It was great to get back to some normality and be able to hold our normal club night this month. We had a great turn out with around 70 members present, 8 visitors and new members, a grand total of 78. The meeting was interesting and enjoyable with the only letdown being the new speaker system, but this is just a teething problem and hopefully will be fixed before the next meeting. Andrew Coplan gave a great explanation of his experiences in isolation due to the Covid-19 requirements. Thanks to Don McLaren for organising this. Linda Gill does a great job organising the raffle and has been helped by Mark Morgan with his generous donations of honey and also Linda Barton made and gave a lovely loaf as a raffle prize. Also, Hec and Shirley Newton have donated some lovely period costumes, hats etc, which will be on display in the library at next month’s club meeting. These will be available to all club members for perhaps a small or gold coin donation to the library. If you are interested in this apparel I would suggest that you come a little bit earlier as it is all in great condition and hard to get so will disappear very fast. Bob Barton did well with his first article for the club in the latest Edition of Beaded Wheels. On the downside, some lowlife stole the outside tap on the clubrooms and left the open pipe with water gushing out. This was reported to Tom Hayes who rang me so I contacted John White who obtained another tap and rushed down to the clubrooms with it, but unfortunately not only was it getting dark, John couldn't find the water toby so had to fit the new tap while battling against the water pressure. Although he got absolutely soaked he successfully fitted the new tap. So many thanks to John and as the thief has been caught, hopefully, we won't have to supply John with a wetsuit. Our next club meeting is on 4 November and will start with a Special General Meeting which we need to hold to discuss the alterations needed to the Club Constitution and for nominating Life Membership. On Sunday 1 November is the launching of Mick Peryer’s latest book. He has arranged quite a day’s outing with a band and entertainment, even a Mister Whippy. He has asked the club for as many cars as possible to attend and be on display. It is suggested that we make this a BYO picnic lunch and Mick has promised us a lovely sunny day. The cars will have to be at the Waikanae Estuary car park south end of Tutere St by 1.00 pm. Our Speaker for the November meeting will be Wing Commander John Lanham of Masterton. Our normal monthly meeting will follow. Background National Office earlier this year, provided all branches with a constitution template and a new clause (23) which needed to be included. We also need to correct the club name in the constitution, to match that registered with the Registrar of Incorporated Societies. Your committee has prepared this new constitution which has been reviewed and approved by National Office, so the next stage is for it to be ratified, and formally signed. Many of you will receive a copy of the constitution by email. Those that are not on email will receive it by post. Dates for 2021 - 25th to 30th October: Dates for the 2021 Targa VCC time trials, (in conjunction with the main Targa NZ event), start with Documentation Labour Day Monday 25th October and finish Saturday 30th October 2021. Our full time trial event will be over 5 days (Tuesday to Saturday), and we'll also offer a 2 day time trial for the last 2 days, (Friday/Saturday), to enable those who can't join us for the full event to enter for the last 2 days, (as we tried to do this year, but all cancelled due to Covid-19). The route is yet to be finalised, but heads up it will be central North Island, with a good chance it may start in Taranaki and finish in the Hawkes Bay. Hopefully this will enable easier travel plans for most of us, especially those coming up from the South Island. As we've done previously, our VCC time trial group will most likely get together on the afternoon of Sunday 24th October for our own meet & greet, afternoon tea, Scrutineering, RallySafe installation etc. (Subject to Covid-19 etc Targa may also run a small event in April/May 2021, but it's not practical to include a VCC time trial component in that event). 2. HOROWHENUA VINTAGE CAR CLUB MINUTES OF GENERAL MEETING, 7 OCTOBER 2020 Meeting was opened at 7.30pm by Chairman, Des St Clare, with a welcome to visitors, existing and new members, after a long Covid-19 lockdown break. Des mentioned he was trying out a new speaker system just installed to improve the sound in the clubrooms. He reminded all members not to be complacent with the dreaded Covid still lingering in the background, so please use Tracer Code, Hand Sanitiser and sign the Register at the door on arrival. Rod challenged everyone to guess the part he was holding taken from a car he purchased during lockdown. Guessed it was a window, but not the car – a Singer Junior 1928 Soft-top. Andrew Coplin, invited by Don McLaren to speak at the meeting on his experience being “locked up” during Covid-19 in Australia and New Zealand. New Members: Russell and Maureen Johnson Appointment of new Secretary Des introduced the new Secretaries for the Club, Bill Laney and Denise Liddle. Bill responded stating they were very happy to meet the challenge. (Spark October 2020). Cancer Society: Thanking the Club for