What? The Ides of March already? - seems like Christmas was like 5 minutes ago! At Wednesday’s club meeting, Chairman Des St Clare formally retired due to ongoing health issues & Des has handed over the reins to me, so I am now for better or worse your Chairman! Des, I hope you take the opportunity to rest up a bit, given the sheer amount of effort you have given to our club over the last few years. You deserve it and like I said, you are gonna be a hard act to follow. Please note, dear reader, Des is now Deputy Chairman, & still heavily involved in the club executive, as well as keeping a beady eye on me? Just goes to show, we cannot keep a good man down! An extremely busy February, being the main carshow season and all, but finishing with a big let down on heritage W/E. The Lads erected everything on the Saturday, all was ready, only to have to tear it all down on the Sunday! It sure was a sudden lockdown, but everybody set to cheerfully & just plain got stuck in! This is club spirit at its’ best! We took a hit, but we are moving on. th
And we are indeed moving on, to the big event of our year, the SWAP MEET! This is on the 20 , th with set up day on Friday 19 for all you keen volunteers. The Swap Meet this year is under the able command of Rex Williams, so please give Rex all our support! I have shed the club delegate role (after not actually attending a conference—thanks to covid). I can’t do two jobs at once, and Winton Cleal has stepped up for this role, (thanks, Winton). He will be reporting back to the club, so we may get a better feeling on what is happening at executive level? Winton is also expanding his job as club welfare officer, to take over new membership, so any new members get a proper welcome and induction, courtesy of Winton. Further to this, Spark magazine will now feature a “welcome new members page” giving a bit of background, cars owned etc, all typos, mistakes etc blame it on Winton! This is to make the new folks feel welcome. As per request, we had a few cars turn up at the working bee to be photographed by our resident photographer extraordinaire - Bob Barton, so we will soon see the results filling our brag wall! Committee meetings - We hold these on the Wednesday prior to Club Nights, starting at 7.30. Any member is welcome to sit in, to see how your committee run things, so if you have anything to bring up, come along & let us know - it’s your club! Next club night we have Mark Cookson from the department of corrections as speaker, Mark is the director of the Linton Prison. So make sure all them traffic fines are paid up, folks! HOROWHENUA VINTAGE CAR CLUB MINUTES OF GENERAL MEETING, 3 MARCH 2021 HVCC Executive: Special announcements: Des StClare, advised members he relinquished the position of Club Chairman to John White (Deputy Chairman) at the last HVCC Committee meeting, due to health issues. Elected by Committee, John accepted the role and Des was elected to the vacant position of Deputy Chairman. Des thanked the Committee, Club members and Pauline (his wife) for the total support received by everyone over his past three years in office. Des welcomed John to the Chair. Horowhenua VCC Delegate: John White has resigned from the position of Club Delegate due to being elected as Chairman. Winton Cleal was elected by Committee into this role. New Member Caretaker: Winton Cleal, presently HVCC’s Welfare Officer, has been elected by Committee to the responsibility of welcoming new members to the Club, administering of documentation and ensuring introduction and welcome notices are placed in Spark. The entire exercise was performed in such good spirit. Warwick Doreen mentioned an article in DomPost where Wings Over Wairarapa event received $200,000 for loss of income and suggested maybe we could apply for compensation as well. Defribrillator: New battery has still not arrived. John White stated the unit will still work, but the battery has been taken out to preserve the charge. Just a reminder that this is our only major fundraising event of the year and with everyone’s help, Club fees can be kept low, so let’s help Rex by getting behind him and our Club by offering your help. Kitchen: Linda Barton has requested salad items for sandwiches. If you have anything spare from your garden, please deliver between midday and 1.00pm, Friday 19th. An amusing story, though initially did wonder where you were taking us? Meeting concluded with refreshments, 8.30pm.
Brucie’s Burblings Our branch and members have had quite a busy start to the year. We hosted our annual Ted Green Memorial Motorcycle rally where 20 bikes had entered. This was a successful event and thanks need to go to Graeme McKenzie and team for a well run event. We were also represented by 3 cars at the Art Deco rally and dinner. Even though the art deco trust events were cancelled at the last minute the VCC events took place and were enjoyed by all who took their veteran and vintage cars anyway. On the 6th Feb the Waitangi day event was on at Foxton. We had about 10 cars there on display but were a little disappointed by the poor public turnout. Better next year we hope. Sadly the Heritage day on the 28 th had be cancelled because of a change in Covid alert levels. This leads me to reflect on how lucky we are to be able to take part in any events at all. I would like to personally thank Des for the help he has given me as Club Captain over the last 2 years. Coming events. 13th March

