OK, so it’s a rainy Sunday afternoon, my beloved wife seems to have temporarily run out of jobs for me to do, (YAY!),so I have time to write this lot!
Now what’s happening with our club currently? We had a great speaker last club night, Mark Cookson, who told us about Linton Prison, which he runs. Not a job that I could do! A great talk, which can be gauged by all the questions afterwards! Our next speaker for the May club night is Chris Clarke from my area, Tararua Road. He will tell us all about his business, which is crane operations. Chris is actually a club member. Should be an interesting talk. On the subject of speakers, they are a rare and incredibly shy species. I am thinking, gazing at you lot from the top table, that there must be a heap of stories and life experiences in our own membership. Now don’t go all shy on me, I’m sure you all have a good yarn to tell, or know of a possible speaker for us? Come and see me please. Things have quietened down somewhat on the outings / run front since busy February. We have a short lunch run to Murrayfields cafe on the Sunday following Mother’s day. See Bruce’s report, and bring your car! For runs generally, we need input, so if you have a great destination or an idea, come see Bruce, Verdon, or any of us, so we can put something together! Regarding building maintenance, the lights are all now good in the main room. Interesting that tube fittings are now history and LED is the way to go. Our defibrillator is away getting a new heartbeat or something, so no emergencies please! Book them in for when it returns, all fixed! ( I found out it has a 10 year warranty - amazing!).
Mike Khull, Jeff Fox and I are going to install a large roof cowl vent above the Club Captain’s / library area. This is to help ventilate the high roof area, because it gets incredibly hot up there. Mike actually burnt himself on the metal roof truss framing recently. This will also help with general ventilation for the whole building, even when we are not there. It is a static vent, requiring no power and will run itself continuously. Mike managed to snag it on the cheap, and I love cheap! On building maintenance, if you spot something that needs fixing, let us know! We aim to keep our ‘home’ up and running.
Our club delegate, Winton recently attended the big conference in Wellington, and we apparently are going to be re-branded, new logo and all, so tune in next club night to hear Winton tell all! Situations vacant Pauline St Clare is resigning from the library / archives position, so Librarian Don McLaren is looking for a librarian / helper. Pays well, interesting job, apply to Don. We also will be needing a team leader for the Daffodil Day job in August. As your chairman I just cannot do both jobs, so after 5 years it is time out. Now this is an easy job, real cruisy. The supermarket where we park up is very welcoming, a very sociable day, I will help on this one for your first time out - no experience necessary, all on the job training!
Now, in this and the next Spark issues, you will find a nomination form for the upcoming elections of your club officers / committee at the June AGM. Give this some thought, I really want people coming forward. This is your club, and like all things in life one gets out of it largely what one puts into it. Think on it. I decided that it might be nice for me to write a small item for this months Spark giving my thoughts of how the club is progressing. So firstly my thanks to John White for being available and able to take over the Chairman’s position from me at very short notice, in fact 30 seconds. John is doing well and very capable in upholding the position of Chairman. I feel that the club is in good hands and has an excellent committee. The secretaries Bill and Denise have certainly stepped into the breach and leave no stone unturned. Our treasurer Jackie is a real treasure and always has the accounts and finances well up to date. Jackie also takes on many other duties without flinching an eyebrow. Cleaning, helping with events, even stepping in as secretary when needed. Our club Captains Bruce and Verdon are also very capable and hard working always on the ball arranging rallies etc. Not forgetting the rest of the committee who put so much time and effort into the running of the club. Bruce Jamieson has taken on the position of the Spark Editor, which is a very demanding role and I am confident in knowing a little bit of Bruce’s background and expertise that he will do the club proud. Please help him and give him any information, tit bits, or stories that may be of interest to our readers. At this stage I would like to give a very special thanks to our previous Editor, Mark Gibson. Mark held this position for just on 8 years and when he decided to retire from it he agreed to keep the magazine operating until the club found some one else to fulfil the position. This was a very generous gesture and Mark held the title for a further 8 months until Bruce stepped in. So many thanks to Mark for the splendid job he did and for holding the position for so long after making his decision to retire. Covid 19 presented many challenges over the past year and because of it, the cancellation of the Heritage Day event. This was a big disappointment and a financial loss to the club. Mainly Peter Nightingale and Tom Hayes, they had put uncountable hours of preparation into this event to guarantee its success. Hopefully the club will carry on with it in the coming year. Next the Swap Meet. Well what a day! It started out with “What do we do, how do we do it without Pete Collins? “Rex Williams and Derek Ransom stepped forward and didn’t they do well ! What a successful day, The weather was fantastic, the gates and incoming traffic flowed superbly. Linda Barton and her kitchen staff , the hot dog stand, Spares department, Jackie and Don counting the money. I could