July and the cold weather has really set in. The Tararuas are a real picture, capped with the snow to a very low level and the temperature has definitely dropped. Last month we had the Mid Year Christmas dinner which as always was a great success and enjoyed by 50 people. It was a lovely sunny day and I am sure everyone enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere and the wonderful meal prepared by Raewyn’s Catering. A presentation of a framed photo and a certificate of appreciation were awarded to Bill and Lyn Isles for the donation of their Morris 8 car to the club. The monthly club meeting was attended by 65 people and our speaker George Laris gave an interesting talk on the testing stations views regarding the issuing and vinning of older cars. Thanks again to Colin Geange for arranging this speaker. Don McLaren also gave an interesting talk on the Austin 7 Special which he had parked inside the club rooms and this again drew a lot of attention and interest. Brian Peterson who is an ex member was also at the meeting and his friend Jane Laking gave an interesting description on the Auburn replica car that she has for sale. The Saturday morning working bee was well attended with around 30 people there and again it was a very social morning. It was nice to see Bev and Pete back in the library helping to sort out the many books that have been recently donated. The Morris 8 has been sold and now lives just out of Whangarei. I have been told that the new owner has been in contact and is very pleased with it. The Morris has been a real pleasure to have been involved with and it has brought a great club spirit to the fore front, from being a generous donation to involving so many club members together. Not only the Spares department but the many other members who devoted so much time, effort and spirit into getting it ready to sell. They are too many to name individually, but we all know who they are and how they work to make our club such a success. I would like to make special mention of Mark Morgan who gave his mechanical expertise and made his workshop available all free of charge to the club for this project. Also to Wayne Thrower who sold the car on Trademe, Wayne spent much time photographing it, answering questions, phone calls and then arranging transport for the car to Rotorua. Then to top it off he donated the fees charged by Trademe back to the club. From all those involved we can only thank them for their dedication and true club spirit. On 14 July is the Night Owl Rally, hope to see you all then.

Daffodil Rally for Cancer our national day - Sunday August 25, 10 am to 2 pm. This year a change of location to the New World Supermarket Levin, back parking lot. Overspill into Fat Boyz Pub carpark. Bob B and I will be there at 8.30 am to set up. All assistance is appreciated. Bring your car and wear the banners please! This is as much about showcasing our club in our town as helping the Cancer Society. So get that car out of its winter hibernation! If you know friends with a car or another club, bring them along! In a different twist, this year we are all heading back to our clubrooms for a late lunch, so bring your nibbles, we are also going to extend this invite to any other car owners and clubs present. This is so that they may see our club’s hospitality and Callum will have Spares open. Please note: If rained off, it’s the following Sunday folks! See you all there, cheers.

As discussed, I am on the hunt for information about a very early Land Rover Series 1. I believe it was imported to New Zealand around 1949-1950. This Land Rover was purchased by my late grandfather - William Albert Kirkland of Pahiatua, New Zealand. The registration plate appears to be L54 074. He owned two Land Rovers, this and a second which he purchased in about 1956, but I could be wrong about that last date (see attached photo). It is my understanding the early Land Rover may have been part of a shipment that came into NZ in early 1950 through Wellington Motors, where Bill purchased it through. The two people in the photos are my late Grandma - Frances Silvia Kirkland and my late father - Peter William Kirkland. I think this might have been taken summer 1955, as this would have been after my dad’s 13th birthday and see he has a watch on, so picking that might have been is present for his 13th birthday ready for high school. So my best guess is this photo was taken during summer holidays at Akitio Beach in 1955. Any assistance would be very much appreciated. A trailer load of spares has come in from someone in the Foxton area. GENERAL BUSINESS: A visitor (Jane Laking) spoke about her car which she wants to sell. It is a restoration project. The car is a replica 1935 Auburn Speedster. The moulds have been made and the motor comes from a Ford 460 V8 and needs reconditioning. For more information contact Jane on 022 0986738. Don McLaren spoke about Ron and Maureen Finucane’s Austin 7 Special. The car was bought into the club rooms so everyone could see it. SPEAKER: George Laris from VTNZ Levin spoke about how they issue WoF and VIN’s etc. Several members asked him about compliance etc. It was very interesting and informing. He stressed safety is paramount. They also acknowledge a bit of leeway is needed for old cars like brakes etc. Another very interesting speaker. Meeting closed at 9.10 pm