British and European car day at Trentham Sunday 14th Feb. Another sunny day down at Trentham, a very good turn out of some excellent vehicles but only half a dozen from our club. John and I took our trusty gazebos down and had them both up and the kettle on within ten minutes. Colin and Cheryl Brooks arrived and brought with them two of our new members, Rob and Alli Law, who arrived in a fantastic 1938 BSA Scout, one of only fourteen in the world and in excellent condition. Thanks for bringing it along, and we hope to see more of it at the clubrooms and on our outings. Bob Barton

Dannevirke Show A good hot sunny day and plenty of vehicles on show, over five hundred fliers given out regarding our Swap Meet in March. Quite a few of our members turned out and also seen at the show were our friends from the Central Manawatu Morris Minor Club. I feel that there were not so many stalls and car boot sales this year, but put it down to Covid ? Bob Barton
2021 Ted Green Memorial Motorcycle Rally 21/02/2021 Another clear and bright day with the temperature in the mid 20’s and a muster of 20 bikes turned out for the event, with a great range of marques. The Horowhenua Branch was represented by five entrants. Unfortunately three entrants were unable to arrive - one through an unexpected work event, and two from mechanical maladies. An easy ride was set, covering 86 miles. This year the rally scoring was set around some challenging questions (6 in all). The half-way point was marked with a very tasty “sausage sizzle” organised and carried out by Bob Barton, and delicious filled rolls, made by Merv Edwards. Top effort! The route itself went north through Koputaroa, to Whirokina, Bainesse and up to Rongotea Road for the halfway point at Thompson’s Motorcycle Museum. If you have not had the chance to visit, this is a wonderful museum with a great range of motorcycles and memorabilia. (Entrance by arrangement only.) The return journey was through Rangiotu , back to SH56 and onwards to Opiki through Poplar Road, to exit on SH57, then on to Shannon, through Buckley Road and a return to Levin Branch clubrooms for a cuppa and prize-giving. Although in general motorcyclists are not of a competitive nature, when it comes to these kinds of competitions, some strong efforts were made, and one entrant (s) completed the event with a 100 percent score! My personal thanks for the assistance in running this event need to go to the following folk. Bob and Linda Barton, Merv Edwards, John White (back-up service), and Callum who had the Spares Dept. open for those who wanted a look around - co-incidentally Callum had just inventoried a range of motorcycle parts! My personal thanks go to the Horowhenua Branch members who entered on the day. Results: Veteran: No Entrants Vintage: Don Macdonald, the solitary entrant on his Norton.

