Alice Ramsey was 22 years old in 1909 when she made history, becoming the first woman to drive across the United States from coast-to-coast. She, along with two sisters-in-law and a friend, left New York City on June 9 and arrived in San Francisco on August 7. In total, the trip took 59 days, and Ramsey drove a total of 3,800 miles. Ramsey began driving the previous year, when her husband bought her an automobile after a vehicle raced past her at 30 miles an hour, scaring her horse. She immediately took to the wheel and logged 6,000 miles around their New Jersey home and entered an endurance drive to and from Montauk.

Her driving abilities caught the eye of a representative from Maxwell Motors, who offered her an all-expensespaid trip across the country to demonstrate the quality and durability of their automobile. Maxwell provided a dark green 1909 DA touring car. It was a four-cylinder 30 horsepower vehicle with two bench seats and a removable pantasote roof. Ramsey’s companions for the trip were sisters-in-law Nettie Powell and Margaret Atwood, both in their 40s, and her 16-year-old friend Hermine Jahns. Each woman received a primer on car safety and wore hats and goggles while on the road. They also covered long dresses with dusters to protect themselves and their clothing from dirt and dust.

There were a myriad of challenges during the trip. While the company would advertise later that the Maxwell performed without a hint of trouble, the women actually dealt with 11 different episodes of flat tires and mechanical breakdowns. They also faced bad weather and even worse roads in many states, the state of Iowa alone took 12 days to traverse. Maps proved to be unreliable and not designed for coast-to-coast travel. Many landmarks used to provide direction either disappeared or changed in appearance, leading to many episodes of backtracking. Sometimes, Maxwell hired local drivers familiar with the area to travel with Ramsey and her companions and lead them westward. When they made it to California, they marvelled at the redwoods before driving onto a ferry to cross San Francisco Bay. Before arriving at their destination. Maxwell surrounded Ramsey and her three companions with a fleet of their models before giving a parade in their honour. The San Francisco Chronicle heralded their arrival with the headline: “Pretty Women Motorists Arrive After Trip Across the Continent.” Ramsey returned to New Jersey by train after her fleeting brush with fame. She and her husband raised two children. She also continued driving coast-to-coast and lost count after her thirtieth trip. Finally, on the hundredth anniversary of Ramsey’s cross-country drive, on June 9, 2009, a Seattle, Washington woman by the name of Emily Anderson left New York City on a quest to replicate the achievement. She drove a 1909 Maxwell that had been rebuilt by her father to commemorate the drive’s centennial. The Maxwell Motor Company Inc was named after founder Jonathan Dixon Maxwell, who had previously worked for Oldsmobile. Maxwell was one of the first car companies to market specifically to women, and in 1909, it generated a great deal of publicity when it sponsored Alice Huyler Ramsey, an early advocate of women drivers, as the first woman to drive coast-to-coast across the United States. By 1914, the company had strongly aligned itself with the women's rights movement. That year, it announced its plan to hire as many male sales personnel as female. At that time, it offered a promotional reception at its Manhattan dealership which featured several prominent suffragettes such as Crystal Eastman. While in a showroom window a woman assembled and disassembled a Maxwell engine in front of onlookers. In 1961, Ramsey recounted her 1909 adventure in a book, Veil Duster and Tire Iron. She continued to maintain her drivers license until age 95 and passed away in 1983 at the age of 97. In 2000, Alice Ramsey became the first woman to be 2 inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame.

There will be a visit to a hotel for soup and buns during the event. Dinner and prize giving will be held at the end of the run in a licensed venue somewhere in Central Hawke’s Bay. You are advised to fuel up before the start. Please bring a torch. Although the numbers are not limited for the rally, the numbers for the dinner will be. Entrants must be current financial members of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand or guests of a fi nancial member of the VCC. The event is open to all vehicles as recognized by the club, which must be up to the club’s accepted standards regarding cleanliness, general and mechanical condition. The organiser may refuse to start any vehicle, which in his opinion fails to meet that standard. Modern non-competitive vehicles will be accepted as entries. The rally organiser reserves the right to disqualify any entrant whose conduct in his opinion is likely to bring discredit to the event or to the club. The ruling regarding any matters in respect of the running of the event will be final and no correspondence will be entered into. The New Zealand Road Code Rules must be obeyed at all times. The organiser reserves the right to add supplementary regulations or instructions at any time during the running of the event.