its donation towards the cancelled Daffodil Day. Insurance: Confirming payment of account. Targa Rally: Deferred until October 2021. Segment in the rally for VCC to do Time Trials. St Mary’s Scout Group: A card thanking the Club for allowing them to use our “wonderful rooms” for their Queen Scout Awards Dinner. Treasurer’s Report Incoming and outgoing transactions from July and August statements were read. Andrew Judd moved as correct, seconded Bill Laney. Plaques from cancelled Easter Rally still available. Cost $30.00. Jackie mentioned the need to respect all funds held on behalf of the Club as they are a backup should our annual Swap Meet not be held (raises over $12,000), or if AP&I is in a situation where it would have to sell land and we would need to purchase or raise a loan, we would require proof we have funding to back up repayments. Accounts are filed with the Incorporated Society. Club Captain’s Report. An enjoyable visit to Linton Military Camp by members recently. A real “eyeopener” to some. It was expressed by the Camp, they would be happy to host another visit from us in the future. Sunday 18 October: Rush Museum. $15.00. Meet at Clubrooms, 10am. Early lunch at Woolshed, then to Feilding. Light afternoon snack. Old racing cars on display and ladies/gents not interested in racing cars, could go walkabout into the town. Sunday 1 November: Mik Peryer’s Book Launch “Gay Goose” (Oh dear. Now microphone not working!!) 1pm. Waikanae Estuary: Cars to assemble in car park (would like 10-15 vehicles). Bring a picnic lunch. Attending will be the Mayor, a band and a piper, along with Mr Whippy! 2pm: Book launch. Story about a black swan who could not fly and who mated with a white goose at the Estuary and were together for 18 years! Mik described it as a “true love story”. 22 November: Tararua Trundle. Using the rally route which was marked for the cancelled Easter Rally, a picnic-type lunch break, then back to Clubrooms. Unfortunately the Veteran’s Rally is on the same day, a Picnic in the Park (by the toilets in Woodville). Suggested a notice be sent to neighbouring branches to advise them of our event, as a choice. 6 December: A reminder of our Christmas Function. January 2021: Wellington Anniversary Weekend. Friday: Wellington Branch Club Captain’s Monte Carlo Rally. The Club would like to enter again. Require at least 4 vehicles. “Creamed it” last two years! Sunday: Burma Rally, Wanganui. Vintage weekend. Book accommodation early. Art Deco weekend, Napier. Book early for this event. Organisers have agreed to a refund should there be a cancellation of the event. Spares Department report: Attended Manawatu Swap Meet. Comments in Spark’s report. Received e-mail from National Office to provide an inventory of stock and hinting that spare parts all over the country to be computerised! Spoke to a couple of
other VCC Parts Departments who didn’t want a bar of it. Sent the report, but not heard anything more. Received Massey Ferguson tractor and Morris Minor parts,1939 Chevrolet motor. A contact at Vehicle Testing Station told us of a shed full of parts, result coming away with very little. Working bees, cleaning up, continues. Library report Pauline St Clare is doing a great job on the Archives and the Kelly’s always helping in the background. Appealed to members to use the facilities. Welfare: Pete Collins still in Auckland hospital. Had to return to Operating Theatre due to complications. Now in ICU on ventilator as having difficulty breathing. Latest report, making progress slowly. It is believed there is a “Give-a-Little” page on Facebook. Ian Bade, on behalf of his family, took this opportunity to thank the Club for their kind messages and condolences. He also thanked Winton for his visit to the family home and his assistance during the recent passing of his brother, Keith. Keith was a long-standing member of the Club. General Business: There will be a Special General Meeting prior to the General Meeting in November. This SGM will be to discuss amendments to the Club’s Constitution and Life Memberships. Amendments will be e-mailed out to all members before the meeting. There has been a change to our Title and Certificate of Incorporation. These suggestions have been approved by National Office. A tap was discovered missing outside the Clubrooms causing a flood. John White has now fixed the problem and discovered the whereabouts of the toby. The culprit who stole our tap has since been caught! Levin Council Civic Event: Saturday 28 November, Christmas Parade. Cars required. 4pm start. Details to be confirmed. Working Bee this Saturday. 9am to 12 midday. Someone from Whangarei is to meet with Callum in Spares Department, 8.30am. Andrew Coplin – invited guest speaker: Shared an interesting account of his experiences when travelling to Australia to visit a sick brother during lockdown. Andrew was quarantined in Melbourne and how it compared with quarantine processes in Auckland on his return. Meeting concluded at 8.55pm. Supper served.
Brucie’s Burblings Isn’t it great to be back to some sort of normality where we can have monthly club meetings and activities? I think that we may be in our new normal and it ain’t too bad. The run to Linton and the Museum visit was fully subscribed. We intend repeating that run next year to allow more members to experience the exceptional displays. Thanks to Bob and John.

