The weather has warmed up and the sun is shining so we are into summer and also into the last stages of our year. Building up to Christmas is a busy time; we have the opening of the Whirokino Bridge next Saturday morning and in the afternoon the Horowhenua Christmas Parade. On Sunday we have our very own Christmas Dinner. The past month has also been quite busy. The Tararua Trundle was a great success thanks to Verdon and his helpers for providing such a well planned and executed route with plenty of challenges along the way. Thanks also to our Club Captain Bruce for his part in organising the event which was very well attended. The team in my car did far better than I could have imagined and that is because we handled it with enthusiasm and team spirit. I was the driver, Bruce Jameson the navigator while in the back seat Pauline doing all the talking, what a great team. It was great to have the Manawatu Branch Club Captain and her husband join us on the rally. Many thanks to the Manawatu Branch for opening their clubrooms for us to have lunch in and supplying us with hot tea and coffee. The National North Island Easter Rally Committee is still working hard organising this event, so get in now and book your entry don't leave it till the last minute. Another point to remember is that if you want to enter into the rally in the competitive section your vehicle must have a VIC number. This is a fairly simple procedure which normally only takes a couple of weeks and if you are a financial club member it costs you nothing. The club meeting went well this month with nearly 70 people in attendance and ended in a chat amongst ourselves with a ‘bring a plate’ supper. Then the Saturday morning working bee followed with well over 30 people present! The Christmas tree was erected and the hall made presentable for Father Christmas’ inspection on Sunday 15 December. I have been told that Merv Edwards is coming out of hospital today after a back operation, so we wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him back with us shortly. The club will not be having a meeting in January and also Spares will not be open unless it is an emergency or special request. Our next club meeting will be on Wednesday 5 February 2020. We will not be having a speaker but instead will have a barbeque supper. The club will supply Bangers, Onions and bread etc. So until then Pauline and I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a very Happy and Prosperous New Year. Best Regards,

The Horowhenua Historical Society Inc, are holding an annual heritage week on 22-28 Feb, with a plaque unveiling the honouring of local people, the first to be Sir Bernard Freyberg. The week is to kick off with a grand parade and they would like our club cars to participate. The first club night in 2020 (Feb) is to be a BBQ. Colin Brooks reminded us that the last day for registration for the upcoming Easter Rally is Feb 10th. He needs firm numbers ASAP. Also, the Horowhenua Council have granted us $2000 towards the event. Bill Laney spoke re: a 1929 Graham Paige with only 40,000 miles on the clock, a deceased estate sale in Timaru. SPEAKER: None.
Brucie’s Burblings Firstly I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year. This is the time of year when many families meet up for their annual get together. Of course there are quite a few folk who are not in a position to do this so maybe it is the ideal time to make contact with friends who you haven’t seen for a while. The Tararua Trundle was a very well run event with 19 cars entering and 16 across the finishing line. Well done to Verdon and his team for the great effort plotting and manning this event. Won by Bruce and Raewynn in the Triumph 2500 S. Coming events December 14th Saturday Opening of New Bridge at Foxton Meet at clubrooms at 8.30am. Proceed to south end of bridge by 9.15am to form up for Opening Parade, oldest vehicles first. Return to club rooms for lunch. Levin Christmas Parade Meet at club rooms at 1.00pm to decorate cars, proceed in convoy to marshaling area for parade start. Dress up to match the vehicle. December 15th Sunday Christmas Dinner Meet at mid-day for a natter. Sit down for a meal at 1.00pm. Competition for Best Restoration, cars on display. Shannon Parade and Carnival For members not partaking in the dinner, you may like to represent the club at the parade starting at 9.30am opposite the Shannon Railway Hotel. Remember mid January, Wanganui Branch are hosting the Burma Rally and Wellington are running their Club Captain’s run in conjunction with the Wanganui Vintage Weekend 17th – 20th January. During the running of the Tararua Trundle, a number of passage/silent checks were used. There have been several enquiries about the meanings of the names of the passage checks, so this is a short description of the not so common names. HANSA ITALA JAWA OSSA PANHARD SIMCA SCOTT TATRA KONIG

We wish to thank all of the helpers/marshals for their support and sterling effort to set up and run of this event. Thanks to Bev and Peter Kelly, Jackie Job, Robert Heath, Viv Spiers, Esther and Dave Williams. As an observation, the entrants’ timing to the manned checks was very good. The locations and recordings of the passage checks let a lot of the entrants down. It appears concentration levels dropped off markedly after lunch for some, and improved for others. A number of entrants changed vehicles at the start, or withdrew, or took rides in enclosed cars due to the weather being rather unpleasant. All passage checks were collected on Sunday night, with not one missing and all visible even in the rain and dark.
