Well, the first chat for the New Year! Let’s hope Mr Covid19 gives us an easier 2021! Good to see all your smiling faces at last Wednesday meeting and a special welcome to our prospective new member Ashley McCausland. Mark Gibson, our hard working and long time Spark Editor is hanging up his pen. Well done Mark! A big thank you for your efforts! Our new Editor is Bruce Jamieson, who either volunteered or was press-ganged into it? Bruce’s Email address is in Spark, so please support Bruce by sending him interesting articles to print! Mark informs me he will be in the background assisting where needed. At the time of writing, our Chairman Des St Clare is out of hospital and home under the tough love care of Pauline. He has a prescription of taking it easy and slowing him down! Good luck with that, Pauline! January happenings were a super-spring clean of our clubrooms, organised by Jackie Job. Thanks to all who gave of their elbow-grease! We do need to take care of our ‘home’ as it’s our biggest asset. I look forward to the January super-working bee being an annual event. Also January was the AP&I Show, with a parade of cars this year. Many thanks to those who supplied cars for the static display and those who manned the display over the weekend. January 31 brought a trip to the Dannevirke Wheels with Attitude Car Show and Swap Meet. Bob Barton and company put out hundreds of flyers advertising our own and better, March Swap Meet. It was good to see our club members over there showing the flag! February is shaping up to be extra busy for us, with the Foxton Teddy Bear Picnic on Waitangi day and British Car Day at Trentham on 14 February. The annual Ted Green Motorcycle Rally on 21 February and our newest effort, the Heritage Day is on 28 February. Volunteers are required for set up on 27 February please. Planning is well underway for this event, Peter and Tom assure me it will be a winner! So give it all our support! Note the annual Shannon Car Show is scrubbed for this year, they think it may be okay for ’22? Maybe just as well, we are fairly committed this month! Also well in hand, Rex Williams has our club ‘biggie’ our great SWAP MEET! Give Rex all your support on this one please? It is our big yearly earner and really is an ‘all hands on deck’ day, so if you have not yet put your hand up, go see Rex. Carrying on Des’s request, photograph your car and provide a print to our trusty librarians, Don and Pauline. We can place it on our brag wall. We will be looking for them! A call for help from the top table, we need speakers! We hope to have a good speaker every 2 months, so come on, everybody knows someone interesting! Please phone me when you have ‘volunteered’ one! It is with sadness we acknowledge the passing of member Jocelyn Scott’s brother in Australia. Our sympathies to Jocelyn and all the Scott family.
______________________________________ _________________ Enthusiasm for this new event continues to grow at a fast pace. Cars and motorcycles for the display avenue have been confirmed. If you wish to bring your favourite vehicle, please do so. These will be given a separate area. The working displays and several static displays are all confirmed and ready to go. The heritage kitchen will be something else. From a tiny idea an impressive display is planned with the Muhunoa East Country Women going all out with pikelets, scones, tea and coffee etc. Inside displays are being worked on and there will be a few surprises as well at the Levin Motor Racing Circuit display. Don't forget the tractors, fire engines, Model T Racers and the authentic looking Gipsy wagon. We also have the Ukulele Ladies to entertain and the cemetery walk/talk sessions. Something for everyone - visual; audio; moving and static! Yes, we do require help on Saturday and Sunday! Any time you can give is greatly appreciated. HOROWHENUA VINTAGE CAR CLUB MINUTES OF GENERAL MEETING, 3 FEBRUARY 2021 In the absence of Club President, Des St Clare, Deputy Chairman John White opened the first meeting for 2021 at 7.30pm with a welcome to new and current members, along with visitors. Denise Liddle read a message from Des St Clare regarding the condition of his health. A “Get Well” card was circulated for all members to sign and for delivery to Des at his home by Bruce Lawrie. New members: Welcome. Visitor: Ashley McCausland, friend of Linda Gill who is considering becoming a member. He needs volunteers for BBQ, gate and parking attendants, raffles. PLEASE …. Just an hour of your time on this day would be greatly appreciated. Rex is waiting to hear from you!! The Swap Meet is our major source of income for the year and the income generated helps to keep our Club subscriptions one of the lowest in the country. For the kitchen, could we also have members provide cakes and savouries to be sold to the public. Members will be serving tea, coffee, sandwiches and cakes to also generate income. Thanks to Bob Barton and John White for placing Swap Meet flyers on all cars at Dannevirke’s “Cars with Attitude”. Awareness of our event is important, so please spread the word to others. Heritage Day, 28 February: (Tom Hayes and Peter Nightingale) Tom and Peter brought us up-to-date with activities for Heritage Day. All going to plan. Flyers to be distributed throughout the community. A list of members was read to confirm who was prepared to display their car/s (over the decades) on this day. With thanks to all. In the interest of HVCC and its involvement with this event, volunteers are required from the Club to man the gate at the Clubrooms, Tiro Tiro Road entrance to collect $2 pp entry fee. Brucie’s Burblings Welcome to another year of car club events. My hope is that everyone had an enjoyable break and Christmas celebration. We had a good turn out to the Christmas Dinner, thanks to those members who took on the responsibility of organising that event. Our year has started with a hiss, bang and a roar. The Shannon Christmas Parade was well attended. New Year’s Day saw a brilliant run from the Manawatu Branch followed by a picnic lunch at Mt Lees Reserve. Some of us represented the branch in the Wellington Branch Monte Carlo. We did not manage to win the trophy this time, maybe next year. However we managed to come second overall. The Wanganui Branch Burma Rally was run on the Sunday of Wellington Anniversary weekend. We had six entries. Verdon and Viv, Don and Julie were placed second in their classes and yours truly won best dressed man (Don won that prize last year). That same weekend six members displayed their cars at the Levin AP&I Show, and eight more took part in the Grand Parade. We also had a spring/summer spring-clean at the clubrooms – thanks to Jackie for organising that working bee. Coming Events: February 6

