It certainly feels great to have the club up and running in a more or less normal fashion although we still have to take precautions and obey the rules regarding Covid 19, so please make sure to scan the Covid signs or sign in when you are using the club rooms. This month’s meeting went well starting with a Special General Meeting which was needed to confirm the amendments to the Constitution and to elect our new Life Members. These are Bev and Pete Kelly and Mike Khull. This is a very rewarding gesture to honour their time, effort and work together with many years of true dedication that they have afforded to the club. So congratulations to these 3 people, their awards will be presented at our Christmas Dinner Party on 6 December. The meeting was well attended by about 70 members and concluded with a very well presented presentation on Vintage Aviation from Wing Commander John Lanham who was introduced and assisted by Grant Prankerd. John has fantastic knowledge of the vintage aviation industry and has offered to return to the club at a later stage to enlighten us further with his knowledge if we want him to. Peter Collins as you all know, Pete very sadly passed away on Saturday 31 October. His funeral was held at the clubrooms on Thursday 5 November. It was a wonderful Service and I felt very proud of the huge turnout of club members and a great showing of 36 club cars. It was a very emotional occasion and Pete will be sadly missed. He was an exceptional club member always at the ready and making sure everything went according to plan. He was the backbone of the annual Swap Meet and I don’t know how we will manage without him. There were some great stories told of his escapades. He was a loving husband and father. Our thoughts and condolences go out to his wife Sandra and their family. I would add that it has been estimated that there were over 200 people at his funeral. Hopefully at this week’s Working Bee (Saturday morning 7 November) we will be getting the carpet in the club rooms re-stretched. Many thanks to, Jeff Fox and his contacts. If time permits, we may be able to catch up with a few other chores in and around the clubrooms that have fallen behind. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the committee members for not only the support that they give me but the endless hours of work they do behind the scenes. Without them the club could not run with the harmony and smoothness as it does now. We are still looking for an editor and maybe a sub editor to take over from Mark Gibson. Mark has done a great job over the last 7 years and wants to retire from that position. He has been more than generous over the last 6 months in keeping the magazine going and he would be available to help anyone learn how it operates so
please if you would like to give it a go or feel that you could help out put your hand up. It would be a really rewarding position. As we are so close to the end of the year we will not be having a speaker at next month’s club meeting so will just have a friendly get together over supper. So until then. Best Regards

