Classic car builder Dave Brown with a Jaguar XKSS that will soon be sent to a buyer in the UK. The father of Formula One motor racing driver Lewis Hamilton will soon have an Invercargill-built car in his lounge in England. Anthony Hamilton’s Jaguar XKSS has had a fascinating journey since leaving Dave Brown’s Invercargill workshop in 2013. Brown builds recreations of sport/racing cars manufactured in the 1950-60s, specialising in the Ford GT 40s and C and D-type Jaguars. The cars are certified for use on public roads. “I call them recreations of the originals, right down to the last nut and bolt,” he said. “We build the whole car exactly as they were in the day. We don’t call them lookalikes.” Brown originally built the XKSS for a Welsh dentist’s collection of 400 cars. After a few years the collection was bought by Jaguar UK. The manufacturing giant took particular interest in the XKSS because it was planning to make replicas of the model it built in 1957. “The car [XKSS] we sent over, they stripped it down and copied the parts [for the replicas],” Brown said.

Dave Brown—Invercargill—Classic Car Builder—by Jamie Searle “We did all the homework on the car here in Invercargill, we built the car, then they copied the car’s parts to built their replica cars. “I rang the director of Jaguar after they got the first one built and about the third question he said was, ‘where did you get your information from to build the car? “They scanned the car and couldn’t believe how accurate the body shape was.” Brown said in the 28 years he had been building classic cars he had collected piles of drawings and information on them from 12 contacts around the world. Some of his sources had worked for Jaguar or were closely associated to it. After Jaguar UK built its nine replica cars, the Invercargill-built XKSS was put back together and parked up for a couple of years before being sold to Anthony Hamilton, father of Lewis Hamilton. About three months ago Hamilton was put in touch with Brown’s work associate in England, Jerry Bowen, to arrange for the XKSS to be repainted and titivated. Replacements for missing parts were sent from Brown’s workshop. Brown sells cars through Bowen. They reckon Hamilton should have his XKSS back in six weeks. It will then be placed on a plinth in his lounge. As well as building cars, Brown and his two staff make “rolling cars” which are sent to buyers in a close-to completion state. Buyers of these cars want to finish the vehicle off themselves by installing the motor or having it painted. Brown said in the 28 years of building classic cars he had built 22 C-type Jaguars, was in the process of building his ninth D-Type Jaguar and had made 16 Ford GT 40s. Virtually all parts are made at his workshop. A finished car costs about $550,000. It took 3500 hours to make a car and half that time to create a “rolling car”. Apart from selling two cars to Southland buyers in earlier years, all of Browns’ customers live in the UK, Europe, United States and Australia. Restoration shops in the United States and UK bought parts off him. Brown and Jerry Bowen have known each other for 20 years. Bowen is a design and race car engineer after working for Lotus Racing in the 1970s. Brown does not advertise his work. He said customers recommend him to their friends in classic car and motor racing circles overseas. “It’s all referrals in the UK. They [customers] go to race meets, talk to each other, and they say, ‘ where did you get that from’,” Brown said. “The big thing is trust, cars and parts have got to be 100 per cent correct.”

Please meet in Tavistock Place, Waipukarau at 9.00am ready to leave at 9.30am sharp. We will travel out on Farm Road to the Motere-Omakere turn off to Omakere. Travel the Pourerere road a few kms to Clareinch turnoff on the left. This road is metal which takes us on to the Mangakuri beach. I have asked Margaret Duncan my sister who has a beach house at Mangakuri to seek permission from the present manager for us to drive past the homestead to a privately owned church, originally the Williams Family. We will then head off onto Kairakau Beach where we will have our BYO lunch—“Recreation time”—Please bring all items you will need for enjoyable lunch break, walk or swim. We have the use of the beachfront hall if the weather is not so favourable on the day. I am also trying to get a local person to give us a rundown of the history of the area. After our lunch break we will travel back on Kairakau Rd to Mangarara Rd, turn off just before the Patangata Bridge. Travel on this road to end, Greg Hart will be giving us a rundown on the running of his Mangarara Lodge and Lake recreation operations. Travel back out to the Patangata Hotel just over bridge. I am sure that club members will find some old photos on the walls of interest and other things. Beach run will end there.

