1954 Cadillac Series 60 Special—Article by Rod McKenzie When CHB VCC Branch Chairman Bruce Poole first shifted to Waipukurau in the mid-1970’s he owned a 1954 Cadillac Fleetwood Limousine similar to this 1954 model shown below. It had been imported by the New Zealand Railways for use by Executives and Politicians of the time. It was a huge vehicle with 332 c.i. OHV engine and had a prodigious thirst. The car had a 12 volt electrical system, but with two six volt batteries mounted in front of the radiator, which Bruce converted to a single 12 volt battery. The fuel filler was under the left hand tail-light, with exhaust exiting through the rear bumper. Several cars of the time had their fuel fillers within the tail-lights being a number of GM products, and the Humber Super Snipe and Hawk from the 1960’s. A group of Bruce’s cobber's, including the present CHB Club Captain, travelled with him one time to a Cadillac Rally of some kind near Hastings and they attempted to drive up Te Mata Peak. Some of the corners were a trial as they were a bit sharp for this very long vehicle.

1954 Cadillac Series 60 Special—Article by Rod McKenzie The car had a four speed automatic transmission and had been converted to right-hand-drive by the railways department by turning the steering column upside down. The electric windows, a new idea for the time, had the controls in the door, but there were still four buttons on the left front door as for LHD. The front seat had electric adjustments, also a new idea for the time.

The NZ Railways must have imported numerous examples of these large and expensive cars for the use of executives and politicians during the mid-1950’s, as there are examples of the 1956 model also in the country. On July 24, 1701, Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac founded Detroit. The man who inspired the name of the Cadillac Automobile Company was a French military leader who earned recognition for his exploration of the Great Lakes. Seeking to establish a settlement south of Lake Huron, Cadillac and his voyageurs left Montreal and traveled for two months before reaching the Detroit River. There, he claimed an area along the river for its fertile land and strategic location for defense and trade. Cadillac named the settlement Fort Ponchartrain du Détroit, and the site began to grow through the fur trade.

Cadillac left Detroit in 1710 to govern France’s Louisiana territory, and the settlement was later incorporated as a city in 1806. While Cadillac never returned to Detroit, he was memorialized two centuries later by Henry Leland and fellow investors of Cadillac, who named their company after him and adopted his family crest for their logo.

