Another month has flown by and sadly we are still being affected by the dreaded Covid-19 Virus. Although our government is doing a great job in protecting us, it is still very hard not knowing what are the best steps or decisions to make. As I watch or listen to the news every day waiting for a definite report, when can we hold a club meeting? When can we organise an event? The situation is definitely not giving us the answers that we want to hear. At the time of writing this report, I can't give a definite date to any meetings or outings and will have to rely on passing any news to you all through emails. This year has certainly been a hard one even though we are the fortunate ones. However, our monthly Working Bee went ahead as planned this month and even though it was a wet and cold morning it was attended by 22 members. The usual social morning tea was complimented with Linda Barton’s lovely big homemade cookies. There was more talking than work but this is what we want these mornings, to be social and enjoyable. It was nice to see that George had his Ford Y there and even took Verdon for a ride in it. Unfortunately, I lost the bet and they didn't have to walk back. It was also good to see Bev and Pete back in the library helping Don and Pauline sort out more donated books. Unfortunately, Peter Nightingale has broken an Achilles tendon and until this repairs is wheelchair bound. We certainly wish him all the best and a speedy recovery. Thanks to Jackie Job and John White the club has now installed Covid-19 tracer codes on the entrances to the clubrooms. Please if you haven't already downloaded the app to your cell phone, do so now and it is an easy way of tracing your movements by scanning. The club is updating the sound system by adding two speakers and an amplifier which will be connected to the microphone. Hopefully, this will enhance the sound to make the meetings more enjoyable. Don McAlpine was the winner of last year's Shannon Christmas Parade and he has unselfishly donated the prize money back to the Shannon Christmas Parade organisers. Well done Don! Mike Khull has donated his trailer to the club so we now own a registered and warranted trailer, many thanks to Mike. The club is still looking for an Editor and an Assistant Editor for our Spark newsletter, as well as a Secretary and perhaps again an Assistant Secretary. These are both rewarding and very necessary positions, so if you have any ideas or would like to have a try at either of these, please let us know. We can offer plenty of advice or help in getting set up into these positions. Well that's all my ramblings for now so keep safe and stay warm. Best Regards

Organisation has come together well for this major event. There is now a strong committee in place and working well. Many sites for the final Sunday of the week-long occasion have now been confirmed by many interesting displays and historic trades. The grounds have been drawn up into sites and are prepared on a plan. Examples are a machinery display, a Café from the 1800’s to early 1900’s to be run by ladies in period costume, using camp ovens, a copper, producing billy tea and scones! A live Blacksmith will be demonstrating his skills with an onsite forge and anvil. He’ll be producing his wares. Vern Jensen the wheelwright will be building wooden wheels and showing off his unique skills. Ivan Horn’s Model A camper and Gypsy caravan will also be on display. The Horowhenua Heritage Day 2021 promises to be a major event of huge interest. It is to be advertised throughout the lower North Island.
Our sincere condolences and sympathy go to Keith Bade’s family. Keith was a member of the Wellington branch and transferred to Horowhenua several years ago. He was very close to being a 50-year member having joined in the early '70’s. Keith had just completed a 1930 Triumph CTT that had taken him 40 years. He was only able to ride it in his driveway and the street before cancer affected his sight and his license was cancelled. He had just sorted out the clutch and gearbox teething issues and was looking forward to having a good run on the bike and to get it into top gear. He was not able to achieve this. Unfortunately, Keith was taken to hospital where he has since passed away and sadly never got to ride his beloved bike.

Des ______________________________________ _________________ Tom Robinson was another member who did much in the background, a valued member, instrumental in establishing our second clubrooms. The former Mayor of Levin, died suddenly in Foxton. A surveyor, he had the property drawn up and the building legally situated. He and his wife Naumai have a Ford Model A Sports Coupe, Cadillac, three Ford Model T’s, one of which was still under restoration. Further acknowledgement will be made in the next issue of Spark. “Our sincere sympathies to Naumai and family.”

