Fairlie on the Thursday before the rally. I was met there by my friend John who was going to accompany me on the Rally as Carol had commitments back home. We collected our rally pack on the Friday night and when we returned to the motor-camp we covered the Dodge up and went to bed.

At 7 00am the next morning, there was a knock at the door of my motor-home and on Sandra Cross opening the door I found it was my navigator John. He asked “have you had a look secross@xtra.co.nz outside yet?”. I did as asked, only to find that there was six inches of snow every- 06 858 9814 where. The Dodge was covered and my surroundings were an amazing sight.

There were 173 cars taking part in the Rally and it was noted by the organisers that there were only 71 Fords competing in this years event and that maybe their popularity is waning. With that, there was a very English well-spoken fellow who surmised that there would not be 71 Fords at the finish. This of course created a lot of banter. There was no Monaco start-line. After the briefing, everyone just wandered off and stood around chatting. There was certainly no rush! We finally got under way and headed inland. Blue sky without a cloud to be seen, the mountains had a complete covering of snow which was a total transformation from the day before. As we gained some height on the first track, the Dodge started to wheel-spin and I thought we Crossing Ashwick Flat. might have to fit the chains. However, we got to the top and only a couple of times over the next two days did the Dodge almost not make it. On the next section, we saw three cars parked up on the side of the road. As we got closer I realised that one of them was Diane and Geoff's car and thinking that they may have broken down, we stopped to help. It was no such thing as a broken down car however it was time for Ginger Wine and Fruit Cake that Diane had made. This explained why there were groups of cars and people parked up at different locations along the route. Lunch stop was at Geraldine. After lunch we wandered off to Pleasant Point, again no rush. We then headed inland and came across our first ford, (sorry there’s that word again!) river crossing. Many river crossings had to be omitted from the course due to heavy rain a few days before. Not having done a crossing in the Dodge before, we were not too sure how it would go. There was a large crowd on the other side. I didn’t want to be the one who didn’t make it. In we went – no problem – the bank up the other side was quite steep. A lady who was taking photos asked if we had a name for the Dodge. I replied that we didn’t and asked “Why?” She replied “I think you should call it “Messiah” as it just seemed to “walk on water”. I said to John that with a name like that, maybe tomorrow we really should lose some weight and leave the jacks, chains and tool box behind”. Little did we know that the day which turned out to be so good was only going to get better. The last Morning tea stop with my friend John, Geoff & stage was across Rollesby Valley Road to the Burkes Pass Highway. This Diane Quarrie, taken outside Geraldine. drive was spectacular with the sun setting on the snow-covered mountain range and the road and paddocks covered in snow. The rally finished at Kimbell Hotel. John and I had a handle of Speights Dark to celebrate the Dodge making it and to also celebrate the end of day one of the rally. As night was falling we jumped into the Dodge and headed into Fairlie, about 6ks away. On our way, John said to me “The lights aren’t very good, are they?”, “No” I said “Did you take the covers off?” “No” said John “I didn’t either”, I said “but the side lights are good though!” Our perfect day one had ended. Sunday saw an 8.30am start. We made it off the line again at 9.15am. Again the organisers had found some incredible roads to travel. Once again we had absolutely perfect weather and having climbed to the top of a range for yet another stop to take in the view of the distant sea and Timaru in the foreground, we partook in more coffee, soup, ginger wine and fruit cake. The second day was just as enjoyable as the first, albeit finishing a little sooner with lunch at 1.00pm at the Fairlie Community Centre. This was followed by paddock events and the prize-giving at the Community Centre at 6.30pm.

The whole weekend was amazing. We were treated to great Southland hospitality, perfect weather and a very well organised but relaxed event. My friend John said as we loaded the Dodge up on the trailer the next day. “That was a Queen’s Birthday that I will never forget”.

My heat-felt thanks go to Diane and Geoff for the introduction to the Irish Rally. To John, my navigator, pit-man, and humorist and of course, to Mr Dodge (alias the Messiah) for2 not letting us down!

Sunday 21st July 2019 — Club Run to Norsewood — organised by Henk and Ella Domper Assemble in Tavistock Place at 11.00am ready for a 80km trip arriving in Norsewood around 1.30pm. We suggest that you bring a chair each for an indoor picnic lunch in one of NZ Natural Clothing Store Rooms at the end of the rally. We will have some hot soup and a bun available in Norsewood. If you have a good appetite we suggest you bring more lunch with you, and would you all bring a soup cup each and your own spoon please. At 2.30pm the doors will be open at the Old Dairy Factory ready for a great show with strings. Afternoon tea provided is included in your $20.00 ticket. Please bring CASH as their are no eftpos facilities available. Then you can sit back, and relax and enjoy a great musical Sunday afternoon.

