It appears strange to be writing this and realising that it is my last chat for the year. While it has been a very challenging year mainly due to Covid 19 restrictions we have still achieved a lot and to me the year seems to have grown wings and simply flown by. The greatest disappointment for the club was the cancelling of the Easter Rally. There was an enormous amount of preparation and organising which was very professionally executed by the organising committee. Our thanks go to them and we sympathise with them and how disappointed they must feel. However the club has worked well together in all aspects and marched bravely on. This month we welcome 3 new members Stan Garmonsway, who has transferred from Manawatu Branch and Darryl and Sheryl Taylor. Also we had a new visitor this month that has a great interest in old cars and has just shifted to Levin, Brent Smith. Brent went home with a membership pack so hopefully we will see more of him. Our Club Captains did a great job of running the Tararua Trundle and utilised the run that was set up for the cancelled Easter Rally. Although at times the weather wasn’t the kindest a great day was enjoyed and we all experienced amazing hospitality and lunch hosted by the Tokomaru School. We have several upcoming parades and events over the next months and it is great to participate in these events, to show what our club is all about. Our banners on the cars portray us well, so make sure that you have one on your vehicle. They are available from the library at $10 each. If you can’t get to the library, give me a call and I will arrange one for you. The organising committee for the HVCC Heritage Day on 28 February 2021 is well underway and have some great events organised which are live/working demonstrations, Wheelwright, Blacksmith, flour mill, timber mill, campsite, Gipsy Wagon, working kitchen, cars, trucks, motorcycles, Levin Racing Circuit display, heritage display and cemetery tours. This promises to be a great day for the club and hopefully will eventuate into an annual event. So mark this on your calendar, spread the news and help make it a wonderful success. The photo displays in the club rooms have a lot of spare spaces on the wall. So if your car is not there or you have changed it bring a 6”x 4” photo of it into the Library and have the photo framed and displayed. Monthly working bee or should I call it monthly social morning, this was a very social occasion with about 30 people present. A great deal was achieved with getting the club rooms ready for the Christmas Dinner and generally cleaning up. Thank you very much to all the helpers, especially Bob and Linda Barton and Jackie Job. Don’t forget Manawatu Branch have invited us to join them for a New Years day picnic, meeting in

General: HVCC Heritage Day, Sunday 28 March: Tom Hayes and Peter Nightingale provided an update on proceedings. A special display of cars and motorbikes showing vehicle evolution (horse-drawn to present day) is required and asked members to complete a form with make and model to enable selection. Members’ vehicles will also be required for general display on the field. An advertising budget approved by HVCC committee of $1500 to promote the event. Requires help from members on the day. Gold coin entry at gate will be returned to HVCC funds. HVCC kitchen will not be open. Café-style food will be supplied via a coal range by privately-owned Local Rural Women’s Group with all proceeds going to them. Cemetery tours are also being introduced. Recently, these tours have proved to be successful. Peter stated exhibitor enthusiasm is amazing. HVCC was thanked for its support and this event is to be considered as an annual event, namely Horowhenua Vintage Car Club Heritage Day. January Working Bee: Jackie planning a Clubrooms Spring Clean. Need volunteers. Details in Spark. Trophies: A book with a list of trophies (including photographs) is to be provided to enable identification and future tracing of recipients. Two trophies without inscription are as replacements should any “go astray”. Shannon and Dannevirke Car Shows: Warwick Doreen asked if details of these shows are known. Not at present, but details will be in Spark. Swap Meet: 20 March 2021 (Rex Williams) Members were reminded of the help required for this event as it was very close to Heritage weekend. Rex explained assistance required - Gatekeepers and BBQ, It was suggested a committee be formed to help run this event with Rex. As time was an issue, members volunteered from the floor to be part of this committee, with first meeting suggested mid-January. 1500 flyers to be printed for distribution at other events being attended by members. Rex to arrange a notice to be placed in Spark requesting volunteers for the day. National Motor Cycle Rally, Masterton - March. Graeme McKenzie mentioned if anyone is interested to join him and others, please let him know.
Monte Carlo and Burma Rally events: Don McLaren detailed the weekend of activities. From Dannevirke to Whanganui, a great weekend to be had. Raffle drawn – 4 winners. Meeting ended 8.35pm with supper served. Next meeting, Wednesday 3 February 2021.
Brucie’s Burblings For starters I would like to wish every member of the branch a “Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year” and on a personal note a huge thank you to everyone for the support you have shown me during the last challenging 6 months. The Tararua Trundle was a resounding success, thanks to the work put in by the Easter Rally team and the added work by Verdon and team to add a small competitive section for those who wanted it. This formula may be a good blueprint for the future, for those who want a quiet no stress drive to somewhere special and others like myself, who enjoy a bit of mental challenge thrown in as well. The Christmas dinner was well attended and some seldom seen machines were also on display notably John and Hillary Orr's Russian motorcycle and sidecar which drew a lot of attention and kept John talking for over ¾ hour. The best restoration was won by Jan and Don Macdonald with their immaculately restored Morris Minor soft top. Thanks to those who entered. I must also thank the cleanup team who went in on Monday to restore the rooms to their normal configuration. We also had a good turnout for the Levin Christmas Parade on Saturday 28 November.