NORTH ISLAND EASTER RALLY UPDATE – To inform Horowhenua Members of progress to date. We are keeping you informed. Hopefully you are all aware by now that the Branch is hosting the North Island Easter Rally from 10th -13th April 2020. We have progressed quite well in the last few weeks with the organisation of this. The Rally Packs will be available from our Club Rooms from 4 pm onwards on Friday 10 th (Good Friday) followed by a BBQ meal also at the Club Rooms. We will require help from Club Members to assist with setting up and clearing away, and some provision of salads, muffins etc. More on that later. The run on Saturday has been set by Mike Khull and Mark Gibson, and looks to be an interesting run with a lunch stop at a local school. Southwards Museum and Theatre has been booked for Saturday evening. Buses will be available for transport from the Club Rooms. There will be time for a look through the Museum on arrival. Dinner will be served in the Auditorium, where the Wurlitzer organ will be played before dinner. BYO drinks, and optional period dress for this. Buses will return to the Club Rooms after the meal. Sunday morning will be a tour around the streets of Levin from 10.30 am. Back to the Club Rooms for a packed lunch by 12.30 pm, followed by a Ghymkana and display of Model “T” Race-a-bouts. Entrant’s cars will also be on display and the general public will be invited to come along for the afternoon. Sunday evening will be the Prize-giving dinner at the RSA in Levin. Once again period dress is an option, but there will be a bar, not BYO. Monday will be morning tea at the Club Rooms from 10 am. A look around parts and the library for those who have not already had a look around.
We are now about to advertise in Beaded Wheels and elsewhere for entrants to register for this event. I am asking as many of our own members as possible to enter for this. In order for it to be a success, both socially and financially, we need as many participants as possible. If you are not able to enter for the Rally, please at least think about helping out in other ways. We will need marshals, help in the kitchen etc. and for the running of the Ghymkana. Please think about it, and contact me if you can help in any way. Our Secretary, Winton Cleal, has already sent notification of the event around all of the Branches. He has had some feedback from a couple of Branches so far. Mark Gibson has basically designed a very nice Rally Plaque which will be included in the entrant’s Rally Packs. We are very fortunate that Mark’s brother is a graphic designer, and has come up with a really great promotional advertisement for the Rally based on a photo Mark took a couple of years ago in our Club grounds, of Bernard Scott’s wife Lisa, their daughter, and Ivan Horn’s granddaughter riding in their Model “T” Racea-bout. This will be in Beaded Wheels in the near future, once we get it approved for publication. We are very grateful for the help we have received from Mark and his talented brother, and also for the expertise from the Tribe Company of Wellington who will be manufacturing the Rally Plaque in due course. I hope all of this makes sense! Trust me, it is all coming together! Those of you who were there at Club Night would have had the opportunity to see draft copies of the Plaque and the advertisement. I look forward to hearing from any of you who are willing to help for this event. It is a big undertaking for our Club and we want to showcase Levin and the surrounding areas to the rest of the country. This is the Draft Rally Plaque approved by your rally committee. Similarly this requires approval from VCC Head Office and this is currently under way.