Hi members, Bob and I have organised a club outing. This is to the Royal NZ Army Engineers Memorial Museum at Linton Camp. We visited there today for a reconnoitre! Very interesting! The museum is a trust and receives no Defence Department support, therefore a charge of $5 per head is requested. The visit will be limited to the first 24 members. This is due to space constraints. If necessary we can repeat the trip next year. They will not do weekends, so the date will be September 16 at 2 pm at the museum. The Army wants the minimum of cars, so it is proposed to take our large moderns up, seating 5 per car! I will have to collect names prior and email them details for security reasons. Bob and I thought our program should be, lunch at Murrayfields CafĂŠ at 12 midday, meet up, get into selected cars with a view to arrive Linton at 1.45pm. The tour will take about 2 hours, back to Murrayfields to collect our cars and home. We need to announce this one at the July/August meetings. Names and entry fee to me by September meeting please. Subject: Collection of old classic car photos Hello Vintage Car Club Administrator My name is Mike Williams. I am a keen photographer and classic car enthusiast. I have been taking photos of classic cars for years. Recently I came across an old book I had given my now deceased father around 35 years ago as a birthday present. It was in pretty bad shape but I managed to recover many pages. The collection is of well known, rare, and in some cases obscure cars. I spent a great deal of time trying to photograph these images. Some of the results were poor due to fading etc. and because these are photos of old photos. However many came out well and the resulting 400 plus images can be viewed by opening the link I have sent you below. Some of the photos are my own which are of higher quality. If any of your members are interested in downloading any of the images I will send you another link which will enable them to download any of the images at no cost. These images are good enough to use as screen savers or to print as small photos or send on to other interested folk. Just let me know if this is of any interest to you. If anyone would like a high resolution quality digital image suitable for large reproduction as a large photo or canvas I can do this at a cost of $20 as it takes time and a fair bit of specific post editing. The result can be pretty impressive as shown in the image comparison of the Alpha Romeo edited image to the original image-these are the first two images on the site. Those image files can be up to 20+MB once all editing is complete. If the image has been purchased and the recipient is not happy with the result I am happy to refund the cost. I am in the process of naming each image but it is a labourious process, so I have decided I will only name a print with make model and year if anyone wants to purchase one. Anyway regardless of this I hope you enjoy looking through and sharing these lovely old classics as much as I do. Tararua Trundle Sunday 22 November 2020 A portion of the cancelled National North Island Easter Rally will form this year’s Tararua Trundle. This will involve a simple straight forward set of rally instructions that are designed not to confuse or cause arguments! There is no competitive element to this rally. Traditionally the Tararua Trundle was an enjoyable days outing with our cars and fellow members. An invitation will be specially extended to Manawatu Branch who were strong in their support of our Easter Rally. A lunch will be provided by a country school who previously agreed to assist during Easter. We also will keep our side of the agreement to assist the school with our cars on show to their local community. A small fund raising event for the public during our lunch will be held where the school will benefit. This promises to be a great day out driving through our magnificent flat district. There will be a small off road section you won’t have experienced before. All cars will be able to easily negotiate this. Paekākāriki Auto Services has closed its doors after 100 years of repairing the cars of locals and those needing urgent help while travelling on State Highway 1 north of Wellington.
______________________________________ _________________ It’s the end of an era for the ‘oldest garage on the coast’. Owner Chris Clarke is retiring and the building has been sold to a Waikanae-based collective responsible for restaurants, a bakery and craft beer. Originally built in 1920, the garage was built by Mr Frank Holtom to serve the motoring public who needed tyre changes and petrol. He spotted a business opportunity with the growing number of automobiles making the trip over the Paekākāriki Hill Road to visit the beaches on the Kāpiti Coast.

Paekākāriki locals were sad to see their garage close down but the community organised a party for Chris to say farewell. However, the Covid restrictions put the kaibosh on their original plans but a few safe-distanced locals took to the streets with song to serenade Chris off on his new chapter. Chris bought the business back in 2002. He already owned the Action Auto workshop in Wellington and turned that over to a manager while he built up the Paekākāriki business. “The plan was to sell the Wellington business, but the economic crisis hit and I ended up keeping it until 2013.” Chris, who lives in Levin made the move to cut down on his long daily commute. “I’d only just moved in when there was the big flood and water came about half a metre up into the workshop.” After everything was cleaned up he used some stored paint he had inherited with the workshop to repaint. The bright blue, orange and yellow scheme, which are unlikely to survive the new owners’ refit, soon became synonymous.