Sunday 22 November dawned overcast after overnight rain, as we assembled at the clubrooms for our briefing and the opportunity for those wishing to join the competitive section, to do so. Colin Brooks ably spelt out the do’s and don’ts of the rally, including those of the off road section. We left the clubrooms for a Levin street tour before heading in a northerly direction encompassing farmlands before we encountered the “off road” section, better known now as “Mike Khull’s farm track extravaganza”! Mike was marshalling his troops with little information on the state of the track other than to follow the arrows. We should have known by the look of his MGA what to expect, the top half of his vehicle was still red, but the bottom section indiscernible!!
However after safely negotiating this obstacle we continued in a northerly direction again through picturesque rural country, eventually arriving at Tokomaru School for our lunch-stop at 11.30pm. We found the school gates still locked but witnessed a super-fit female Principal scorching up the school grounds to rectify our problem. She also directed parking, offered the welcoming speech including instructions for collection and dining of the prepared lunches. These lunches were supplied by staff, great soup, bread rolls - ham or chicken and cakes. Plenty thereof, followed by tea and coffee. Following lunch those interested were shown around the classrooms by some delightful senior pupils. Of particular interest were the exhibits of Wearable Art fashioned by the children.
Around 1.10pm rain and hail began to fall, and within minutes the heavens opened up - this sent members scurrying to secure hoods etc., with the exception of Mark Gibson, who for some unknown reason, was noticed cavorting around singing “Raindrops keep falling on my head”, while all the time his car was turning into a miniature swimming pool despite being parked under the trees. Upon leaving the school we headed in a westerly direction to Opiki School across SH 57 following the flood spillway stop banks, then in a southerly direction, through Shannon and via Roslyn Road and back to the clubrooms, now bathed in sunshine. A great run was had by 38 participating vehicles. On behalf of all participants, thanks to those who organised a great day out and special thanks to the kitchen staff for the “cuppa” and cakes afterwards.

When Mark and I planned the routes for the Easter Rally we included an off road section through the farm to make the run more interesting, however Covid 19 got in the way! It was decided to use the long route for this year’s Tararua Trundle as all the art work had been done and the farm manager was still happy for us to go through his property. The forecast was for overnight rain but clearing in the morning so we would only have to cancel if it was too wet and muddy. Wayne, the Manager had agreed to open all gates through the farm before 9.30am and I was to drive through and put up arrows to mark the route as it is a large farm. Sunday was sunny at the beach, there was a bit of cloud on the hills so I set off for Levin. As I got closer I could see it was raining on the farm and looking very dark. I was greeted with water flowing down the drive, but Wayne had opened the gates so he was okay with us going ahead! I started setting up the arrows in light rain. The tracks had water running off them but were solid and as I drove through it started to clear and by the time I arrived back at the start gate it was sunny again! Wayne arrived and was impressed with the MG as it was covered in mud all over but said you will be okay as the wind will dry the tracks by the time the cars arrive. The farm owners, workers plus children set themselves up to view the cars and were rapt to see and hear 38 cars go past their doors. After the last car went through I started to collect the arrows but was soon surrounded by farm quads, bikes and all the workers families and owners! They were all ‘over the moon’ saying we had made their day! All thanked us for making the effort as some of them remembered the first time we went through the old track about 30 years ago. I collected the arrows and Bob was waiting to take the last pictures as I came through. He had been there for over an hour but has some amazing photographs. We shut the gate at the end of the track and carried on with the rally. The quote of the day has to be from the workers young daughter who thought the cars were “COOL AS”. I thought they made our day! Mud and all! I haven’t had that much fun in ages. I am sure we would be welcomed back in the future as we made a great impression with our cars and smiles.

