Mother’s Day Rally 9th May
This year’s Mother’s Day event was organised by Terry and Sue, who produced a great event for a good number of members and guests despite uncertain weather. We all gathered at Cobham Road Kerikeri in a wide variety of vehicles. Just as Terry was to start the ‘Pride of Ownership’ competition we experienced a heavy shower of rain. We were undeterred, and we inspected under the bonnet, in the boot, and inside and outside of our fellow members’ cars. With this completed, we all headed off to Haruru Falls with a diversion to the Mt Bledisloe lookout over the Bay of Islands. This seemed to herald clearing weather as we then continued to the Waitangi Golf Club for 1
a great lunch and social catch-up. Winners of the ‘Pride of Ownership’ were Gloria and Murray, closely followed by Kae and Paul. On presenting the trophy, Winston suggested that there was an irregularity in the judging, as the winning vehicle had two boots, perhaps receiving extra points on this basis! Our small Fiat remains unrepentant, believing all cars could perhaps have two boots if they put the motor in the right place! Always a well-supported event, this was well thought out and very successful. A big thanks to Terry and Sue for your Mother’s Day rally. Murray

From the Chair… Hi Everyone, Many thanks to all members for continuing with their positions at the AGM. A special thanks to Margaret Ilton for taking on the position of Editor and Tom Deverall for accepting the Northern Club Captains position. Please give them your support.
We have had a meeting to put together our next year’s programme and some criteria changes which we will discuss at the next meeting. We had a good turn out and meal to celebrate Mother’s Day which was well organized by Terry and Sue Rogers. We are heading for the shortest day, turn on your heaters, and happy motoring. We hope to see you at coming events. Keep Warm. Win
Thanks to Warren and Graeme for handling motor events in the past. We are sorry to be losing Dave and Peg Hills who have put so much into the Club over the past 16 years. Please come and reminisce at their farewell on the 5th June.
Northern Club Captain’s Report As a relative newbie to the Far North Vintage Car Club, I have still to learn a lot of member’s names. My brain doesn’t work as well as it used to! However, I shall do my best to fill Warren’s shoes. At our first committee meeting we planned our events calendar for the next 12 months with new ideas of trips to be organised. We can all look forward to another busy year. Tom Deverall

Covid has changed all our lives in many ways but has not reduced our enthusiasm for vintage vehicles. I am staggered at the number of vintageeligible vehicles in our area. Many of these are The not Vintage represented inofthe Car Club NewVCC Zealand but hopefully some of their owners can be enticed to join our branch. Car shows, both formal and informal are very popular with many vehicle owners. There are numerous such events, particularly over the summer for members. Our monthly event at Taipa plus the regular Paihia breakfast event provide a great mix of cars, people and food. The pot-luck lunches started by Warwick and Penny have continued and are enjoyed by all and the bringing of vintage cars to these events is a real bonus. I am humbled by the generosity of our host members who provide their private homes for these and we are always looking for more homes in our area to host these events. I can supplement tables/crockery etc if required. This year many of our club’s trophy rallies have either been prepared by southern members or have been in the southern region, showcasing our region and hospitality. Members seem happy with an uninterrupted drive with any 3
It is hoped we can continue with some kind of informal tour in our southern area. We have enjoyed three years of Kaipara cruise or tour events which have been appreciated. There is still plenty of country in the Kaipara we have not been to. We have started again the mid-week informal get-togethers. These are arranged at short notice and visit a place of interest in our area. I am hoping for some ideas and inspiration from our local members. At present Ruapekapeka Pa and Kawakawa are lined up in the short term. Interest in the club, appears to be growing with good numbers at our most recent events. Let’s hope we can build on this positive response with some great events in the next year. If elected, I would be happy to continue as Southern Area Club Captain for the next year. Murray

Molloy Trophy Rally 26th June 2021 Meet at Kaeo Museum area – midtown- at 10.00am for a start time of 10.45am. Bring morning tea if you wish. The finish and presentation venue is at The Pioneer Tavern, Waipapa, with lunch by the fire. You can purchase food from the lunch menu (snacks to main meal options). Lunch prices range from $5.00 to

perfectly presented! Just send them in and any editing will happen for you. A big thank you to our kind members who do send things of interest in. It makes a huge difference to the compiling of the newsletter and it gives the Focus a diversity of material which creates interesting reading for you. Many of you will also have material you have viewed online, books, magazines etc which may well be of interest for others. Please don’t hesitate to share these things with us.
GREEN ELECTRIC CARS AT END OF LIFE.
This is a boneyard near Paris, France with hundreds of electric powered cars. Mind you these are only cars used by the City of Paris and not personal vehicles. All of these have the same issue.... the battery storage cells have given out and need replacement. Why not just replace them you ask? Well two reasons. First the battery storage cells cost almost double what the vehicle cost new and second no landfill or disposals will allow the batteries to be disposed of there. So these green fairy tale electric cars are all sitting in vacant lots while their batteries drain toxins into the ground. Still think we need to go green???

Te Ruapekapeka Visit A group of members recently enjoyed a drive to the upgraded site of the Te Ruapekapeka Pa.
The weather was kind to us apart from a misty shower while we soaked up the knowledge presented at the memorial for the soldiers who fell at the battle of Te Ruapekapeka.
The Pa site was fascinating to walk through and it was certainly an amazingly creative site in its day. While there we made ‘considered guesses’ about which area of farm land across the valley had previously been owned by Peg and Dave Hills. The day concluded with delicious meals of very generous portions, served at the Towai Tavern. From this site the walk took us through patches of bush to 2 sites of interest. 8
