combustion engine, there are actually two chambers in every cylinder on the Stanley steam engine. So the piston gets pushed in alternating directions as the engine rotates. That’s why even though the Stanley engine makes only 10-30 horsepower, it makes up to 800 pound-feet of torque. That’s enough to twist the tires off the wheels, which is why the Stanley could out-accelerate anything else on the road in 1910. Here’s another reason why the Stanley Steam engine is cool. The whole thing had just 13 moving parts. The engine was connected directly to the rear axle, so there’s no transmission. It takes some practice to learn the function of every valve and control on the Stanley Steamer, but once you get the hang of it the car is quite drivable in modern traffic. The engine itself is really two parts. There’s a boiler and the actual engine. The boiler burns kerosene or gasoline and boils a little bit of water at a time. The steam is then directed to the pistons to push them one way and then the other. As the pistons move, the steam on one side is released back into the condenser to become water again, and more steam enters in from the other direction to reverse the piston motion. It does take a good 15-20 minutes to get one going. It works very similar to a water heater. You light a pilot, and then you turn on the boiler and you get a big rush of steam. One major misconception that people have is that a steam engine is likely to explode. People think they blow up, but no Stanley Steamer has ever blown up. It can’t blow up just by the nature of the way the steam boilers are built. They have copper in them, so the copper will melt and burst and blow steam in the air, but they don’t blow up. Stanley made steam-powered cars for 25 years, from 1901 to 1924. In that time the company made and sold about 9,500 cars. By 1924 the gas engine was really dominant and people had pretty much settled on the standard control layout for cars. But in the first quarter of the 20thcentury, other steam car manufacturers such as White and Doble also flourished. You could buy a Stanley Steamer runabout for as little as $850 (about $20,000 in today’s dollars) in 1910, but most models cost about twice that much. Today, you can find working Stanley Steamers in good condition at around $50,000, but some have sold as high as $200,000. 2

This will be a fun filled Mid Winter Christmas Lunch with everyone dressing up in their favourite costume and wearing a pair of Gum Boots that have been decorated in your favourite design. The CHB VCC Twilight/Night Rally starts at 3.15pm at “Pioneer Corner”, Tavistock Place, Waipukurau. The First car away will leave at 3.30pm. Chairman's Report—July 2020 The AGM is coming up and all is well. Having done my three years as Chairman, members will be able to elect a new chairperson and committee. There are also two 35 year badges to be presented to hardworking members who have contributed greatly to our branch and their former branches. Our first post-lockdown run was held on Sunday, 21 June. It was somewhat thwarted by less than ideal weather (it was the shortest day, after all) but those attending enjoyed the roads chosen. This being my last report for the “Bleat”, I must thank the committees I have chaired and the members in general for their participation and co-operation throughout. It has been an enjoyable experience. I’ll sign off with a couple of tips: 1. When parking up for a long period don’t apply the handbrake as sometimes the linings will stick to the drums. 2. Always have a mousetrap set in your garage and a rat trap as well, if there are likely to be rodents about. These wee beasties can do thousands of dollars worth of damage to upholstery and wiring. Happy motoring, and may your gases escape only from the exhaust pipe.