VEHICLE IDENTITY CARDS (UPDATE) January 2021 There has been some more minor changes to the Vehicle Identity Card application forms. The forms that you have or are now using could you please make sure that the date in the top right hand corner (below the page number) is as follows: Pages 1-2-3 are dated 09/2019, page 4 dated 01/2021, Page 5 dated 09/2019 and pages 6 and 7 are dated 10/2020. The main change is that now we require photographs of all avail able identifying serial numbers i.e. Chassis/frame, engine, body, Vin and any other identifying features and copies of any paper work that is relevant to your vehicle. There is only one photograph/copy of the above required but we still require 3 photographs of the finished vehicle. If a car or comer cial vehicle please take the photograph on ¾ view and a motorcycle taken side on. Thursday 18th to Sunday 21st February 2021—ART DECO FESTIVAL Come to Napier and join the Hawkes Bay VCC for Art Deco 2021 from February 18th to 21st. Kindly sponsored again this year by Euro City Ltd. In 2021 the Featured Group will be Veteran Motor Vehicles (all will be over 100 years old). We are expecting 50 plus Veterans and already have 25 Veteran entries as at 10th September 2020. Cars, commercials, motorcycles, high-wheelers, steam, electric and petrol. Veterans entered already include an 1895 Velo Benz, 1903/4 Oldsmobiles (3), De Dion, Calcott, Hupmobile, GWK, Dodge (3), Sears, L’etoile, Darracq (2), Cadillac, Mitchell, Holly, Briscoe, New Pick and 5 Model T Fords. 2021 will be the 90th anniversary of the 1931 Napier Earthquake. We want to get as many EQ survivor cars to attend the 2021 Art Deco Festival as possible. A commemorative banner or similar will be presented to all qualifying vehicles. To qualify your vehicle must have been in Napier or Hastings at the time of the Earthquake. Please contact me if you have such a vehicle or know someone who has. The same applies if you own or know of any First Response Vehicles that may have been present during the Earthquake (eg Ambulance, Fire Engine, Police, Military). For 2021 the main annual rally is again on Friday and we plan to have a touring run plus a picnic lunch at a great lunch venue. On the Saturday we will have a morning tea, a car show and popular choice at the HBVCC clubrooms, followed by the grand parade. Sunday events include breakfast at the HBVCC clubrooms and the Gatsby picnic in the afternoon. There are many other events offered by Art Deco Trust on the Friday and Saturday nights. Come and join the other 180 plus club eligible vehicles we expect to enter the 2021 Event. If you are entering a Veteran there are special additional events for you on the Wednesday and Thursday of Art Deco Week. If you plan to attend these please plan to arrive in Napier on the Tuesday. Otherwise we suggest you plan to arrive in Napier on Thursday 20th so you can attend the Dinner at the Clubrooms that evening. We have prizes for the best dressed couples again this year. Chairman's Reportâ€”February 2021 Christmas is now behind us, in fact a month ago I trust you all had a good break with family and friends. I spent Christmas with my sisters family, stayed overnight and visited friends in Fielding and Longburn. Another big thank you to Eva Gollan for the excellent venue at River Park event centre with the new glazed doors now in place it was very cosy and should be nice in the winter. Everyone is impressed with this event centre and our Christmas party and a Gymkana is booked for the 2nd Saturday in December 11th. Rod McKenzie has been itching to secure a venue for this event, this will fit the bill perfectly. By the time you read this the silent moving evening at Oruawharo Homestead and Wheels with attitude in Dannevirke will be over. It is normally a good social event with lots to see and friends to catch up with and with the $2 entry fee should suit all pockets. February is a busy month with Art Deco Rail Car visit to Waipukurau and Iain Gollan Beach visit. I would like a volunteer to come on board, to help with the Night Rally in April. It is not a big job, find a soup and bun venue ($7) and then another venue for the final dinner ($25). I have always had good support from local businesses and the run is not difficult to organise once you have the Soup and Dinner Venueâ€™s sorted secured. On the car front the Chrysler has been driven around Hatuma Lake and the aim is to put a few miles on before Art Deco Weekend. We took the Car to Australia in 1970 with only 400 miles on a new engine and with a bit of polishing and cleaning it will be all ready to go. Enjoy yourselves in the next month and keep safe out there.

