CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

sometimes wonder what to say in this piece. We make sure that the activities are included in the Club Captain’s report which I assume is the main read for most of you alongside the events calendar.

I try to pick out wider things that may be of interest to members of the Club/Branch and the activities of your committee. As this is my last newsletter report before the AGM, I would like to acknowledge your committee and its officers. They have put in the time and effort to sustain the branch which would not continue without them. I thank them for their support and help during the year. They have given me and you, thought and effort during a difficult year. At our AGM in May we will need to vote for a new Secretary and Chairman. But perhaps, as important, new committee members who can help keep the branch vibrant and active. Please consider putting your name forward: new ideas and enthusiasm are essential. I suppose it is at this point that I must thank the Heaven family for running and setting the Are We There Yet? Rally. It was a great day for the sun, if a little windy. The route was excellent, easy to follow, with diverse scenery and good clues to find. However, the number of participants was disappointing. When members go to the trouble to set up events for us, it is a shame that they are given so little support. The Swap Meet is one event where most members participate, and we do well to keep the coffers full and enjoy the day chatting and catching up.

Please look at your calendar and put our Runs in well ahead so you don’t miss them. Give your Club Captain and members who step forward your support and enjoy happy motoring and friendship. I understand that one-make club activities do sometimes clash but not all the time! If you want us to do other activities then let me or Leon know. What are your favourite activities? CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT

ur members supported the Warkworth A&P Show with eleven club-eligible vehicles. Although the number of exhibitors and visitors seemed to be down on previous years, many folk looked over our vehicles and several showed interest in the club and its activities. Being a little overcast, the weather made the day quite pleasant. The turnout for the “Are We There Yet?” Rally, competing for the Mike Brown Memorial Trophy was extremely disappointing. Three vehicles, of which two were club-eligible, started but sadly, no one eligible finished. Robert Page reported that his Chev broke down returning on the Tapora Peninsula and he ended up on a tow truck. Rob was most grateful to Felicity Heaven who as Tail-end Charlie, remained with him until the tow truck arrived. The run was enjoyable and well planned by Harry and Margaret Heaven and Linda Matheson. It is very disappointing when organisers put so much effort into setting a run and the event is not supported. Although several of our regulars were away that weekend, we have a membership of more than 120 so there is a reasonable expectation that club events would be supported to a greater degree. The mid-week picnic at Martins Bay on 7 April was well supported with 16 folk in attendance. The weather was good despite a cool breeze. We had a guest speaker at our first pot-luck club dinner of the year. David Stott spoke to us of his experiences around the world as a civil engineer. Discussion towards the end of the evening centred on local roading issues and traffic problems that can be seen arising in the future. The dinner was well attended by 23 of our members. Our Sunday run to the Gannet Colony at Muriwai saw a mix of eleven club-eligible and modern vehicles take part. Although the weather was not great, we managed to avoid the rain. Most of the young birds had departed for Australia but there were still a few stretching their wings and building up courage to take-off. May’s mid-week lunch will be at the Bayside Café in Snells Beach on Wednesday 5 May. Waitemata Branch have invited us to join them at a Wings and Wheels event at Kaipara Flats airfield on Sunday 15 May from 10.30 a.m. Our vehicles can join the display of cars from Waitemata. There will be vintage aircraft attending and the Aero Club will put on a BBQ lunch. The Albertland Heritage Centre is opening an exhibition of “Fashion Through the Ages” on Saturday 29 May. We have been asked if we could provide vehicles to transport members of the public from the Heritage Centre in Wellsford to the Port Albert Hall for a late luncheon and to display our vehicles. We need to be at the Heritage centre by 10:30 a.m. to get our cars in position for 11:00 a.m. opening of the Exhibition. Happy motoring,

NATIONAL MODEL A FORD RALLY: GISBORNE

our Model A Fords from our branch attended the National Model A Ford Rally in Gisborne, together with around 115 others. Ross Bolton in his Coupe, motored down via Waikaremoana, Nigel Hawkes with Jacob aboard his Phaeton motored together with Roy and Gay London in their Mitsi around the East Cape with Darcy and Trish Stirling from Matakohe. Brendda and I took a more direct route via the Waioeka Gorge but drove home around East Cape. Generally, the week-long event was blessed with very good weather with cool persistent showers on just one day.

ur first run was down to Mahia via Tuanui Rd, a winding, gravel road with great views. Following lunch at Mahia, we made a visit to a local collection which included stationery engines and a 1926 Thornycroft truck. During the afternoon we made the 21 mile trip to the end of the peninsula, from where we looked over to Portland Island and had a distant glimpse of the Rocket Lab launch site.

