The past month has been extremely busy again with all the car shows and outings. Our club night went extremely well with about 65 members attending, it was extremely pleasing to see Ivan Benge out and about again and looking as spritely as ever. Our two lovely speakers gave a great presentation on their horse trek through the Gobi Desert. It was well done and I am sure that everyone enjoyed it, so many thanks to Stephanie and Kaz and also to Don McLaren for his help in arranging the presentation. The British Car Day at Trentham was another great day which was supported by 6 club cars nicely presented. It was a very hot sunny day and made very enjoyable by John White and Bob Barton who were there early and reserved a good spot for us by bringing their gazebos and erecting them for our shelter. They also had hot water, tea and coffee for every one which was much appreciated. Thanks guys. Supercheap Car Day at Shannon was also a great turn out with 12 club cars and again John and Bob erected their gazebos for us and had tea and coffee for everyone. Again it was a super hot sunny day and it was estimated that there were around 700 cars in attendance. So many that they could not all be accommodated in the domain and several had to be parked out on the street. The Zephyr Zodiac car day in Otaki was another great day with 10 club cars in attendance and similarly it a was hot and sunny one and thanks to Winton who arrived in his Morris 8 with two large gazebos tied to the carrier. We again had plenty of shelter from the wonderful sunny elements. Many thanks to Bill and Lyn Isles for their generous donation of their fantastic 1936 Morris 8 car to the club complete with a trailer load of spares. What a wonderful selfless gesture and to top it off, Lyn turned on a beautiful morning tea with hot sausage rolls and cake. I would like to welcome our new members from the last 2 months, Warren and Denise Baillie, Wells Scadden, Kevin Wilde, Aaron Burns, Chris Winiata and Richard (Rick) Goodman. The gate on the side of the building has been repaired and John White has added a mesh into the library door for ventilation. Derek Ransom has been extremely busy running cables and installing brackets for outside speakers on the Flour Mill in preparation for our swap meet day. Pete Collins is still looking for helpers for this event so if you want to be involved give him a ring. This Saturday’s Working Bee was a friendly but busy event, however a lot was achieved. A special thanks to Bev for her help in arranging the library for the Swap Meet, also to Bernard for bringing his cherry picker along so that Pete could repair and remove the birds nest in the light over the main gate. Of course thanks to all the others who helped around and in the club rooms and spares etc. A great morning was had by all and this is a wonderful social event. See you at the Swap Meet. Cheers.

The April monthly run will be an interesting and well run event with Bruce Lawrie at the wheel organising the day. This will be a competitive run without timed sections and will have concluded within two and a half hours. This will be run rain, hail or snow as the weather won’t affect your attendance. It is suitable for all cars. Have lunch before you attend. Meet 1pm at the Kapiti Freemasons Centre Waikanae. This is above the Olive Grove CafÊ in Marae Lane Waikanae. There is plenty of parking available in the shopping centre carpark. There is a lift available for those not wanting to use the stairs. The run briefing will be held in the Freemasons Centre. First car away approximately 1.15pm. At the conclusion there will be afternoon tea available at the Freemasons Centre. Gold coin donation please? If you wish, you can take part in a guided tour of the Lodge premises. This will be a very pleasant Sunday afternoon.
On club night Winton presents the participants of the Monte Carlo Rally with the Certificates prepared by Wellington branch. The combined sum of points gathered by the Horowhenua members was sufficient to win the Rose Bowl Trophy from Wellington.
Bill and Lyn have donated their much-loved and cared-for 1936 Morris 8 to the Club. What an outstanding and generous gift! The car is pictured on the cover of this edition of Spark, and also features in the For Sale section. They have owned the car for some 30 years, and have motored extensively with the VCC and the Morris Owners Club. They still have their lowlight Morris Minor. Their interests have moved to their motorhome and exploring New Zealand. Bill has been an enormous contributor to the Club, and yet flew quietly under the radar just getting things done without a fuss. Being a member for a long time, his efforts go way back to the establishment of the first Club Rooms, using his plumbing trade skills along with Laurie Jensen to plumb the new rooms. He still regularly attends Club nights. Bill and Lyn have now gifted their prized car to be sold on behalf of the Club. This has to be the most extremely generous, yet kind-hearted way of showing their appreciation to a Club they have gained so much from. This gift will assist the Club to continue into the future for others to benefit. We thank both Bill and Lyn for their extremely kind gesture in thinking of the future well-being of the Club. Your generosity is very much appreciated.