Rod’s Rattling's—February 2021 Three or four CHB VCC members attended the New Year “Gumboot Rally” in Taihape, but I haven’t heard much about it as yet. Scarlett and I attended Len Haycock’s New Year’s Day picnic run at Bulls where about 50 car-loads of people visited Lee’s Bush where we chatted to others and had lunch. On 10th January about 15 cars joined with Wayne McDonagh travelling out to Wanstead to take in the Polo which was quite interesting as most of us had not seen the sport before. Thank you Wayne, that was something of a treat. Coming up on 14th February, we will be taking a drive out to the coast and visiting both Mangakuri and Kairakau Beaches where we will have lunch on the seaside carpark. Iain and Eva Gollan will be hosting the event and have another couple of interesting stops for us along the way. The Art Deco weekend will be upon us later in February and we will be involved as a branch meeting the Railcar at the Railway Station and transporting visitors to the aerodrome to see the DC3 from Napier which will be in attendance [unless something untoward puts paid to the visit], and quite possibly some other aircraft too.. More information on this plan will come to pass later this month, so watch your emails. On the weekend of 20th March, a number of Model T owners are descending on CHB and will be visiting places of interest in the district which John and Margaret Cleland have arranged. There are few other events noted for the rest of the year, and it would be great if someone would commit to entertaining the rest of us taking us all somewhere, or perhaps even arranging something a little competitive. However, John and Shirley Foot are planning a visit for us to Pongaroa sometime soon. Bruce Poole and his as-yet-to-be named sidekick will be plotting the Annual Twilight Rally around the end of April. Scarlett and I will be taking another mid-week three-day odyssey to places of interest west of Central Hawke’s Bay around the middle of October. Initial plans are presently being drawn up. There have been a few changes to the stables of some of our members in recent weeks. Ray and Adrienne Freemantle’s Hillman Hunter has found a new home up Rotorua way, Cox’s 1914 Overland is now near Warkworth, Brian and Janice Malcolm found a buyer for their 1968 Mercedes, and Brian Connor sold his 1972 Mini Clubman. Bruce Poole has been frustrated with getting his 1930 Chrysler 77 back on the road with its new engine not wanting to perform, but it is now going well I believe. John Cleland has been having his Ford Model A engine refreshed in Palmerston North, and it is now back up and running with a couple of hundred miles to its credit. It had better behave as John and Margaret are heading to Christchurch in it very shortly. And last week I accompanied one of our members picking up a veteran Model T from the South Island. This will be a wonderful addition to the CHB fleet, and you may possibly get to cast your eyes upon it at Kairakau this month.