ramble on forever. The whole day was just one huge success. Requires cars preferably of 100-year vintage to take part in a street parade. Please advise Secretary. Treasurer’s Report: (Jackie Job) Club’s Main Account for March, details were read and tabled. Still have a small balance in an account set aside for Heritage Day – a Covid-19 cancelled event. Moved as correct by Andrew Judd, seconded Des StClare. Club Captain’s Report: (Bruce Lawrie) March was a challenging month, but a successful one. Some members attended other branch and fund-raising events, where a fun time was had. As HVCC does not have any runs organised for April, it was suggested more members looked at attending other branch events. These are great opportunities to get to know and mix with other enthusiasts. Upcoming HVCC events, details in Club Captain’s report in this issue of Spark And who still wants the jokes? Me for one, Bruce. Missed them this month!! Rex Williams (Swap Meet Organisor): To members who helped on the Friday to mark out the area for sellers and car parking and, with the event starting at 7am Saturday, to all Gatekeepers, BBQ, Cafeteria, and everyone who helped to make this event such a huge success, a big “Thank you”! As Rex is resigning as Organisor of Swap Meet, the Club now requires someone to volunteer for the role. Rex will still help in another capacity. Please give this some
thought as this event is our main fund-raiser for the year and needs someone at the helm. An event committee is also formed to assist, so you are not on your own. The Showgrounds have already been booked for 2022. Linda Barton thanked all Club members for the constant supply of home baking which kept arriving at the kitchen throughout the day, also to the team of ladies who served the customers and those who helped in the kitchen from 5am preparing sandwiches. Spares: (Callum Farmer) Since Swap Meet, Spares has been reasonably busy with orders for parts, etc. Parts continue to be offered for collection. Planning a visit to Wairarapa some time over winter and John White suggested it could be a good club outing. Further details provided in a Spark issue, possibly May. (Modern cars can be used for this run.) Library: (Don McLaren) Library both busy and quiet over the month. Low sales at Swap Meet could have been as a result of books being sold by sellers at the event. Don invited members to visit the Library and browse what is on offer on the For Sale shelf. Sadly, Don is losing his Assistant and Archivist, Pauline StClare. He thanked Pauline for her help and her dedication to recording HVCC Branch history over the years and will be greatly missed. The Club is now seeking a replacement for Pauline’s position. General Business: A member viewed an interesting video on U-Tube regarding a 1918 hybrid, Owen Magnetic, where the internal combustion engine powered the electrical system. It was suggested a link to the U-Tube article be sent to the Editor of Spark for all to access. New members: Chairman has asked that club members make new members feel they are welcome. It is important there is more mingling on Club night, so please take this opportunity to introduce yourself to others. A suggestion to new members – come join us at our monthly Working Bee. A great “social” time. Defibrillator: The Clubrooms are without the unit for an unknown time. Under its 10-year warranty, the unit is being repaired or replaced. Cause for need of repair, someone had misused the unit, battery had worn down and now does not function. Guest Speaker: Mark Cookson, Linton Prison Director Mark spoke of his 14 years of war-time experiences in the British Army, mainly retraining police, prior to coming to New Zealand and his employment at Linton Prison. Via a slide-show presentation, he provided an insight into the layout of the prison, personnel and prisoner statistics, and what life is like behind the walls for a Prison Director. Q & A followed with some interesting answers. Thank you, Mark, for providing our members with an insight into your life and achievement. We wish you every success in your attempt, and those of Corrections, to turn around the statistics. Raffles drawn. Meeting concluded 9.20pm with refreshments.

The weather turned out grand, all our helpers turned out again, and the gates opened for our Annual Swap Meet. By all accounts it was the biggest ever, with I am told 150 plus stall holders and the largest turnout of buyers and browsers that we have seen in ages. The sausage sizzle was a huge success and the kitchen broke all records for sales, well done the ladies!!! Callum and the gang worked wonders in the spares department selling lots of spare parts. A good day out for the public, but a great day out for our club members, who got up early, got involved, and really enjoyed themselves, which is what the Car Club is all about, a great bunch of people and well done to you all. Library Report: The library has been both busy and quiet during the last month. The Swap Meet meant that books which hadn’t see the light of day for twelve months got their annual exercise. Some left for adventures in others’ homes but the majority returned to that dark corner, the dreaded “For Sale” shelves. The Swap Meet exercise earned over $100 which was recorded in the days returns. It has been noted that there was a large number of books for sale out in the field, but whether that caused the low return I can not comment. I have bad news and good news to share with all our members. Firstly, our loyal archivist Pauline St Clare is retiring from her position in the library team at the AGM. Thanks Pauline for your dedication to the important job of recording the branch history. The good news is that all of you members who have been waiting in the wings for a position to become open now have a chance to gain your place serving the masses. Nomination forms will soon be available.