HOROWHENUA VINTAGE CAR CLUB MINUTES OF SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING AND GENERAL MEETING, 4 NOVEMBER 2020 Des St Clare, Chairman, opened the meeting at 7.30pm, asking all members to be upstanding to honour and respect Peter Collins. Peter sadly passed away on Saturday 31 October, in Auckland Hospital. Our thoughts and condolences from the Club to members of Peter’s family. Funeral service to be held at the Clubrooms, Thursday 5 November, 1.30pm. Members with Club cars are asked to park them within the grounds by 1pm. Visitors: David Burke (Otaki), Stan Garmonsway (Manawatu VCC) Guest Speaker on Vintage Aviation: Wing Commander John Lanham, Assisted by Grant Prankerd. Special General Meeting: Arranged for members to pass amendments made to the Horowhenua Vintage Car Club Constitution (everyone had a copy sent by mail or e-mail) and to vote on nominations received for new Life Memberships. Hard copies on table. Constitution amendments: Des St Clare (Chairman), along with Jackie Job (Treasurer) asked if everyone was happy with the amendments to the Constitution. If happy, could we have the amendments stamped, signed and made official tonight. Required 75% to agree. Bruce Lawrie moved the Branch adopt the amendments to the Constitution. Seconded Bob Barton. By show of hands, all in favour. Chairman, Secretary and two committee members signed official document. Life Membership nominations: Peter and Beverley Kelly, Mike Khull. Des St Clare spoke on behalf of Bev and Pete Kelly, members since 1963, became our librarians for 9 years and still very active within the Club. John White spoke for Mike Khull who joined the Club in 1989 and it was due to Mike that the Clubrooms we have are as they are today. All nominees deserve to have this honour. They were asked to leave the room during the voting process and vote was by show of hands. All were accepted as Life Members. (75% acceptance required.) Des extended congratulations to all. Library Report: (Don McLaren) The number of books in the library has slowly grown. These books are proving invaluable. During a recent Branch visit to Terry Rush’s Museum, Peter Nightingale commented to Terry we had information regarding original race programmes in our Library. With the help of Pauline, information located and shared with Terry. Thanks for everyone’s support. A number of ladies’ period costumes have been donated to the Club for sale and are on display in the library at a cost of a gold coin per item. General business: (Des St Clare) The carpet is being stretched on Saturday to avoid further damage. Thanks to Jeff Fox for arranging. Winton Cleal reported he discussed with Des the Clubrooms be offered to Peter Collins’ family for the funeral service. Des stated the Clubrooms had been offered and accepted. Vehicle Security: A member held up a vehicle/trailer “clamp” (supplied by a friend) and put it on display for other members to observe and to ask questions at cup of tea time about how secure this item actually is! Cheryl Brooks asked, on behalf of Mark Gibson, if anyone has information for Spark, could this be provided by Friday. Guest Speaker: Wing Commander John Lanham was introduced by Grant Prankerd. John gave an informative presentation of slides displaying vintage aircraft from WW1. John shared his amazing knowledge of past aviation, including his connection with Peter Jackson and his aircraft collection, holding members in awe for over an hour. Thank you, John, for taking us all back in time by sharing your experiences and incredible knowledge, along with taking questions from the floor. Meeting concluded at 9.35pm with supper served.
Brucie’s Burblings Firstly I must acknowledge Peter Collins passing and the tremendous amount of work he did for the branch, most of which was behind the scenes. Several members attended his funeral service at our club rooms and provided and avenue of club vehicles for Pete to pass on his final departure. A very good run was held arriving at the Terry Rush Museum in Feilding after a stop for early lunch at the Woolshed at Sanson. A good chance to get our vehicles out and let them stretch their legs. A great museum especially if you are interested in historic motor racing on the Levin or Manfeild circuits. Thanks to Bob for organising this. We also had a good turnout assisting Mik Peryer with his children’s book launch about Thomas the Goose. Mik’s books are based on fact and people mentioned are not fictional. I personally know some of them. Twelve cars were on display for the public and I must say Mik turned on a beautiful sunny day for the event. Coming Events November 22 – Sunday. The Tararua Trundle. Please get your entry in ASAP. A copy of the entry is in last month's Spark. If you choose to be considered for trophies, entries for a short competitive section will be received on the day before the driver’s briefing. November 28 – Saturday. The Horowhenua Civic Parade and Carnival. Meet at the clubrooms at 3pm. The Parade starts at 4pm from York Street and ends at Adventure Park for the carnival until 9pm. December 6 – Sunday. Christmas Lunch. Starts 12 noon and sit down to eat at 1pm. Dress up in costume. Vote for Best Restoration 2020. $30 per person. All payments must be received by 30 November. Thirty four people enjoyed a meal at the Woolshed Cafe at Sanson, with thirty people heading off to the Terry Rush Car Museum at Feilding. Terry gave a first class talk on the history of his collection while Joy, his wife supplied the drinks and biscuits. Terry is very knowledgeable and gave much of the history of the Levin race track and the drivers who raced there. He also told us of the early history of the Manfeild racing track which he helped to get up and running. Bill Cottle and Bill Laney were reminiscing about their racing days at Levin. A very interesting Museum, and a great day out, I look forward to another visit sometime.
I used to have one of these! I still do! I use it to push Des about, when he spits his dummy!