New Year’s Day run to Bulls—by Rod and Scarlett McKenzie Every year for some years now, Len and Gladys Haycock from Bulls have arranged a picnic run somewhere around the Rangitikei district for their Vintage Car Club friends. Usually in the past it has been pretty low-key with everyone doing a few miles and sitting down at a convenient location somewhere to eat their lunch and have a yarn with other members. It was no different this year as the fifty car loads of folk assembled in the Main Street of Bulls in the late morning. We had elected to drive down in our 1987 Holden VL Commodore for the day leaving home at a sensible hour. At Dannevirke we got in behind anKen Eason's brother Rob from the Manawatu turned up in this other three elderly cars which we guessed were very original 1954 Ford Custom line, the last of the flat-head heading the same way, a mid-60’s Wolseley powered Ford's. 6/110, a similarly aged Sunbeam Rapier, and a Mazda MX5 which turned out to be a 1991 model, thus being recognised as a 30 year old vehicle on New Year’s Day. We didn’t have the only Aussie car there as there was also an early 1970’s Holden Statesman and two Chrysler Valiants, one from the early 1970’s and a VC model from around 1967 being driven by Bruce Ardell from the Wanganui branch. There was a huge selection of vehicles with the only repeat offenders being three 1930 Model A Ford Tourers and a 1930 Town Sedan similar to ours. The oldest vehicle to turn out was a 1908 Cadillac driven by Laurie and Wendy Cocker from Rongatea which seems to arrive at almost every When a bonnet goes up, all and sundry come along for a look, event possible. The local branch of the Wolseley Car Club had been invited along and there were in this instance it was a late 1920's Dodge Victory Six. several of these middle-class English vehicles there too, ranging from a mid-1930’s example to a couple from the mid 1960’s. Another couple of interesting cars that arrived were two Citroen 2CV’s one being a recent purchase by Ian and Sarah Howell from Dannevirke who we have met several times at the shared dinner evening we have with the Manawatu Branch in September.

Another car of interest was a c.1960 Morris Minor which, judging by its number plate, was resident in Hawke’s Bay in 1964. It was beautifully presented in black and was running a 997cc engine which had been brought up to “Mini Cooper S” specifications. It was sitting on wider wheels as supplied with the commercial examples in the early 1970’s thus allowing radial tyres to be fitted.

New Year’s Day run to Bulls—by Rod and Scarlett McKenzie The luncheon destination was the Lees Reserve about 15km from Bulls, a venue worth calling at if you have the time, as it has splendid bush walks, magnificent native trees and interesting grounds. In the spring the field where we were able to park is covered in daffodils, and there are good toilet facilities too. No parking on the daffodil part of the grounds in the spring obviously. After lunch and a yarn with a good number of the folk from the other side of the hills, we packed up and headed for home. “It was a long way to go for lunch” my navigator wryly stated, but it was good to get out and catch up with a few of the friends we have made within the Vintage Car Club movement over the last number of years.

We look forward to being down in the Manawatu again early in February for their Annual Veteran Rally which I have been informed is heading out Sanson way. There are great roads down there, and as long as the quieter rural roads of the district are used, the Veteran cars have little trouble dodging errant modern vehicles that progress at a much quicker rate of knots than the veteran cars.

Sunday 10th January 2021—Car Club Run to Wanstead Polo Grounds Championship Games—by Geoff Kelly Wayne organised a car run to the Wanstead Polo grounds. The day dawned grey and drizzly and looked doubtful as to whether it was going to be a good day to get the car out of the garage for anything, but by 11.00am it brightened up so we headed off to Tavistock Place to meet up with a dozen or so other cars waiting to head off on the short run out to the Wanstead Polo Ground. After a brief pause at the turn off to let everyone catch up just past the Wanstead Pub, we arrived at the ground around midday. Parking on the slope behind the covered pavilion was plentiful which allowed us to park as a group and we all wandered down to get seated in the stand. A game was already under way as we settled in so we were all just trying to come to terms with polo rules and terminology. Wayne had given us a brief run down on these before we left but there were plenty more questions to be asked as the afternoon moved on. As it turned out, Waynes son in law, Simon, is a member/ player for the Wanstead club and his daughter, Lisa was on hand to field the many questions concerning how it all worked which made a huge difference to enjoying the viewing. We learned that the horses are “ponies” and the games are played in four “chukkas” and a whole host of other terms and rules. The Club very kindly provided nibbles for the VCC members as well as having hot food and refreshments available for purchase so we were spoiled for choice.