The Avenue of Trees

Here is a photo of the Christmas tree in the Avenue of Trees event. Pauline and I have decorated it. This year we have also added a few Spark and Beaded Wheels Magazines in the hope we entice a few new members. From my experience of talking to potential new members in the past they have the impression that they need to own a vintage car before they can join. I generally let them know that the car usually comes later. They are even more surprised when I tell them that it doesn't have to be a vintage car and that it could be a classic or even a motorcycle or scooter, or even agricultural! Some even think that they too have to be vintage to join our club! Lol! I am not sure how we can disperse this myth and entice new blood to help us out with our future ventures so l would just like to put it out there and see if members could come up with some ideas. One idea could be a couple of well written adds in a couple of the local papers or even in the 'What's on in Horowhenua' page that I think comes out once a month. Just putting it out there!

George McLean presented these at the club rooms on January's working bee. They are two superb ceramic model vintage cars from the Jim Beam Collection Series that were sold to collectors principally in the USA. These stunning examples were donated to the club by Mr Chris Underwood of Evans Bay, Wellington. He inherited them along with a Series 1 Landrover from his Brother-in-law. Now they’re displayed on the top of our trophy cabinet and it is claimed they are still full of the amber nectar! And the Landrover is nearly restored! The club would like to thank Mr Underwood for his very kind gift. Have a look at them the next time you are in the club rooms, one is a Model J Duesenberg Limousine ACD Museum Edition and the other is a Model A Ford Phaeton, both in excellent condition.

A good turnout at the AP&I show grounds, our club put six cars on show and eight on parade in the afternoon. Plenty of people attended the show and quite a few asked about the club and the vehicles that were on display. We handed out lots of old Beaded Wheels magazines and quite a few joining packs too.
The members who spent two days inside the AP&I building looking after our vehicles and talking to the public were, George McLean with his Ford Model Y, Rex Williams and his Sunbeam Alpine, Don McAlpine with his Armstrong Siddeley, Warwick Doreen and his huge Chrysler 80, our Chairman Des and his personal secretary Pauline, with their lovely Morris 8. Finally, there was me and the trusty old Austin Farina, a great weekend with lovely people, what a great team!

in by Michael Wintringham We hear a lot of accusations about “fake news” these days, but this is certainly not a new phenomenon. The photo below was first published in a news report over 100 years ago in Marlborough, has been reproduced several times since, and a copy may still hang in the VCC Marlborough Branch clubrooms. The most recent reproduction of the image was in “Click – A Moment in Time” published by the Marlborough Historical Society, where the photograph is titled: Blenheim motoring pioneers all set to embark on the first journey to the West Coast. The full caption continues: The venture is certainly about to test the ‘mechanicalness’ of both men and machine, Their expedition in 1910 involves the first ever drive over Tophouse Saddle through to Westland. Sitting in their open Alldays and Onion these two enthusiasts are well rugged up in greatcoats, gloves and sporty goggles. They have a spare can of petrol on the running board in front of a beefy handbrake while other supplies, in a sack, are roped in at the back. These two gents, H. J. S. ”Bert” Mitchell and Ivan Wintringham, jointly own a motoring garage and machine shop in Herbert Street. This largely repeats the story which accompanied the first publication of the photograph and is obviously nonsense. Mitchell and Wintringham certainly made the pioneering trip in 1910 but the photograph was taken after the completion of the expedition and their return to Blenheim. The mud-stained car has been stripped of all the supplies required for the venture: cans of petrol and oil; ropes; spare wheels, tyres and tubes; jacks; food and water; tarpaulins (for covering the car and drivers during emergency repairs under downpours). Even the sack on the back of the car
looks empty. And Ivan Wintringham is wearing business attire, wholly unsuitable for such an expedition, even in Edwardian days. The splendidly named Ivanhoe (Ivan) Charles Kimberly Wintringham was my grandfather and I recall my late father saying: “Dad was hauled out of the firm’s office to pose for the photograph. He wasn’t very happy about it as he had work to do, but Bert persuaded him it would be good publicity for the business. He managed to find a coat to cover his suit. He said to me, with a slight grin, that the reason why Bert was smiling and he wasn’t was that Bert had driven most of the rugged parts of the trip – the bullock trails and stream beds – while he (Ivan) had been outside at the back pushing.” Previous captions also state that the purpose of the expedition was to open the Tophouse route between Blenheim and Nelson, rather than reach Westland. However, having reached the road which is now SH6, the way was open North to Nelson or South to the West Coast. Ivan Wintringham continued in the motor trade in Blenheim until illhealth forced his retirement. He died in 1954 in Palmerston North. Bert Mitchell became prominent in local body politics, serving a term as Mayor of Blenheim from 1950.