Rod’s Rattling's—July 2020 We have had the chance to get out onto the road a couple of times since the last “Bleat”. We thought we were in need of some fresh air and a wee drive on Sunday 7th June, and thought others might be too. So on extra short notice of only about four hours or so, we asked by email for those who wanted to turn up at Ongaonga for an ice cream to come along. About 10 cars appeared and we were able to have an ice cream [or coffee] and enjoy a bit of a yarn with some of our fellow members. On 21st June, the Cross’s arranged for a really nice drive into the Makaroro and Ashley-Clinton areas where the grass has started growing once more, and the countryside is looking refreshed with the rain we have been having at long last. However, the day was considerably wet, and as there wasn’t anywhere to stop for smoko or a yarn, we had our drive into the countryside as arranged but the “Social Distancing” we thought we may have had to contend with didn’t matter as no one stopped for anything and they all went home after the run. We had a bit of a chat at the start, but that was all the socialising we did. Most members seemed to turn out in their moderns, as we did, but Peter and Suzanne McCool arrived by Model A and headed for the hills. A short distance from town saw them on the side of the road with an electrical issue and they didn’t complete the run, with the car being trailered home. The Annual General Meeting is being held this month, Wednesday 15th July at Oruawharo. Come along and see what you can do to contribute to the running of the branch. You will get to work with and know many other people who enjoy playing around with and driving older motor vehicles, and you may even have an idea for a run somewhere to entertain other folk from the branch. What you get out of it will be friendship from here in CHB, and all around the country, and sometimes beyond these shores, and the opportunity to go to places you would never otherwise get the chance to visit. And it is fun! Laurie and Gloria Malcolmson from Dannevirke have invited us all to take part in a “Mid-Winter Christmas Party” on Sunday 26th July, which sounds like a bit of hilarity. Details are printed elsewhere in the “Bleat”. Be prepared for Bruce Poole’s annual “Twilight Rally” on the night of Saturday 8 th August. As usual, he will be sending us off into the wilderness where we will find a place to have some soup and toast, before finishing the run for a light meal somewhere nearer civilisation. He has arranged for numerous prizes for the “pot collectors” among you, and I feel sure it will again be a fun evening. Get your entries in pronto! John and Shirley Foot have replaced their Nissan which was so badly damaged in the crash they had near Blenheim just prior to the “lockdown” in March. Both John and Shirley have made good recoveries from their injuries incurred in the accident and look forward to motoring around the North Island again very soon. They have purchased an Australian Ford which should give our Chairman plenty of ammunition for more “stirrings of the pot”. We saw it out for the first time on Cross’s run and it looks to be a relatively tidy old beast with not too many “k’s” on the clock, and which I hope they get a lot of enjoyment from. A bit of TLC to the interior and a bit of valet work will have it looking very presentable in quite short order. I bought one new back in 1990, so that must mean I am getting older too. These Australian produced cars are becoming quite sought after so long as they are unspoiled and standard, and have not been butchered by some clown trying to “improve” them. If you don’t believe me, check out the asking prices for Fords and Holdens of the 1970’s and 1980’s! It’s the old story, “they are only original once”.

SO WHAT DO YOU COLLECT?—written by Rod McKenzie Many Vintage Car Club people, in fact people in general, have collections of all manner of “stuff” that they value and have built up over the years. The “Covid-19” problem has kept most of us at home and cooped us up in the house [or shed] and on the section for a time. Some collectors have been working on displays and cataloguing their “stuff”. What have you got that other VCC members could well be interested in seeing? How about putting pen to paper [or fingers to keyboard] and let the rest of us “stay-at-homes” know what you have put together [assembled] over the years and what your passion is? You may find that someone who you least expect has an item that could assist your collection, or you may be able to add to their “treasures”. Remember, “one man’s junk is another man’s treasure”, or woman as the case may be! Many of us have been in the sheds of people with a collection of cars or motorbikes [haven’t we all?] and/or other automotive stuff. But there are other collections that have been seen too, such as gramophone players and records, automotive books and magazines, spark plugs, hub caps, carburettors, motor registration plates [guilty your honour!], firearms, tools and other stuff you wouldn’t want cluttering up your own shed or home. Some people collect postcards [naughty ones?], stamps, pottery, china, war memorabilia, advertising material, furniture, paintings and other historic or generally old or antique-type gear. How about telling our readers about your collecting passion? You may well find that someone you would never expect will come out of the wood-work with just the right item to add to your collection because they don’t need it, or it is surplus to their needs or they consider it “junk”. So write a note about what tickles your personal collecting fancy and send it to the editor to let the rest of us know what you collect or what you would fancy adding to your collection.

Sunday 21st June 2020—Cruise in the Country—by Hank and Ella Our first run after lockdown was a gloomy, rainy, foggy but not a cold day. Our farming community will be well pleased, although the rain could have come a couple of months earlier. Because of the Covid 19 and social distancing we were not tempted to stop at a pub or cafe for a hot drink etc. Instead we enjoyed some stunning views from our car windows mostly all grey colour tones out of a painters pallet that day, shades of grey, black and white mixed with lots of water. The rivers were definitely filled with fast flowing grey muddy water. All the farm animals were well washed some of them shone in the rain. Although very wet it was great to get out and about. We would like to do this run again on a shiny sunny day and make a stop at the Tikokino for meal or just a drink. The " Cruise in the country" was well organised by Lynn and Sandra Cross, thank you for organising this run, it was a very enjoyable in our nice warmed, demisting car.