Heritage Open Day Sunday 28 February 2021
After losing our committee chairman Peter Collins on the 31st October 2020, Peter Nightingale and I became joint conveners of this project. Peter has the knowledge of “who has what” in the district and was able to bring in Warren Baillie the blacksmith and Vern Jensen the wheelwright plus the Farm Machinery Club. We have the advantage that several of our club members are also members of F.M.C. While visiting a farm on an unrelated project, Peter spotted a derelict cast iron stove on the scrap heap. The farmer gave the stove to Peter and even helped him to get it home. Research shows it was cast by the foundry of Samuel Barningham in Dunedin. It is their model “New Zealandia” No 6, and features a wet-back to heat water. We had already been loaned a smaller stove, so now we had two. The stoves were restored and the intention was to set up an old-time kitchen and cook scones and pikelets (just like grandma used to). The Muhunoa East Rural Women’s Club were on board to do this, gathered up the kitchen utensils and ingredients and had a very successful practice at Peter’s property, to the tune “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes”. The results were brilliant, and everything was set for a great day out. I would like to mention that Margaret Morgan’s late husband, Johnny and Mary Kilsby’s late husband, Peter Halliday were both active members of our club.
The response for vehicles to put on display from our club members was outstanding, and Manawatu Branch were planning an invasion by way of a club run to support us. It is vital to add that financial support from our club was used for advertising and signage. The theme for the day was “Family and Heritage” and the token entry fee of $2 was set only to recoup costs.
Come the weekend: Saturday was spent with setting up our kit-set garage, which was to house the kitchen, with the blacksmith shop next door. Ivan Horn and Jeff Fox with an army of “worker ants” soon had things in place. It is indicative of club members’ support that we had twenty of us at the morning tea break. Cars and trailers continued to bring in supporting display items, including one of Thomas Crapper’s early model “dunnies”. Peter and Bev Kelly put together a comprehensive display featuring the Levin Motor Racing Circuit (1956 to 1976) and Kerry Geertson and John Dixon mounted the Historic / Heritage display. Linda Fletcher had researched a civilian and military cemetery walk and talk, and was also ready to go. A coffee cart, a food stall, children’s bouncy castle and merry-go-round were all in place. Ian Cooksley was supporting us with some of his historic items, and he was going to man the replica flour mill. Carl Lutz arrived with two of his oldest Fordson tractors (1919 & 1929) after deciding to overnight them on his farm. It was no mean feat getting them out of his display shed and onto the truck driven by his son Max. Consider that his 1919 tractor is 102 years old, and Carl is a sprightly 95 years young. The scene had been set and we were all looking forward to a good night’s sleep before opening the gates at 10 next morning. It was a shock to us all that Covid-19 had struck again, and that the country was at Alert Level 2 from 6 am Sunday. We were left with no option but to cancel the whole event - so near but yet so far. So on Sunday morning we had to dismantle everything, and explain to a number of people who had not heard the Covid announcements that nothing was happening. Spirits were still high(ish) among the good number of helpers, and another big morning tea was enjoyed. Everything was cleared up by 11:30, we locked the gates and spent the afternoon returning loaned items to their owners. Personally, I want to thank our recently retired chairman Des St Clare, chairman John White and secretary Bill Laney for their ongoing support, our branch members who helped in so many ways, and special thanks to all the exhibitors, local and from a distance, who participated in the makings of what would have been a great day out.

Kapiti Club run February 24. On a beautiful summer's day forty Wellington, Horowhenua and Manawatu members met at Gill and Brian Ward's home for the annual BBQ which sets the Kapiti Midweek Run year off. Sixteen brought their club-eligible vehicles which park in a glorious lineup, attracting the neighbours' gaze as well that of the members. Among the older cars was a gleaming red Ferrari with its owner resplendent in Ferrari shirt, shoes and cap! Mike Pattison brought his Lotus Elan Sprint. Kevin Buck has a 'new' 1954 Ford Zodiac in cream and green which was Hal's favourite car in the lineup. (Mine was Rowland Ward's cream E-Type.) We travelled more modestly but at a steady 70kph on the motorway in our 1937 Austin Ruby. Brian displayed his three Jaguars: the SS, the E-Type and XK8 as well as his two veteran Ford Model Ts and several children-sized pedal cars. Meanwhile Gill and Alan Mayo's wife, Deirdre, had their own display, of the most delicious lunch dishes with BBQ performed by son Nick and his friend. A delightful day. Thank you so much Ward family!

