Our most famous lawnmower had its orgins in 1910 when two young New Zealander engineers,Reuben Porter and Harold Mason, went into business together in Auckland to manufacture pumps and engines. But it was to be the manufacture of lawnmowers( push ones at first, and later two- stroke) that ‘Masport’ became a household name. tHe face of Antipodean lawnmowing was radically and rotarily altered one afternoon in 1952 in Concord , New South Wales when Mervyn Victor Richardson decided to connect a small petrol motor to a rotary blade.Convential Cylindrical mostly defeated by the kind of coarse lawn grass that dominates Australia and New Zealand and the greater cutting power of the rotary blade proved an immediate hit. Richardson opened a factory in the following year to manufacture his “Victa” mower. New Zealand made versions soon followed.