I spotted an advert in Beaded Wheels advertising this rally. It was being run over 28 days by Paul Collins. We decided to enter, so we had to be in Kaitaia on 24 September. There were 10 cars that started and were meant to end up at Bluff. Eight arrived there! The others dropped out due to weather as it was very wet and other personal reasons. The rally was divided into four sections and cars from other branches came and went. At one stage we had about 25 cars! We visited 22 branches sometimes for lunch, afternoon tea or dinner at night. Four cars began giving trouble almost from the start. The first sounded like a flat battery and yes the battery was on its last legs, after push-starting the car every time they stopped from Dargaville onwards, the bought a new battery in Hamilton. It still did not resolve the problem, so off to the Waikato VCC spares and for $40 another starter motor was put on. It worked for two days and then it died. So we push-started this car down the rest of the North Island including onto the ferry! They took the car to an auto electrician in Ashburton. It was finally fixed and there was no more trouble. The other cars just had minor things go wrong. One was a leaking exhaust pipe. One car was a 1967 Chevrolet and had air shocks in the rear. We suggested he get them checked as the car was dragging its self along. He came back and said there was no air in them and that he didn’t know he even had air shocks! I was amazed. The final car to have trouble got as far as Wanganui. Here its head was removed. A segment of a ring had come up through the piston and the valve was burnt. This car was left in Wanganui. Neil Farrier generously lent them his Humber Hawk to carry on the rally. It was here as the group taking the head off the Chev witnessed an assault by a member of the public on another. There were three children involved, one being a baby! It was the two older children who came and asked for them to call the police. After the police finished taking statements the Sergeant said “is that a 1939 Chev?�, and when told it was he said he had one and also offered his spare head if it was required.
There was another incident involving the law. This was when Ruth and I were checking into a motel in Nelson. There was a chap about 28 years of age wanting to check in, however he had only $100 and the unit cost was $150. He offered the $100 and said would put their bags into the unit and then go into town and get another $50 from his sister. The young women behind the counter said no, he had to pay $150 now. He kept arguing and eventually he went out to his car to talk to his partner. In the mean time the phone rang and it was another Motelier warning this Motelier that they had done a number plate check on a car and it was stolen! Well it turned out to be the same car this person was sitting in. When he saw us all looking at him he took off. The police were called. We visited many museums and tractor collections so much so the women decided one day they weren’t going into another one and went off to look at stuff that they were interested in! The weather overall was very bad, we had snow on the hill tops, hail, horizontal rain - we got the lot. It was very cold. As we went further south the weather improved, as did the price of petrol - $2.06 in Dunedin for 91. I was paying less for 95 down south than what I pay for 91 here in Waikanae or Paraparaumu. Our last dinner was held at the Southland VCC club rooms. What amazing rooms. They have a full size billiard table plus about 20 small easy chairs and a fireplace that they built themselves. This fireplace is made out of steel and is like a tube, it is two meters long so they just put long logs in it. The other interesting thing with a few branches is that they have full bars. You can buy whisky, wine, beer, etc. Just to finish, a few facts.
We travelled 3,822 miles. Winton We got two punctures. This was the first time the VCC had undertaken this rally in 33 years. The last one was from south to north. For some of you, if you’re wondering if it was a sanctioned event from National Office. If it had been every car would have had to have a VIC. So it was just a normal club run organised by the North Shore Branch.