These were for the Monte Carlo run which the Horowhenua branch won. They were presented to Bruce and Raewyn Lawrie, Don McLaren and his navigator and Verdon Heath. SPEAKER: A very good presentation was given by two young women, Stephanie and Kaz who participated in the race on horseback across the Gobi Desert. Meeting closed at 9.10 pm.
Firstly I would like to apologise for not sending my Club Captain’s report to Gibbo in the right format. It was too hard to read so here we go, hope this is better. I have repeated some of that report for your benefit. There is a full report on the Shannon Car Show in this edition of Spark. It was very much appreciated to see that many members turn out for this great event, thanks to you all. NOW THIS IS WHERE YOU NEED TO STAND UP AND HELP YOUR CLUB. It is our SWAP MEET on the 16 March from 6 am to 3 pm. I am only asking for one hour of your time out of 8,760 hours in the year where your help is needed. DO NOT LEAVE IT FOR SOMEONE ELSE TO DO! We need seven more gate Marshals and seven more cooks on the barbeque. That means no one will have to do a double shift. You can choose your time if you get in first. So do not leave it until the last minute get in first. Some members do more than their fair share now. Also I need parking people to help out. I may have to do a phone around so please do not say ‘no!’ Ladies if you can help in the kitchen please phone Linda Barton on 367 8216. by John W Sunday February 10 dawned bright and sunny as Bob Barton and I hopped into the MGB. I pointed it toward Trentham, it became hotter as the day wore on. We were happy we had thought to bring the gazebo. A great display as usual, the Brit car show seems to improve every year. Unlike Wellington’s weather sometimes! About a dozen of our members turned up, we all enjoyed a good lunch and chat in the shade. The Citroen Club took the prize this year and I have to agree. They put on a very good showing. Homeward bound, Bob and I could not believe the gridlock going south. The parking lot stretched from Peka Peka to north of Manakau. Thankfully we were heading north. Hopefully with next year’s show, maybe Transmission gully will be in use?
by Ian Bade The 26th National Vintage Motorcycle Rally was held at Brayshaw Park in Blenheim over the 16th and 17th February. The weather was perfect, Saturday was cool, Sunday was hot. There were 190 bikes that started the runs and included 11 veterans, on both counts the most at a national rally for many years. On Saturday participants had the choice of four routes ranging from easy, medium, long and challenging. The easy route was 80kms and was to be flat. However the route had two short steep climbs. The challenging route was around Port Underwood and included a lot of dust and thick shingle. All routes included a lap of the former Hawkesbury road-race circuit. Sunday was a public display at the Omaka Historical Aviation Park and incorporated field tests. The public display was very well attended by the Blenheim public and some overseas tour groups. Twenty branches were represented by riders, as well there were riders from Holland, Germany, the UK and Australia. The Marlborough branch organising committee did a wonderful job in both organising a well run and well catered weekend.
I was the only Horowhenua participant, but sadly I had to withdraw from the rally with a broken leather belt as I wasn’t carrying spare links. I have had the belt on my LMC bike for 60 years and attended many rallies since 1968 and it has not broken before. I had been forced to ride in top gear by the fact that my low gear (chaindriven) was not engaging. To attack the short steep climbs on the easy route in my top gear (belt driven) I gave the LMC full revs but the aged leather belt snapped under the strain just as I was about to crest the first of the two rises. I had my son as my assistant and back-up at the rally and we both enjoyed the rally although disappointed not to complete the run. The photo was taken by the official photographer of me starting my run. The bike is my 1913 LMC 3.5hp touring model.
It was a beautiful but cool morning when we set off at 8.30am, even at this time there were many classic cars on the road. When we arrived John and Bob were already setting up the gazebos in our usual spot under the trees on the south side. Even at this time there were nearly a hundred or so cars there. The event started at 9.00am but next year we’ll have to be earlier as the Domain was full by 10.30am. About 45 cars had to park outside on the street. During the day about 25 club cars and 1 motor cycle turned up, representing Horowhenua. Someone said there were 700 vehicles there. Maybe just a guess but the place was jammed full. Just about every make and model of car was represented. A lot of clubs were represented with banners etc including us. As the day wore on it got hotter and hotter and our gazebos were most welcome. Club members managed to put swap meet flyers on most vehicles. The organisers also mentioned our swap meet on the loud speakers. By midday a lot of cars were starting to leave but we stayed on to the end.