BACKGROUND

I’ve been a car enthusiast for 50 years, and for the past 22 years have had my own internationally recognised business restoring and modifying vehicles in Masterton. That business continues at that location, but my wife and I have purchased a residential property in Napier, and are permanently residing here from January 2020. With the shift I needed to relocate my vehicles and auto memorabilia, and was faced with the same problem that besieges car enthusiasts globally. Not enough space at home to store everything. Accordingly I have secured premises at 68 Thames Street, Pandora, Napier, and have been setting up an elite car storage facility for like-minded enthusiasts. My personal interests are predominantly with Hot Rodding, Muscle Cars and Motorsport, but I also have a passion for the Art Deco Era, and accordingly we are targeting a diverse range of vehicles to accommodate. There are precedents for this type of business overseas, but locally I am only aware of private collections that have extra cars stored on an ad-hoc basis.

OVERVIEW The concept is different to the usual model of a lock-up. Rather it is intended to have the vehicles on display in an appropriately decorated facility that will have more of a gallery feel to it. An important feature of the facility is to also develop a classy ‘clubhouse’ atmosphere where owners can also hang out with fellow enthusiasts. Motorsport (eg Bathurst) watch parties have been scheduled. Whilst we expect most vehicles will be stored on a long term basis, owners will have the option of being able to independently maintain, uplift and use their vehicles.

Cars in storage are on trickle chargers, and all vehicles are supplied with oil drip pans as part of their storage. Additional services such as a hoist for basic owner maintenance and under-car cleaning are being added in the near future. For absentee owners requiring vehicle maintenance in between use, this can be organised on your behalf. For peace of mind, the building is fully alarmed and 24/7 monitored security is in place.

Thirdly and importantly (for without food we are nothing) a special mention goes to Barry Smales very ably assisted by Lynne who, between them, have seen to the catering for a number of years now and have earned a well deserved break. They have organised a varied menu at multiple venues which has kept us entertained in body and mind. I would like you to show your appreciation to them. Off committee, also Sandra has attended to publicity and co-ordinated the Daffodil Rally which has been very successful with the help of a good committee and raised $2,600 for the local Cancer Society. Where would we be without Joyce? Month in and month out Joyce produces the “Bleat” which is the publication that keeps us all up to date with what is happening next and what has already happened. The “Bleat” is read far and wide and, thanks to the Internet, costs us as a Branch next to nothing to distribute. In the past year we have had feedback from various parts of New Zealand and on one occasion Australia. Well done Joyce and thanks for your ongoing commitment. Once again, we have three Committee members standing down. Peter McCool who has been on Committee since day one, and John Foote and Barry Smales who have both been there a good number of years. John will continue with his VIC and Scribe duties. Fortunately, we have volunteers lined up to fill the vacancies and look forward to new faces and new ideas in the coming year. Thanks also to various members who have organised rallies and runs throughout the year, taking us to new and interesting places. Our Branch continues to be represented at other branches’ events, especially but not only by John and Shirley Foot. We had a particularly good contingent at Taihape over the New Year and once again brought home the Gumboot. In closing, I must say it is a pleasure to be Chair of this Branch, we are almost embarrassed by our riches not only of finances but of personalities and camaraderie. I would like to thank John and Shirley Foot for their help and support during the transition from newish member to Club Secretary. Being new to the CHB Vintage Car Club activities, not knowing the wider membership so well, and their history of involvement reminded me of the saying “thrown in the deep end”. I hope the club membership will appreciate I have done my best to “keep my head above water.” During this year I have learnt quite a lot about managing files, databases, storing and retrieving information from recorded meetings, keeping the club manuals current with the ongoing updates from National Office. Writing the minutes has been challenging, I hope they have made sense to those that have read them. Communication is important, and the distribution, forwarding of information from Rally/Run organisers, National Office, Club Capt and Chairman, Club night info from Barry all contributes to the health of the Club. Along with the Bleat and Bulk emails for our members this information distribution is working well. Sometimes a double up may occur for something important, hope that’s ok for you all. This year has felt like an apprenticeship and I have served my time. If re-elected I would do my best to serve the club well during 15 2019 -2020. CLUB CAPTAINS REPORT Central Hawke’s Bay VCC branch has had some very good runs throughout the year which include Cross’ run into the Porangahau area, Malcolmson’s run to Mangatainoka and beyond, and the National VCC Cancer support day which culminated in a visit to Wallingford Homestead, with a good number of public and non-members enjoying the day. The Cleland’s persisted with a “Spring Run” after having weather issues initially. The meal night in Dannevirke in September where we were joined by the Manawatu Branch was well-supported, and where Kaaren Smiley, the North Island Club Captain, spoke of the up-coming Tour she was planning for March. Wellington Branch paid CHB a visit with their annual “Tom’s Tour” during September. In October Neil and Pat Malcolm gave us a run to the sock factory at Norsewood, followed by a visit to “Kintail Honey” at Takapau. The Veteran Rally in November was fun, but not particularly well-supported nor attended and I question whether it is worth persisting with in its present format, however the “Homestead Run” the following day to “Waikareoau Station” which we shared with the HB Branch, was very popular with many car loads of folk attending. About a dozen cars entered into the spirit of Christmas by taking part in the Waipukurau Christmas Parade. The Christmas run to Phillips’ shed at Te Rehunga arranged by Laurie and Gloria Malcolmson was well attended and fun. Just before Christmas a “Reliability Trial”, arranged by Seton and Judy Thomsen, was enjoyed and became a very social day out with 15 cars attending. In January a run to “Shoal Beach” to the home of Paul and Judy Jensen was popular. February had us going on a shed raid, organized by Wayne McDonagh, to several sheds of CHB members with about 30 vehicles coming16 along. Continued on next pg

