Welcome back to you all and to my first Chairman’s Chat for 2020. Hopefully, you are all rested and well after the Christmas break and you have your new year's resolutions well in hand and under control. 2019 ended with our Christmas dinner which was well attended and as always very enjoyable. Many thanks go to John Forster for his delightful soothing Christmas music. After the meal, we were well entertained by our very own Father Christmas who seemed delighted to have individuals sitting on his knee, he was certainly entertaining. Bryan Wells won the Best Restoration with his magnificently restored Ford V8 Jail Bar pickup truck. Again Raewyn’s Catering treated us all to a splendid meal. The weather was near perfect and all in all, it was a great day. The first club meeting for the year was very well attended with over 90 people present and 18 of these were visitors from the Manawatu Branch. It was a very entertaining night highlighted with an exhibition from Don McLaren, Julie, Verdon Heath, and Viv who demonstrated the period costumes they wore while competing in the Monte Carlo Rally. They won even though they were one car short! The evening finished with a sausage sizzle supper and a very enjoyable chat amongst ourselves. I would like to extend a huge thanks to Pete Collins and Rex Williams for the wonderful job they did in preparing, cooking, serving and even organising the purchases and the cleaning up after the supper. I am sure that the whole club really appreciates their time and effort put into this event. The following day was Waitangi Day. It was celebrated by club members who travelled to Foxton to display their cars and enjoy the Teddy Bears Picnic in the park. There were 19 of our club cars on display and another enjoyable day under the sun was enjoyed by all. As most of you already know Winton Cleal has resigned as the secretary. This decision was forced due to ill health. I thank Winton for all the time and effort that he has given to the club and me and wish him all the best for the future and hope that he has a speedy recovery. Glenn and Stephanie Peach are taking on the role of secretary in a joint effort. On behalf of the club I thank and welcome them onto our committee. The Easter Rally is well on its way to being finalised and promises to be a great success so if you haven't presented your entry please do so as quickly as possible. All enquires can be addressed to Colin Brooks. Our next club meeting is on Wednesday 4 March. John White has arranged a speaker and he will be talking about and demonstrating electric cars. Some members will be allowed to drive these vehicles around the grounds. To permit time for this and keep within the hours of daylight, we will be starting the meeting at 7 pm. Swap Meet Flyer

Brucie’s Burblings I would like to wish everyone a happy and prosperous New Year. What a hectic start it has been. A big thank you to the 67 members that responded to the online survey that we conducted during December. There will be some small changes to the programme during the year with a move away from competitive rallies to more shed and museum visits. Thanks to those members that attended the Foxton Bridge opening and especially the Levin Christmas Parade, what a lot of fun and a real festive experience. On the Sunday following we again had a Christmas lunch in the clubrooms and the awarding of the Best Restoration Trophy to Brian Wells with his 1947 Ford Jailbar pickup. Thanks to those that supported the Branch at the AP&I Show both in the static display and the parade. The same weekend Horowhenua branch was represented by 3 vehicles in the Wanganui Branch Burma Rally and also the Wellington Branch Monte Carlo run to Wanganui. Our crew of Verdon and Viv, Don and Julie, Bruce and Raewynn for the second year in a row won the inter branch challenge, highest combined score any 3 cars and also won the Wellington Branch Club Captains Trophy (highest single score) for the second time. There were some questions as to how a 1937 Chrysler could do that. I must note that Julie won the Best Dressed Lady award at the Burma Rally prize giving dinner. 15 December Linda Gill was awarded with Best Ladies Costume in the Post War section. Well done. Brian Wells was presented with the Restoration of the Year Trophy for his 1946 Ford Jailbar pickup he has owned for 50 years. Bought off the company he worked for, he used it as an everyday vehicle during the ‘70’s. About 15 years ago he began the restoration. The engine remains untouched. No, no Santa! That’s not on! Next you’ll get a thick ear!