MID MONTH RUN TO THE KIMBOLTON SCULPTURE FESTIVAL – Saturday 6th April 2019. The Vintage Car Club has again been invited to be part of the Kimbolton Sculpture Festival. This is another opportunity to promote the club and enjoy a few hours out and about being part of the NZ Rural Sculpture Awards while doing so. Like last year, you may choose to bring a picnic lunch but there will be autumn harvest and bar facilities at the festival with food trucks and stalls offering country food and beverage options. The event includes craft market stalls for locally made, baked, grown or bred goods. There will be an opportunity for youngsters to try their hand at creative activities involving arty stuff and challenges. Watch some old fashioned games as local towns battle it out for a top town prize. There will be live music along with vintage machinery displays and demonstrations of heritage skills – blacksmithing, hand shearing, farrowing and woodworking. Meet at 9.45 am in SOUTH STREET Feilding in the parking bays opposite Harrisons Hire Masters and PFS Professional Fleet Services. If you are entering South Street from Aorangi Road this is on the left just past Kawa Kawa Road and Farmlands. PLEASE REGISTER YOUR INTENTION TO ATTEND. To ensure that adequate parking space is put aside in the Kimbolton Domain for us to be able to group our vehicles together and picnic together, (our cars will be on public display by default of us attending) could those intending to attend please let me know by the end of March so that I can advise the organisers of the number of car spaces they need to put aside for us at the Domain. The route this year keeps you on the western side of the ranges and takes participants over approx. 75 miles of sealed roads to a Café for lunch where there is a good range of both hot food and cabinet food at very reasonable prices. The day ends with afternoon tea at another Café. With the combined morning and afternoon sections you will be travelling approx. 105 miles (170 Kms) with no petrol available so if your vehicle might struggle to last just over a hundred miles traversing rolling countryside without a fuel stop you would be best to carry some just in case. Fuel is available at the end of the afternoon section before you head home - which will be another approx. 30 miles (back to Palm Nth). The entry form and further details will be in the April Tourer. Like previous years, the Post Vintage Rally is open to earlier VCC Vehicle Classification Vehicles although these entrants will be participating as non-competitive – and if your vintage is not running on the day just bring your modern.
Look who’s got a new set of wheels….. Anyone know a good club for electric cars, or am I going to have to wait 30 years to be eligible? Bev, you’re not allowed out at night until you know where the spare is and how to change a tyre! Where’s the jack kept?

Every now and then something comes along which restores in you, genuine human values, along with principles and standards. Over the later stages of February the Spares Team came to witness this first hand. Bill Isles came to see me on club night, Bill and his wife Lyn had been talking and had made the decision to donate to Spares their fully restored 1936 Morris 8 Series 1 car. This is to sell for club funds. In addition to this, a trailer load of Morris 8 spare parts. As members will see from the photos this would make the perfect rally car for someone just starting out in the club and that includes the Art Deco Rally in Napier. Our own Secretary and his wife took their Morris 8 up there this year. As for the rest of the month, the working bee went as planned with two trailer loads of late 1930’s Chevrolet parts coming in from Ivan Benge and Mark Gibson. Safe travelling everyone.

A couple of cars I would be pleased to find good homes for. They are a Rover P6B and a Vauxhall HC Viva 1800L. The Rover is all original, very used, the brake calipers are seized but as a matching numbers car and very easy to work on, a good restoration project. The Viva is a factory sleeper it has all of the Magnum mechanicals, going by the chassis tag the first owner ordered it from the factory to look like butter wouldn't melt, it is missing RH rear door glass, has a new radiator. They are both trailer cars for taking away, from storage in Cambridge, both have been dry stored for 15 years or more. I seek car club members who are interested in good bones projects like these, I would be grateful and happy to speak to anyone who enquires. My name is James Godwin.
