I would like to start this month’s chat by welcoming our new member Ivan Huntley. Ivan has a 1958 Chev Impala Convertible and a 1988 Chev Corvette. The Tararua Rodders Chrome ‘n Custom Show last weekend was a huge success and the display of our club’s garage erected in the AP&I showroom looked great. It was well visited by thousands of viewers. Peter Nightingale’s Ford truck was displayed showing its beginning stages of restoration. He also had a display of parts and a magneto testing machine. Beside the garage Chris Clarke's car was shown in a crate as it was shipped to NZ from England. This was very well done and complete with spare tyres, cobwebs and even a spider! Also in the garage were vintage motorcycles while outside the garage, we had a display of club cars that really set it off. Thank you to all those that assisted in setting this up, especially Jeff Fox for his expertise and knowledge on how the display went together. During the day Spares was open as was the Library, both did well and were well attended by the public. Our club meeting this month was also well attended with about 60 people and the main discussion of the evening, the insurance of the clubrooms. The outcome, that we should get more information on the value and replacement costs before going any further. The evening finished with a chat from George Mclean on his experiences with making LED globes! This was very ‘enlightening’ and then the night ended with some friendly chatting amongst ourselves over supper. This month’s working bee was attended by 10 people as Spares was closed due to the Manawatu Swap Meet. However the morning went well, we were all rewarded with a very generous serving of Linda Barton’s sticky date pudding served with ice cream and heaps of hot chocolate sauce! So, sorry Callum I had your helping for seconds!

An invitation has been extended to the VCC by the Targa VCC Steward Rod Corbett, to join in at the venues to view Targa cars and display your own VCC vehicles in conjunction with Targa Time Trial cars. This is similar to the 2018 event. The rally culminates in The Square Palmerston North on Friday 1 November and Saturday 2 November 2019. The information will take 3 pages to publish. Thank you to everyone that was able to take part in our National Day - the Daffodil Rally for Cancer. I am looking forward to reading about the various Branch events in the next Beaded Wheels. I took part in Central Hawke's Bay's event and we had a great day commencing with a public car show and then driving out to the Coast for a wonderful afternoon tea at a historic homestead. Thanks to all your efforts, I am absolutely delighted to announce that we have raised $75,000.00 for the Cancer Society! This total wouldn't have come about without a lot of hard work and volunteer hours, so well done to you all. This means that we have donated a huge $175,000.00 over the last 3 years. I hope you are all as proud of this event as I am. While we don't normally single out branches (as this event is about the collective total), I do want to mention Marlborough Branch who raised a massive $17,500 this year. What an amazing achievement from their Branch and just goes to show what can be done. At the August AGM the decision was made to continue to support the Cancer Society as part of our National Day. We do take the feedback on board so keep sending any through to events@vcc.org.nz. The date for next year has been set for Sunday 23 August 2020 which is the Sunday before the Cancer Society's Daffodil Day on the 28th. I realise that this time of year is not the best weather-wise but we need to have our event close to Daffodil Day so as to benefit from their publicity and promotion. Melissa is also going to send to all the Branch coordinators a draft email to go to their local Cancer Society to let them know how we went (if you want to use it). Ed was a member of the Management Committee of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand and a long-time member of the Wanganui Branch. He was a very good friend to our Branch and known by many. Our thoughts are with Hinemoa and the family.
Saturday October 12 A run to Paraparaumu ending up at the premises of Auto Classics. These are the business premises of member Ross Church. We will be shown through the property and experience a little entertainment. At the conclusion we will visit a CafĂŠ for a relaxed get together. Timings to be advised.

