The Super Snipe on Civvy Street. In 1964 the super Snipe returned to Humber Showrooms unchanged from 1939, and found a steady market with its powerful 100bhp straight –six it was tough,rapid and dependable,but thirsty. In 1948 a modernised model arrived,its headlights now intergrated into wings in the comtemporary style, and an imposing two –door convertible was also offered.A slightly improved Mklll appeared in 1950 and continued until the old warhorse was pensioned-off in 1952. Nonetheless the Super Snipe name survived in the Humber range until 1967.

The Humber Super Snipe. From a Super Snipe’s capacious back seat General (later Field Marshal) Sir Bernard Montgomerysimply.) ‘Monty’ to the admiring public-co-ordinated the battle campaigns that helped edge the Second World War towards its conclusion. Amazing, his Humber staff car had already serviced his relentlessly gruelling transport needs since October 1942 throughout North Africa, and would continue to serve his successor in Italy. Sir Oliver Leese,during the rest of the war.It truly deserved its “Old Faithful” nickname. Meanwhile as Monty shifted his focus and tactics in August 1044,a second Super Snipe joined him on the Western Front.’I have travelled many hundreds of miles in my Humber car” he wrote about it in August1943 in a letter to Rootes Group staff in London,and will no doubt travel many more” An understatement Monty would eventually cover an incredible 60,000 miles in what became known as the ‘Victory Car’ over the 12 months to the cessation of hostilities in 1945. The bravery and determination of the land –based fighting forces is almost unimaginable today. But it was the sheer mechanical tenacity of the Humber that enable it to play its part. The Super Snipe
had barely been in production for a year with1,500 or so sold, when war was declared. It mixed the chasis and the bodywork of the 3 litre Snipe with the 4-litre engine from the stately Humber Pullman. This cocktail produced a fast car, capable of 79mph,tilted at the professional classes and government ministries. However,unlike other executive models,this one continued to be produced throughout the was as a staff car for Army,RAF and Royal Navy commanders. Surprisingly little was needed to beef Super Snipe up to military life.The bodywork was shorten at the back so they could better tackle ramps, stronger springs were used and chunky low- pressure tyres were fitted that gave that high-pitched moaning sound later synonymous with Land Rovers. Army bigwigs were won over by the Super Snipe. One officer serving in East Africa covered 48,000 miles on terrible roads in his: Both my African driver and I became devoted to it. He wrote. Both the two famous Humber Super Snipe staff cars have survived. ‘Old Faithful‘ was presented back to Rootes in 1945 as a ‘token of the good service rendered by the Humber vehicles to the war effort’ Its guardian today is the National Army Museum. ‘Victory’ meanwhile found a permanent peace–time home in the Coventry Transport Museum, where it remains a star exhibit.