May 20th and 21st 2021—Trip to Makoura Lodge—Organised by Keith and Jean Hopping It was great to see a good show of hands of those that are interested in having a couple of days at the Lodge. Just to recap for those that have missed the build up or were not at the meeting. We are putting together a two day event on May 20/21. This will start with a mid morning gathering at a Cafe’ in Woodville on Thursday 20th. After a bit of morning tea we will drive on to Makoura lodge in the Rangitiki (about 3/4hr drive time). The venue consists of motel style accommodation and two very Makoura Lodge well presented cottages that have private bed rooms with shared amenities. All within close proximity to the lodge building that encompasses dining room lounge seating large open fire and bar. A large projected TV is at our disposal for viewing our old home movies or what ever. After checking in and sorting out our rooms a buffet lunch will be served in the dining room. From there on in its just kick back and enjoy what the venue has to offer. Bar, Clay bird shooting, Hole in one golf. Archery. Axe throwing. maybe just kick back and relax on one of the big sofas by the fire, or cheer on those that have opted to do the activities. The evening meal will be served as a buffet after which there will be a prize giving of sorts before getting into a bit of silly fun around the BAR and lounge with member participation activities. (still in the planning stage ). Then after a good nights sleep and freshen up breakfast will be served in the dining room, again this will be buffet. We then pack up and head for home mid morning with options open for cafe’ lunch stops enroute. Cost is $185 per person ($370 per couple) and includes the three meals and your accommodation (Optional $50 per head for the clay bird golf axe archery package) PAYMENT WILL BE YOUR Responsibility at check in. You can also run a bar tab or pay as you go for drinks. You are welcome to bring your own alcohol to your rooms and around the grounds but a corkage fee will apply to meal times in the dining room. However the bar is well stocked for your convenience. Complimentray Instant coffee and tea is available at all times in the dining room on self help basis while the real deal coffee is available during bar hours at a cost. To keep it simple I will pay the 25% booking deposit which Makoura Lodge will refund to me when you have all paid your bill. (or not if you don’t, just saying) With a bit of help from those coming along I’m sure we can make this a great couple of days of fun. The roads enroute are all sealed and quite picturesque. October 13th, 14th, 15th 16th 2021—Extended Mid-Week Run for CHB VCC Organised by Rod and Scarlet McKenzie Rod and Scarlett are putting together another mid-week trip, this time into the bowels of the Central North Island area in mid-October. We will be away for three nights and four days of motoring with a few interesting visits and things to see and do. This run will obviously entail some fairly full days of motoring [possibly around 300km per day!], so it will be more suitable for P45, P60’s and P80’s vehicles, but that is not to say that you shouldn’t drive your Vintage or PV vehicle on the City of Whanganui run. Many of the roads we will travel on have been traversed by us in the past in our Ford Model T, so most entrants could bring any vehicle they like, providing they know it is up to the journey. You will need to have a good road map or electronic GPS at hand when you start the run. And it will be cheaper if you pack a picnic lunch in the car for our first lunch stop before you leave home. The run will be in the form of a “Tour” and will be non-competitive. Visits will include shopping and sight-seeing in Bulls, Marton, Hunterville, Wanganui, Jerusalem, Pipiriki, Raetihi, and Horopito, and a drive up to Turoa ski fields. 1.

You are advised to have your bookings done well in advance, but you are free to stay at any other motel or camping ground as you see fit. It is imperative that you phone your booking in to each motel so you can tell them you are on this trip as we have spoken with each of them and secured our group a favorable rate. You will, of course, need to budget for all of your smokos, tea/coffee stops, lunches, your evening meals, and other motoring costs, etc. It would be helpful that you confirm with Rod and Scarlett [ rod.mckenzie.wpk@xtra.co.nz ] that you will be coming on the trip so they then know how many instruction sheets to print out and also to advise people, at any of the stops we intend making, how many of our folk are likely to turn up. VEHICLE IDENTITY CARDS (UPDATE) January 2021 There has been some more minor changes to the Vehicle Identity Card application forms. The forms that you have or are now using could you please make sure that the date in the top right hand corner (below the page number) is as follows: Pages 1-2-3 are dated 09/2019, page 4 dated 01/2021, Page 5 dated 09/2019 and pages 6 and 7 are dated 10/2020. The main change is that now we require photographs of all available identifying serial numbers i.e. Chassis/frame, engine, body, Vin and any o other identifying features and copies of any paper work that is relevant to your vehicle. There is only one photograph/copy of the above required but we still require 3 photographs of the finished vehicle. If a car or commercial Vehicle please take the photograph on ¾ view and a motorcycle taken side on. Targa Rally cars in Havelock North

