CHAIRMANS REPORT Hi everyone Well winter is on the way colder nights even a few frosts As discussed at the last meeting it’s our turn to have a Garage raid. We have a few suggestions,but if any one has any ideas as in workshops garages or anything of interest please let us know DON’T forget 3 passes run on the 16th may we would love To have a great turnout As you will know a group of us went to Roxbough to visit The saffron Estate plus other places of interest . The saffron estate was amazing,the time and effort That is put into growing and harvesting the saffron is Incredible, their gardens over 200 roses, editable garden With all kinds of berries, plus hundreds of other bee Friendly plants a great place to visit.The other places We visited were equally amazing,from stationery Motors all over one hundred years old to Fergies Converted to track machines,Robbs garage was another Surprise with 2/3 dozen Fords some restored to original Condition and some still to be restored,in all a very worth While weekend A G M this meeting don’t forget if you are nominating Someone for a position the forms need to be in before The meeting Thought for the month WANDER DOWN LANES YOU HAVE NEVER TAKEN BEFORE LIFE ISNT A TRAVEL GUIDE TO FOLLOW ITS AN ADVENTURE TO UNDERTAKE THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR HELP AND SUPPORT YOURS IN MOTORING STEVE
Club Captains Report Hard to believe we are already in May and nearly half way through the year! Remember to put the 16th of this month aside to do the Three Passes, and Three Gorges run. We will meet at the club rooms about 9am for a briefing, then away . Lunch at Cattle Creek hall. After lunch we will continue through the various passes and Gorges, to finally finish up back in Waimate. Vintage or modern vehicle, although good clearance is probably preferable if you wish to keep your exhaust! Barry has put a photo of us outside the Cattle Creek hall, hard to believe it was March 2019. Let’s hope we can have another great day. The scenery is great too. If you wish to have a small reminder of the day look up the April 2019 Rolling Wheels. Note if the weather is unsuitable the run will be cancelled In unsure contact me 027-2275406 Don’t forget the A.G.M. Is on the 20th of this month. Last year we were in the middle of coming to grips with viruses and lockdowns! We have learnt a whole new vocabulary since then. This year we are hopefully back to normal, whatever that is! Roxburgh Just a recap on our recent tour to Central Otago Barbara and I left home on the Tuesday prior , having the first 2 nights in Cromwell. John Lester and Mary ( ex Waimate member) met us on the Wednesday night in Cromwell. The 2 John’s attended the Cromwell Vintage Car Club meeting. Which they both found interesting. On the Thursday we tiki toured onto Alexandra via a look around Clyde. Stayed the Thursday night at Alex , which was great . We were next to there sport area and swimming centre. The pools were fantastic under cover and a variety of temperatures. Friday afternoon we headed down to Miller’s Flat , and met up with our fellow members. A barbecue dinner at the campground was attended by us all and a great night was had. Saturday we all left from the camping ground , our first shed was a workshop to die for... Allan Garden , where he was doing up a 1830 Hart Parr. Allan also had 25 stationary engines in a container along with another 25 down in his shed. The oldest there was a 1921 and a 1926 bean’s , also a 1912 , 3 hp Hornbury . After leaving Allans place , we went to the oldest and largest sheep shearing shed in Teviot . The shed held 8000 sheep and 40 shearer’s . It burnt down in 1924. Still standing is the stone facade with arched windows. An amazing piece of work , majestically set against the back drop of hills with the Clutha river running in its front. This lead to Roxburgh where we had lunch. “ The Store “ was our lunch venue and the people were coming in , in droves. Amazing food and staff . After lunch was David Wright ( Rusty ) in the old shell garage. He had a 1968 Holden Premier , an array of Massey Ferguson tractors. 2 replica Edmund Hillary tractors that were copied from those used in Antartica . An early Hamilton 1960 jet boat and it was in mahogany ply ,powered by a MK11 consul motor. Rusty’s other claim to fame was that he had once had a girlfriend in Waimate. From here we went to the Saffron Farm Wynyard Estate. Here Wendy showed us around the saffron paddock and her garden. Wendy’s knowledge was flowing about her passion of saffron farming. Where one of the highlights was knowing that it’s price per ounce is greater than gold. An intense harvest time as everything is done by hand. Scientific studies have found its benefits for macular degeneration, show significant improvement in the retinal function. Wendy and her partner were very enthusiastic about the saffron and its healing properties. Quite a few of left with bags of either jellies , with raunchy names or the Hawkeye capsules to support healthy eyes. From Wynyard Estate we headed back to camp. Meeting up again for dinner at the Miller’s Flat Hotel .
Well the food here was amazing.... the STEAK’s well they were so big I was looking for the tail and horns. Well done those that feasted on these . Quite a few us had the Oysters good price 8 oysters , salad and chips. This too was an absolute stunner of a meal. Lots of laughter and banter concluded a great day. Sunday morning 9.30 kick off from the Hotel . From here we went to Ettrick and then headed to the South . Owen had arranged for us all to visit his cousin . As we arrived he had cars lining the drive , with there bonnets up. We did offer to lift the bonnet on our Hyundai. Some how it didn’t seem to fit the bill. A retired apple grower Neil obviously had a passion for Jaguars. Here the Jaguar on display had definitely seen better days . A RETIREMENT plan , one that will fill many hours , days and months. There was an E type that he had imported , it was in Gore having its restoration completed. From here we went to Neil’s brother Alastair. This place had a place for everything and everything in its place. Garages galore and Jaguars to match , a very rare E type flat floor model. Alastair restores vehicles professionally. Back into Roxburgh we go ..... lunch again at The Store.
After lunch was Rob’s Garage . Here unfolded cars ranging from Model T’s to Ford V8’s. Quite a collection of English Fords . 30 cars in total . This is where we left everyone and we headed to Southland and the Catlins. Many many Thanks must go to Owen Duthie and Steve Dyson for organising a wonderful weekend.