Napier Art Deco Weekend Saving the day for the Army Even though the Art Deco Weekend events were cancelled this year both Ruth and I drove up to Napier in our 1936 Wolseley which is painted light green, dark green and black. Needless to say, we were very disappointed that the car parade had also been cancelled, but all day Friday and on Saturday morning we kept hearing that there was still going to be a parade. We had no contact with the Hawkes Bay Vintage car club so were unable to find out anything from their members. Then we went into the Art Deco shop and they gave us a sheet of paper listing what events and activities were still on, and on it was mention of a Charter Parade at 12.30 pm from Emerson Street to the Soundshell! So on Saturday morning we walked down there after parking nearby and found that the street was blocked off and while we were having morning tea two people turned up in an open Model A . Then we saw the army and navy arrive and the Napier community patrol started to man the barriers - sure signs that it was all on. So I went and got the car drove up to the barrier and the kind chap let me in. The parade consisted of the Army marching behind their band with their colours, the Navy, and about 10 cars. About a third of the way through the parade there was a banging on the roof of our car and a chap put his head in the front passenger window and said could we please help him. He needed a ride in the back of the car. He jumped in and I was startled to see a very decorated army officer who introduced himself as Colonel of the regiment and in his words he had just gone off to the little boys’ room and when he came back they had left him behind. So off we set off again to catch up with the parade. The Colonel told us he was retiring and had to give a speech at the soundshell. As we got to the Masonic hotel the cars stopped and our guest was getting concerned that his troops would arrive without him so I advised him to get out and push his way through the crowd and the soundshell would be right there in front of him and he could get there before his troops. And of course the colours of the car were most appropriate. I sure would not want to be the person responsible for leaving the colonel behind but we were most chuffed to have been of service to him, and to have saved the day for the Army. It made our weekend and it was great to have been of service even though strictly speaking we were not meant to be in the parade.

Answer to “What Am I?” 1936 Stainless Steel Ford Tudor In 1935, officials at Allegheny Ludlum Steel Division and the Ford Motor Company collaborated on an experiment that would become a legacy and a tribute to one of the most dynamic metals ever developed. Allegheny Ludlum, a pioneer producer of stainless steel, proposed the idea of creating a stainless steel car to Ford. The idea took shape in the form of a 1936 Deluxe Sedan. That car became the centrepiece of a campaign to expose the public to the new metal and its many uses. This is the 1936 Ford Tudor Sedan built for and owned by Allegheny Ludlum Steel. This is one of only four in existence, and is the only one currently in running and roadworthy condition. The jaw-dropping beauty offered here is one of that tiny production run. The car is in exceptional condition, with the interior and even the frame looking great. All four cars each had over 200,000 miles on them before they removed them from service. These cars were built for Allegheny as promotional and marketing projects. The top salesmen each year were given the honour of being able to drive them for one year. The V-8 engine ran like a sewing machine and was surprisingly smooth and quiet. The dies were ruined by stamping the stainless steel car parts, making these few the last of this model ever produced. The only privately owned example, it won two trophies at the Early V8 Club Auburn 2009 event, first place at the 2009 Hershey AACA event and was nominated for the 2009 AACA Car of the Year. It was recently restored by Lon Kruger, one of the world’s best restorers. The car utilizes the standard 221/85 HP flathead mated to a 3-speed manual and working Columbia overdrive, and has been driven just 18 miles since its restoration.
Motorcycles were the flavour of the month with a beautiful morning greeting the 20 plus entries of this year’s Ted Green Motorcycle Rally. The organisers have already booked the date of the 2022 Ted Green Motorcycle Rally: it’s Sunday the 27th of February. Spares has also been busy with motorcycle parts, two boot loads were delivered to spares the weekend before, this has led to a reworking of the motorcycle area. Full steam ahead now to the Most Important Date of the Year (the 20th of March) Swap Meet Day. Rex tells me he’s still short of Gate Staff at the time of writing, so come on members get in touch, so we can fix this problem before the 20th. Safe Travelling Everyone Callum

Kapiti Coast Mid Week Run Wednesday 31 March Visit to Greg and May Haines Car Collection This month we are going to Greg and May Haines’ vintage and classic car collection. We will visit the collection in two stages with lunch in between: 1) 11am Arrive at Greg and May’s home at 16 Kereru Road, Days Bay to view the cars garaged there. 2) 1.30pm Arrive at 6 Hollands Crescent, Naenae (opposite Bunnings carpark) to view cars garaged at Greg and May’s premises in Naenae. Between these two viewings lunch is booked at The Pavilion at 611b Marine Drive Days Bay from 11.30 am.