Chairman's Report—April 2021 We are now quarter way through the year and there has been plenty of variety and runs to go on. On March 6th John and Shirley Foot, Ken Lyons and myself travelled to Palmerston North for the Annual Ruahine Ramble Rally. It was good to see a good number of Vintage Cars among the 29 entries. After a cuppa and a rally briefing by Esther Williams (Club Captain) we were told there would be some questions to answer at the start and some at the lunch break to find a winner as the rally was not competitive. It was a good day to have the hood down but after a very chilly start it was a very pleasant drive through Colyton on the outskirts of Fielding and then through the back roads around Kimbolton and finally to lunch at the Apiti Hotel. The hotel has had its ups and downs and is now run by a family who has spruced the place up with excellent meals at a good price. After lunch it was a short drive North and a right turn to follow the Pohangina Valley road back to almost Ashurst, then more back roads to end back up at the Club rooms. At that stage of the run the black clouds looked real bad, so the cover was put on the car and the rain really came down. The club rooms have a rather large covered porch and the car was parked under and the top came up. It rained almost all the way back to Waipukurau and after a 12 hour drive there and back including the 180km rally it was back home at 7.15pm. A great day, Thank you Manawatu Branch. The next weekend March 14th was the run to Pongaroa for a supposedly morning tea at the Merrylees Hotel with a cut off date of March 6th as only 20 people indicated by due date that they would be there, there were not enough people there to make it worthwhile. Gloria and Laurie Malcolmson organised morning tea at their place for $2 per head. By the 14th of March 45 people had indicated that they would be at the lunch and morning tea stop, but too late. A cut off date is a cut off date, no exceptions. The same rule will apply to the Night Rally. The dinner venue can only cater for 45-50 people and at the time of writing we have 36 people attending. You have been warned to get your entries in early or you may be sitting on the front doorstep of the hotel with your dinner in a paper bag! Prior to the Pongaroa run John foot ended up in the Hospital, Rally instructions in his computer, Shirley out in the country so with a bit of Detective work. Ken and I got into Johns house, was talked through over the phone how to find the info in the computer and were able to print the instructions. John spent 8 days in hospital to be told on the 8th day to go home and we will see you in a couple of weeks time. John had organised 2 runs, one tar-sealed and one on his infamous gravel road. About 1/3 took the tar seal and the others came out near the Waihi Falls. It was on this last stretch of road that I came around the corner and the car went sideways, most unusual and Mya said "Koro you handled that well" to get out of the slide on the next corner was almost the same. A lay-by was close by where we stopped and 5 other cars stopped too. A flat tyre!! jack out, wheel off, spare on and back on the road again. Thanks guys and gals for all your help. We were not far at this stage from the Hotel where we met up with some of the locals. I had some photos showing the car being retrieved from Pongaroa in 1964 and as it is now, fully restored. I got the frame out of the bag and the glass was broken!!. Another trip to Pongaroa to present the frame and photos to the hotel. I gave a history of the car back to 1940 when it arrived in Pongaroa, a bit more history from the locals. An excellent day, great run and the trip back home via Makuri, Mangatainoka Brewery and then home. No doubt a few photos will be in the next "BLEAT". A big thank you to Joyce and Gary for the photos in the magazine on their trip down south. Lots happening in the next couple of months, so safe travel out there, look after yourselves and see you soon!