This Wolseley 14/56 is thought to have been registered new in Nelson. A subsequent owner recalls about 50 years ago seeing this car parked up in a paddock in Stoke, in a sad state of repair. Restoration of the chassis, running gear and engine was completed by a Nelson man who unfortunately died before completing the restoration. The car was sold and taken to Invercargill by the new owner. About 1998, Nelson man, Bryan Stansbury saw the Wolseley advertised for sale and went to Invercargill to view the car. He recognised the car as the Wolseley 14/56 he had seen in Stoke as a boy. Bryan Stansbury purchased the car and had the Wolseley transported back to Nelson. Bryan refurbished the vehicle and re-registered the Wolseley. The new registration number was TF2727. Bryan drove the car in a Wolseley Club rally from Nelson to Palmerston North and to a British Link Rally to Christchurch. He used the car as daily transport until one day on the drive to work, the motor seized. Bryan parked the car up for a year before selling it to
Russell Nimmo from Greymouth. Russell Nimmo paid for the Wolseley, but did not get around to collecting the car. Russell Nimmo already owned another Wolseley 14/56 that was in a sad state, possibly Registration No AO9983. He intended to make one good car out of the two. Interestingly the Wolseley already owned by Russell Nimmo was the Wolseley 14/56 featuring in the movie Bad Blood, a New Zealand feature film on the Stanley Graham manhunt in 1943. A member of the Wellington VCC purchased both vehicles from Russell Nimmo via Trademe. He travelled south to Greymouth to collect the Greymouth car, which by now had been reduced to a chassis, body shell and boxes of parts. He trailered these parts home to Wellington via Nelson, and collected TF2727 where it was still in storage. Winton Cleal, a Wellington VCC and Wolseley Car Club member purchased the Wolseley and parts from him. Winton re-commenced restoration work. He stripped all the paint off the car and sealed the bare metal in sealer. To get it perfect he had the doors, mudguards and all bare metal including the body bead blasted and primed, the guards and doors refurbished and much of the upholstery and chrome plating was then completed. He also cleaned up the chassis and running gear. Part of the bulk head was made by Winton as were the sills. The rear of the car was beyond repair so Winton cut it off and had the back of the other car re-welded onto it. The person doing this work became too busy and only did half of the work. The car was not finished and was left in storage. It was decided after a period of time to sell it. The car was sold to Mike Driscoll of Wellington. After purchasing the car from Winton in 2011 he concentrated first on the body work. The English oak wooden frame was in remarkably sound condition and with the benefit of Epiglue was reused. The engine rebuild was completed by B and H Engine Services, Palmerston North. New white metal bearings and rings were installed. The pistons, bores and cylinder head were in perfect condition and required minimal work. Parts for the twin “downdraft� SU carburettors were sourced from Swift Automotive, Christchurch. A replacement carburettor body was supplied by the Wolseley Car Club. The brakes, gearbox, diff and front axle required minimal work, having earlier been rebuilt. The original cork wet clutch has been retained and only required the replacement of a few damaged corks. The starter and generator were overhauled and the car rewired. The original trafficator turn signals have been retained. Items such as dash and gauges, lights and trim were in sound condition. The few missing or damaged items such as park-light and fog light lenses and surrounds were sourced at Horopito Wreckers.
The body work has been painted at home in the original “tricolour” Black/Olive Green/Khaki Green colour scheme, complementing the green upholstery and in keeping with the car’s Art Deco origins. Mike came to us on Swap Meet 2019 day and asked if we wanted buy back our old car. We got the car back home in April 2019. We transferred the number plate MYRTYL to it. This plate had been bought for this car but was never put on it. Proud new/old owners