KAPITI COAST MIDWEEK RUN - MARCH On an overcast (and threatening to rain) day, thirty-nine Wellington and Horowhenua members met at Greg and May Haines’ car collection. Prior to lunch we went to the Haines’ beautiful home in Days Bay to view two classic vehicles in their collection: first, a 1928 Ford Model A pickup that Greg has been restoring (on and off) for 33 years, and second, a magnificent red and white 1961 Chevrolet Corvette. Greg firstly talked about their house. It’s a very handsome 1910-14 home that Greg had shifted 90 degrees on the section. This was so that he could build a 6-car garage under the house. The Model A was purchased in Paraparaumu in the late 1980s, largely in bits. He then told us how he purchased the stunning Corvette at the Hershey Swap Meet several years ago. It was so stunning it was nearly enough to convert this old Fordphile to the General’s bowtie!! Greg hasn’t driven the Corvette a lot since he imported it but he did admit that “it goes real good down Port Road in Seaview”! After an excellent lunch at The Pavillion at Days Bay we were off to Greg and May’s warehouse in Naenae where the bulk of their cars are stored. Here we feasted on a wonderfully original Ford Jailbar pickup (sporting its original throaty 6 cylinder engine, making it pretty rare as most were V8s). We also saw several original and restored Ford Model As (1930 roadster and cabriolet, lovely Ma and Pa Kettle original 1930 phaeton, and a two door sedan yet to be restored). Also in the collection was a superb 1935 left hand drive three window Ford V8 coupe (with a modern Chevy engine) and a nice green 1952 MG TD sports car. Many thanks Greg and May for hosting this large group of members who really enjoyed seeing your fabulous cars – and house. You gave us a marvellous day. And amazing for me organising a VCC event – the threatening rain of the morning didn’t eventuate.

Can I borrow your car please? Cars required for a movie. The movie is set in 1918 Texas, so we are looking for period-correct cars of that era. They can be either left or right hand drive. Hoping to find cars to fill some street scenes, they may be parked in shot and/or may be driving through. Also on the wish-list are a period correct Ambulance and an Army troop carrying Truck. It will be shooting in the Whanganui area from late April. We are happy to pay a fair price for people to bring along cars for a day here and there, or if you have a few club members together we could make a donation to the VCC, just whatever works best for everyone. A big ‘thank you’ to everyone who has helped me throughout the role as Editor of Spark. Everyone has been brilliant and made the job so much easier than it could’ve been. Whenever I requested assistance for an article someone always stumped up and contributed. It made the job so much easier. Thinking about this I did a wee calculation and discovered I’ve been Editor for 6 years 9 months! Longer than I ever expected and produced 74 issues! That’s nuts, however it was good fun and a great means to get to know many members. So many contribute in so many different ways, I thought living in Johnsonville was harder to do my bit, whereas with the convenience of email and technology there was no difference than if I was living in Levin. The club has a good relationship with Denise at the Print Bureau in Levin and we get an exceptional price on printing Spark and many related documents. Her work is exceptional and the product right up there considering we just use plain paper without the fancy stuff. Our 40th Anniversary celebration copy was the first to include coloured pages internally; I was very pleased with this. It should be considered for other significant occasions. On average each copy is just a little less than $2 and is cheap information distribution for the club. As it has been pointed out to me by many long standing members, we needn’t be too concerned about that sort of cost as the club is fortunately financial as a direct result of our Swap Meet. Previously there had been discussion on electronic means of distribution. This was strongly rejected with the principle reason seeming to be a ‘mature generation’ who prefer to read a printed copy and the ease in being able to readily refer to it. This could’ve been some 7 years or more ago now. While the subject reappears in conversation from time to time, I’ve never felt the need to pursue change. It seems unnecessary as the colour version appears online on the VCC website shortly after printing. Anybody wishing to view it there can. In my opinion if members want their Spark electronically, don’t wish a paper copy, they may simply cancel it. Simple solution, simple saving! I have always seen the Editor’s role as one of editing, not producing items for your consumption. It is a club newsletter where members contribute. Our
membership is car enthusiasts, often mechanics and very few academics! The Editor has enough work correcting grammar and spelling rather than being an author. There will never be criticism of that. Please support Bruce, he requires information just as I did and regularly. Nearly everyone has a computer or knows someone with one and can arrange the typing. Please submit items electronically, this makes the work so much easier and the chance of an error reduced dramatically. While I’ve never demanded a deadline, being a considerate contributor makes you a friend of the Editor. Need I say more, other than thank you. Similar to me, Bruce had little experience with Microsoft Word and its many related programmes. He has a better grasp of the tools than I ever did, at the start I relied heavily on Janet and my two girls! Bruce will do well and Spark will