Rod’s Rattling's—April 2021 Several of our members went along to the Art Deco event as the HB VCC still went ahead with their plans when the rest of the show was cancelled due to the Covid-19 threat. A correct decision as it turned out. The Veteran car, per se, was being celebrated and about fifty 100 plus year old cars went along for the event. We had planned to be in Waipukurau and meet the folk on the Vintage railcar when it visited, along with the DC3, but all that got canned too. So, we packed up the caravan and headed for New Plymouth to check out the ground there for when we attend the big rally next January. The mid-week run that Scarlett and I are planning for mid-October, is heading toward Whanganui and Ohakune with three nights away from home. Whilst we were away we checked out and pencilled in rooms for the branch in Whanganui and Ohakune where we intend taking our “mid-week run” participants in October. It will be along the lines of the runs we have planned the last couple of years. There will be some spare time and some interesting visits. Some details about this are printed elsewhere in the “Bleat”. You would be wise to book your motel unit as soon as you can if you are coming along. On Sunday 14th, about 40 folk in 20 cars headed off to Pongaroa to visit the area in a run planned by John and Shirley Foot. No one would have more disappointed than them in not being able to attend the event due to John being hospitalised. This was something of a home-coming for Bruce Poole’s 1930 Chrysler 77 which came into Bruce’s hands from Pongaroa in the mid-1960’s. Two couples came along for the first time as prospective members, being Bruce and Chris Turner in their Porsche, and Peter and Lesley Johnston in the x Brian Malcolm Mercedes they purchased from him a few weeks ago. Thank you to Gloria and Laurie for having us to their home for morning tea prior to leaving Dannevirke for the journey. St Patrick’s Day was the same night as our last meeting [17 th March] which was held at the Waipukurau Hotel in very pleasant surroundings, with many of our members coming along in the “green theme” for the evening. It turned out to be quite a lot of fun with many joining in the singing of some well-known Irish ditties at the end of the meeting. Keith Hopping was planning on taking the branch to Makoura Lodge near Apiti in April, but was gazumped by a wedding party for the proposed date. He has revised the date to later in May. Details will be in the “Bleat”. Ken and Bruce have the “Twilight Rally” in hand and entry forms came out in the last publication of the “Bleat”. I imagine the entry form will be printed again herein. Lynn and Sandra Cross are contemplating a run up towards Haumoana in June with a most interesting visit to a collection of mouth-watering vehicles. More information will come to hand in due course. The National VCC Cancer Run will be happening on 22nd August and was discussed at our recent committee meeting. Kaye Carswell and Janet Weaver have discussed what we could do and are formulating some plans to take us out to a place of interest after a car show on James St similar to what the branch did two years ago. It would be great to have a good turn-out of our members for this run which can also involve nonmembers as anybody is welcome to join with us for the day. Several of our Branch members are heading to Gisborne for the bi-annual Model A Ford Convention over Easter which I am sure will be fun for them. Last weekend, fifteen Model T owners got together for a run around CHB arranged by John and Margaret Cleland with a visit to the Poranghau Country Club for lunch, a meal together at the Waipukurau Club in the evening followed by “Brunch” the next morning at the home of Iain and Eva Gollan, who had arranged the local Red Cross folk to assist to raise some funds for their cause.

There was a definite feeling of Autumn in the air that morning as we left Hasting to be in Dannevirke by 9.15am at Laurie and Gloria Malcolmson home for morning tea. A very nice morning tea spread, thank you Laurie and Gloria From there John had organised a choice of two different routes, one which covered a metal section of road and the other sealed all the way to Pongaroa. The run took us South East of Dannevirke, a very different part of Hawkes Bay not many of our members had been there VCC Members and Locals enjoying the Lunch break. before and we were surprised to find a well supported settlement. The Pongaroa Hotel was very nicely presented and so was the food. Before the food arrived Bruce took the opportunity to gather us all around, with some old community identities to give us a run down on the history of his Chrysler. The Chrysler was retrieved from a paddock and under a hedge in Pongaroa in 1964. Since then there has been many hours of very hard work, and many dollars. The Chrysler is now fully restored and looks amazing. A huge credit to you Bruce. Bruce also presented a before and after framed photo and history of the Chrysler to the manager of the Pongaroa Hotel to hang on the wall as another part of the local history. The run home was back through Makuri, Mangatainoka Brewery and then home. Thank you John and Shirley. We all hope you are doing Ok after your hospital visit. 12

New Plymouth Feb 2021-Americana-NZ Celebrating American Culture-by Michael and Vicky Harding Vicky and I drove our 1962 GT Hawk to New Plymouth on Tuesday the 23 rd February to participate in the Americana Festival with 750 other American Classic and muscle cars. We had the only Studebaker there which surprised me. Day 1. Wednesday 24th. At 10.30am we departed TSB Stadium New Plymouth in convoy to Opunake Beach, the weather was excellent, and all the cars managed to park, or crammed into any available space. Food and refreshments were provided by portable food trailers, catered by the local surf club and other clubs, plus other facilities at the surf club and camp grounds. Departed Opunake from 2.30pm and followed the coast Road back to the STB stadium for the meet and greet function with music and refreshments. Day 2. Thursday.25th. About 170 cars did the Rest Home Run, the cars were sent to most of the rest homes in the New Plymouth area. The convoy then left for Waitara at 12 00pm. As the general public had easy access to the routes and times cars travelled, we uncounted groups of people and school children cheering and waving American flags. There were also American flags flying from street lights, and most participant’s cars were flying the flags. Cars were parked in the main street, the balance in the school grounds. At 3.00pm started leaving for Inglewood, arrived at 4.00pm and all entrants parked in the CBD on display. Both towns had a festive atmosphere with live music, and the public enjoyed the visit. At 8.00pm headed back to New Plymouth. Day 3. Friday 27th. We departed TSB stadium from 10.15am to head for Stratford and cars parked on display in CBD and departed from 1.15pm to Hawera, via Kaponga and Manaia. In both locations, weather was warm and partly cloudy and festive atmosphere again prevailed with live music, food stalls and family entertainment. Locals also joined the event by dressing up in 60’s USA clothes or character costumes. An “acceleration display” was held in Albion St, a side street off the main street. Cars who entered travelled about 50metres, with plenty of noise and burning rubber. One supercharged Mustang smoked the tyres the whole distance to record the slowest run. You could hardly see the car for the smoke from burning rubber (just showing off) he came back for the second run with more attention to getting good traction and recorded a much faster time. Other attractions on Albion St were stunt bikes, one rider was 13 taken to hospital with minor injuries. The street had barricades down both sides to protect the public.