With the involvement of Tokomaru School this year, the Tararua Trundle ran a People’s Choice to include members of the local community and their children. The kids became very excited and spent much time considering their votes. Kids being kids, attempted to corrupt the voting process by obtaining additional voting slips to secure their favourite! Was this influenced by American elections? Votes were democratically counted by Principal Sonia Mudgway’s teaching staff. There was a developing trend from the huge pile of damp pieces of paper. Numbers fluctuated between the beautiful pink and grey ’59 Vauxhall of Merv Edwards and the only rarely seen ’36 Ford V8 Coupe of Derek Ransom. There were a clear two votes in it, with Sharon and Richard Meredith’s US imported 1938 Chevrolet Coupe Deluxe with all its accessories taking the People’s Choice prize. Fittingly, this is the first appearance of the Chev on a club run since Sharon and Richard joined the club and its purchase in June.

Dear Spark Readers I came across this photo in my December 2020 issue of “The Antique Motorcycle”, the magazine of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America, and thought it might be of interest to readers of “Spark”. It shows a group of Harley Davidson dealers being introduced to the new 1919 Harley Davidson Sport Twin at a meeting in late 1918. At the time the world was dealing with the pandemic known as Spanish Flu and so the dealers were posed around the bike in an outdoor setting and all are wearing masks. Perhaps the current U.S. administration could have learnt a lesson from the pandemic precautions taken over a hundred years ago, though social distancing doesn’t seem to have been a priority back then. I’ve no idea of copyright but, if the source of the photo is acknowledged, there is hardly likely to be an international court case over its inclusion in the VCC Horowhenua Branch newsletter!! While on a recent holiday to the South Island, my wife Margaret and I were on the lookout for a vintage car event. The Otago Branch was advertising a Sunday run so we decided to check it out. We arrived early at their Forbury Road address and there wasn’t much sign of life. The evening before had been very stormy with plenty of rain and high winds. The winds had died down but it was still very wet. The event had been advertised as for veterans and commercials and we couldn’t see veteran owners being keen to take their vehicles out in such weather. However, in due course the vehicles started to arrive so we went into the clubrooms and introduced ourselves. We were made very welcome, given route instructions and invited to join them on the run. By this stage it had almost stopped raining. We made our way through South Dunedin, along the front at St Clair and up onto the peninsula. The road wound out along the tops past the road to Larnach Castle. We had great views out over the harbour. The drive then took us down a steep road ending up at Portobello. We weren’t organised for a picnic but managed to find ourselves a coffee and muffin. However, we needn’t have worried. The final destination was the domain at Portobello and we all crowded into the small venue there. We were offered sandwiches, scones with jam and cream and other delicacies more than we could eat. Everyone made us feel very much at home. We were overwhelmed with their generosity. I made a short speech thanking them. The conversation then morphed into a discussion about a number of things motoring. The rain had now stopped and although there was still a stiff cool breeze we were able to have a look at the vehicles. There were two very well preserved veterans, a couple of commercials, two motorbikes, and a variety of vintage and classic vehicles. The run finished with a leisurely drive round the coast road back to the city.

Kapiti Coast Mid Week Run November's outing was to experience a 180 degrees view of Kapiti while sitting at morning tea. For 33 of us who participated, the view was everything but. The grey and miserable outlook gave way instead to lively discussion amongst all participants and the rain outside was soon forgotten. When we all got up to go to Alan Mayo’s home much to our surprise the cloud had lifted and there before us there was indeed a 180 degree vista of Kapiti Island in all its splendour. The rain had stopped, the sun had come out as we made our way to Te Horo and by the time we left Alan’s, the heat of the sun was evident with raincoats vanished out of sight. All within a day’s happening; it could not have turned out better. Those of you who have experienced a day at Alan Mayo’s home will tell you, Alan is a most talented story teller. His stories and love of life don’t always include “wheels.” His imagination and the way he expresses his approach to life knows no boundaries, as to what he can envision when exploring the many possibilities of any given project. Alan’s right hand man of 30 years, Brian Ward, gave yet another duo-act of the day. The two of them bouncing off one another of claim and counter claim as to what each one remembered and the other not so, completed the day. Over the years, it has been a joy to watch the Manawatu Motorcycle Swap Meet increase in size. This year’s event was no different having 30 to 35 stall holders. As always there were some rare items among the stalls, with one complete 1940 BSA C12 350cc side valve motor (WC12 187) along with some 1920’s Indian Prince parts. The November Working Bee saw some members of Spares and volunteers head off to a local carnation grower to pick up three 1939 Chevrolet engines. One was a short block and the other two, long blocks. In addition there are two diff’s with torque tubes and other Chevrolet parts from that year. Merry Christmas and safe travelling over the holiday period.