Kapiti Coast Mid Week Run It was a small but enthusiastic group that met to tour the NZ Rugby Museum in Palmerston North. The tour took us through the exhibits from the 1870s to the present day. Many of the various displays are above drawers which open to reveal further presentations of memorabilia; embroidered caps from way back, boots, balls made of materials such as flax, picture cards, and many other small items. A couple of drawers are devoted to ‘pink’: women’s jerseys, boots and even a photo of Ritchie McCaw and his team in pink. Speaking of Ritchie McCaw, his portrait looks over the museum and, as you draw closer, you realise it’s comprised of small cubes of bread toasted to varying shades of brown to burnt! It is polyurethaned to prevent the occasional visiting sparrow viewing it as dinner. The host of the tour (the museum curator) was excellent having a huge knowledge of the early days of rugby from its inception in England through New Zealand to the present day with many interesting and humorous anecdotes in each era such as: during the campaign in the African desert, the commander of the NZ contingent, General Freyberg, realised that the opportunity for the troops to play rugby would give them a small respite from the harshness of continuous warfare. Games were arranged between various units playing for a large cup (the Freyberg cup which still exists). In 1937 South Africa had given the ABs quite a thrashing so that when a “test” match was arranged between NZ and SA troops in 1940 it was keenly contested. NZ won the match and accordingly produced a publication called “This is the Book” which depicted a Kiwi teaching a Springbok how to play rugby. Copies were issued to SA which were well received – “NOT”! A rematch was organised which SA won after which they presented a book to NZ showing a Springbok teaching the “rules of rugby” to a Kiwi and named - ”De Book” – touché! In the centre of the museum is a netted ‘have a go’ space where one can kick a rugby ball or attack the large tackle bags which are fixed to the floor. We were able to watch another visitor (in the same age group as many of us) hurling himself at each tackle bag with great energy. He might be a bit achy tonight! The progression of rugby through the ages parallels major events in NZ history; Māori in rugby, the world wars, changing fashion and materials, anti-apartheid. Every NZ Army unit serving overseas travels with rugby equipment and goal posts so that a field can be set up e.g. in Afghanistan. Who knew? Lunch was taken a little way away at The Verdict where the group chatted vigorously over a yummy meal. A lovely day out!

Targa 2019 VCC Time Trial Results – VCC Branches Thanks to very enthusiastic support from central North Island VCC branches, especially Taupo and Manawatu, the Targa 2019 VCC Time Trial was a great success. Over 5 days we drove almost 2,000km through stunning central North Island countryside, comprising over 760km timed special stages and almost 1,200km of touring stages. With Christmas and New Year just around the corner, Spares has had what can only be described as its most busy year so far. With this Spares will be putting their feet up in January and relaxing (we will be closed) ahead of a very busy 2020. The Swap Meet and National North Island Easter Rally, along with a series of interesting auctions for parts, cars and motorcycles are on the agenda to look forward to. We kick off the auctions on 1 February 2020 with the Ferguson Tractor Collection which is being auctioned by Wakefield Auctions of Greytown. Horowhenua members will receive an e-mail with more detail from the Secretary in the New Year. This will be via me when I’ve obtained further information. However before all this, we have had November’s working bee, which was back to normal, after being closed in October for the Manawatu Swap Meet. We had Morris 8 parts from Bill Isles finding a new home in Martinborough, along with many more items also. Its Christmas, let’s all have a Merry one, along with a Happy New Year. Deceased estate. 3128cc side valve six cylinder engine. Original mileage is 40,690. The vehicle was manufactured with four wheel hydraulic drum brakes. There is no sign of any rust or metal deterioration anywhere on the vehicle. All the original fittings and handles are in the vehicle. VTNZ Tester, Timaru "This would be the best original car I have ever tested". It has current WoF and is VIN’ed ready for registration, including the original black plates. Many more photos and video available on request. The vehicle is in its original condition, 90 years old, and has worn very well, having been in the one family from new to 1983 in South Canterbury. Kapiti Coast Mid Week Run (last Wednesday of the month)
Wednesday 11 December 2019 Christmas Lunch at the Winemaker’s Daughter, 1081 SH1, Te Horo Cost $30 per head, payable individually on arrival. Arrive at 11.30am when a variety of nibbles will be served. A buffet lunch will be served at 12 midday. It includes: Roast Pork with stuffing, apple sauce and gravy Chicken Curry with green beans Fish and Spinach Pie Beef in red wine sauce Penne Pasta with tomato and fresh herbs Potatoes, rice, vegetables, cold meats, salad, bread. Followed by a range of yummy desserts and tea or coffee. Drinks are extra; the Winemaker’s Daughter is licensed. There will be a reserved seating area for us. Directions: The restaurant is on SH1 1.4km north of Café Te Horo, Te Horo Beach Road or, coming from the north, 2.6km from the Otaki River bridge. If turning right from the north cross into the restaurant with great care. The same applies when leaving to travel south.