After the easement of lockdown restrictions, locals finally got to see Chris off in befitting style at the Paekākāriki Bowling Club and now eagerly await the next steps in the journey of the Holtom’s Building. With structural repairs underway, and all other businesses retaining their lease, the new owners say they are already enjoying the vibrancy of Paekākāriki and are looking forward to adding to its charm. The Devastating Floods in Paekakariki Paekakariki township and Holtom’s Buildings 3 October 2003 The night before a mail plane had gone into the sea off Peka Peka beach and two on board were lost. Then torrential rain all night, so Highway 1 was blocked at Paekak. The hill had come down in several places, surging through the township and surrounding area. Traffic was diverted through Beach Road and Ames Street.

Well, Don McLaren heard a gunshot in the back yard of Peter Nightingale’s property the other day, saw Peter collapse on the ground in a heap in utter agony! No the local rabbit culler hadn’t missed his target, Peter’s Achilles tendon ruptured! Apparently a very loud noise! It’s described best as a gunshot by Peter and he’s as deaf as the nearby fence post! Peter says the pain was excruciating! He was not a happy chappie. He was hauled off to hospital in an ambulance. He hasn’t walked since – but fortunately he had this stowed away in the shed! He is learning the art of mobility in this for the next wee while until he comes right. Brendon Fox has been beavering away on the Krit and ex Horowhenua member Les Adlam’s Triumph dash. He says the dash has been giving him a good old fight, as he has now had six attempts at doing the first piece! He has finally resorted to using Jeff’s special propeller glue. Brendon claims if this dash ever comes apart, there are going to be a heap of worried pilots out there! He says the timber work
appears a bit patchy in places in the photographs. This will disappear as he applies the varnish. Preparation of the Krit mudguards is well advanced and nearly ready for their first coat of paint. They’ll be done in black.
Mike Khull hasn’t stopped either! His most recent project was recently removed from his garage and returned to its home and owner. Mike had been asked to repair some very tricky timberwork on a 1953 caravan. The Warrant of Fitness had been refused due to structural rot! He, once again was recommended by word of mouth because of his high quality workmanship. One of the crucial aspects to the job was removing rotten timber from behind the aluminium clad van without bending the flexible material and causing an accidental crease. That would have been a disaster. The owner was to decide on the preparation of the exterior surface of the aluminium. It looks stunning in its natural colour. It was to be painted as there are a number of age related blemishes.
His skills don’t merely apply to vehicles, his craftsmanship lends itself to every sort of woodwork! These chairs were estimated to be in excess of 120 years of age. Some delicate attention and a hidden dowel give Mike considerable satisfaction to save these antiques that they may continue to live on in a restored condition.

This photograph was supplied by Michael Gaffaney on club night 5 August 2020. It shows what is believed to be a 1929 or 1930 Dennis truck outside the warehouse of W Heyes and Son (Brentford UK) Ltd. The photograph is dated on the rear 2 July 1974. Shown above the front window is the name K Senior and Sons. Clearly the picture shows an English scene, despite the Yank Tank in the background, but more importantly on the bed of the truck are many cartons of New Zealand Apples. The cab of the truck displays advertising for New Zealand Five Star Apples as do the headlights, bonnet and windscreen. This was an advertising campaign in the UK on behalf of the NZ Apple and Pear Marketing Board. Interestingly this was during a bumper period in productivity and profit according to a report published by the board. Speaking to Michael suggests that these apple cartons have not been in use for many years gauged by the fact they have a hand hold on the end of each box. Research on W Heyes and Son and K Senior and Sons via the internet yield no further information.
Kapiti Coast Mid Week Run This month was the first since lockdown and it had been decided to only have a get together to allow people to have a relaxed time without having to move on to another location. So the Boundary Tap & Kitchen was booked for Wednesday 26th. Then came Covid-19 and back to level 2. Under level 2 the pub opens at 2pm, so an agreement was reached for us to arrive from 1pm instead of noon. Twenty five of us turned up before 1pm and waited around for the pub to open – which it didn’t! So I rang them and it turned out they had the booking written in for Thursday. The poor lady frantically called in some staff but the group had already booked to go to Fisherman’s Table instead. Needless to say that once settled in there we were the usual happy bunch and enjoyed the (mostly fish) meals.