The weather was perfect for the duration of the day and the action on field got faster and more exciting as time went on. Some members left earlier because of other commitments but there were still half a dozen VCC cars there until the end around 5.00pm when the final game ended and we then cruised home. I think Polo has found a new bunch of fans and I’m sure all who attended would join me in thanking Wayne for organising the run and also the Wanstead Polo Club for being great hosts and making us welcome at their fantastic facility. I can already feel a return trip in the air maybe for next years tournament.

New Year 2021â€”Gumboot Rallyâ€”Organised & written by Bruce Poole Over the past few years several members of the Central Hawkes Bay Vintage Car Club have travelled over to Taihape for what is famously known as the gumboot Rally. I checked with Robert Bain who has helped organise all the Rallies to date and he advised that he would not be able to organise the event this year due to health reasons. Members from Wanganui branch decided to sort it out rather than let it laps, so accommodation was booked, in a large four bedroom house. As in the past we have been meeting at Woodville at 10.00am. So in speaking to Jim Spicer he told me that he was not working on Thursday the 31st December and 1st of January, I said to him that I will see you in Woodville on Friday morning and why was he having Thursday off. About 2 hours later he rang me and said he had looked at the calendar Thursday is the 31st so he hurried his packing, checked oil and water and then drove to Woodville on Thursday 31st. After meeting up and had tea, coffee etc, it was over the hill, all on sealed roads to have lunch at Glyn and Kathy Clements home in Kimbolton. Glyn had organised a run from Kimbolton to Taihape via some good metal roads with great country views. After settling into the motel, it was off to the Greten Hotel for dinner and to meet up with the others. I ordered a Rodeo Burger and honestly when it came out it was 8 inches tall 200ml with 3 25ml patties, eggs, bacon and all the trimmings with chips all covered in melted cheese. Kathy Clements had also ordered one and took a photo to send to Joyce (editor of the Bleat). I could not get through it all and a doggy bag was required, this was my lunch the next day. We all meet at the Domain at 9.30am (about 30 cars) and travelled on roads around Taihape and came out on the main Taihape Waiouru Road to turn left into the old main road to Taihape to end up at River Lodge on the Rangitaiki River for Lunch. After lunch the organiser took the afternoon run instructions with him so it was follow the leader, word of mouth and then ended up near Utiku and then back along the main road to the BBQ at the end of the run. The Voss's from Wanganui Won the Rally. As usual everyone gets some prizes and we all have a great BBQ dinner with good fellowship. On the Saturday morning John and Shirley Foot had organised a run back home which went over some of the roads used on the main run the day before, we finally ended up on the Gentle Annie Road about 8kms North of Ngamatea Station. This is where the trouble started!! Johns Falcon lost a lot of water during the steep climbs and Tony Prebensen's Model A lost some water. We tried some cattle troughs, a wool shed and finally Tony found a stream to get some water. In the meantime two camper vans stopped, lucky as they don't normally stop for people but they said we looked quite safe and they had some water aboard and filled the radiators before Tony had got back. Lunch at Blowhard Reserve (Lawrence Road) and then motored home. On the trip were Glyn and Kathy Clements, John and Shirley Foot, Lynn and Sandra Cross, Jimmy Spicer, Tony Prebensen and myself. A big thank you to all for a great three days. We hope to see you again next year along with a few more CHB Members.

Wheels with Attitude—Dannevirke January—2021—by Rod McKenzie About 20 cars from the CHB Branch ventured to Dannevirke for their annual "Wheels-with-Attitude" day. It was fine and warm and the folks wandered through and around 800 vehicles on display. Vehicles on show varied from a 1908 Cadillac to the latest Mustang and Lexus, and in amongst these were a selection of vintage cars, hot rods, and huge American tanks of the 1950's to 1980's. Out for the first time in weeks was our Chairman Bruce Poole with his Chrysler 77 Roadster with the new motor installed and running well. Also joining the group was our Club Captain's nephew with his new-to-the-road 1964 Holden EH Sedan.