continue to look impressive and keep all up to date. Please support Bruce as you have me. There are two special ‘thank you’ recipients who deserve a mention. Cheryl Brooks has proof read Spark prior to printing and has been exceptional. She is familiar with all members and club history so you can bet any errors will not pass her by. They must be correct and rightly so. So thank you Cheryl, your help has been significant in achieving a professional result. While you refer to yourself as the ‘picky old bag’ in our emails, I have never thought of you like that, you undertake an important role and you are good at it. Thank you. A second thank you goes to Gary Siddells, a retired printer who I refer to as our ‘Black and White Man’. No one will know him but he is an avid reader and follows the club from a distance. He converts our colour document into B&W so we don’t incur cost in printing minute fragments of colour and increasing the cost. This involves using a special programme which the club can not afford, yet saves the Editor untold time. He kindly has agreed to continue as I stand down. I have some beers here for you Gary! Anyone who knows of a ’39 Chev Coupe for sale, Gary would appreciate a heads up. He can be contacted through me easily. Thank you Gary you have saved me many long nights trying to remove unwanted colour specs that upset the printer. To all those future organisers of events, please consider the Editor early and ask him to include your advertising. It is essential to your success, however he can’t mind read! He needs you to tell him a couple of months out, so the message is out there. It’s your responsibility. Second Hand Shop in Eketahuna On Easter Monday, Linda and I went for a drive to Eketahuna on SH2 and saw a lovely shop that had just opened over the Easter weekend. It is called Huntaway Traders, the address is 19 Main Street. What caught my eye was an Ariel motor cycle in the shop window. We entered the shop and were pleasantly surprised at the cleanliness, and what was on offer. It is a secondhand shop with clothing, bric-a-brac, etc and it had, in a separate room, a full wall of motor cycle parts from British Bikes; the likes of BSA, Triumph, and Norton, all neatly laid out on display, and all for sale. Parts include wheels, tyres, cylinder heads and barrels,and various other bits and pieces which could be of use to our motor cycle members. The shop owners tell me that more parts are on the way. Also, there were racks of the older types of garments that would suit the ladies and gents who have vehicles from an earlier era. Give them a visit if you are in the area, or call them on 02041569952. You could pick up the item that you have always been looking for.

WHAT'S IN A NAME? There are four sources for the name "Jeep". These are listed below along with their supposed origin for you to judge which one is correct. (1) The U.S. Army official title for the Jeep is: "Quarter Ton 4x4 General Purpose Truck." General Purpose = G.P. = Jeep. (2) The "Jeep" was a small character in the "Popeye" comic book cartoon. This "Jeep" could only perform impossible things like being in two places at the same time, walk through walls, walk on water etc. Since the Jeep vehicle was so versatile it was named after the cartoon character being capable of going in so many places inacessible to normal vehicles. (3) The word "Jeep" was a generic term in use to describe anything new not seen before in the U.S. Military, possibly dating back the WW1? In 1937 Minneapolis Moline, the U.S. tractor manufacturers, made caterpillar type tractors under contract to the U.S. Army to tow 150mm heavy artillery pieces. These were called "Jeeps" Some Ford V8 standard Army trucks were converted over to 4WD by Marmon Harrington in 1937. These too were called "Jeeps". Aircraft carriers were built in WW2 to escort shipping convoys across the Atlantic between the U.S. & U.K. These were made from requisitioned freighters that had their superstructure & masts removed, a flight deck constructed in place, with elevators down into the holds to bring up aircraft to patrol around the convoy. Since these escort aircraft carriers were built cheaply they were called "Woolworths" or "Jeep" carriers. (4) The original prototype Jeep was brought to Washington in 1940 to show Congressmen what it looked like. To demonstrate the vehicle, it was driven up the steps of Congress by the inventor Karl Probst. A reporter asked him what was the vehicle called? Probst replied: "Why, it's a Jeep!"

March 2021 Congratulation’s everyone, that has to be the best Swap Meet ever. Spares, the Kitchen, the BBQ, and the Gates were all up on last year, and in some cases broke old records. Since then Spares has been busy answering e-mails and phone calls from around the country. So far we have sent out or have on hold awaiting pickup: 1 Chevrolet motor to Gisborne. 1 set of Packard Wheels (sold) waiting pickup. 1 Hillman/Humber 10 motor (sold) waiting pickup. And a set of Ford Prefect mudguards currently a work in progress. Also we will be picking up two trailer loads of 1938 Singer Bantam Parts, so things are bumping along nicely, with loads to do at the working bee on the 10th of April. Safe Travelling Everyone

Club Run and Lunch.
I have organized a small club outing on May 16. I thought of billing it as a late Mothers Day lunch to reward all our good ladies for all the work done over swap meet, and for putting up with us blokes tinkering with our cars instead of doing chores. Assemble at clubrooms at 11.30 am, drive in convoy straight to Murrayfields Cafe for a park-up. People from Foxton and other places north can meet at cafe. Sit down at noon, order & pay individually at counter.