he next run took us up to Motu, via Te Karaka and along Whakarau Rd. At Te Karaka the school children were out to look at the cars and many enjoyed a ride with Bruce Miles in his ’28 tourer which appeared to be fresh from the barn. Later at Motu School, he proudly took all ten of the children for a ride in one load. Whakarau road was another winding, hilly, gravel road with many amusing signs along the way. The road followed the old railway which opened in 1917 but closed in 1959 having almost made it to Motu. An old rail bridge in the middle of a paddock is the most obvious remnant of the line. 6

he third run was to Kaikino Station, Tiniroto, high in the hills between Gisborne and Waikaremoana. Unfortunately, persistent rain obscured the spectacular views we should have had on Parikanapa Rd, another twisting, narrow, gravel road. After passing through Donneraille Park we reached Kaikino Station where we were served a lunch including venison burgers and were entertained by Terrier racing. This is a regular event in the district, organised by a group of women to raise funds to support local breast cancer sufferers. It was was most entertaining, helped in no small way by the hilarious commentary of the rally’s MC Graham Williams. Bruce Miles about to fill his car with Te Karaka school children

igel joined the Auckland group, winners of the assembly challenge which required teams to assemble axles, wheels, brake rods, engine, gearbox, steering and exhaust to a Model A chassis, then start and drive the machine several metres back and forward. Easter Saturday was a quiet one. A planned harbour cruise was cancelled due to the wind but many of us enjoyed a steam train ride from Gisborne to Muriwai. On our return, the train stopped for an aircraft to land before we crossed the runway. The rally culminated in the awards dinner, where we were again entertained by Graham Williams. The organising committee, led by David Mossman, put on a tremendous, enjoyable and entertaining week of activities for the participants who travelled to the event from as far away as Invercargill and Kerikeri. INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF MOTORING 16-21 JAN 2022

There are four days of runs including one competitive day. On the Thursday there is also a Street Party at Inglewood in the evening for the public to see the cars. This replaces the display usually open to all cars. If you have not already registered interest, you can do so on their website. This is also where they want you to Register for the event. We have been talking in the branch and wondered whether some would like to join a group heading off to the festival. If you are interested, please contact me and I will connect us all together. CLUB CAR OF THE MONTH BRIAN PAYNE’S 1970 HOLDEN VT KINGSWOOD ___________________________________________________

hen Henry Ford introduced his Model T Ford in 1908 as a cheap car for the masses, who would have thought that some of those 15 million cars which were built over 19 years would still be running over a century later and would become highly collectible vehicles. Brian’s Holden is a mere 51 years old now but will it have the same cachet as the Model T Ford in 50 years’ time? Will we even have cars as we know them today or will we move around by maglev or teleporting? Whatever the outcome, there is bound to be a cohort of diehard Holden fans who would love to get their hands on this car which has travelled only 32,726 miles since new and is in superb original condition.

rian has been a VCC member for 30 years, first with the Auckland Branch and latterly with our Branch. His first Club Car was a 1928 Austin 12-4 which he sold in 2016. By that time he had already taken over the Holden in 2001 from his father who could no longer drive after suffering a stroke. This completed the circle of ownership because Brian had managed to get the car for his father in the days when cars were unobtainable without having overseas funds. Brian’s father did not qualify, but after eleven years working for Paine Bros Motors (no relation) in Otahuhu Brian had become Service Manager and was able to pull some rank and secure the only new Holden which was available, in the colour yellow.

he car is not used daily and has always been shed-stored and is in mint condition. Brian has covered only 2,435 miles on Club Runs since 2001 and has always serviced the car as required. The 186 c.i. (3.0 litre) straight six is the highly regarded Red Motor which features a seven-bearing crankshaft, full flow oil filter and hydraulic valve lifters. It drives through a manual transmission with the ‘three on the tree’ column change. Last year Brian put on a new set of radial tires which have improved the steering and roadholding enormously, but otherwise the car is completely original. Brian says it drives like a new car and has no trouble keeping up with the traffic of today. Brian’s son wants to take over the car in due course so perhaps it will celebrate its 100-year birthday after all. How much is that doggy in the window?

hat car is this?

Last month’s car was a Chevrolet El Morocco which was a customized full-size car produced by Canadian businessman Reuben Allender, based on the 1956 and 1957 Chevrolets. Allender, was a wealthy businessman who had a dream of building his own car. He was a long-time buyer of Cadillacs and his ambition was to build a smaller, lighter and cheaper car that would bring the style of a Cadillac within range of the less well-healed. The first-year El Morocco was based on the 1956 Bel Air Sport Coupe and Convertible, and the 1957 models sported more Cadillac-style bling. Looking for a name that sounded like Eldorado, but not wanting to antagonize Cadillac, he chose El Morocco. The price was set at about $1,000 more than a Bel Air but that still moved the car beyond the reach of most customers. The cost of conversion was too high for the venture to succeed and only ten hardtop sedans, two hardtop coupes and two convertibles are known to have been built.

Traffic regulations must be observed, drivers licenses and current membership cards will be carried on the Rally.

The starters may refuse to start any vehicle that fails to meet the stated requirements.

Any complaints or disputes must be placed before the Committee on the day of the Wander.

A minimum of three entrants are needed to make a class.

The club reserves the right to refuse any entrant whose conduct, in their opinion, is likely to bring discredit to the event or on the Branch and their ruling regarding any matters in respect of the running of the event will be final.