Central Hawke’s Bay Branch of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand (Inc) March saw the branch visit with Bernard and Chris Murphy in Napier, and the North Island Club Captain’s Tour passed through the district to acclaim from many of the participants. The Cross’ took us to Church in the hills of Flemington in April, the closest to heaven several of us are likely to get it was thought. And in May Bruce Poole took us out on his “Annual Twilight Tour”, a sort of progressive dinner which was fun and, again, well supported with several entries from out of the district branches. Thanks folks! The branch has been represented by numerous of our members at other branch’s and club events throughout the year which include the “Irishman Rally” in Canterbury, the “Art Deco” event in Napier, and the New Year rally in Taihape where the New Year was not seen in because all the oldies had gone to bed and were sound asleep by mid-night!. Going into the next season of vintage and classic motoring, I would like to encourage as many of you, the branch members, to think about what you can do for your other branch members by putting on a run to somewhere interesting, or to put on some other challenge that your fellow members may well enjoy. For instance, Seton and Judy Thomsen will be having a crack at another “Reliability Trial” later in the year, and, no doubt Bruce Poole will be plotting another “Twilight Adventure” for us all. There are lots of gaps to fill! Which Beach should we visit in 2020? Perhaps it is you who can take us there. It is not for me as your Club Captain to put on all, or any, of the runs, but to assist those of you who are prepared to have a go at doing one. There is huge experience in this branch you can call on for help, which is exactly what Henk and Ella Domper have done for their run to Norsewood next month. Once again, my sincere thanks to my very supportive P.A., Scarlett, who keeps me on track more than you probably realise. And also, thanks to her too, for the work she does co-ordinating the raffle prizes each month. It is a very costly exercise to send your branch delegate, me, to the Executive and National AGM meetings for all branches throughout the year, so I hope you read and get something out of the reports I have written for you, the members of the branch. OK, what does it cost, I hear you ask? Several hundred dollars each time usually and a lot of time and work on my part, so I sincerely hope you, as members of the branch, are able to get something of value out of what I report back. We are entering into my sixth year as your branch Club Captain, and it would be healthy for the branch to have someone else coming along to fill my shoes. Editor Report Life has been extremely busy with the arrival of twin granddaughters in January this year. I spent the first six weeks of their lives with them in the North Shore Hospital Auckland, it was a very trying time but we are please to say they are all doing very well now. Again, keeping in mind, most of the Bleat content is very dependent on member input and relies heavily on someone participating in club runs and activities to take responsibility for writing a report. Club day reports do not have to be very long, just a short paragraphs covering events of the day, it could also cover something amusing a member has said or done, and attaching a few photos. Any other articles of interest that would be suitable for the Bleat are also very welcomed. I would also like to ask members to send a nice photo of your club car and any history along with it. This would make a great feature article and would be of interest throughout the branches. An electronic copy of the Bleat is also sent to our sponsors, CHB information Centre and now copies can be sort through the VCC of NZ website.