We are asking anyone wishing to join the team defending the Challenge Trophy with Wellington Branch (Monte Carlo Rally Wellington - Wanganui 15 January) to contact Verdon or myself. turns This month Spark turns 100! Well not really! At least it is our 100th issue since numbering of the document commenced. This prompted the question why? How was it that Spark had clearly been produced for a longer period yet only reached number 100? A little known fact is that Spark commenced with our first Editor Barry Jenkins, who motored in an Austin 7 and an Austin 7 Special along with his wife Beryl. Peter Nightingale says both took on the job of producing our first Newsletter and did a marvellous job. Spark progressed through the years never actually being numbered and only identified sequentially by month and year of issue. Bev and Fred Foothead decided to stand down from their role as joint Editors in 2011. With the change, Graeme McKenzie was at the helm as Chairman, believed we ought to commence numbering each issue which would allow librarians and members to more easily identify an issue when sorting and reading them. In addition it was thought a bit of colour could be introduced. Peter took on the Editors role and commenced at issue No 1. Another ninety nine issues later, in October 2020 we have chalked up 100 numbered issues! The front cover of issue No: 1. The first coloured photo was Bruce Scott starting his 1911 Ford Model T.

A Note from our Patron Tom Hayes Congratulations! Spark is now a centenarian in its present format – yes, 100 issues with colour photos on the cover! Issue No 1 featured Bruce Scott’s 1911 Model T Ford and was printed in September 2011. The Editor was Peter Nightingale. Of course we acknowledge the very first issue of Spark in November 1977, edited by Barry Jenkins. Our Branch was incorporated on 28th October 1977, some 43 years ago. Issue No 99, last month’s featured the article on W Heyes and Son (Brentford) Ltd. There is some information ‘online’ about this company and directorate if you wish to follow up. Issue No 98, August featured my article on W M Easthope, Cycle Engineers of Levin. Many thanks to the Editor Mark for the enlargement of the veteran motorcycle. It has been identified by Ian Bade as a 1904 FN (Fabrique Nationale) made in Belgium. Thank you Ian for your comprehensive research. It is really appreciated. Congratulations to our very many contributors, typists and editors. What will the next 100 issues bring? Cheers

The rally day from the North Island Easter Rally that never was! This is the long route of approximately 65 miles and 2 hours duration. A relaxed non competitive event run with straight forward instructions. Expect to cover a small section of unsealed road. A full tank of fuel is advised for a very scenic drive around our flat motoring district. The lunch-stop will be at a local country school, where a prepared lunch will be available to all entrants. Toilet facilities will be on-site. This is a chance for the parents and children to raise funds for some new playground equipment. The public of the area will be invited to view the display of our cars, for which parents will charge a gold coin entry. All entrants are encouraged to wear period costume consistent with the age of their car, however this is not compulsory. Let’s make our first proper outing since lockdown fun and pleasurable, without the pressure to compete. Relax and enjoy friends, our cars, and the countryside. Wednesday 16 September dawned clear and windy after a stormy night of thunder and lightning! Between Covid and the weather Gods, Bob and I wondered whether the trip would go ahead! Being limited to 24 attendees all was good with the Covid bit, so we all assembled at Murrayfield’s Cafe for a great lunch (note - all Bob’s outings start or finish with food!) and a head count. We somehow got 25? I had Bob extract the $5 entrance fee. Not too many screams of pain there and off we went to Linton. Linton Camp has grown and changed so much since Colin Brooks and I served there. It is easy to get lost, we had no criminals or terrorist’s among us, so the gate check went okay. We all parked as directed on the once-sacred parade ground and we were met by the museum director, retired Lt Colonel Joe Hollander. There is a lovely NZ Army Engineers Chapel next door, still used for services, this was transported here by the Engineers and restored to its present glory. Our John Forster played a great rendition of ‘Amazing Grace’ on the organ for us. The Museum itself is small, hence the low numbers
but has a wealth of informative exhibits from the Maori wars to present peacekeeping deployments. Joe led us through with an interesting commentary. Did you know that the Maori wars Gate Pa trench defences were studied in the Imperial War College and were a pattern for the WWI trench systems? Joe himself is an interesting character; he started off in the National Service days, stayed in as a Territorial, gained rank and then was commissioned into the regular forces, working his way from original recruit Private to Lt Colonel at retirement. An interesting career!