I received a call from Pauline asking if I would like to help with a Christmas Tree that we had been asked to set up and display in the Salvation Army. It was for their annual fundraiser as they were presenting their “Avenue of Trees” display. This involved various local businesses, charity groups and clubs in and around the Levin area and we had been asked if we would like to participate. I agreed! Pauline said she would let me know what she would like me to do when she and Don had sorted something out. I then forgot about the fact until one day I saw someone struggling to get through my very heavy wooden gates. “Who’s this I thought, looks a bit like Father Christmas!” and I was right! I went to his rescue and helped with the gates. In each of his hands he had these very long tubes of something. “Strange I thought.” Then I realised that they were tubes of Christmas globes. “Do you think you can have a go at painting some vintage cars on these in like silhouette form for our special tree? I said I would give it a go and took the tubes and bid him farewell. Looking closer at the globes I noticed they were round and thought that will be hard to get the right perspective on round globes so I set out to see if I could find some square ones instead and although there were 20 in all I didn’t think there were enough for a large tree and came up with a few other ideas whilst out and about. By using gold bun stands I used our spark plug logo, our blue Mustang logo and various other vintage and classic car photos and glued them onto the Bun stands, put some thread through and we hung them to the tree. Eventually I figured out how to paint the silhouettes onto the globes by using my paint pens and they turned out okay. Pauline had the idea of raiding the spares for metal car logos threading wire through them and attaching them to the tree that way. They were quite
impressive, she also made large Christmas presents from empty boxes covered in Christmas paper and then also covered in many photos of vintage and classic cars and placed them under the tree like gifts. We finished it off with blue tinsel and a couple of Spark mags at the bottom of the tree as advertising. Then came the important part; the Christmas Angel at the top of the tree! This was specially hand carved by Don from hard wood in the form of the winged lady from the Rolls Royce Silver Ghost. She looked splendid! We were then asked by a couple of interested persons, a younger single lady in particular if we had any flyers as she was interested in joining so we advised her to take a photo of a couple of contacts in the Spark mag and also of our up and coming “Swap Meet” that she said she would attend. We thought it was a shame that we didn’t have any flyers to hand out in these situations to encourage new members to join.

26 January was overcast and drizzly in Levin. A handful of members headed off to the swap meet and car show at Dannevirke. Once over the Pahiatua Track, it turned out sunny and very hot on the eastern side. The show was well attended with a lot of great cars on show, not a lot of swap meet stands, however Bob B managed to obtain a Model T coil box. There seemed to be an increased number of cars for sale this time. Don McIntyre was there with his Valiant Ranger and had a windscreen information sheet giving the original purchase price of $4200. One bloke pulled out his cheque book to buy it at that price! Don quickly removed the price! Winton managed to nurse his older Wolseley over and back with a leaky water pump. He used more water than petrol! Rex Williams lost his windscreen on his Rapier at the first set of road works leaving the show. He had a draughty trip back with a cab full of glass! I understand he managed to get a second hand one out of Wellington. That’s it folks, next car show is the British car day at Trentham, see you there!

Many Horowhenua members were surprised to see a Horowhenua branch car competing in the Hamilton area and pictured on page 5 of Beaded Wheels! Barry has supplied the following account of the adventure to Kairangi. A recommended event! Ali and I, plus the trusty Rambler headed to this event from home at 5am on a pleasant Saturday morning. We arrived for scrutineering at 11am at KW Auto in Cambridge. The trip up was easy and little traffic to bother us. Passed scrutineering without a problem, had a bit of a natter and did the normal paperwork required; everything was in order. We were the second car through and as we left the workshop we noticed a lot of cars arriving, some really interesting cars and some very rare too. We had a nice lunch in Cambridge and went onto our Motel at Te Awamutu. It rained all night and was still light rain in the morning. Driver’s briefing was at 8.30am at the Roto-o-Rangi Community Hall, so we ventured out there, some beautiful scenery shrouded in a low mist. On arrival we were told the start time maybe delayed while we waited for the road to dry out. This is not a good thought as we haven’t seen the road yet and being a narrow country road we thought the Rambler would be a handful on a damp road. As it turned out the locals knew best and after the briefing we eventually got to do a recce of the road following the Chief Marshals 4x4. It is a great stretch of road, 2.1kms long with everything; uphill start, longish straight with a decent dipper in the middle (70 mph) then a fastish lefthander with a lot of off camber, what I called a hairy corner,
then a 90 degree right which is where the picture in Beaded Wheels was taken. I wouldn’t have stood where the photographer did, but I do appreciate the quality picture. Onward to some tight corners and to a slightly hair raising (If I had any) finish. This was the end of the road. I completed 4 timed runs and came out in 5th place overall out of 16 entrants. I was happy with that! There were actually 5 timed runs but Ali and I decided we would finish after 4pm and head home to be back at work on Monday morning. At least in some sort of decent shape. However at the Rangipo turn off on State Highway 1 the Rambler broke the lower alternator bracket and blew a hole in the inlet manifold. This was all temporarily repaired on the side of the road and we quietly drove all the way home without any more problems. We both recommend to club members, that if you want a good easy event to do and a weekend away, in great company, to have a go. Oops I forgot to mention that this event is a timed event and the aim is to be consistent with your time and the winner is the person whose times over the 5 runs are the most consistent. We have also been lucky to be invited back again and been offered accommodation by Waikato members. Thanks to WVCC for having us, long may the event continue!