New Plymouth Feb 2021-Americana-NZ Celebrating American Culture-by Michael and Vicky Harding At 5.15pm we departed Hawera for New Plymouth to cruise the CBD up until 9.30pm on the designated roads. We were asked to cruise in two lanes, in order to get 600 cars through in reasonable time. Most cars did the circuit more than once. Day 4 Saturday 28th. From 8.00am to 9.45am all cars were to park on Devon Street, the main shopping street of New Plymouth for a public display and to be removed at 3.00pm. The cars were parked in 3 rows, and the public turned out in large numbers, with cafes and restaurants being very busy. Once again there were trader’s stalls and live music, plus stunt motor bikes entertaining the crowds. The farewell dinner and awards started at 6.00pm at the TSB stadium, it was noted that Americana got the level 1 status just in time to avoid cancellation, and Level 3 for Auckland and 2 for the rest of the country were announced at the end of the farewell dinner. This was also considered that this was the best Americana to date. The first event was in 2007. The event is a celebration of American vehicles and culture of the 50’s and 60’s. Vicky and I really enjoyed the Americana experience, and will be keen to go again. You can see more information and photos on the Americana Facebook pages. I was told by the man in charge (JR) that they would also welcome more vintage and classic cars (including Studebakers) to Americana. Plans are already underway for Americana 2022. CHB Man—Daryl Eason—son of CHBVCC member—Ken Eason is inducted into the Central Hawkes Bay College Hall of Honour A life time of recovery and conservation work and internationally recognised champion of the endangered Kakapo is to be inducted into the Central Hawkes Bay College Hall of Honour. Daryl Eason attended Central Hawkes Bay College from 1960 to 1984. For more than 25 years he has played a major role in saving from extinction the endemic flightless Kakapo which is ranked Nationally as critically endangered. The Kakapo is the largest of all the parrots and used to found all over New Zealand. Due to ecological changes the loss of habitat and the introduced predators the number of Kakapo was only 51 in 1995. Today the population of adult Kakapo is 206 who are all tagged and live on predator free island. Daryl has had a large part to play in this recovery. At the age of twenty Daryl took up the position of manager at the Burwood Takahe Centre near Te Anau. This involved captive rearing of another critically endangered flightless bird the Takahe. This was followed by his appointment in 1996 as the technical advisor to the National Kakapo recovery team initially based in Wellington until moving to Invercargill in 2014, close to where most of the wild Kakapo now live. Daryl is responsible for the breeding management programme including the artificial incubation and hand rearing of any chicks or eggs that might not survive in the wild. His contribution to the recovery of the Kakapo has been significant and he has been recognised Nationally for his work most notably in the book (Kakapo Rescued from the Brink of Extinction). His outstanding work has also been recognised by his peers worldwide who work in the threatened species recovery field where he is considered a conservation champion. Lance Christiansen CHB College Principal gave recognition to Daryl Eason for his very notable work.

Food for thought On February 10, 1966, Ralph Nader, a young lawyer and the author of the book “Unsafe at Any Speed. The Designed-In Dangers of the American Automobile,” presented testimony to Congress for the first time about dangerous practices in the auto industry. In the 1960s, domestic automakers were not largely regulated. Nader’s book, published in November 1965, accused car companies of designing vehicles emphasizing style and power over safety. One chapter addressed handling problems with the Chevrolet Corvair, produced by General Motors. Following Nader’s appearance before Congress, the media reported that Nader had been under surveillance. It was later determined that GM hired investigators to spy on Nader and examine his personal life in an effort to discredit him. Nader sued GM for harassment and invasion of privacy and won a settlement. Public sympathy over GM’s actions made “Unsafe at Any Speed” a best-seller and Ralph Nader a household name. Nader’s book and public advocacy of auto-safety issues led to the passage of the 1966 National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. This legislation sought to reduce the rising number of injuries and deaths from road accidents by establishing federal safety standards for every American-made vehicle, including safety belts for all passengers. 15