Chairman's Report The Annual General Meeting went off nicely with our biggest turnout ever (sixty members). Two new committee members came on board – Garry Weaver and Iain Gollan. A third newbie this time is an oldie, fifty plus year veteran Bruce Poole. Eva Gollan has agreed to co-ordinate the meals and catering which has been ably done over recent years by Barry Smales and his wife Lynne. A great deal of gratitude is due for that service. Barry has stepped down and has John Foot, although John will continue off committee with his VIC’s and valuations. Peter McCool, who has been on our committee since day one, is also taking a break. The Branch’s thanks go to all committee members new and old for their service. A proposal was put to appoint an off committee position of Welfare Officer and Sandra was duly elected for this task which will fit in with her publicity role and co-ordinating Daffodil Day. (See elsewhere.) Planning for the Daffodil Day Rally is well under way, having overcome the concerns (perceived or real) of the District Council. We have confirmed the use of James Street, Waipukurau as our assembly and display area. Cars need to arrive from 11 00am to 11.15am on Sunday 25th August. They will be on public display until 1 00pm whereupon there will be a drive of 1¼ - 1½ hours to a country destination. Numbers will be limited to a figure dictated by the venue, having consideration for fire safety, etc. Members intending to participate are advised to register early, and any with veteran cars should talk to me and I’ll organise a short cut. We have now passed the shortest day and can expect warmer weather. Time to take the top down soon and maybe do that on the car also. Happy motoring.

This new position is to assist our club to keep in touch with members who have become unwell, unwell and hospitalized, bereavements or something special (eg silver or golden wedding) to celebrate. To assist Sandra with her new position please advise her if you know of any members who would fit the description above.

Rod’s Rattling's Here we go into another financial year of fun, motoring our old cars around the district of CHB and beyond. The AGM has been held with an excellent turn-out of members on the night with around 60 people needing to be fed at the Waipukurau Bowling Club, who once again did us proud. The results of the election for club positions will be elsewhere in the “Bleat”, but we have some new faces to fill the chairs of those that have had their turn on the committee, and we welcome them. “Thank you” to those of the committee who are retiring. Suffice to say, I have retained the Club Captain’s position this year and hope we can get some enthusiastic members to take the bull by the horns and put on some runs for their fellow members throughout the year. I will be very happy to chat with you if you have an idea for an event, and I have a number of ideas of things we could do or places to go to. It is not up to me and Scarlett to run all the events all year! The branch hasn’t had any runs since Bruce Poole arranged the “Twilight Run” in early May, however, we are looking forward to the “Mid-Winter Christmas Party” that Peter and Suzanne McCool are putting on for us on Sunday 30th June. I guess that it will be ancient history by the time this note comes out in this July issue of the “Bleat”. The bus trip to the “Southward’s Museum” in late July has been cancelled due to insufficient numbers of people committing to the trip. On Sunday 21st July, Henk and Ella Domper are taking us by an interesting route to Norsewood. I feel sure that some of the roads will not have been used by many of our members in the past. Look elsewhere for the details. We still have slots for someone to step up to the plate and arrange a run in both August and September, so have a think about where you would like to take us all. Daffodils?Spring?Lambs? Fluffy ducks? In late August there is the “National VCC Annual Cancer Support Rally” being arranged by Sandra Cross for the branch. She will need marshals and entries, so keep an eye out for what you can do to help her and her committee. Many of us have been touched by cancer at some stage in our lives and it is good to support this worthy cause. This is a showcase of the VCC movement to the general public, so your support is vital. In mid-October, Scarlett and I will be putting on an “Extended Mid-week Run” which has us going into the bowels of Taranaki. More information of what we are about will be forthcoming next month. Save the dates 15th, 16th and 17th October! In mid-August, I shall be attending the AGM of the Vintage Car Club in Greymouth as your branch delegate. This is quite an expense for the branch, so I do hope you read and get something from the reports I write subsequent to attending these affairs. I will no doubt be asked for some report of progress on the “National Vintage only Rally” which Esther Smith and I have stuck our necks out to run in September 2020. There is some enthusiasm for our “Annual Veteran Rally” this coming November being held in Pahiatua. You don’t have to own a veteran car to organise this. A route has already been run by some enthusiastic veteran owners who would like to assist someone from this branch have a go at it. You may even have some fun. Talk to me, as the job has already been partly done for you!