Joe and his unpaid helpers, all ex-servicemen have a little known gem hidden away here, this is a part of our Kiwi heritage. Although this museum has kept and saved a lot of

Kapiti Coast Mid Week Run 30 September 2020 A total of 36 members enjoyed beautiful weather in the lovely township of Foxton. First stop was at “MAVtech” (The National Museum of Audio Visual Arts and Sciences of NZ Trust Inc) which is housed in a purpose built picture theatre (known as the “Town Hall”) built in 1926 as a replacement for the public hall/theatre called “Coronation Hall 1911” on that site which had been destroyed by fire. Having become derelict in the 1970’s, it was rescued by Peter Edwards, the founder of MAVtech, who oversaw its redecoration and reinstatement of the 1930’s era seating. The upstairs “dress circle” has been reinstated as the theatre with downstairs housing its substantial and well presented museum. It is now one of very few theatres left that are capable of showing 35mm film via traditional carbon-arc projectors (1938 Peerless brand). They hold circa 100,000 audio records and 5 million feet of film. We were treated to a screening of “Elephant Walk” an action movie of 1954 starring Elizabeth Taylor, Peter Finch and Dana Andrews, enjoyed by all as it is very well filmed with amazing visual effects for that period. The museum is run by volunteers of which a large number turned out to welcome and host us including a gift of a bag of Jaffas for each patron! It was wonderful stepping back to our younger years complete with an authentic experience – at first there was good picture with no sound, then sound with no picture, thankfully followed by a faultless performance through to “THE END”. From the cinema we travelled a short distance to the main street to Mrs Nubbs Cafe for a delicious lunch. The staff at Mrs Nubbs were equally friendly and efficient. We had arranged to pre-order lunches which had meals on the table very promptly accompanied by the cheerful buzz of chatter which is characteristic of these mid-week events. A special thank you to Jim and Sarah Harper and their team at MAVtech and to Ana and her team at Mrs Nubbs along with all attending members for helping to make this a special day. Hal O’Rorke

ENTRY FORM Regrettably we have been informed of a last-minute cancellation caused by COVID, that one of our venue providers is now not available causing us to look for an alternative venue and ‘tweak’ slightly our Saturday rally route - hence, the delay in emailing to you the 2021 Entry Form. However, I can assure you the Information Sheet and Form will be sent out by early November.

The Manawatu Swap Meet has been and gone for 2020. Covid 19 unfortunately played a part in major events this year; Manawatu took the gamble with their Swap Meet. The outcome was the indoor venue being only half full of sellers and a noticeable drop in buyers; however pickings were excellent with Horowhenua members doing well. Over the last month Spares had two jobs offsite, resulting in the pickup of a complete 1939 Chevrolet motor, along with some Morris Minor engine parts and some 1950’s Massey Ferguson Tractor parts. The Manawatu Classic Motorcycle Club Swap Meet is on Sunday 8 November (8am to 1.30pm) at the Manawatu Vintage Car Club rooms. Over the years this event has turned up some rare items of interest. Last months working bee was a relaxing affair, with one member, working the broom very hard or should that be leaning on the broom! Must’ve been an English broom.(Bob) Safe travelling everyone.

Kapiti Coast Mid Week Run (last Wednesday of the month)
Wednesday 28 October 2020 Tour of The Halfway House, 246 Middleton Road, Glenside. Kevin and Joanna Buck have organised a tour of the Halfway House in Glenside. This Victorian house, built in 1885, was a coach stop from Wellington. The house is located mid way between Wellington and Porirua and horses were changed at the Halfway House following the steep climb out of Wellington. We are scheduled to be at The Halfway House at 1.30 pm. There are several car parks on the property, and there is parking on Middleton Road. Entry is by koha, and there is an opportunity to buy plants. The Halfway House is directly behind Twiglands Gardeners World on Middleton Road. Prior to this visit we will be lunching at The Borough, 162-168 Main Road Tawa. Parking is available on Main Road shopping centre and the Tawa Mall car park in Oxford Street (directly behind the Main Road shops). Gather at 11.30 am for lunch at 12.00 noon.