Sunday 1 November 2020 Mik Peryer launched his new book he had written called ‘Thomas’, at the Waikanae Lagoon. The weather was warm and sunny with a bit of breeze. Eleven of our vehicles turned out with twenty members and at least one hundred people joined the fun. Music was provided by UZBLOKES, John, Pete and Phil. Pinky Agnew read her poem about Thomas and Mik’s gang. Brenda, Liz and Don helped to sell the book and other memorabilia. A great day out with lots to see and do on the Lagoon. Everyone was kept amused.

The rally day from the North Island Easter Rally that never was! This is the long route of approximately 65 miles and 2 hours duration. A relaxed non competitive event run with straight forward instructions. Expect to cover a small section of unsealed road. A full tank of fuel is advised for a very scenic drive around our flat motoring district. The lunch-stop will be at a local country school, where a prepared lunch will be available to all entrants. Toilet facilities will be on-site. This is a chance for the parents and children to raise funds for some new playground equipment. The public of the area will be invited to view the display of our cars, for which parents will charge a gold coin entry. All entrants are encouraged to wear period costume consistent with the age of their car, however this is not compulsory. Let’s make our first proper outing since lockdown fun and pleasurable, without the pressure to compete. Relax and enjoy friends, our cars, and the countryside. Colin Brooks was recently asked to assist with transporting a group of young college students to the Kapiti College Ball held at Southwards Museum. This photo was taken by the family of one of the students. The dapper young fella is Colin’s Great-Nephew! The more mature fella is Colin looking very proud in front of Winifred the Erskine. He had spent the day on a polishing cloth and was happy with the result. It was the first time Winifred had been out for a run for a very long time.
Kapiti Coast Mid Week Run Tour of The Halfway House, Glenside This month Joanna and I organised a tour of the Halfway House in Glenside, north of Johnsonville. This Victorian house was a coach stop from Wellington. It provided overnight accommodation. Two earlier houses, built in the 1840s, occupied the site, and the current house replaced them in 1885. The house is located mid-way (hence the name Halfway) between Wellington and Porirua and horses were changed at the Halfway House following the steep climb out of Wellington. The house was restored between 2012 and 2017.
After an excellent lunch at The Borough in Tawa 36 members toured the Halfway House and gardens. As it is Heritage Week the Halfway House Trust was keen for us to bring our club vehicles. Five cars ranging from 1930 to the 1960s attended and looked very good outside this impressive Victorian house. Also looking good outside the Halfway House was Trevor Barnes’ motorcycle and sidecar.
Claire Bibby, the president of the Glenside Progressive Association, gave an interesting talk on the building and its history. She described how one Wellington VCC stalwart once lived in the Halfway House with his new wife in the 1950s. We toured the main living areas of the house and had afternoon tea in china cups and saucers. We weren’t able to see the whole house as part of it is a private residence for the caretaker and family. Entry was by Koha and we had the opportunity to buy plants and seeds from Claire and her staff. The Halfway House is directly behind Twiglands Gardeners World on Middleton Road Glenside. It’s well worth a visit and is open to the public most weekends.

Our collection of books slowly grows month by month due to the valuable donations from members and others in the community. The value has been proven as during the branch’s visit to Terry Rush’s motor racing collection, Terry made a request for any information on the Levin Race Track. Peter Nightingale commented that we have original race programs. After a search, Pauline and I located those and other books pertaining to the subject. Copies have been made and will be shared. This is a good example of the way our resource can be shared for the benefit of many others.

October has been a strange month, with the National Office looking into the idea of computerising Vintage Car Club Spares across New Zealand. The origins of this idea can be found in the minutes of the National AGM, with its roots running to North Otago. The idea is not impossible, but it’s very close to it! The great advantage of club magazines is the fact you get to read what’s happening in other branches. I read with some interest the comments of Wanganui Chairman Bruce Ardell. He was talking in their latest magazine about the ongoing problem of ‘Scalpers’ and Trademe ‘Bandits’. Unfortunately this is an ongoing problem and is the chief reason Horowhenua Spares sells high value items on Trade me. This is of course if our members show no interest in said items first. Safe travelling everyone.