LIBRARY: Don McLaren reported on open day at Hot Rod show and flow of books into the Library. GENERAL BUSINESS: Insurance for Clubrooms. New Quote increases sum insured from $425,206 to $1,051,500 and the annual premium doubled to around $4000. Committee asked members for their views. Several members felt this was excessive as a replacement cost and asked the Committee to go back and seek additional information. Jeff Fox offered to provide a detailed estimate of current replacement cost. The Hot rod club event was successful and they were grateful for our support. Colin Brooks advised that the Easter rally arrangements were in hand and entries were coming in. He would be asking members for help during part of the Rally weekend with various small tasks. Meeting closed at 8.40pm.
Brucie’s Burblings The run last month started with a visit to Steam Incorporated at Paekakariki in the old loco depot. Members met in the carpark at 1.30 pm and following a short safety briefing split into two groups for a guided tour through to facilities. As both steam locos were being used the next day for a trip, both were in steam ready for an early start on Sunday morning. This proved a good chance to get up close a personal with a hot steam loco. Some members took the opportunity to climb up onto the footplate where the various controls were explained. Other non-operative locos were examined and the total rebuild of Ka 945 was explained as the boiler was off and the frame without wheels, running gear and cab was on an adjacent track. A short run to Waikanae via Paraparaumu Beach was completed by most members and an afternoon tea at the Olive Grove Café was enjoyed by all. October 12
A run starting outside 22 Domain Road Otaki. (It is on the left, west down Mill Road past Otaki College) Start/meeting time is 12.30 pm. This is a short semi-competitive run where there are a few questions to answer and some silent checks to find and record. There are no traps in the instructions and the straight-ahead rule applies if there is no instruction for the intersection encountered. Finish point is Auto Classics in Paraparaumu Beach where there will be a short general knowledge quiz with prizes then a walk around the corner to the 180 Degree Cafe for afternoon tea.

Christmas get together. Lunch at the club rooms meeting at 12 noon and eating at 1.00 pm. More details next month.
Our last club night was a little different as we had no guest speaker which gave everyone a chance to mix and mingle over a cuppa and biscuit. We intend continuing this format every 3 or 4 months. Safe motoring until next month.

My name is Simon and I am on the front cover of this magazine alongside the impressive steam engine. Wilf Milner a family friend invited me to view the steam train in the company of the Vintage Car Club members. On Saturday 7th September the weather was fine and down to Paekakariki we went. A good number of members turned up and we all met for a safety briefing before viewing the train and workshops. A huge black steam engine was on a turntable and surprisingly only two men were easily able to turn it into position for the many carriages to be connected to form the train. We were all invited to climb up into the engine cab, it was hot and steamy but surprisingly clean. We didn’t see into the firebox or shovel the coal onto the fire, I guess safety precautions prevailed. I did find that although the engine was under steam pressure it was to my surprise fairly quiet. The carriages were extremely well restored with comfortable red leather seats, brass lamps, rope luggage racks, varnished woodwork
and contrasting white pressed tin ceilings. What a great nostalgic presentation they make and it must be thanks to all the hard working and enthusiastic volunteers of the Paekakariki Steam Enthusiasts club. The train was steaming to Wellington the next day Sunday to pick up paying passengers for a Daffodil Day excursion to the Wairarapa. I really enjoyed this day and my thanks go to Club Captain Bruce and the Paekakariki fellows for a great day out.

