Club meetings on the second Tuesday of the month at the Aurere Clubrooms at 7.30pm.
CLUB CLEANING ROSTER 2019-2020 During the month, and preferably before the main calendar event, please give the clubrooms a thorough check over, as in: Clean the toilets and hand basins, check kitchen, window ledges etc, and sweep the floors. Window cleaning, washing walls etc will be done at working bees.
Note any required maintenance and pass on to the Building Officer– Warren Mackay, ph 09 4061955 If your date doesn’t suit you, please swap with someone else. For any other enquiries please contact the Club Captain.

MOTHERS DAY RUN SUNDAY 9TH MAY Meet at Cobham Rd, Kerikeri, near ‘The Merchants’, 200m south of the Turner Centre 10 - 10.15am Before going to Waitangi for lunch a ‘Pride of Ownership’ competition will be held, peer judged. About 10.50 the first car is to head off, a short drive and sight seeing stop will take us to Waitangi Golf Club. Lunch is at 12 o’clock and we need to be there on time. From the Chair…….
Well another month rolls on and I don’t know where it went. What a great turn out for the Brian Parker Rally, good to see old friends from Dargaville and Whangarei join us as well as our local members .We also had a surprise note from the North Island club captain Kaaren Smylie wishing us all the best for the day. Many thanks to Murray and Gloria for setting us an interesting and relaxing day . Good to see a bit more seal on our back country roads, also a bonus to have the catering done by Shannie, at the clubrooms so even the ladies could relax.

Northern Club Captain’s Report…..
Warren’s report isn’t available at this time, but here’s a recent photo. He and Robyn won third place at the Brian Parker Rally.
Southern Club Captain’s Report….. A big thanks to all participants in the Brian Parker the 11th May. We as a club rely on Memorial Rally, with special thanks on the day to members’ contributions for our activWinston, Graeme, Colleen and Robyn. ities. We are looking forward to the lunch at the home of George and Janet on Friday 30th April.
Hopefully later in the month we can squeeze in a midweek trip to the Ruapekapeka Pa site. Look for an email on this visit after the AGM.
The Mother’s Day Run on 9th May, organised by Terry and Sue, should have wide appeal with lunch at the Waitangi Golf Club. We always have good support for this event and I am sure it will be memorable.
Hope you are all enjoying this great autumn weather, and appreciate many of you have other commitments at this time.

Here’s another account of part of the legendary Parliamentary Tour of 1917, taken from Readers’ Digest’s “New Zealand Yesterdays”:
“But after this respite (that was the drive along Ninety Mile Beach) the motoring nightmare resumed. The cars left Kaitaia again in threatening weather and with disturbing reports of road conditions ahead. In anticipation the party bought up a store’s entire supply of clotheslines and chains to supplement their already impressive array of emergency gear. Their destination was Herekino, only 26km to the south, although the journey was expected to take two hours. ‘Chunking and slithering through mud and slush’, as one report put it, the cars finally made it– in six hours or more. The politicians, in bare legs and mud up to the knees, pulled on ropes and chopped down bush to make corduroy paving. Capsizes and burst tyres added to the horror. When eventually the 100
muddy politicians and their party descended on the tiny township of Herekino it was decided to call it a day. Undeterred by the invasion and no doubt seeing an opportunity to lobby on their own account, the townsfolk turned on a dance. Early in the evening, says the AA’s official report, ‘a number of Maoris and gumdiggers arrived….. So the recumbent figures rose up and joined in the revelry until an argument ended in a stand-up fight and put a stop to the merrymaking.’ Next morning, according to another account, a prominent MP was seen holding a Jersey cow while his chauffeur milked it into a pint mug. The next stage took four more grim hours to Broadwood. The report goes on to say that ‘despite the graphic lessons of the tour, the north remained largely roadless for many more years.