Wairarapa VCC’s
annual “Stretched Gymkhana” Saturday February 20th 2021
Building on the success of the last 3 year’s events (and originally inspired by some of the “offtarmac” events reported on in the Beaded Wheels), on Saturday February 20th 2021the Wairarapa Branch is holding their fourth Stretched Gymkhana. We have invited members from all the lower North Island VCC branches to enter this event. Do you like the excitement of gymkhana style driving, on grass? Would you enjoy the challenge of trying to navigate at a constant speed, through a winding course, against the clock? o The course will be sufficiently challenging to ensure unsafe speeds cannot be obtained – this isn’t a “Speed Event”. Can you meet the challenge of driving a course consistently, so as to maintain, as far as possible, the same time each lap? If you answer YES to all of these, then the Stretched Gymkhana is an event not to be missed. Event outline: Driver’s briefing will be at 8:45am, with the event expected to finish mid/late afternoon (BYO lunch / bbq sausages and bread will be available). The course will be around a ½ mile in length o The course will be on grass, a bit like a classic gymkhana’s cones course, there will be lots of sharp turns, to ensure that excessive speeds (i.e. greater than the speed limit) cannot be obtained All drivers will have 3 (or more) timed runs over the course, after which the best time for each driver will be calculated (this becomes their individual target time). From then on drivers have to try and match their target time, with 1/2 the field dropping out each time, until a winner is found o For example, if there were 16 drivers, once each driver’s target time has been determined (from the practice runs), all 16 drivers have another run. Then the 8 drivers whose time was closest to their target time would move into the next round. These 8 drivers would have another run, and the 4 whose time was closest to their target time would have another run etc. Notes:
This event is not a “Speed Event”. It falls under section 20 of the Branch Manual, as a driving test. The event is limited to 32 combinations (driver + vehicle), so please register early to ensure you don’t miss out The event is reliant on ground conditions being suitable. The organiser may cancel the event at late notice if necessary, as dictated by the weather. Happy New Year everyone! There's not much to report from over the December and January period, so I will concentrate on some events coming up. They’re not HVCC related. The Kapiti Zephyr Zodiac Car Club Annual Car Show is on 7th March from 9am to 2pm. It is to be held at the Otaki Racecourse, last year's event was a fun day for the Horowhenua members who went. Southward Car Museum and Webb’s (The Auction House) are coming together with the aim of having an auction at Southwards on 21st March. Of interest Spares will be open from 10am on the Heritage Day (28 February) Safe travels everyone.

Kapiti Coast Mid Week Run (Last Wednesday of the Month)
Wednesday 24th February Visit to Gill and Brian Ward’s home at 12 midday 73 Rosetta Rd, Raumati South (aka 73 Hydes Rd) Gill and Brian have again kindly offered to host our summer barbeque lunch at their home. Members attending are encouraged to bring their club-eligible vehicles to add to the display of Brian's interesting cars and memorabilia. All lunch food will be provided but please bring a donation of $10.00 per person to contribute to the cost. Please also bring your favourite tipple. Directions: From the south, take the first expressway exit then left at the roundabout to Raumati South on to Poplar Avenue. At the end of Poplar Avenue, right into Rosetta Rd. Left into Hydes Rd, opposite Tiromoana Rd. From the north, take the old SH1 to turn right on to Raumati Rd by the Chocolate Factory. At the end of the road, turn left into Rosetta Rd. Drive down Rosetta and when you pass the Rosetta cafe on your right look for Hydes Rd on your right opposite Tiromoana Rd. Parking: If you bring your club vehicle, please park on the driveway which leads into the garage. If you’re in your modern, there should be ample parking in front of the house but if this is not available (due to wet weather) there is plenty more parking in Hydes Road.