I always thought English cars were built to go around corners slowly and American cars to go fast in straight lines!
As a teenager, I had a 1938 Ford 10 which always boiled going over the Remutakas, this side! Half way up there was a dribble of water coming down the hillside. Everyone parked near it after driving across to the opposite side of the road so they could top up radiators and containers. They knew the motor would boil again at the top! Coming up the other side wasn’t too bad as the incline is more gradual, plus there’s usually a headwind to help with cooling. Only time the 10 didn’t boil was in the middle of winter! Now I’m in the process of restoring a 1937 Ford Model Y. I bought the car because I don’t like it! Why, did I buy a Y, with even less horses? It was bought solely because it was the first car I drove! In 1944 at 2 years of age I was allowed to drive it. I could drive all round New Zealand and back in five minutes. But I can’t do that now for some reason! I think the secret was being able to stand up on the seat ‘driving’ at that age, I guess?
The motor has just been reconditioned. I’ve finished doing up the gearbox a while ago and now it’s installed. I’ve fitted indicators to it now and used LED’s in the dash instruments for better illumination. There’s lots of work to do on the body. It’s been off the road up on blocks in a lean to for 15 years. There is quite a bit of surface rust here and there as a result. Remarkably it’s quite sound for 83 years of age.
Kapiti Coast Mid Week Run Thirty four VCC members from Wellington, Horowhenua and Manawatu branches gathered at the Winemaker’s Daughter restaurant for Christmas lunch. The weather was brilliant and tables had been set up for us under a glorious pink bougainvillea and a clematis. After tasty nibbles had circulated we all sat down for roast pork, chicken, ham, fish pie and vegetables followed by a selection of desserts. Good company, lots of chatter, a lovely setting and a great menu; what more could one want. I, for one, did not need to cook dinner! Ann O’Rorke

After an excellent break in which the only action was the picking up of a complete Triumph Herald motor and gearbox and a small box of Ford Model A parts, we are ready to go. Spares have been quietly working since Anniversary Weekend on getting the remains of a 1971/72 Chrysler Valiant; this is a work in progress, with more details to come next month. As everyone knows scrap metal is just one of the many things Spares deals with. Over the years the scrap metal dealers have got fussier, so I must ask members from now on, please leave your scrap metal on the trailer in Spares for the parts team to work though. Thank you. There is no sign of any rust or metal deterioration anywhere on the vehicle. All the original fittings and handles are in the vehicle. VTNZ Tester, Timaru "This would be the best original car I have ever tested". It has current WoF and is VIN’ed ready for registration, including the original black plates. The museum, multi complex of local, Dutch, Maori and Exhibition Gallery featuring Anne Frank each displayed a meaningful story which I have not previously experienced within a museum setting. This complex display was put together with sensitivity and meaning. In discussion with the Museum complex people we are hopeful of having a guide, also for the windmill and wood carving building.” The diary of Anne Frank captures the real-life story of a young girl in hiding from the Nazis in an attic in Amsterdam, during World War II. The dynamic and interactive exhibition created by the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam has already visited 80 countries, and been seen by over 10 million people globally. It arrived in New Zealand in 2018 and opened at the Auckland War Memorial Museum in January where it engaged over 35,000 visitors in just three short months. Using a combination of excerpts from Anne Frank’s famous diary, historical artefacts, pictures, video and testimony, the exhibition walks you through the life of the Frank family and the history of the era. It also engages visitors in a discussion about how the same themes affect our modern world. Coffee and/or lunch can be taken at your leisure within the complex where Millside Café offers refreshment including light meals. Next door is the Dutch Oven Café for a more substantial meal (cabinet food only after 2.30pm).
