Jim talked about his involvement with racing cars, of the many trials and tribulations, where they clearly had more fun than we do today. A very informative amusing and interesting talk. CHAIRMANS REPORT HI Everyone I hope you are all well and keeping clear of “Covid 19” I think I can speak for everyone that was at the last Meeting, thanks to Jim Little it was a great great Evening, I could have sat for hours listening to some of the kiwi magic.some of the antics they got up to makes you wonder how they got away with it (good ole days) so a big thanks goes to Jim Thanks to the members that helped with delivering Daffodils’ all went very well Swap meet is all go with everything pointing to a very Successful day, with site bookings up and a lot of inquiries Regarding the swap meet. We may be short of helpers so If you are free please come along and and offer help Don’t forget if you have any ideas please put them on Paper so we can discuss them A big thanks to Bill Ryan for all the help with the fork lift And clean up for the swap meet

Club Captains Report Earlier this month one of our dogs collided with me and broke my leg.This necessitated a week in hospital, and now many frustrating days in a wheelchair. That’s that bad news. There has not been much interest in the trip to the Ashburton Aviation Museum, so I surmise this is not of interest to many. However if any would like to visit please feel free to take the trip up to Ashburton, I believe the museum is well worth the visit. The swap meet is still a go, and as long as “social distancing” etc is maintained all we will need is fine weather and we will have a great day. The end of year get together will be hosted by Peter and Linda Bland, who have generously offered to open their lovely home on the last Sunday of November, or 1st Sunday in December. Wet or fine, decision of day advised in next report. We will have a B B Que, bring your own choice of meat and liquid refreshment, and enjoy a great afternoon. Drive safely Suzanne.
Saturday 5th August 9.00am . Saw a number of members arrive at Blueys shed. We were here to fulfill a promise and commitment to the late Bluey Melton. It was 1deg and frosty in the shade , cold to say the least . Were a few of us tools in hand as we set about cleaning off the old bricks. Working bee’s always happen to have an element of entertainment. Some reminisce, some tell stories . But Bob our retired Bricky , ran a quiz show for us. Needless to say we didn’t fare too well. Have to admit that not only was the quiz enjoyable , we all came away with a lot more knowledge of the brick industry. By lunch time , the sun still hadn’t made it to the front of the shed. We then proceeded too pack Up , all of us by now wearing clothes and hair that were white with dust. Barry Anderson worked out, that all up the Club has cleaned around about a thousand bricks. Pays homage to the old saying: many hands make light work. Many THANKS too : Glenys and Graeme Dennison , Paul Leonard , Bob Gibson , John Dawson , Barry Anderson , Donald Mewburn . In February 2020, the Waimate Vintage Car Club were extremely fortunate to receive a wonderful gift from Mr John Bell of Waimate of an Austin Maxi 1750, this very generous gift is to become the Waimate Vintage Car Club car. John took delivery of the Austin on Friday 13th October 1978. Purchased from GT Gillies of Oamaru. This car was in fact the last Maxi ever sold by them. At the time GT Gillies of Oamaru were Austin agents for North Otago and for Waimate via their local branch operated by the brothers Bill and Colin Veitch.
In 1972 a couple fled East Berlin passing through Checkpoint Charlie in the boot of a Maxi. On 1 July 1969 John Lennon and wife Yoko Ono crashed their white Maxi into a ditch in the Scottish Highlands. Lennon then had the car removed to his Tittenhurst home where it was placed on a plinth as homage to their lucky escape. In 1975 Dunlop set out to prove the quality of their new “World-beater” tyre range by fitting them to two Maxis which were then driven around the world passing through Europe, the Middle East, India, Australia and the USA.
The history of the Austin Maxi is one of it being depicted as a most versatile production car. At the time it a revolutionary design, it was also one of the first Britishmade cars to have a five-speed gearbox.
From 1975 to 1980 British Leyland supplied the Lawn Tennis Association with official “Wimbledon Maxis”.
A Brief History of some other famous Maxis –
The Waimate Vintage Car Club appreciates this kind gesture from Mr Bell in donating this car to the club and feels it is very fitting that this particular Maxi will stay in the Waimate area.
In November 1979 an orange Maxi, identical to this one was involved in a daring escape in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. Owned by the then First Secretary at the British Embassy in Tehran, the Maxi was used to rescue five US diplomats after the Embassy was stormed.
It must be agreed a little car with some remarkably interesting and famous other companions.