Another fabulous meal was enjoyed by members on 16 June. Raewyn’s Caterers prepared an excellent spread in their quality style we’ve seen many times before. Great value. The enjoyment could be gauged by the ‘Din’ created with all enjoying the occasion. At the commencement, Chairman Des St Clare stood before those gathered and presented Bill and Lyn Isles with a Certificate of Appreciation and framed photo of the 1936 Morris 8 taken outside the clubrooms. This is to mark the very generous donation of the vehicle to the club. In reply Bill outlined how very grateful they had been for the club and its many good times. This was a gift back to the club for what they had received over many good years.

MID YEAR DINNER On 16 June the Mid-Year Dinner was held in the club rooms. The catering as usual was done by Raewyns. 51 people registered and prepaid. Members started gathering at midday for the meal at 1pm. Before the meal Bill and Lyn Isles were thanked for their donation of the Morris 8 to the club and presented with a framed photograph. Bruce Scott said Grace before the meal which was up to its usual high standard. I would like to thank the volunteers who set up on Saturday and those who helped clean up afterwards on Sunday.

The Southland Branch newsletter 'Rumour' published an article on a bike that I used to own that now resides in the Motorcycle Mecca Museum in Invercargill. The article is part of a series by the Southland Branch where it writes up the history of a selected bike in the museum each month. The black and white photo was obtained from a rescued part of a film made from the North Island Motorcycle Rally held in Masterton in February 1970. The film has deteriorated badly, but the Wellington Branch has obtained a digitised version of what could be recovered and included a small part of me with the bike. The other photo was taken in Motorcycle Mecca on 15th March 2019. Both the bike and I have had restorations in the intervening time between photos - which one do you think has the better restoration?

Known History of 1912 Bradbury Frame No 39294 Purchased in 1968 by Ian Bade, then of Tawa and a member of the Wellington Branch of the NZVCC, from Don Laing of Masterton. It was purchased as a complete motorbike although as a box of parts. It proved to be almost 100%. Ian and Keith Bade (Ian's brother) assembled the bike. It was their first attempt at putting together a veteran bike, although Ian did and still does have a 1913 LMC. Keith's recollection is that it was like doing a jigsaw puzzle without a picture. Having got the bike assembled attempts were made to start it - no go. The magneto was tested and had a good spark, but when put on the bike, no spark. It took a while to work out that testing the magneto was clockwise, while on the bike, it ran anticlockwise. A working anticlockwise magneto was obtained and installed and the motor ran. After some effort and running the bike up and down the local back road in Tawa, the bike was registered (Reg Number 334OZ) and obtained a Warrant of Fitness early in 1970. Keith rode the bike in the VCCNZ North Island Rally in Masterton, February 1970 and the 2nd National Motorcycle Rally in Whanganui, February 1971. The bike did not finish in either rally as after about 30 - 40 minutes of continuous running the motor seized up. Unfortunately, we do not have any photos of the bike being ridden, but efforts are in place to obtain photos from a film that was made of the 1970 rally. After pulling the engine apart and considerable checking, it was found the con rod was very slightly bent and with cast iron piston and cylinder, seizure was inevitable. Much effort was made to have the con rod straightened. Only one place said they could handle it, but when they saw the age, decided they wouldn't risk working on the con rod. The photos of the bike taken in 1974 show the bike basically as it was initially reassembled and ridden in the rallies, but with a little restoration started. The restoration went on intermittently until 1983 when it was swapped for some LMC parts with Lindsay Williams of Totara Park, Upper Hutt. Ian has always had a greater interest in and has specialised in LMC motorbikes. There is a photo of the bike undergoing restoration by Lindsay Williams post 1983. It is understood that Lindsay Williams sold the bike to Auckland, where restoration was finished and the chair was added. It is also understood the executors of the Auckland owner put the bike and chair up for Auction with Webbs and it was sold to the Motorcycle Museum in Nelson.
Ian believes the current red pin striping should be green and yellow. Bradbury started out as a sewing machine manufacturer in the 1850’s in Oldham UK, but ceased production in 1924 and was dissolved in 1929. Apparently there are still businesses in the Oldham area using the Bradbury name and a member of the Horowhenua Branch used to work for one of them before emigrating to NZ.

I would like to start this Spares Report with a “Big Thank You” to everyone who played a part in the selling of the 1936 Morris 8. With some sadness we waved goodbye to an old friend on Monday 24th of June at 7am, as it started its journey north to the warmer climes just outside Whangarei. With only half an hour’s warning from Wayne that the transport truck was waiting, Spares managed to get there without Wayne upsetting too many club members wives with early morning phone calls. Over the course of the rest of the month Spares has taken delivery of a trailer load of top quality spares from one of our long term members, this should lead to some serious interest on club night.