CANCER DAY ON WAIPUKURAU’s MAIN STREET For the past few years the CHB VCC branch has supported our local Cancer Society by turning up with a few cars on Ruataniwha St to give some “atmosphere” to their day and also to deliver a few bunches of daffodils to the residents of Woburn Home and Mt Herbert Home. It would be great if we could have some folk park their vehicles there for this day. This is over and above the day being arranged for Sunday 22nd August. Eight or ten of our older or special vehicles would be appreciated. And if you can spare the morning of Friday 27th August to have your vehicle there, maybe assist where you can and liaise with the public we could have some fun. The cars will be parked in front of Ruahine Motors Ford garage and the yellow coffee stand. Chairman's Report—August 2021 Last month I thought winter was finally here in Central Hawkes Bay. How wrong I was. It has been so mild with 14-15 degrees during the day and with only a couple of frosts. Oruawhare homestead was an excellent venue for our July club meeting and meal. The food and service was excellent with some up and coming waiters and waitresses doing a great job. Diane Quarrie, NZ President of the VCC club, and CHB club member, presented a video on the newly proposed logo. After much discussion and debate it was agreed that the fern in the logo should be all silver and the words, “vintage car club” should be at the bottom and have NZ included. The logo presented went to the vote and lost, however with the changes asked for, the outcome maybe different. It will be interesting to hear other comments at the National AGM. I am looking forward to the National AGM in Christchurch and leave at 10.00am Thursday 12th August 2021 and will be back on Monday 16th August. I now have the painted wheels and new tyres for the Humber, however one of the hubcaps which I have has Humber Sceptre written on it and all four are too large, so I need four caps. “Can anyone Help with this please”. The run to Dannevirke organised by Wayne McDonagh was well worth going to. About 30 cars and 60 people and two new members from Dannevirke signing up to join in. When talking to Wayne later in the day he said he really needs to put on his thinking cap to find suitable visits for next year. Wayne is also organising a car show at the Waipukurau Club in a couple of weeks time. Kaye Carswell and her team have everything in hand for the Cancer Society Car Show and Rally to be held on 22nd of August, so get all your friends along to join in for a great cause. I have started organising the meeting in Dannevirke Wednesday 15th September along with members of the Manawatu branch. The Manawatu Branch have a new Chairman and a working committee so we trust that the branch is back to full working order. The Annual Veteran Rally will be held on Saturday 20th November and is being organised by myself with the help of Neil Malcolm with lots of advice from our very experienced club captain Rod McKenzie. This report comes around all too quickly and I have to juggle around Mya as she has started a course at EIT today, 27th July. She really enjoyed her first day as she said I am not making coffee and serving hot pies for the rest of my working days. Keep at it girl! It was very sad to hear Colleen Duncan, partner of Ken Eason is in hospital recovering after a very nasty accident. We are all wishing you a very speedy recovery. Vintage Car Club of NZ—Rebranding Proposal For those NOT at the July dinner and meeting at Oruawharo, a video presentation was given by the President of the VCC of NZ and CHB member Diane Quarrie. She explained that the VCC Executive Committee have spent 2 years designing a proposed replacement Vintage Car Club logo. Whether it is adopted or not will be decided at the next National VCC AGM. Our branch has been asked to vote on which one we prefer, and the result of that vote will be taken by Bruce Poole to the AGM. Please fill in the section below and get it back to me. Rod’s Rattling's—August 2021 Wayne McDonagh arranged a visit to three sheds in the Dannevirke area a couple of weeks ago which was very well supported by our branch members, and also some “hanger’s-on” from around Dannevirke. These sheds had to be seen to be believed, and got better and better as the afternoon progressed. No doubt there will be a report and some photos in the “Bleat” to give the non-attendees some idea of what they missed. Congratulations to Wayne on a well-planned adventure down Dannevirke way. Thirty three cars were counted at one stage with close to sixty people along for the day. Bruce Poole will be representing Central Hawke’s Bay as the branch delegate at the National VCC AGM in Christchurch in August and will report back to the branch on the goings on of the meeting in due course. On 22nd August the National body has organised for all, or most, branches to support the “Daffodil/Cancer Rally” throughout the country. Kaye Carswell and her group of helpers have this well in hand with a car display in James St similar to what we did a couple of years ago, and a run to an interesting venue out in the country. On 29th August Wayne McDonagh is organising a “Car Show” based at, and supported by, the Waipukurau Club in Russell St. It will be catering for in excess of 50 cars, and will include both vintage-type vehicles and hot-rods from the Dannevirke area. Due to the room available there could be restrictions on what type of vehicles are on display, eg later models and Japanese produced vehicles may be excluded. In September Neil and Pat Malcolm are planning a run for the branch in what is at this stage a non-specified run to goodness knows where. I do love some mystery in life. The three day rally to Whanganui and Ohakune that Scarlett and I are planning for mid-October, is coming together well. At this stage we have 32 committed folk coming along with about seventeen cars. The first page of instructions which will get entrants to the first morning tea stop will be emailed out to them all in early October. If you don’t get the instruction sheet give me a yell, as I may have forgotten you were coming, or perhaps you had forgotten to tell me. The branch “Annual Veteran Rally” for 20th November will be co-ordinated by Bruce Poole who could do with an assistant. More information will become available in due course. And that brings us to the end of the year. A venue has already been booked for our Christmas and End-ofyear party being held at the “River Park Event Centre” at Tamumu on 11 th December. There is a stage there for us to use and I hear a whisper that “Dolly Parton and Friends” could be one of the guest performers. Now that should bring in the crowds! There is some chat about a beach run in January for the branch, and in early February Keith and Jean Hopping have something in the wind for entertaining the troops. Speaking of the New Year, have you got your entry in for the National Rally in New Plymouth in January? This will be an event to remember [for all the right reasons we hope, as there has been as Covid scare in Taranaki this past week].

PS: So you’re sitting at home and it is cold and frosty outside, the TV has only boring programmes and you would like some entertainment. Go to Google and print in “It helps to be mad” 1966 and you will find 10 minutes or so of a film from the Haast Rally of 1965 in colour. It is worth a look. Nostalgia in spades. It is amazing how young these people were then, including our chairman if you can spot him. 11