‘Highland Fling Rally’ 24th – 26th April 2021 NEWSLETTER 18 August 2020 Information As I write this short update our largest city is currently in Level 3 lockdown, while the rest of us are abiding to Level 2 rules. A bit of a cliché I know, but we really are living in uneasy times and all trying our best to stay upbeat and project calm, without having any idea from one day to the next what the outlook is going to bring us. In the meantime, with trepidation we must all remain positive, and carry on as best we can with the planning of our future motoring events. Therefore, the organisers of the Highland Fling Rally have great pleasure in confirming to you the Highland Fling Rally is scheduled and booked in the VCC ‘Calendar of Events’ to take place Anzac Weekend 2021! My joint ‘Organiser Extraordinaire’ Alastair Jones sends this very positive message to you all. …”It has been most heartening to receive such a large number of emails and phonecalls of encouragement urging us not to give up on running “Highland Fling,” and many of our erstwhile entrants even asked to leave their monies with us until next year. No doubt this was to ensure they had a place in the “Fling” There was even quite a number who asked whether it was possible to reschedule it to later 2020, since the thought of having to wait until 2021 was a bit much to bear. On that note we didn’t consider it possible to fit it into an already jam-packed motoring event calendar, and as well late Autumn delivers superb colours, which are bound to captivate the considerable number of the ‘tender gender’ who have indicated they will be attending. All this preamble is to assure you it will be Anzac Weekend in 2021 even if we only have NZ entrants. Inevitably this dreaded virus has had an effect in a small way on our accommodation providers in Taihape as one of the smaller providers has been bought by the Government, for emergency housing, and Taihape Motels has been sold by Con (the Greek) who was such a good supporter of car club users, but alas to no avail the new owner is keen for a booked out weekend! There was an initial concern that lack of business at our Saturday lunch-stop bought about by canned tourism might cause them to shut-up shop, however, they seem to be made of back-country “hardiness” and are hanging right on in there. On that, not all who would have been involved this year have been told we will be back at the same time next year and keener than ever because of having to wait. With the long wait through “lockdown” I am sure your time will have been well spent in going over your vehicles which will eliminate all involuntary stops” ...
So, there you have it folks, watch this space, because we will be endeavouring to do our very best to make sure this event happen is going to happen. By the end of September, you will receive the Entry Form and another Newsletter. Anyhow with the China virus back with us, any club members wishing to purchase face masks, Sandra Collins (Pete’s wife) is the one to talk to. Sandra has just finished making a dozen face masks for the Spares Department. Daniel and Mark Morgan have been busy lately digging up a riverbank north of Levin! They have found a veteran 1914 Overland gearbox and diff, there is a chance the rest of the car could be there. After spending sometime on Google, looking at veteran Overland gearboxes and diffs, I think they come from the 1914 Model 79T But I could be wrong. Safe travelling everyone.

Kapiti Coast Mid Week Run (last Wednesday of the month)
Wednesday 30th September 2020 Visit to Foxton MAVtech; The National Museum of Audio Visual Arts and Sciences of NZ Trust Inc and then Mrs Nubbs Café.
Today we’re going to have a guided tour of the museum followed by a film selected by the archivist to be of interest to vintage car owners. The cost is $10 pp which Hal will collect as you arrive. After this, we have a booking at Mrs Nubbs Café in the main street, not far away. Programme: 10am Please gather promptly for the tour and film at MAVtech, Coronation Hall, Avenue Rd, Foxton. The hall is on your left just before you turn into the main street. Plenty of parking on the road. 1pm Lunch at Mrs Nubbs café, 72 Main St, Foxton. It’s opposite the New World supermarket. Although this looks like a small café, there is a large conservatory at the rear where we have tables reserved – just walk on through past the counter. Mrs Nubbs has asked that we pre-order lunches so, when you let us know that you’re coming, we’ll email a menu. Please let us know what you’d like by Sunday Sept 27th.