Kapiti Coast Mid Week Run

Thirty four of us met at Relish Café in Waikanae for morning tea and a ”buttie” before going across the road to the Church Hall where we were entertained to a very amusing description by Rick Goodman of how Goodman Contracting began. From the early days on the farm, with a bit of contracting on the side, to clearing land for state houses with an old Fordson tractor, Rick told several amusing stories of things that had gone wrong. After it had been pointed out to the people concerned that the worst could happen, being ignored, and then when it did happen in one case, being apologised to! There are perks in every job though, and Rick told us about the Railways de-railing a wagon with a load of cheeses about 30 years ago which he reckoned they were still eating! After the talk, we went back across the road to the Goodman yard to first look in the machine work shop where, because they are dealing with big machines which have big components, they have to have big machine tools to cope with the work. For example the radial drill is capable of drilling an 80 mm hole in steel. They have four lathes the biggest having an 800mm swing and a 3 metre length bed. Everything in the workshop was kept in a beautifully clean condition. We then moved into the larger part of the workshop where they were reconditioning two huge scrapers that they have brought in from one of the mines in Australia. A tyre for one of these things costs about $15,000 and a new machine from America
would cost about $1,800,000 so it is cheaper to buy second hand and fully recondition. These machines look so small when you see them working in the distance, but when you stand next to them, they are enormous. We then went on to see Rick’s “museum” which had a number of interesting vehicles in it such as a small crawler tractor which is powered by a diesel engine and has a small petrol engine fitted to start it. Resting peacefully down at the back of the yard was a line up of redundant earthmoving machinery which, as we were told, is virtually valueless because modern standards demand that earth-moving machinery is environmentally friendly and is fitted with GPS. After this fascinating visit we adjourned to the Hungarian Café at Lindale where we enjoyed a very pleasant set lunch. Thanks to our organisers and Rick Goodman for such an interesting outing. ART DECO WEEKEND 2020 A SPECIAL INVITATION FROM HBVCC Come to Napier and join the HBVCC for Art Deco Weekend 2020 from February 20th -23rd. Kindly sponsored again this year by Euro City Ltd In 2020 the Featured Group will be an A-Z of Motor Vehicles. We are aiming to have a motor vehicle representing each letter of the alphabet. This may be a make or model. There will be a mixture of cars, commercials and motorcycles. Also we expect a mix of veterans, vintage and PV’s… manufactured in UK, Europe and USA. We currently have several cars coming in 2020 that have not been to ADW before. These include NZ’s second Duesenberg, our first L29 Cord, and a Stutz to name a few. We are still looking for a “Napier” vehicle to represent the letter “N”. I am also trying to find the owner of the Willys Knight roadster circa 192931 era that has the unusual paint design on the doors. We would also like to get leads on vehicles or vehicle models starting with letters Q, U, X, Y, Z. Please email any leads or ideas to stevetrott@xtra.co.nz asap. For 2020 the annual rally is again on Friday and we plan to have a touring run plus a picnic lunch at a great lunch venue. On Saturday we will have the morning tea and car show and popular choice at the HBVCC clubrooms, followed by the grand parade. Sunday events include a breakfast surprise at the HBVCC clubrooms and the Gatsby picnic in the afternoon. There are many other ADT events to choose from on Friday and Saturday nights. Come and join the other 180 plus club eligible vehicles we expect to enter the 2020Event. Go to the HBVCC website for an Entry Form. (www.hbvcc.org.nz). Entry forms for 2020 are available now. Accommodation in Napier is already filling up for Art Deco Weekend so book now to avoid disappointment. As members would have noted from last month’s Spark, the Horowhenua spares team was planning a visit to the Wairarapa Vintage Car Club spares shed on September the 15th. It was a highly successfully day, a good time was had by the 11 members who made the journey over the Tararua Ranges to Clareville Showgrounds. We were treated to an excellent morning tea, which included a live hockey game as the Wairarapa Hockey Association was playing below the Clubrooms. After tea and coffee, it was downstairs to the spares shed which was an eye opening experience. Rare items which included a 1915 Paige fuel tank along with a pair of Veteran Star hubs, a complete pair of 1920’s or early 30’s International truck headlights, a collection of pre 1930’s car manuals including a rare 1910 to 1913 Flanders Manual were discovered. Flanders is a car manufacturer from Belgium! Some of these manuals were purchased, including the Flanders manual and are now in Pauline’s and the library’s safe hands. Everyone had an excellent morning especially Bob and George who found items they had been hunting for. After all this we retired to the Post Office Hotel in Pahiatua for an excellent lunch. Kapiti Coast Mid Week Run (last Wednesday of the month)
Wednesday 30 October 2019 Visit to the New Zealand Police Museum, Papakowhai Road, Porirua. Established in 1908 the collection was originally modelled on Scotland Yard’s Black Museum. Today the Museum houses and exhibits a large collection of New Zealand Police cultural property and criminal cases. A modern facility, the New Zealand Police Museum provides education programmes to all ages, using examples of policing excellence and telling the stories of some of the country's more infamous crimes.
But first, lunch! 11.30 to 11.45am Meet at Kaizen Café, 17 Parumoana St, by Pataka Museum, Porirua. Ample parking at the rear of the museum down the lane alongside. Buy lunch at the counter and tables are reserved for us. 1.00pm