October 13th, 14th, 15th 16th 2021—Extended Mid-Week Run for CHB VCC Organised by Rod and Scarlet McKenzie Scarlett and Rod are putting together another mid -week trip, this time into the bowels of the Central North Island area in mid-October. We will be away for three nights and four days of motoring with a few interesting visits and things to see and do. This run will obviously entail some fairly full days of motoring [possibly around 300km per day!], so it will be more suitable for P45, P60’s and P80’s vehicles, but that is not to say that you shouldn’t drive your Vintage or PV vehicle on the run. Many of the roads we will travel on have been traversed by us in the past in our Ford Model T, so most entrants could bring any vehicle they like, providing they know it is up to the journey. You will need to have a good road map or electronic GPS at hand City of Whanganui when you start the run. And it will be more convenient if you pack a picnic lunch in the car before you leave home. The run will be in the form of a “Tour” and will be non-competitive. Visits will include shopping and sight-seeing in Marton, Hunterville, Whanganui, Jerusalem, Pipiriki, Raetihi, and Horopito, Ohakune, and a drive up to Turoa. The Motel we intend staying at in Wanganui for the first night [Wed 13 th] is: Burwood Motel Free phone: 0800 20 20 63 [Quote CHBVCC Rod $120.00 per night.] And on the second and third nights [14th and 15th] at Ohakune is: Ohakune Court Motel Free phone: 0800 288 289 [Quote OCT21CARS from $105.00] You are advised to have your bookings done well in advance, but you are free to stay at any other motel or camping ground as you see fit. It is imperative that you phone your booking in to each motel so you can tell them you are on this trip as we have spoken with each of them and secured our group a favorable rate. You will, of course, need to budget for all of your smokos, tea/coffee stops, lunches, your evening meals, and other motoring costs, etc. You must confirm with Rod and Scarlett [ rod.mckenzie.wpk@xtra.co.nz ] that you will be coming on the trip so they then know how many instruction sheets to print out and also to advise people, at any of the stops we intend making, how many of our folk are likely to turn up. Members please note that the location of the sheds we visited and names of our hosts are not published in this article to protect their property and privacy, however our members expressed their gratitude to each of our hosts on the day of the visit for their hospitality and kindness, and for the privilege of viewing their amazing collections. I also apologise for no photos of the first shed visit in this article at the shed of our newest members. On a cool but fine Sunday morning 18th July approx. 25 members and 14 vehicles assembled at Tavistock Place ready to depart for the drive south leaving at 9.00am. We all stopped briefly at the carpark opposite the Mangatara Hotel to re group with our members from Norsewood and Dannevirke district. Wayne gave us all verbal instructions of the locations of the sheds we were to visit and so headed off in convoy to the first shed and hosted by our newest members in the district. Here we saw a collection of projects of a wide variety of vehicles spanning approx. 30 years from 1930’s onward. Some inside, some outside. Our host “fired’ up the Willys in the shed. Sounded really grunty due to running a race engine from a top performing power boat from the USA. Then onto our second shed which was a recently completed construction containing a huge collection of Americana and automobilia collectables. Immaculate collection of vehicles and perhaps the biggest display of signage I have ever seen displayed (see photos) I can imagine the huge effort it must have been to recently move and set up all of this collection in the new shed. By the time we got to the Citizens and Services Club for lunch our numbers had grown to at least 50 people so we packed into the dining room for a buffet type finger food lunch that was The collection of automobilia signs enjoyed by all. After in shed 2 was most impressive. lunch and refreshments we drove south to our next stop at the most amazing “shed or sheds “ I have ever seen. The entry space to the main display areas is a replica of the first workshop built by the Davidson family in USA and where the Legendary Harley 13 Davidson motor cycle story began.

SUNDAY 18TH JULY 2021—SHED RAID TO DANNEVIRKE—written by Ken Lyons The collection and display is awesome from the three immaculate restored Kenworth trucks to the extensive motorcycle collection including Harley Davidson machines of all types. I have not seen such an extensive collection of restored petrol pumps and workshop tools and equipment from yester-year any where else. Fully equipped functioning workshop spaces were also a feature of these numerous shed spaces. A picture says a thousand words so enjoy the photos which are far more descriptive than my text. Many thanks from all to our hosts, and to Wayne McDonagh for his time and effort organising these really enjoyable shed visits.

Saturday 26th June 2021—Studebakers Hill Holders Rally organised by Michael and Vicky Harding

Based in Waipukurau, The Rally started on Saturday the 26th of June at 9.30 am from Thornton Lodge Motel. Fifteen cars mostly Studebakers, including a T Bird plus two other moderns and thirty Studebaker members. First stop was at Back Paddock Lakes for morning tea on Speedy Road. The Entrants enjoyed the facilities and hospitality put on by the Lake Owners and Vicky Harding. I had to round them up and send them off to the next stop, as they were enjoying the venue too much.

The Rally then wound its way through picturesque Central Hawke’s Bay countryside to Norsewood, stopping at the wool shop. Here there was craft to admire and NZ woollen products for sale for discounted prices. Next stop was Lunch at the historic Oruawharo Homestead at 12.30 pm, including a history lesson and a tour of the Homestead. On the road again to highway 50 and through Onga Onga Village to the pistol shooting range, which is about 4km from Waipawa. Most of the rally entrants enjoyed a chance to shoot 9mm and 22 calibre hand guns for the first time. The women’s scores were on average better than the men’s.

Most had finished by 4.00pm, then regrouped to attend the dinner at the Leopard Hotel, where a Buffet dinner including desert was provided.

Andre and Doreen de Haan won the rally being the only ones to get all the questions correct, and received the coveted Hill Holders trophy, and the enjoyment of organising the next rally. Julie Ward won the women’s pistol shooting, and Neville Harper the men’s. Both received a cash prize which paid for their ammunition. (Julie put 6 rounds into the bull’s eye, to have the top score) With that kind of accuracy it would not pay to upset her!!

Wanted 1947 Vauxhall Restoration My name is Colin Potts, and I am restoring a 1947 Vauxhall 10, and the starter motor has packed up on me, so I was wondering if you, or any of the club members could help me to locate another one? the part no is M418GR27 it is a 6 volt starter, and I'm told that the later model 12 volt wyvern starter motor would fit ok.