Notes: Messerschmitt made fighter aircraft during, and leading up to, the Second World War for the German Luftwaffe, notably the ME109. KR200 is an upgraded KR175 which was Messerschmitt's first small vehicle. In its day, it broke International speed records for its class along with a 24 hour speed record which it set at 103kph [64mph]. This vehicle depicted is presently on show at Motorcycle Mecca Museum in Invercargill.

It’s also a great opportunity for VCC branches to raise public awareness of the VCC & hopefully attract some new & younger members. Some History of the Targa Car Rally Targa Florio was first run in 1906 and was the brainchild of Vincenzo Florio, a Palermo businessman, who having established the Coppa Florio in 1900 was looking for a true test of a rather recent mechanical marvel the car. Targa is Italian for ‘plate’, possibly referencing a license plate which was often illegally fixed to the first competing Targa Florio race cars in the days leading up to the race, or in commemoration of the first trophy awarded which was a rectangular bronze plate made by Ren Lalique famous for his glass radiator mascots. This trophy ‘Targa’ carried a bas-relief rendering of a racing car against a Sicilian background, with the sky filled in with blue enamel. Targa Florio literally started on the streets of Sicily, near Palermo. Inspired by the original Targa Florio, Mike John the individual who founded Targa New Zealand, dreamt of organising a Targa event in New Zealand. Driven to succeed in bringing Targa New Zealand to life, Mike had to overcome multiple challenges associated with creating a Targa event. He was helped along by an equally determined group of enthusiasts and collectively they turned their dream into reality in 1995 when the inaugural Targa New Zealand was held. The inaugural event crossed the North Island, with over 2,000 kilometres of open road touring stages, with 38 Special Stages run over closed public roads. A special ‘esprit de corps’ became the cornerstone of the 1995 Targa New Zealand and all future events, inspiring camaraderie amongst the competitors even though they were battling one another for the prized Targa trophy. Targa New Zealand was an instant success, hailed by the specialist motoring press as “the stuff that legends are made of”. In April 2008, Mike passed the torch on to Peter who’s focus on safety, effi8 ciency, improved race systems and processes have made Targa NZ a world class motorsport event.

A day to remember —The notes with the glass plate negative describe this as the official opening of Te Mata Peak Road, Havelock North, Hawke's Bay—The road was opened in the mid-1930s.

Veteran Vehicles (VET) Motor Vehicles constructed prior to 31 December 1918.

Vintage Vehicles (VV) Motor Vehicles constructed between 1 January 1919 and 31 December 1931.

Post Vintage Vehicles (PVV) Motor Vehicles constructed between 1 January 1932 and 31 December 1945.

Post War Vehicles (PWV) Motor Vehicles constructed between 1 January 1946 and 31 December 1960.

Post 1960 Vehicles (P60V) Motor Vehicles constructed between 1st January 1961 and 31st December 1980, such vehicles to be known as Post 1960 Vehicles.

Post 1980 Vehicles (P80V) Motor Vehicles constructed on or after the 1st January 1981 provided that no vehicle is deemed eligible for this category until the day immediately following the 30th anniversary of its original date of construction as determined in accordance with Section 2 of the Club Vehicle Technical Code, such vehicles to be known as Post 1980 Vehicles. Factory Built, and Historic Racing Vehicles (HRV) Historic Racing Vehicles, which are at least in their thirtieth year since their year of original construction, plus Factory built racing cars no longer in production.

Period Specials Period Specials (PS1) Group One is a vehicle which has been built up solely utilising period production components within the periods represented in A, B, C, D, E & F these Production Modified vehicles (PM) will be grouped as either B4 or B5. Period Specials (PS2) Group. Two is a vehicle which has been constructed using some major period parts to imitate a design of a particular period. These constructed vehicles must be grouped as either C4 (and must be a very accurate imitation of an original vehicle) or C5 (period style of vehicles). A new vehicle closely representing a period style would be a C5.

The first National Veteran Rally was hosted by the South Canterbury Branch in 1975. “This year South Canterbury will again be your host”. Cars, Motorcycles and Trucks, all over 100 years old, will meet in Timaru as a celebration of over a century of motoring.
